George F. Lawlor
2003-04-10

George Francis Lawlor, 68, of East Boothbay, died April 4 in Boothbay Harbor after a long illness.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in the Navy Hospital Corps as a Hospital Corpsman 3rd class, and then re-enlisted in the reserves as a junior officer.

Mr. Lawlor was born April 4, 1935 in Waltham, Mass., the son of Eugene and Mary Dolan Lawlor, attended St. Agnes Grammar School in Arlington, Mass. and Boston College High School in Dorchester, Mass. He was a graduate of Boston College, receiving a B.S in biology, and studied and practiced nuclear medicine at Augusta General Hospital.

For many years he was in pharmaceutical sales and then worked in the insurance industry as a salesman. He also worked in public insurance underwriting and began his career in disability examination while working for the State of Maine, Department of Disability Determination Services in the early 1970s. In 1976, he joined the Social Security Administration in Boston as a disability examiner and then later as an analyst, retiring in 2001.

Mr. Lawlor enjoyed sailing, and was known to his friends and neighbors as someone who could do anything he attempted.

He was predeceased by his sister Mary Ann Publicover.

Survivors include his wife, Claudia Lawlor of East Boothbay; his four sons, George F. Lawlor, Jr., of Tokyo, Japan, Michael G. Lawlor of Southbury, Conn., Robert C. Lawlor of Bristol, Conn., and James A. Lawlor of Stafford Springs, Conn.; his brother, Eugene F. Lawlor, MD of Burlington, Conn.; his sister, Gertrude Williamson of Ashland, Mass., and four grandchildren, Michael, Erica, Erin and Ethan.

Memorial visiting hours will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 11, at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. A Memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 12 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor.

Should friends desire, donations may be made in Mr. Lawlor's memory to the St. Andrews Hospital Building Fund, P.O. Box 417, Boothbay Harbor, Maine 04538.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Dr. Eugene W. Lawrence Jr.
2003-03-06

Eugene W. Lawrence Jr., DDS, 68, of Franklin, N.C., died Monday, February 24, while vacationing with his wife in the Caribbean.

Born on August 29, 1934 in Chatham County, N.C., he was the first of five children of Eugene W. Lawrence and Mildred Kelly Lawrence (Mildred Kelly Wells).

He grew up in Chatham Co. and graduated from Bells School in 1952. He then graduated from Mars Hill College in 1954 and The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1958 before continuing to the UNC School of Dentistry where he graduated in 1962.

Dr. Lawrence and his wife Liza, (Elizabeth Sample Lawrence), of Boothbay Harbor moved to Franklin in the North Carolina mountains where he established his dental practice and raised his family and lived the remainder of his life.

Until his retirement in 1998, he practiced dentistry for 36 years. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, served on the Board of Directors of First Union Bank, Angel Medical Center and The Macon County Health Department. He was a member of the Franklin Jaycees and Past President of the Rotary Club. He served on the Morehead Scholarship nominating committee and was a member of the North Carolina Dental Society. He was passionate about his family, the Tar Heels, and the Western North Carolina mountains.

Survivors include his wife Elizabeth S. Lawrence of Franklin, N.C.; two sons, Daniel S. Lawrence and wife Cindy with their daughter Kelly of Tampa, Florida and Donald K. Lawrence and wife Kathy with their sons Donny and Sam of Terra Ceia, Florida; one daughter, Holly Elizabeth Lawrence of Franklin, N.C.; his mother Mildred K. Wells of Durham N.C., two sisters, Sarah Lawrence Childers of Roxboro, N.C. and Elizabeth Lawrence Gunselman of Durham, N.C.; two brothers, Andy O. Lawrence of Raleigh, N.C. and Steve C. Lawrence of Fayetteville, N.C.

Funeral arrangemenrts are incomplete at thie time.

Daniel P. Leeman
2003-08-28

Daniel Paul Leeman, 24, of Durham, died Thursday, August 21 as a result of an ATV accident in Harpswell.

Born in Brunswick on January 16, 1979, he was a son of Walter F. Leeman III and Nancy R. Bernier Wyman and Alton Wyman. In 1998, he graduated from Wiscasset High School where he played Lacrosse and was a member of the cross country team.

At the age of 10 he began lobstering and worked with his father on Bailey Island.

He enjoyed people and his dog, Mabel.

Survivors include his parents, Walter F. Leeman III and his wife Kathy Leeman and Nancy R. Bernier Wyman and her husband Alton Wyman of Wiscasset; his wife, Heather Bryant of Durham; a maternal grandmother, Pauline Bernier of Harpswell; paternal grandmother, Jean Leeman of Bailey Island; two brothers, Walter F. Leeman IV of Harpswell and Douglas Wyman of Wiscasset.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, August 31 at the head of Mackerel Cove on Bailey Island, with Cindy Baumgardner officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to a memorial fund to establish a scholarship in Mr. Leeman's name at the Wiscasset High School.

Arrangements are by Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street in Brunswick.

Llewellyn C. Lewis
2003-06-19

Llewellyn C. Lewis, 89, of Wiscasset died Friday, June 13 at the Veterans Medical Center in Augusta.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on November 27, 1913, he was the son of Frank A. and Arletta (Barter) Lewis.

He attended schools in Boothbay Harbor. He was employed at Sample's Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor. During World War II he served in the United States National Guard

On September 5, 1953, he married Helen F. Lewis.

Mr. Lewis was a clam digger and was employed by the Town of Wiscasset as a laborer. He later was employed by Marriners Lumber, retiring in 1960 due to ill health.

He was predeceased by his wife, Helen F. Lewis, on February 12, 1995; two brothers, George Lewis in 2001 and Russell Lewis; and one sister, Gwendolyn Gaudette.

Survivors include one brother, Douglas Lewis of Casco; two sisters, Evelyn Mason of Lewiston and Alice Lewis of Boothbay Harbor; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Monday, July 16 at Mayo and Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset with the Rev. Ann Lovejoy Johnson officiating. Burial, with military honors, followed in Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

Donald E. Lewis
2003-09-18

Donald (Don) Edward Lewis, 63, of Bath, died Saturday, September 13 at the Bodwell House in Brunswick, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Born May 11, 1940 in Boothbay Harbor, he was a son of Norman S. and Mildred E. Lewis of Southport.

In 1958 he graduated from Boothbay Region High School. He attended Bar Managers School in Portland and upon completion, worked in the Portland and Boothbay areas. In 1969 he went to work for J.J. Nissen Bakery in Portland, retiring from there in 1994.

After retiring from the bakery, Mr. Lewis moved to the Wiscasset area and worked for the State of Maine as a bridge tender on the Southport and Barter's Island bridges. This was a position his father held for 44 years. He was in the movie "In The Bedroom" which was filmed on the Barter's Island bridge.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Cyr Lewis of Knowlton, Canada; two sons, Donald R. Lewis, Major, USAF of Nebraska and William (Billy) Lewis of Virginia Beach, Va.; two stepchildren, Jessica Willette and Andrew Willette, both of Knowlton, Canada; two grandchildren of Nebraska; four brothers, Roy A. Lewis and his wife Joanne of Trevett, Norman S. Lewis Jr. and his wife Nancy of Bath, Duane Lewis and his wife Verna of Southport and Dwight Lewis and his wife Debbie of Boothbay; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Lewis was predeceased by his father Norman S. Lewis and his loving sister Ruth Ann Snowman.

At Mr. Lewis's request, there will be no service and a private burial will be in Decker Cemetery, Southport at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Arlene B. Lewis
2003-06-19

Arlene Brewer Lewis, 72, died Tuesday, June 17 at her home in Boothbay.

Born January 25, 1931, she was a daughter of Winston and Ethel Copp Brewer. She was raised in Cozy Harbor, Southport and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School.

On her high school graduation night she married her husband of 55 years, Edgar W. Lewis.

Mrs. Lewis worked as a bookkeeper and delivery person for Mill Cove Lobster for many years and was a waitress for various restaurants in the region.

She enjoyed traveling, visiting California and making yearly trips to Florida. She had a green thumb and enjoyed spending time in her flower garden. She also loved animals, especially her poodles and birds.

She was predeceased by a son, Kenny Lewis.

Survivors include her husband, Edgar W. Lewis of Boothbay; three sons, Larry Lewis and his wife Janet of Largo, Fla., Peter Lewis and his wife Linda of Boothbay and Jeff Lewis and his fiancée Kim McLain of Trevett; one sister, Sharon Burke of Bath; five grandchildren, Melissa B. Whiteley of Foster, R.I., Courtney Lewis of Providence, R.I. Todd Lewis of St. Paul, Minn., Matt Lewis of Largo, Fla. And Amanda Lewis of Buena Park, Calif.; one great-granddaughter, Amber Lewis of Largo, Fla.; and one great-grandson, Nathan Kenneth Lewis of Buena Park, Calif.

Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 19 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 20 at Union cemetery in Southport.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Miles Home Health and Hospice, 40 Belvedere Rd., Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Serophino Lewis
2003-01-16

Serophino "John" Lewis, 84, of Boothbay Harbor died Saturday, January 11 at the Veteran Medical Center in Manchester, N.H.

He was born April 8, 1918 in Cambridge, Mass. and in 1952, he moved to Burlington, Mass. He moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1986.

Mr. Lewis was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He worked in graphic arts for 40 years and as a printer for the Wellesley Press for 20 years.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an active resident of the Boothbay Harbor community and was well-known by all.

Family members include his wife of 53 years, Katherine (O'Rourke) Lewis of Boothbay Harbor; two sons, Patrick Lewis of Billerica, Mass. and Kevin Lewis of Burlington, Mass.; two daughters, Sandra Fredette of Auburn, N.H. and Kathy Lewis of Denver, Colo.; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial reception for Mr. Lewis on Friday, January 17, 3 p.m., at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Atlantic Avenue, Boothbay Harbor.

In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Veteran Medical Center, Patient Care, 718 Smyth Road, Manchester, NH 03104.
