Bertha A. Matthews
1999-02-25

Bertha A. Matthews, 66, of Southport, died Monday, February 22 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born October 22, 1932 in Mexico, she was the daughter of John Sr. and Effie Brewer Arsenault. She came to the Boothbay region when she was ten years old. She was a domestic helper for many people in the region.

Mrs. Matthews was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and was an avid Beano layer.

She was predeceased by her husband, Merle R. Matthews Sr., who died in 1976.

Survivors include one son, Merle R. Matthews Jr. of Southport; one daughter, Donna L. Matthews of Bath; one half-sister, Betty Dalbec of Portland; two granddaughters, Melissa Jean Matthews and Heather Sue Matthews, both of Wiscasset; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 25 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27, Boothbay. Burial will be in the Oaklawn cemetery in Boothbay Harbor in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Gordon May
1998-10-01

Gordon Kingsbury May of Needham, Mass. and Boothbay Harbor, died suddenly on July 31 in Needham.

Born in Winchester, Mass. in 1912, he was brought to Needham his first year to his grandparents' home to which his greatgrandmother had moved in the mid 1860s.

Mr. May was a graduate of Needham High School in 1931 and of Monson Academy and Boston University.

He will be remembered as one of four 60-year choir members of First Parish in Needham honored on May 31 and pictured in the Boston Globe and local newspapers. In his college years he had sung for five years in the Melrose Unitarian choir.

After his employment at printing firms (T.O. Metcalf) in retirement he sang for over a dozen years with the Lincoln Arts Chorus in Boothbay Harbor where he was a lifelong summer resident of Wall Point. He also sang in the Ecumenical Chorus in Needham and in the Needham Retired Men's Glee Club until recent years.

Mr. May was a member of the former Wig & Whiskers Club, appearing often in their productions. He was a strong supporter of the Needham Historical Society and of concert organizations over many decades right up to the Needham Concert Society of today.

Survivors include his sister, Elizabeth D. May of Needham; cousins, Mrs. Jeanette Stickney of Boothbay Harbor and Lancaster, Mass, with her daughter, Charlotte (Mrs. Robert Follansbee) and family, Howell Chickering of Woodstock, Vt., the Polansky family of Lancaster, Mass, Dana Barrows of Damariscotta, and the Daniel Jamesons of Boothbay Harbor.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, September 27 at the First Parish Church in Needham, Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the Music Fund of First Parish in Needham, 23 Dedham Avenue, Needham, MA 02492, or one's choice of charity.

Pamela J. Norton Mayberry
1999-02-25

LEWISTON - Mrs. Pamela J. Norton Mayberry, 50, died Wednesday, February 17, at the Marshwood Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation in Lewiston with her loved ones by her side, after a battle with cancer. Since 1988 she has been a resident of Tiger Hill Road in Poland and was formerly of Norway.

She was born in Norway on January 5, 1949, the daughter of Louise (Wentworth) Guilford. She was a graduate of Oxford Hills High School with the class of 1967. She worked in local shoe shops and other area businesses and most recently at Mecon Manufacturing as an assembly person. She had attended the Norway Congregational Church.

Survivors include her husband of 21 years, Timothy Mayberry of Poland; one daughter, Mrs. Maurice (Michelle Norton) Pelletier of Auburn; a new grandson, who brought much happiness to her, four-month-old Caelan Michael Pelletier of Auburn; her grand nephew, Chris Dresser of Oxford; one sister, Darlene Payne and her fianc, Dexter, of Canton; three brothers, Richie Guilford, and his fiance, Mary of Caanan, Michael Guilford, of Standish and Tommy Guilford, and his wife, Marilyn, of Long Branch, NJ. She was predeceased by a daughter, Lisa Marie Norton, who died in 1986.

At her request there are no calling hours and graveside services will be held in the spring at the Maple Grove cemetery in Mechanic Falls.

Those who desire may contribute to an organization of your choice to help prevent Child Abuse. Arrangements are under the direction of the Meader & Son Funeral Home in Rumford.

Philip Wyman McAllister
1998-02-26

CULPEPER, VA - Philip Wyman McAllister, 55, of Culpeper,VA, died February 19, 1998, at Culpeper Memorial Hospital. Mr. McAllister was born August 30, 1942, in Norway to the late Raynold McAllister and Ethel Marion Kimball McAllister.

Mr. McAllister is survived by his wife, Kathy Ann McAllister; three sons, Roland Curit, Nicholas Curit and Christopher McAllister; two daughters, Traci Busching and Cassandra Ayala and seven grandchildren.

Additional survivors include two brothers, Raynold McAllister of South Paris, Robert McAllister of Otisfield and one sister, Kellie Allen of Oxford Maine.

Private funeral services were held in Virginia Beach.

Found & Sons Funeral Home, Culpeper, is in charge of the arrangements.

Vivian Agnes McAllister
1998-03-05

WILLISTON, FL - Vivian Agnes McAllister, 73, died Monday, February 16, 1998 at the Nature Coast Regional Hospital, Williston, after a long illness. Mrs. McAllister was born December 3, 1924, in Derby, Vermont, the daughter of Maurice J. and Viola A. (Lemere) Moeykens.

She and her husband moved to Williston six years ago from Norway. She was a telephone operator at Norway, Brunswick, Bath and Lewiston for New England Telephone Co., at Aberdeen, Maryland, for Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co., at Windsor Lockes, CT, for Southern New England Telephone Co. and the University of Hartford at West Hartford, CT.

Earlier in her life she belonged to the Norway Grange and the Round Mountain Grange at Albany and assisted with Girl Scouts of America in Norway before her marriage. She enjoyed square dancing with the founders of the `Swinging Bears' at South Waterford. She was a den mother for the cub scouts at Union, NH while she lived there, and spent a few years as Director of Parent Evolvement for New England Headstart Program, traveling to Boston, Cincinnati Ohio, and Denver Colorado, for whatever her office deemed necessary. She also spent several years on the Board of Directors for the Progress Center, Norway. She served on the Norway Lakes Association representing Little Pennesseewassee Lake, three years on the school board for SAD 17, Oxford County and two terms on the parish council for St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church, Norway. She belonged to the Ladies Guild at the Holy Family Catholic Church, enjoyed card parties, domino games and bingo along with the social activities at Holy Family Church with friends and family.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Earl, of Williston; three sons, Dwight of Lewiston, David of Norway and Dean McAllister of Williston; four daughters, Julie Hebert of South Paris, Joan McAllister of San Francisco, California, Jaclyn Hager of Kingman and Jana Weymouth of Otisfield; two brothers, Dale of Farmingdale, and Alan Moeykens of Bowdoinham and five grandchildren, Jason Hebert, Nathan Libby, Patricia Hager, Joseph Jajeh, and Tyler Weymouth.

She was pre-deceased by a daughter, Janene Agnes McAllister, on December 9, 1967.

Vivian A. McAllister

SOUTH PARIS - Graveside services will be held for Vivian A. McAllister on Saturday, May 16 at 11 a.m. at the Riverside Annex Cemetery, South Paris.

Arrangements are by Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Will H. McAllister
1999-01-21

NORTH WATERFORD - Will H. McAllister, 81, or Route 35 North Waterford died Sunday, January 10, 1999, at the Maine Medical Center. He was born on March 3, 1917 in Albany, the son of Will and Eva Goodwin McAllister and was educated in Albany schools.

Mr. McAllister did farm work, was a woodsman, worked for C. N. Brown Lumber Mill in Lovell and for 18 years at Grover Lumber.

In his later years he drove horses for Evergreen Valley Ski Lodge and he has shoed horses all his life. He was previously married to Edith Arsenault and Wilma O'Brien. His last wife, Violet Hodgkins, died in 1991. He lived in North Waterford for the last 35 years.

He is survived by two sons, Delbert of Albany, Donald of Norway; one daughter, Jo-Ann Farris of Gilead; two stepdaughters, Barbara Dugin of Norway and Shirley Rogers of Waterford; eight grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

McAllister was predeceased by a son, Ronald, and a grandson, Delbert Jr.

A graveside service for Mr. McAllister will be held in the spring at Hillside cemetery in Stoneham. Reverend Violet Eastman will officiate. Donations may be made in memory of Mr. McAllister to Stoneham Rescue. Arrangements were made by Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

Dennis C. McAllister
1999-02-11

NORTH WATERFORD - Dennis C. McAllister, 46, of North Waterford died Saturday February 6, 1999 at his residence.

He was the son of Irving W. and Kathleen Dunn McAllister. He was born in Lewiston on July 6, 1952.

He was educated in Waterford and Oxford Hills High School graduating in 1970. During his school years he worked summers at Camp KoKosing in Waterford. He also was employed by several contractors, including Manley Kimball, helping with concrete foundations, Prentiss Kimball as a carpenter, Vaughn Thurston also as a carpenter, and Azel Littlefield also as a carpenter, before he started a concrete Business with Don Davis as a partner, to whom he sold his share in 1978.

He then worked for Maine Central Railroad before starting his own excavation business known as D.C. McAllister Excavation in 1984. In June of 1993 he received his certification for Erosion Control Practices - the first one issued in the State of Maine.

He served the town of Waterford in many ways. He was involved with the Waterford Fire Department since the age of 13 when he attended meetings and fires with his father, the late Irving W. McAllister. D.C. was presentley assistant Fire Chief of Waterford. He had served as a member of the building committee for the new municipal complex and Fire Station. He was also a member of the sound level limit commission in 1997. He was a member of the Sno-Packers Snowmobile Club of North Waterford and the Maine State Snowmobile Association.

He loved family and home. They always came first. He was an avid sportsman and loved the outdoors, duck hunting, deer hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. For several years he was a sponsor and a member of the pit crew for Blood Racing No. 7 at Oxford Plains Speedway.

He married the former Brenda C. Whittemore on April 14, 1973.

He is survived by his wife of North Waterford; one son, Dustin, and his fiance, Jessy Gates, of North Waterford; his mother, Kathleen McAllister, of North Waterford; a brother, John Winfield, and sister-in-law, Mary, of North Waterford; a nephew, Kyle, and a niece, Kacey, both of North Waterford, his mother-in-law, Joanne L. Whittemore, of South Paris; brother-in-law, Bradley Whittemore, and his wife, Martha, two nieces Claire and Sherry all of North Waterford.

Funeral services were held at on Wednesday, February 10, at the North Waterford Congregational Church with Rev. Janice Wilcox officiating. Interment will be in the Woodlawn cemetery in North Waterford.

In lieu of flowers, donations in D.C's memory may be sent to the Waterford Fire Association, c/o Andrea Grover, RR#l, Box 2220 North Waterford, Maine 04267.

Weston-Chandler Funeral Home , Norway was in charge of arrangements.

John T. McCaffrey
1998-11-12

RUMFORD John T. McCaffrey, 70, died unexpectedly Tuesday, November 3, 1998, at the Rumford Community Hospital. He resided on Granite Street, Mexico and was a lifelong resident of the area.

He was born in Rumford on March 3, 1928, the son of Edward and Mary (Frazier) McCaffrey, had attended Mexico schools, and was a veteran having served with the US Army.

Mr. McCaffrey was a pipe fitter at Boise Cascade Paper Company in Rumford for over 34 years until retirement in 1992. He was a member of Napoleon Ouelette Post #24, American Legion; as a musician, he was locally well known for playing his 12 string guitar and played with the Country Men Band; he was a member of the United Biker's of Maine;a member of the United States Parachute Association and the Skydivers Over Sixty Club; and member of Boise Cascade Paper Company's 25 Year Club.

He was married in Mexico, Maine on September 19, 1987, to Juliet `Jett' Libby of Mexico, who survives. Other survivors include a son, Harley and his wife Cindy McCaffrey; three daughters, Mrs. Donna Adams, Mrs. Bobbie Miller, and Miss Elizabeth McCaffrey, all of Mexico; a brother Gene and wife Tillie McCaffrey of Old Town; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

At his request there were no calling hours, but friends were invited to attend a memorial service on Sunday, November 8 at 3 p.m. at the Mexico Congregational Church in Mexico, with Reverend Ronald Ashworth officiating. Interment was in Gracelawn Memorial Park cemetery in Auburn. Those who desire, please contribute to the United Bikers of Maine, Inc., P.O. Box 2629, Augusta, Maine 04338 in his memory. Arrangements were under the care of Meader and Son Funeral Home, Rumford.

Wallace F. McDaniels
1999-03-25

NORWAY - Wallace F. McDaniels, 79, of Waterford died Sunday, March 21, 1999 at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

He was born in Norway on May 18, 1919, the son of William H. and Georgie Frost McDaniels.

He attended Norway and Temple schools.

As a young man he worked on his fathers farm and drove school bus before entering the United States Army on November 16, 1942. He served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Belgium, France, Southern France, and Germany. He was at Anzo beachhead from January to May. He was discharged from the service in October of 1945.

Upon his return home he lived in the Waterford area all his life. Mr. McDaniels worked for many years for Hamlin Oil.He loved and cared for his family and he loved working in his big garden and mowing the whole field with just his small lawn mower.

He was a member of Mt. Tirem Lodge #1 32 AF&AM of Waterford of which he was a Past Master, Past Commander of the Ronald St. John Post #9328 of Harrison, Past Master of Bear Mt. Grange of Waterford.

Mr. McDaniels married M. Happy Hamlin on September 4, 1948.

He is survived by his wife of Waterford; four daughters, Joy Lee McDaniels, and companion, Robert MacKerron, of Harrison, Betsy A. Hodges and husband, Terry, of Panama City, FL, Mary D. Briggs and husband, Thomas, of Waterford, and Gale E. McDaniels and companion, Roland Whitman, of North Norway; two sons, William A., and companion, Lori Watt of Waterford, and David W. and wife, Joelle, of Norway; 11 grandchildren, Erin Lynn Leathers and husband, Greg, Julia Briggs, Melissa McDaniels, Michael McDaniels, William Hodges, Emily Dennison, Seth Briggs, Nicholas McDaniels, Lucas McDaniels, Sierrs McDaniels, and Kirsten McDaniels, and one greatgrandchild, Victoria Happy Leathers; two sisters, Arline Perr,y of Norway, and Priscilla M. Crosby of Norway.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at the Congregational Church in South Waterford with the Rev. Kenneth Carstens officiating.

There will be no visitation. Masonic services wil be provided by Mt. Tirem Lodge #1 32 preceding the funeral service.

Donations in Mr. McDaniels' memory may be sent to either Mt. Tirem Lodge or to the Stoneham Rescue. Arrangements are under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home 230 Main St. Norway.
