Louise B. Mackenzie
1999-06-17

Louise Barr Mackenzie, 91, of Providence, Rhode Island, Professor of English Emerita at Wheaton College, died Wednesday, June 9 at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Superior Court Justice William M. Mackenzie.

Born in Cape May, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Marie Barr. She lived in Providence for most of her life and was a long-time summer resident of Little Compton and Isle of Springs.

She graduated from Wheaton in 1930 and earned her master's degree at Radcliffe in 1934. Before joining the faculty at Wheaton, she briefly taught at Wellesley College. She completed her education at Brown University, where she studied from 1940 to 1942.

Mrs. Mackenzie was named Professor Emerita at Wheaton in 1971. She was a member of Wheaton's Sesquicentennial National Advisory Committee, served as president of her class in the 1980s, was a member of the editorial board, and was granted the Alumnae Achievement Award in 1978.

She was a member of the Providence Athenaeum, Providence Art Club, Rhode Island Council on the Arts and Central Congregational Church.

Survivors include a son, William M. Mackenzie Jr. of Sherman Oaks, California; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Tuesday, June 22 in Central Congregational Church, Angell Street, Providence, Rhode Island.

John Elwell MacNeil
1999-01-08

John Elwell MacNeil, a 30-year resident of Gray, died in the Maine Medical Center in Portland on December 27. He was 78 years old.

Born in Boston, Mr. MacNeil lived in Walpole and Norwood, MA, and graduated from Brookline High School with the class of 1938.

At one time, he was a partner in the Creamer & MacNeil Catering Company of Boston, which catered most of the Communion breakfasts held by Cardinal Cushing. After he moved to Maine, he managed the Carriage Lantern, a gift shop in South Portland, for 20 years. In 1996, he retired as a tolltaker on the Maine Turnpike after 10 years.

Mr. MacNeil served in the United States Coast Guard in World War II. He had been a Eucharistic Minister in St. Gregory's Church.

He was the beloved husband of Mary Catherine (MacDonald) MacNeil; the loving father of Carol Ann Walsh, of Walpole, MA, John MacNeil, of New York, and Sandra M. Willis, of New Mexico; and the cherished grandfather of 10. He was the brother of Stanley MacNeil, of Florida and Maine, Florence Caswell, of Florida, and the late William MacNeil.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Blessed Sacrament Church, Walpole. A memorial Mass will be held in St. Gregory's Church on Saturday, January 9, at 11 A.M. Friends and relatives are kindly invited.

James S. Mains
1998-04-02

James S. Mains, Jr., 77, of Norway died Monday, March 30, 1998 at his residence. He was born in Naples on May 5, 1920, the son of James S. Sr. and Cora Brackett Mains.

He attended Naples schools. Mr. Mains proudly served our country in the US Army during World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient. He married Esther N. Grover on Feb. 27, 1946.

He was pre-deceased by her in 1985. Mr. Mains worked for C.B. Cummings & Son for 40 years and retired in 1988. He was a member of the American Legion Stone-Smart #82 in Norway.

He is survived by his stepson, Frank Walker, of Arundel; a sister, Ruth Dyer, of Bridgton; six nephews, George S. Mains of South Paris, Lendal Mains of Buxton, David Dyer of Bridgton, Kenneth Dyer of Bridgton, Donald Dyer of North Windham, and Elisha Mains of Bridgton; nine grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was pre-deceased by a stepson, Errol Walker, and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 21 Main St., South Paris. at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, with Rev. Melvin Young officiating and military services will be provided provided by American Legion Stone-Smart #82 of Norway. Interment will be in the spring at Hillside cemetery in E. Stoneham.

Mr. George S. Mains
1999-06-17

SOUTH PARIS - George S. Mains, 72, of High Street, South Paris, died Thursday, June 10 at a South Paris health care facility.

Born in Westbrook, he was a son of Harry L. and Olive F. Pray Mains. He attended Windham schools.

Mr. Mains had been a member of the North Windham Fire Department, a police officer in the town of Windham and a Cumberland Country constable.

For 39 and a half years, Mr. Mains was a Corrections Officer. When he was hired as a guard at the South Windham Corrections Center, he was the youngest guard to be hired. He worked in South Windham for 33 years and established the first Pre-release Center.

During his working years in South Windham, he was also teaching at the Police Academy in Waterville for 17 years. His last six years in corrections were spent as the head of the Pre-release Center in Hallowell. He retired in 1986.

Mr. Mains was a member of the Blue Knights motorcycle Groups, a member of Presumpscot Masonic Lodge, St. Albans Commandry and Kora Shrine Temple. He enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, and being with his friends.

Surviving him are his wife of 17 years, Theresa M. Fearon Mains of South Paris; three daughters, Carol A. Roberts of Limerick, Vickie L. Mains of Windham, and Holly F. Caron of Elgin, SC; two stepdaughters, Joan Mattison of Troupsburg, NY and Patricia Robinette of Hollywood, FL; four stepsons, Edward Fortin of Bronx, NY, Michael Fortin of Lewiston, Alan Fortin of Baltimore, MD, and Thomas Fortin of Kernersville, NC; 21 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren

Visiting hours were held on Sunday, June 13, at the Dolby Funeral Home in Windham and the funeral was on Monday, June 14, at the chapel, Reverend Lawrence Gilbert, officiating. Interment was in Arlington Cemetery, Windham. Contributions may be made in his memory to Androscoggin Home Health, Main Street, Lewiston, ME 04290.

Doris M. MacGown
1999-05-06

PITTSFIELD - Doris M. MacGown, 89, died April 27, at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital. She was born July 3, 1909, in West Paris, the youngest daughter of Ora H. and Gertrude (Bacon) Marston.

She attended West Paris Elementary School and was a graduate of South Paris High School, Class of 1927. She was also a member of the High School Alumni Association.

She worked as a secretary until her marriage to Lester W. MacGown of Gorham, NH on October 27, 1929.

She worked with Mr. MacGown as a secretary/bookkeeper in his business of MacGown Electronics which later became MacGown & Young Radio and Television Service. She also managed their record department.

In 1950 she became one of the earliest lady Ham Radio Operators in the state of Maine with her station call letters of WISRQ. She was a member of the Yankee Radio Club, the State of Maine Lady Ham Radio Club (SMLY'S), and a member of the Bangor's Pine State Radio Club. She was also a charter member of the Oxford County Amateur Radio Club and the South Paris Mothers Club.

Mrs. MacGown was predeceased by her husband, Lester W. MacGown, January 15, 1999.

She is survived by two sons, Richard MacGown of Pittsfield and Matthew MacGown of Mississippi; two daughters, Julianne MacGown of South Paris and Virginia Clark of Texas; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, David Young, of Norway.

A graveside service for Lester and Doris MacGown will be held at 1 p.m. on May 22, at the Wayside Cemetery, Main Street, West Paris.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Sebasticook Valley Hospital, 99 Grove Street, Pittsfield 04967 or the Pine State Radio Club.

Arrangements are with D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel in Pittsfield.

Raymond J. Mack
1998-12-10

NORWAY - Raymond J. Mack, 80, of West Paris died Saturday, December 5, 1998 at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

He was born in Eddington on September 2, 1918, the son of John and Flora Stinnaford Mack, and was a graduate of South Paris High School.

He worked for many years in construction for Callahan of Mechanic Falls.

He was a member of the Mission Congregational Church in West Paris.

He had lived in the West Paris area all of his life.

He married Impi Pulkkinen on March 22, 1975.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Sonya Haverinen of South Paris; four stepchildren, Ida M. Lovejoy of West Paris, Elias P. McKeen of West Paris, Gloria E. Gray of Norway, Henry A. McKeen of Washington; 12 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Russell Mack of West Paris and several nieces and nephews.

At the request of Mr. Mack there were no services.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Mack's memory my be sent to the Mission Congregational Church, c/o Cynthia Immonen, South Paris, ME 04281.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris.

Dorothy A. MacDonald
1999-05-27

SOUTH PARIS - Dorothy A. MacDonald, 68, of Mechanic Falls died Sunday at the Maine Veterans Home.

She was born in Frye, Maine, June 4, 1930, the daughter of William and Flora Bushley Burgess.

She graduated from Mexico High School and for a time worked at Oxford Paper Co. in Rumford. She had worked at Weatherbee's Nursing Home in Mechanic Falls and was one of the first people hired at Clover Manor back in the 1970s. She also worked at the Murphy Home and did babysitting for people in their home.

For many years she was a correspondent for the Lewiston Daily Sun/Evening Journal covering the Mechanic Falls area.

Mrs. MacDonald was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Floyd-Harlow Post 9787 VFW Auxiliary. She was a chaperone for the Comets Drum and Bugle Corps,she enjoyed crocheting and making baby blankets. Her flower garden and hummingbirds gave her great enjoyment as did her close friends, Hazel Thurlow with whom she played cards and other friends, Gloria Chabot, Linda Lenehan and Nina Stimson.Walking was her favorite pastime. She could be seen walking all over town to visit friends.

She married Edmund A. MacDonald who died April 16, 1997.

Survivors include her daughter Mary MacDonald of Rumford; two sons, Michael, and his wife, Cindy, of Greene and Peter III of Mechanic Falls; her mother of South Paris; four sisters and their husbands, Sally and Bud Russell of New Gloucester, Marilyn and Richard MacDonald of St. John, New Brunswick, Margaret Louise and Ralph Brooks of Seaside, Oregon and Mary Janitais of Lisbon Falls; three brothers and their wives, Richard and Nellie Burgess of Rumford, Ashley and Connie Burgess of Lewiston and Herbert of Canton; three grandchildren, Christina, Brandon and Bryan. She was predeceased by a daughter, Marjorie.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Ransom Church, Mechanic Falls. Interment will take place Friday at 11a.m. at St. Johns Cemetery, Rumford.

Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers those who wish may make gifts in her memory to the Resident Fund, c/o Maine Veterans' Home, High St, South Paris, ME or the Mechanic Falls Fire Department or Rescue Associations, P.O. Box 191, Mechanic Falls, ME.

Mrs. Kathryn Greene Malcolm
1999-08-26

ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC - Kathryn Greene Malcolm, 87, beloved mother and grandmother, died Sunday, August 15, 1999 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

She was born in South Paris, November 30, 1911, and was the daughter of Edward Leon and Gertrude Jones Greene.

Mrs. Malcolm was a graduate of Paris High School, class of 1929, resided in Elmhurst, NY for nearly 60 years before moving to Roanoke Rapids in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Alexander M. Malcolm.

She is survived by two sons, Donald A. and his wife, Becky Malcolm of Roanoke Rapids, Stanley E. and his wife, Julie Malcolm of Marlborough, CT; five grandchildren, Stephanie Whitehead and her husband,Russell, of Fayetteville, NC, Julie Reinhart and her husband, Kurt, of Missoula, MT, Elizabeth Ward and her husband David of Bracknell, England, Jillian and Ian Malcolm of Marlborough, CT.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 21, at Cedarwood cemetery with Reverend William Sabiston, III officiating. Wrenn Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to The First United Methodist Church, 339 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870, where Mrs. Malcolm was a member.
