Elizabeth "Betty" Lewis
2004-08-05

Elizabeth M. "Betty" Lewis, 89, died early on the morning of August 1, at the Freeport Nursing & Rehab Center.

A longtime resident of Waldoboro, she was born July 21, 1915, the daughter of Clinton and Ida (Welt) Stahl. She received her education in Waldoboro schools, graduating from Waldoboro High School in the Class of 1933.

As a young woman, she worked for her parents at Stahl's Tavern in Waldoboro and in 1938 married Harold Parsons. The family then came to the Damariscotta region, living for 26 years on the Mills Road. Mr. Parsons predeceased her in 1964.

In 1973 she married Robert Lewis, at which time she moved to Academy Hill in Newcastle, where she remained until his death in 1986.

For several years Mrs. Lewis worked as a Teachers Aid at the Franklin School in Newcastle and being a lifelong cat fancier, was active with the Lincoln County Animal Shelter. She attended the Damariscotta Baptist Church and for years enjoyed writing poetry, cooking, knitting and cross stitch, an art she passed on to her granddaughters.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Hall of Woolwich; three granddaughters; seven great-grand-children;

One son, William Parsons predeceased her in 1986.

A service to celebrate Mrs. Lewis's life was held Wednesday, August 4, at the Chapel of the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta. Reverend Russell Thayer, of the Damariscotta Baptist Church officiated. She was laid to rest at the Glidden Street cemetery in Newcastle.

Arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the Strong Funeral Home and Memorial Center, Damariscotta.

Frank Stanley Lewis

Frank Stanley Lewis, 69, of Boothbay Harbor died Thursday, April 29, peacefully at his home after battling a long illness.

Born in Bath on November 26, 1934, he was a son of Maxcy and Edna Lewis.

At age four Mr. Lewis and his parents moved to Barter's Island. He attended local schools and at the age of 17 quit school to join the Navy. After his service in the Navy, he returned to Barter's Island where he worked on fishing boats, dug worms, dug clams, lobstered and worked at area shipyards as a welder.

In 1975 he joined the Maine National Guard as a cook, where he earned the National Guard's highest award, The Quartermaster's Regimental Crest. After serving 17 years he retired in 1992.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Debra Lewis of Boothbay Harbor; two sons, Stanley Lewis and wife Cindy of Barter's Island and Thomas Lewis of Westbrook; one daughter, Melissa McFarland and husband Rob of Barter's Island; two brothers, William Lewis of East Boothbay and Maxcy Lewis of Warner Robbins, Ga.; four grandchildren, Maxwell Lewis, Samantha and Lucas McFarland and Mercedes Dyer.

A funeral service was held Saturday, May 1 at the Boothbay Baptist Church with the Rev. Daniel McNutt officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Frank Lewis to the Miles Home Health/Hospice, Miles Development Office, 35 Miles Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Helen L. S. Lewis
2004-01-22

Helen Louise Shaw Lewis of Nobleboro died Sunday, January 18 peacefully at home in the loving company of her family after a lengthy illness.

Born in Norwood, Massachusetts on November 19, 1914, she was the daughter of John and Mary Shaw. She spent her early years in Norwood and Foxboro, Massachusetts where she graduated from Foxboro High School and then attended Northfield School for Girls.

In July 1940, she married James Newell Lewis of Foxboro. They moved to El Sagundo, California, and eventually returned to Sharon, Mass. where they lived and raised their two daughters. During this time she worked as an executive assistant for Northrop Corporation and Analog Devices while pursuing her interests in community theater with The Walpole Footlighters. She was a patron of the arts and an accomplished pianist and artist.

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis retired to his ancestral home in Nobleboro in 1973, where she was active in St. Andrews Episcopal Church and the Miles Memorial Hospital. She was president of the hospital league for three years during a major expansion of that institution.

Survivors include her husband, James; their daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and David Dash of Edgecomb, and Sally and Harry Pearce of Williamsburg, Va.; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will take place at the Trask Homestead in Nobleboro this summer.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in her memory be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Newcastle.

Kathleen Liberty
2004-04-09

Kathleen Hope Liberty, 54, of Cumberland, daughter of the late Carl and Hilda Burrows, died at Maine Medical Center after her short, but courageous battle against cancer.

Kathy, a lifelong resident of North Yarmouth and Cumberland, graduated from Greely High School, and 35 years ago married her high school sweetheart, Dick Liberty, also a lifelong Cumberland resident. She worked at MSAD 51 in food service. She looked forward to going to work every day to be with her friends..

Kathy was a devoted and beloved wife, mother, nana, sister and auntie. One of her favorite pastimes was writing poetry for all family occasions. Her great cooking was sought after by everyone, especially her famous chocolate chip cookies. Cookouts on Sunday afternoons at Kathy's were memorable family times.

Kathy found peace and joy at the ocean. A day of waves, sand and children filled her with satisfaction. Kathy's loving spirit and nurturing soul made her an extraordinary person.

Kathy was predeceased by sisters Sylvia and Ruth Burrows and brother Dan Burrows.

Kathy will forever be in the hearts of her husband Dick; her three daughters, Andrea Liberty, of Falmouth, Alison Liberty, of Cumberland, and Lindsey Liberty, of Cumberland; her grandchildren, Anthony Liberty, Carl J. Fulda, and Michelle Liberty; her siblings Elizabeth Bendixon and Joyce Perry, both of Gray, Gerald Burrows, Dottie Cormier, and Paula Slipp, of Cumberland, Robert Burrows, of Sanford, Phyllis Courbron, of West Newfield, Bill Burrows, of West Kennebunk, Dora Figur and Anita Wiers, of Durham and Larry Jewett, of Standish; two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Liberty and Brenda Liberty; 33 nieces and nephews, 32 great-nieces and -nephews and 1 great-grand-niece. She will be deeply missed by them all.

The family extends their deepest gratitude for the care Kathy received during her illness from her loving niece, Becky Bendixon, and the staff at Maine Medical Center.

Visiting time was held at The Bible Believing Baptist Church, 92 Center Road, Gray, Thursday, immediately followed by a funeral service. Burial will be in the Walnut Hill at a later date. Pastor Darwin Vail of the Bible Believing Baptist Church will officiate. Memorial donations may be made to the Maine Cancer Foundation, P. O. Box 553 Portland, Maine 04112 Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Mary Jane Lightbown
2004-07-01

Mary Jane Lightbown, a summer resident of Boothbay Harbor for over 40 years, died December 7, 2003.

She was born September 18, 1915.

She was an active community volunteer and delivered Meals on Wheels here. She was a loyal friend with an optimistic and positive attitude and a buoyant personality. She will be sorely missed.

Mrs. Lightbown was a winter resident of New York City and was employed by Time-Life, Fortune magazine and the Museum of Modern Art.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary Fay Hoover; and two nieces.

Roy C. Lincoln
2004-04-01

Roy C. Lincoln Jr., 73, of Whitefield died, Monday, March 22 at his residence.

He was born in Flagstaff on December 10, 1930, the son of Roy C. Sr. and Bertha J. (Jackson) Lincoln.

He grew up in Jefferson and attended Jefferson schools. He joined the U.S. Marines and while in the Marines, his unit was within a mile of the first atomic bomb test in Nevada.

He married Ernestine Bailey on July 23, 1952. He always helped at his father's garage as a mechanic and others when help was needed. He worked at his family's sawmill for many years, Lipman Poultry and Bates Manufacturing in Augusta, and most recently as a truck driver where he owned and operated his own truck for the Maine Department of Transportation, retiring in 1992.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 54 in Wiscasset.

He enjoyed his family, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and talking on his CB radio.

He was predeceased by his son, Dale W. Lincoln on December 27, 1997; two brothers, Mahlon Lincoln Sr. and Earle Lincoln; one sister, Gertrude Stickney; and daughter-in-law, Kathleen Lincoln.

He is survived by his wife, Ernestine Lincoln of Whitefield; five sons, Leroy C. Lincoln and his wife Roxanne of Whitefield, Robert A. Lincoln and his wife Lynn of Wiscasset, Carroll L. Lincoln and his companion Faye of Whitefield, Charles A. Lincoln and his wife Robin of Newcastle, and Daniel R. Lincoln and his companion Penny of Wiscasset; two sisters, Annie Higgins of Albion and Virginia Weaver of Litchfield; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchild-ren and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Friday, March 26 at the Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset. Burial will be at Highland cemetery in Jefferson.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Miles Home Health and Hospice, c/o Development Office, 42 Belvedere Road, Damariscotta, 04543.

E. Ward Logan
2004-09-16

Edwin Ward Logan, of Boothbay and Englewood, Fla., died Monday, September 13, from brain cancer.

Born May 30, 1924 in Mt. Vernon, New York, he was the son of Edwin Francis Logan and Ethel Drew Logan. He attended schools in Bayside, New York and Booth-bay Harbor, graduating from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1942. He attended Harvard College.

During the Second World War, he served in the United States Navy in the Naval Air Corps. During much of his service he was stationed in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.

In 1947 Mr. Logan resumed employment at the House of Logan in Boothbay Harbor, purchasing it in 1959 from his mother, who had begun the business in 1926. He expanded the business and in 1987 sold it to his children upon retirement.

In 1952 he married Ann J. Jones with whom he had three children. She died in 1998. In 2000, he married Arlene B. Ronnick, who survives him.

Bud was a selectman in the Town of Boothbay Harbor serving frequently from the early 1950s through the middle 1970s. He was a member the first Board of Directors of the Boothbay Region YMCA from 1959 and served until 1979, serving as its president from 1976 until 1979. He was made an Honorary Trustee in 1986. He was a trustee of St. Andrews Hospital from 1975 to 1990, serving as its president from 1981 to 1990. In 2003 he was made an Honorary Trustee. He was a member of the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club for 20 years and served a term as president. He helped found the Booth-bay Region Student Aid Fund and served on its Board of Directors. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Boothbay Region Land Trust. In addition, he participated and led a number of significant fund-raising efforts in the Boothbay Region.

Mr. Logan enjoyed collecting art and antiques, traveling, boating, gardening and reading.

In addition to his wife, Arlene B. Logan of Englewood, Fla. and Boothbay, he is survived by three children, William W. Logan of Boothbay Harbor, Alexander T. Logan of Boothbay and Sarah L. Wilcox of Boothbay Harbor; two stepsons, James Ronnick and Richard Ronnick, both of Winter Park, Florida; and nine grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Donna J. Cook, and a brother, William Drew Logan.

A memorial service will be held at the Boothbay Region YMCA Saturday, October 2 at 1:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boothbay Region YMCA, P.O. Box 500, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538 and St. Andrews Hospital, P.O. Box 417, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

John F. Long Sr.
2004-01-08

John Frederick Long Sr., 75, died Friday, January 2 at the Veterans Hospital in Togus.

He was born July 5, 1928 in Boothbay Harbor, the son of William and Nellie (Keller) Long.

He enlisted in the military in 1946 at the end of World War II. He attained the rank of sergeant with the First Occupation Troop. He also served with the Third Cavalry in Germany, the First Infantry and eight months with the 82nd Recon. In 1950, he re-enlisted and served with the 11th Airborne and in 1951, he served in Korea where he lost his right leg. He retired from the military in 1954. He received the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star and the National Defense Service Medal.

After returning to Boothbay Harbor, he was a police officer for the Boothbay Harbor Police Department. Before retiring, he also served as a security officer at Lost Tree Village in Juno, Florida and with the maintenance department at Bigelow Laboratory in West Boothbay Harbor.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nancy (Brewer) Long; three sons, Parker A. of Orlando, Fla., John F. Jr. of Boothbay, and Scott A. of Wiscasset; two daughters, Carrie Stafford and Aundrea LeBreck, both of South China, Maine; a sister, Marjorie Davis of Boothbay Harbor; 14 grandchildren; three nieces; and one nephew.

He was predeceased by a son.

He was baptized in 1968 as a Jehovah Witness and attended the Kingdom Hall in Augusta. His memorial service will be held Saturday, January 10 at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, 36 Eastern Avenue, Augusta.

Arrangements are by Cremation Services of Maine.
