Roberta Brallie Lewis
2005-03-31

Roberta Lewis, 88, died Friday, March 26, at the Gregory Wing in St. Andrews Village, Boothbay Harbor.

Born March 14, 1917 in Port Jervis, New York, she was the daughter of Robert and Margurite Gutherie.

In her early years she worked as a nanny in New York City. She married Kenneth Lewis in June 1938 and they made their home in Port Jervis, New York. Mr. Lewis enlisted in the Navy in 1944; Mrs. Lewis raised their three children and worked in a factory at night while he was gone for over two years. During World War II life was difficult with shortages of food and supplies, but Roberta took care of her family. After 35 years, Mr. Lewis retired from Prudential Insurance. Following his retirement, Roberta and Ken managed an apartment complex in Monticello, New York. She was responsible for all the landscaping there. When her oldest daughter became ill, Roberta took care of her for two years.

She was a member of the Veterans Auxiliary and of the Order of the Eastern Star in Callicoon, New York. She enjoyed flower gardening, playing cards, watching quiz shows on television, and doing crossword puzzles.

In 2001 Mrs. Lewis moved to St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor to be near her daughter Carolyn.

She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Lewis in 1992; and her daughter, Linda Lewis Hillriegel in January 2005.

Survivors include by two daughters, Carolyn Moore of Southport, and Jan Lewis of Liberty, New York; one son, Robert Lewis of Windsor, New York; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grand-children; one brother, Warren Gutherie of Daytona Beach, Florida; and one sister, Alice Millspaulgh of Rochester, New York; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held in Port Jervis, New York at a later date.

Contributions may be made in Mrs. Lewis' memory to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 280, Boothbay, ME 04537.

Local arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington, & Hall Funeral & Cremation Services, Boothbay, Maine.

Mark David Edward Lewis-Giles
2005-06-30

Mark David Edward Lewis-Giles died Tuesday, June 21 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

He was the infant son of Michael Anthony Giles and Amanda Sue Lewis-Giles of Wiscasset.

He was predeceased by a sister, Kayla May Miller.

He was a brother of Michael Anthony Giles, Jr., Logan William Giles, and Jazmyne Paige Marie Lewis, all of Wiscasset. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Mark and Cindy Lewis of Boothbay; paternal grandparents, Brent and Donna Lewis of Boothbay.

A private graveside service was held Monday, June 27 at Oaklawn cemetery in Boothbay Harbor.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Florence Libby dies at 95
2005-04-08

Florence Hamm Libby, 95, of Gray, died March 30.

She was born in East Millinocket on October 9, 1909, a daughter of Winfield Robert and Rose Weymouth Hammm. She graduated from Schenk High School.

She was a registered nurse, and she trained at The Children's Hospital in Portland, Mercy Hospital and Yale Medical School. She worked at Pineland in the early 1930s and again in the 1950s and 1960s. She also worked at Poland Spring job corps, where she was a teacher in the Nurse's Aide program.

She married Wallace Arthur Libby, a civil engineer from Lewiston, and moved with him to Portland. The couple moved to Gray in the early 1950s. She ran a boarding house for the turnpike builders, a roadside diner and a ceramic shop, where she taught ceramic lessons.

She traveled the world with her husband, until he passed away in 1985. Then she moved to San Diego, CA, returning to Gray in 1994. She attended her firsts New Orleans Mardi Gras in 1998, at the age of 89.

For the past year, she has lived in Topsham and attended day programs at The Garden and Respite Care, where she made many friends and had wonderful times.

She was predeceased by her husband, two sisters, Beatrice and Pearl, and two brothers, Alton and Robert.

She is survived by two daughters, Dawn Brent and her husband Richard, of Greensburg, KS, and Elizabeth Kirstead and her husband Ralph, of Eastport; three granddaughters, Beth Carr and her husband Jim, of Topsham, Sarah Gallant, of Gorham, and Liana Morrill, of Bridge City, TX; four grandsons, Nick Morrill and his wife Kelly, of AK, Dan Morrill and his wife Sue, of NH, Peter Gallant and his wife Jennifer, of Portland; and Frank Gallant, Jr., of Greensburg, KS; 12 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; long-time family friends George and Sandra Sailor, of Gray, and their daughters, Kim, Jody and Lynn; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Florence Libby's life was held last Sunday at the Sailors' home in Gray. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Van Liberty
2005-03-11

Van J. Liberty, 89, of New Gloucester, passed away on February 27.

He was the husband of June Liberty.

A graveside service will be held in the spring.

Doris "Skip" Lincoln
2005-03-03

Doris "Skip" Lincoln, 76, died Wednesday, February 23 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Lincoln is survived by her husband of 58 years, Austin Lincoln of Edgecomb.

She is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Pat Nichols and John Nichols of Wiscasset; a son and daughter-in-law, David Lincoln and Jan Lincoln of Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren Carrie Nichols of Damariscotta, Dan Nichols and his wife Sara of Wiscasset, Derek Lincoln of Sarasota, Fla., and Justin Lincoln of Sarasota, Fla.; and great-grandchildren Morgan and Madison Thompson of Damariscotta.

At Mrs. Lincoln's request there will not be a funeral. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Boothbay.

Harold L. Larrabee
2005-08-18

Harold L. Larrabee, 83, of Boothbay, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, August 16 after a long illness.

Born in Portland on January 5, 1922, he was the son of Harold Whitney Larrabee and Jennie May Larrabee.

Mr. Larrabee attended Skowhegan High School and in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was a plank owner on the light cruiser, U.S.S. Denver, and served aboard that ship in the South Pacific until December 1945. His ship fired the first shot in retaking the Philippines and received 11 battle stars and awards. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic/Pacific Theater Medal with two bronze stars and 1 silver star, the Phillippine Liberation Medal with 2 stars, American Theater and Good Conduct Medals.

After the war, he moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut and was employed by Harvey Hubbell Co., and the Bridgeport Brass Co. He retired from Remington Electric Shaver Co., in Milford, Conn. after 20 years of service.

Mr. Larrabee was a life member of the American Legion and a member of the Boothbay Civic Association. A skilled woodworker, he was happiest working on projects in his shop, or repairing radios and electronic equipment.

In 1995 he moved to Boothbay Harbor and married his childhood sweetheart, Alice True Larkin.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Larrabee of Boothbay; one son, Alan Larrabee of Leeds, N.Y.; sisters, Dorothy Frost and her husband Raymond of Mechanic Falls, Janice Godwin of Bryant Pond, Jeanette Hinckley of Otisfield, Peggy Cummins of Lewiston, Violet Rose of California and Carolyn Egnew of Littleton, N.H.; three step-sons, Edrick J. Larkin of Southport, Paul T. Larkin of Woolwich and Shawn E. Larkin of Lewiston; two step-daughters, June E. Wing of Bath, and Laura Larkin of Topsham; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home at a date to be announced. Burial will follow in the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Miles Home Health Hospice, 35 Miles Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 975 Wiscasset Road in Boothbay.

Faith C. Lathbury
2005-09-29

Faith Carlyle Cony Lathbury was born on February 27, 1910 in Waterville, the daughter of Clarence Manley Cony and Louise Williams Cony. She grew up in Waterville and Augusta, and was a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington and attended Boston University. Mrs. Lathbury was a teacher in Augusta and Newton, Mass.

In 1936 she was married to Vincent T. Lathbury, MD, now deceased. They lived in Swarthmore, Penn. for many years. In 1985, she moved to The Fountains, a retirement community, where she remained for the rest of her life.

Mrs. Lathbury was president of the Board of DelCo Child Care Assoc., an organization which established daycare centers in Delaware County, Penn. She was a member of the Society of Friends, the Society of Mayflower Descendants, and the Nine Partners Garden Club of Millbrook, New York. Earlier this year, she was honored as a Lifetime Volunteer by the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, for her volunteer work in the Institute's greenhouse. Survivors include a son, Vincent T. Lathbury III, of Princeton, N.J. and Boothbay; and a daughter, Susan Lathbury Seymour of Glenmont, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Abigail Seymour Greenfield of South Portland, and Christopher Lathbury Seymour of South Boston, Mass.

A memorial service for Mrs. Lathbury will be held on Sunday, October 16 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Allen Lounge at The Fountains, 79 Flint Road, Millbrook, N.Y. Sherwood F. Leighton
2005-09-01

Sherwood Francis Leighton, 82, passed away Sunday, August 28 at St. Andrews Hospital after a long illness.

Born April 28, 1923, he was the son of Hollis and Hannah Leighton in Milbridge. Both of his parents died at an early age so he was raised by his aunt and uncle Carrie and Voranus Strout of Milbridge.

He attended Milbridge High School graduating in the class of 1941. During his high school days he worked with the local electrician in Milbridge After graduating he took a correspondence course for electricians and received his certificate.

During the winter of 1941-1942 he decided to move to Boothbay Harbor to work at Sample's Shipyard where he got into carpentry. He worked with Burton Grant for many years remodeling and building new homes, and later went out on his own doing carpentry work. He worked as a ships carpenter on the Victory Chimes for many years while it was docked in Rockland.

In 1943 he married Audrey Workman of Steuben and they raised two daughters, Sheila and Paula.

Mr. Leighton was a life member of the Fish & Game Club, a 50-year member of Seaside Lodge #144 AF & AM, and was master of the lodge in 1961, '62, '89, and '90. He was District 10 Representative of the Grand Lodge of Maine in 1992 and 1993, and was mason of the year at Seaside Lodge #144 in 1999. Mr. Leighton was past president of Seaside Riders Snowmobile Club and the Down Easters #1 Camping group, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church for which he did a lot of volunteer work. He and Curtis West put on bean hole bean suppers for 45 years, Easter breakfast for 35 years and lobster stew suppers. He also put on lobster bakes for the Rotary Club and his camping group, Down Easters #1.

He was a member of the Boothbay Region Senior Citizens and enjoyed his three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Paula Leighton; three sisters, Theresa Leighton, Marguerite Kelley, and Lena Noonan; sister-in-law, Ruth Leighton; and sister and brother-in-law, Theo and Sherman Brown.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Audrey Workman Leighton; one daughter, Sheila Leighton Lewis and her husband Wendall of Boothbay; three granddaughters, Gerry Lynn Kierstead and her husband Edward of Strafford, N.H., Kerina Morton and her husband David of Trevett, and Vicki Brown and her husband Chester of Friendship; great-grandchildren, Ryan Morton of Friendship, Jessica Hisler of Friendship, and Kristie Morton and Zackary Morton, both of Trevett one brother, Alton Leighton of Gouldsboro Point; one sister, Velma Workman and her husband Warren of Southwest Harbor; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 1 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church. Rev. Carol Stevens will officiate. Burial will follow in the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Sherwood's memory to Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church, Box 641, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Lois Mary Lindsey
2005-03-31

Lois M. Lindsey, 90, of Newcastle, died 16 days before her 91st birthday, on the evening of Sunday, March 27, at Cove's Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta.

Born in Bangor, April 12, 1914, she was the daughter of Herbert A. & Rosabelle (Hurd) Freeman.

She was graduated from Old Town High School and coming to Rockland as a young woman, worked many years at Green Island Packing Company. She later relocated to the Bath area, where she worked at both the Congress Shirt Company and Stinson Canning.

In 1956, she and her family moved to Connecticut, where she worked for over 25 years at Better Packages Company, retiring in 1981, at which time she and her husband came back to Maine, settling in Newcastle.

Mrs. Lindsey was a longtime member of the Grange.

She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Elmer Lindsey, in 2001.

Survivors include her children, Gerald C. Lindsey, Richard A. Lindsey and Carol L. Stewart, all of Newcastle; 23 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Lindsey will be at 3 p.m., Saturday, May 21, at the Chapel of the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta. She will be laid to rest, with her husband, May 22, at the Pine Hill Cemetery, Orrington.

If desired, the family wishes donations made to Miles Home Health/Hospice, Box 4500, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Damariscotta.
