Charles C. Mandell
1999-02-18

Charles C. Mandell, 74, of Charlottesville, Virginia and longtime summer resident of Squirrel Island, died Tuesday, February 9, in Cedars Nursing Home in Charlottesville.

Born May 30, 1924, in Newton, Mass., he was the son of the late Carolyn B. and George W. Mandell.

Mr. Mandell, ``Chuck," was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Corps for 3-1/2 years. A pioneer in the pen and ink industry for over five decades, Chick recently retired after 13 years as sales manager for National Ink, Inc. of Santee, Calif. A lifelong nature lover, he was a member of the National Audubon Society and the National Geographic Society.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine K. Mandell; three children; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his wife's two children and two grandchildren; and his sister, Judy Mandell Danforth.

A celebration of his life was held at his home in Charlottesville on Friday, February 12.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1290 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

Priscilla D. Mansfield
1998-06-25

Priscilla (Draper) Mansfield, 93, of Canton, Mass., a homemaker, died on Monday, June 15 at the Ellis Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center of Norwood, Mass. She was the wife of George Mansfield Sr., who died in 1990. Mrs. Mansfield was a summer resident of Boothbay Harbor for many years.

She was the daughter of the late Walter S. and Gertrude (Hale) Draper. A life-long resident of Canton, Mass., Mrs. Mansfield attended Canton schools and graduated from Abbott Academy of Andover, Mass. She had been a member of both the Garden Club of Canton and Alliance of the Canton Unitarian Church, also a Red Cross volunteer.

Survivors include a son, George M. Mansfield Jr. of Norton, Mass.; a brother, Walter S. Draper of Canton, Mass.; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

She was also the sister of the late Elsie D. Court and Barbara D. Trask.

Funeral services and burial will be private.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be sent to the Foundation of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, 243 Charles Street, Boston, MA 02114-9942. Arrangements by the Sheehan Funeral Home, Stoughton, Mass.

Alice Kneeland Marr
1998-06-11

Alice Kneeland Marr, 97, of South Waterford died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at the Market Square Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center after being a resident for the past month.

She was born in Norway on September 20, 1900, the daughter of Warner and Nellie Lord Kneeland. She attended school in South Waterford. Mrs. Marr had worked in her younger days at Morse Orchards and Camp Kokosing. She married Earl L. Marr on May 12, 1919; he predeceased her in 1983. They had four children and lived at their homestead in South Waterford for 74 years. They raised produce for the local canneries for years. Mrs. Marr was a loving mother and housewife for the majority of her life. She was a member of the South Waterford Grange. Mrs. Marr enjoyed being at home and seeing her cat, Felix, her family including all her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and her neighbors. Following her recent stroke, she became a resident of Market Square Healthcare.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law Earl L. Jr. and Jeannette Marr of Rumford; two daughters, Mary Andrews of North Waterford and Ann Forrest of Kissimee, FL; 20 grandchildren, Earla Marr Gamage, Denis Marr, Danny Marr, June Marr Giambattista, Joan Marr Hamann, Janice Marr Durland, Jeanie Andrews Stone, Clifford Andrews, David Andrews, Thomas Andrews, Linda Marr Pendexter, Frank Marr, Carole Anne Marr Turner, Michael and Randall Morrison, Jaclyn Morrison Proctor; 40 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; a daughter-in-law Joan Marr of South Waterford; a sister-in -law Helen Marr Coleman of Auburn; a cousin Althea Sawyer and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one son J. Roger Marr; a sister Ruth who died at the age of 33; two sons-in-law Oscar Andrews and Del Forrest and a granddaughter Jackie Marr Mease.

Graveside memorial services were held on Wednesday, June 10 in the Elm Vale cemetery in South Waterford with Rev. Norman Rust officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stoneham Rescue, P.O. Box 42, E. Stoneham, ME 04231. Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

Herbert H. Mike' Marshall
1999-03-04

SOUTH PARIS - Herbert H. Mike' Marshall. 82, of New York, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at the Maine Veterans' Home in South Paris where he was the first resident.

He was born in Staceyville, Maine, on January 26, 191'7, son of the late J. Henry and Lucinda Boynton Marshall.

He attended schools in Patten and graduated from Mattawamkeag High School in 1937. After working in local mills for two years, he attended Farmington Normal School for two years and enlisted in the An-ny Air Corps in June of 1941.

During the war he had assignments in Fort Devens, MA, Springfield, MA, Spokane, WA, Tucson, AZ, and Camp Douglas, WS. In 1942, he was shipped to Polebrook, England as a supply sergeant of the 351st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. Promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant, he was responsible for supplying B-17s with spare parts.

In 1944, he met and married his loving wife, Barbara Elizabeth Garsidc in Bradford, England.

After the war, he attended Boston University, where he graduated in 1947.

The following year, he went to work for the Westbrook School Department where he taught 7th and 8th grade and coached four sports.

Later he moved to Barre, VT, where he became principal of Mathewson Elementary School, then to Hardwick, VT, as principal of Hardwick Academy.

In 1960 he became principal of North Middlesex Regional High School in Townsend, MA.

During this time, he obtained an M.S. Ed from the University of New Hampshire. I

n 1964 he was hired a-, the first principal of the new Seekonk High School in Seekonk, MA, where he coordinated the hiring of a complete staff, curriculum and opening of a state-of-the-art high school. After serving as principal for over 10 years, he became the area coordinator for vocational education. He retired to Norway, in 1979.

During his career he belonged to many civic, cultural and professional organizations. He was most proud of having been a Mason and serving as a director for the Green Mountain Special Needs program, and as a volunteer veteran's counselor for the American Red Cross.

He was a member of the Norway Congregational Churches, Norway Historical Society, the American Legion and ran for the Legislature in 1986. He was a deputy sheriff for the Oxford County Sheriffs department. He was a long time volunteer and participant for the local RSVP program

He is survived by his wife, Barbara E. Marshal,l of Norway; five sons, Michael and David of Norway, Christopher of Rumford, James of West Paris, Andrew of Norway; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Mary) Mello of Seekonk, MA; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Wright of Scarborough, Mrs. Thelma Tiffany of Gorham, Mrs. Ruth Bumgardner of North Highlands, NC; two brothers, Robert Marshall of Mashpee, MA, and Paul Marshall of Hope, ME. He was predeceased by a sister, Ada Gilley, and a brother, Richard Marshall. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren of whom he was, particularly fond.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, March 5 at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Maine Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster Street, Portland, ME 04101.

Lorraine Martell, 55
1999-07-16

Lorraine L. Martell, of Gray, died Saturday at Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Lewiston, the daughter of Lucein R. and Bernadette Dupruis Gilbert, and graduated Lewiston High School in 1963.

She married Bruce Martell in 1964; they celebrated their 35th anniversary on July 4, 1999. Mrs. Martell loved floral designing and working at the Ladyslipper Flower Shop, traveling, her swimming pool, her camp in Millinocket, and she worshipped her grandchildren. She was active and loved by her communities of Gray and Millinocket. She was a loving wife and precious mother.

She is held in the hearts of her survivors: her husband of 35 years, Bruce Martell, of Gray; three sons, Peter and William both of New Gloucester; Paul, of Gray; a daughter, Mary Jane of Falmouth; two sisters, Carmen Clifford, of Lewiston, and Pauline Iannotti, of Auburn; two loving daughters-in-law; and four grandchildren.

A memorial mass was held at St. Gregory's Parish in Gray. Father Rene Lavoie was the Celebrant.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Cancer Community Center, 778 Main St., South Portland, ME 04106.

Ahti Martikainen
1999-03-25

HARRISON - A lifetime resident of Harrison, Ahti Martikainen passed away on March 18, after a brief illness.

Mr. Martikainen was born September 29, 1920, the son of Hannah L. and John W. Martikainen, and grew up in the Maple Ridge area of Harrison.

His personal appreciation for Maine's woods led him to a number of forestry related positions throughout his life. He was a truck driver for the Thomas Lumber Company, a surveyor's assistant to Toppan Kimball of Bridgton, and went on to become a registered land surveyor and consultant forester for the remainder of his professional life.

He also served several years as the tree warden for the town of Harrison. While in that capacity he coordinated the selection, placement, and even planted hundreds of trees to replace those lost throughout the community to Dutch Elm disease, and was instrumental in the development of Crystal Lake Park. He and his wife Mary were also active in the American Tree Farm System.

Over the course of his life he was in a number of community activities.

As a WW II Veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, he was a member of the VFW. Mr. Martikainen served in the Harrison Volunteer Fire Department, in the capacity of Deputy Chief for several years, and was a charter member and regular participant of the Finnish American Heritage Society at the local, regional, and national level. He volunteered with Harrison's Merry Maids 4-H Club, the Cumberland County .All Star Dairy Club, and was selected as a chaperone for Maine's 4-H Dairy delegation to Eastern States Exposition a number of years. Most recently he had been in the Harrison Historical Society and very involved in supporting the Deertrees Theatre and Cultural Center.

His quiet behind the scenes approach to community involvement earned him a number of special recognitions. He was honored as Outstanding Natural Resources Volunteer by Cumberland County Extension in 1986, as Maine's Outstanding Extension Volunteer in Conservation in 1987, as well as being recognized for extraordinary public service by the Jefferson Awards committee that same year.

Mr. Martikainen traveled extensively with his wife throughout his life. In keeping with his belief of maintaining family as top priority, the Martikainens often made visits to the homes of their children in the U.S. as well as Asia and Europe.

He was preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 52 years, two sisters, and two brothers.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen L.M. Cross of Springfield, VA, her husband, Jim, and their son, Jonathan; daughter, Janet E.M. Libby, of Harrison and her sons, Chris and Geof; son, Keith R. Martikainen of Hastings, NB, his wife, Kay, and their children, Amanda, Kimberly, Katie, Jacob, Jonathan and Melissa. He is also held in the thoughts of three siblings: sister, Lina McKeen of Bridgton; brother, Toimi Martikainen of East Hartford, CT and sister, Ruth Hoyt of Wilimantic, CT. Through marriage he is also remembered by brothers, Arthur Howard of Port Charlotte, FL and Robert Howard of Colorado Springs, CO; sister, Rachel Bacon of Naples and their families, as well as several nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

Services will be held in the spring. Visiting hours were on Monday, March 22, at the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home in Bridgton.

Florence H. Martin
1999-08-26

Florence H. Martin, 88, formerly of the Arbors in Manchester, Conn., passed away peacefully on Aug. 11 at Manchester Manor. She was one of three daughters of the late Luther W. Humphrey and Mary H. Brown of Augusta.

She taught second graders at the former Nash School in Augusta. During the summer she worked at the Songowood resort in Casco where she met her husband, Edgar P. Martin of Eagle Lake. They were married in Augusta in 1942.

During World War II, Florence worked at Loring Air Force base and at the Raytheon plant. Near the end of the war the couple moved to Van Buren where Edgar accepted a position as superintendent of schools and they began raising a family. They moved to Auburndale, Mass. in 1953, to Keene, N.H. in 1954, and then to Connecticut in 1957.

Florence had a life-long love for the Maine coast. Every summer during her childhood she and her family made the long journey by horse and buggy from Augusta to their cottage on John's Bay in Bristol. Florence and Edgar continued to summer in the area for 50 years of their marriage. During the 1980s, Florence was a staff volunteer who greeted thousands of visitors as they began their tour of the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse Museum.

To her family and friends, Florence will be remembered for her sharp Maine wit and especially for her devotion to her husband and children.

Florence leaves her daughter Valerie Heath, son-in-law Michael, and grandson Benjamin of Brunswick; her son Peter and daughter-in-law Patricia of Amston Lake, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. Florence will be buried by her family next to her husband at the Harrington Cemetery, Bristol. A memorial gathering for both Florence and her husband Edgar is being planned for a later date at the Arbors, 403 West Center St., Manchester, Conn. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. The John F. Tierney Funeral Home, Manchester, has charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Helen T. Martin
1998-09-03

NORWAY - Helen T. Martin, 68, of South Paris died Saturday August 29, 1998, at the Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway. She was born in Naugatuck, Connecticut on July 25, 1930, the daughter of Ernest and Anna Mayberry. She attended school in Woodstock and Poland.

She loved to play bingo and go on long rides.Mrs. Martin also enjoyed roller skating and loved life itself. She had been a homemaker most of her adult life, although she worked at Barjo's and other places.

She is survived by her husband Percy Martin, Sr. of South Paris; five sons, David Mayberry Sr. and Percy Martin Jr., both of Oxford, Danny Martin of Woodstock, Ricky Martin of Rumford, and Gary Martin of Auburn; four daughters, Marie Canwell of Auburn, Ruth Berry of South Paris, Debbie Mayberry of South Paris and Christina Thomas of Mechanic Falls; 32 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one son.

Graveside services were held at on Monday August 31, at the Maple Grove cemetery in Mechanic Falls. Arrangements were under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

Richard L. Mason
1999-02-11

NORWAY - Richard L. Mason, 65, of South Paris, died Sunday, February 7 at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Belfast on July 15, 1933, the son of Carrie Cousins Mason.

He was educated in Belfast schools. He served his country in the U S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He had worked at Paris Gladding.

Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Martha and Jacques Wiseman, I, of Mechanic Falls; three grandchildren, Mindi and Nikki Ward, and Jacques Wiseman, II all of Mechanic Falls, one great-grandchild, Martika Ward, and a sister, Myrtio Bryant of Panama City, FL.

There will be private memorial services at a later date, Interment will be at the Maine Veterans cemetery in Augusta.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.
