Mr. Linwood C. Mace' Machia
2000-02-10

TOGUS - Linwood C. Mace Machia, 75, of Vernon Street, Bethel, died Sunday evening at the V.A. Hospital, Togus.

Mr. Machia was born in Bethel, March 28, 1924, the son of the late Napoleon C. and Florence M. Machia, attended Bethel schools, and was a lifelong resident of the community.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the European theaters of Central Europe and the Rhineland, as a Pvt., with the U.S. Army, being discharged on Dec. 19, 1954.

On July 4, 1947, he married Geraldine Cole, who predeceased him on January 9, 1990. He later married Lillian Cash Sowersby, on October 2, 1994 and she survives him.

Mace is probably best remembered as being associated with Pete Chapin, at his Mechanic Street service station for many years.

A member of the Bethel Alliance church, he also held membership in the Mundt-Allen, American Legion Post of Bethel, the Ronald St. John V.F.W. Post of Harrison and the Bethel Senior Citizens.

Besides his wife of over five years, he is survived by two daughters, Bonia Clough of Bethel and Cheryl Willey of Stow; a sister, Dorothy Swan of Canton; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a step son; three step grandchildren; eight step great great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were held at the Greenleaf Funeral Home, Bethel, on Tuesday. Funeral services were held at the Bethel Alliance Church, Bethel, on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Interment will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, West Bethel, in the spring.

Friends who wish may make memorial donations in his memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME, 04011.

Mrs. Phyllis McAlister Macisso
2000-03-09

LUTZ, FL - Phyllis McAlister Macisso of Lutz, FL, died February 25, after a short illness of kidney failure.

She was born in Norway, February 1, 1922, the daughter of Guy and Minnie Pratt McAlister.

She attended schools in Norway and was married to Pasquale Macisso of Portland and lived in Portland and Scarborough many years, owning Pat's Variety Store and Pat's Ceramics. After retiring to Florida, her husband Pasquale passed away.

Mrs. Macisso always enjoyed knitting and crocheting and ceramics. Her cats and dog were a big joy for her.

Survivors include three sisters, Elizabeth Scott of Oxford, Dorothy Packard of Norway, and Irene Parenteau of West Warwick, RI; four brothers, Will D. McAlister of Oxford, Robert L. McAlister of West Paris, Guy P. McAlister Jr. of South Paris, and Richard McAlister of Woonsocket, RI; many nieces, nephews, and cousins and her loyal friend and companion, Howard Hart of Lutz.

She was predeceased by her parents.

James Maxwell
2000-01-14

James F. Maxwell, 79, died last Friday at Coastal Manor in Yarmouth.

He was born in Gray, the son of George and Virgie Morrill Maxwell, and attended local schools. He retired in 1969, after working for 24 years as Assistant Superintendent of the State Game Farm in Gray, then starting and operating his own business, J. F. Maxwell Trucking, Inc.

Mr. Maxwell was a very active Mason. He had been Past Master of Cumberland Lodge #12; Past High Priest of Boaz Royal Arch Chapter #72; Past Illustrious Master of Dunlap Council Royal and Select Masters #8; Past Commander, Lewiston Commander Knights Templar #6; Scottish Rite Bodies-Valley of the Androscoggin, Maine Consistory 32nd Degree, Maine Council, Order of High Priesthood, Maine Council Thrice Illustrious Masters, Past Officers Association #1 of Maine, Pine Tree #65 Knights of the York Cross of Honor, Past Officers' Association of Maine, Eusebius Conclave #3 Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine, Kora Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Golden Sheaf Chapter #114, Order of the Eastern Star, Past Grand Master of Grand Commandery of Maine.

He was predeceased by his wife, F. Irene Maxwell, who died in 1981, a brother, Dale Maxwell, and a stepson, Neal Lavallee.

He is survived by a daughter, Patricia Merrill, of Yarmouth; four sisters, Edra Wilkinson, Emily Hall and Beverly Prince, all of Gray, and Sandra Strout, of Poland; and longtime friend Alta Foster, also of Gray; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held on Monday at the First Congregational Church of Gray, with Pastor Douglas Hedstrom officiating. Burial will be in the Spring. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Assosciation Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101.

Mr. Cornelius J. Merrill
2000-01-06

BETHEL- Cornelius J. (Neil) Merrill, 69, died Friday, December 31, 1999 at his home in Bethel with his family at his side, following a long courageous battle against lung cancer.

He was born in Manchester N.H. on September 21, 1930, the son of Wallace and Nora (Haley) Merrill.

He was educated in Bethel schools. Mr. Merrill held a Master Electrician license and a Journeyman's Oil Burner license.

He married the former Alberta Merrill on March 11, 1953.

Mr. Merrill was a member of the 302nd M.P. Battalion Reserve unit at Fort Williams, Portland, and a member of the Bethel Fire Department for many years.

He also served on many town committees, including the Public Saftey and Facilities Committees.

He retired from Comsat Corporation in October 1990.

Neil and Alberta received the Henry Hastings Award in May of 1999 for community service, given by the Bethel Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Merrill enjoyed traveling, snowmobiling and puttering in his garage.

He is survived by his wife, Alberta Merrill, of Bethel; a son, Greg, and daughter-in-law, Sue; three granddaughters, Elizabeth of Bethel and Karissa and Kianna of Augusta, Georgia and two brothers, Charles and Ralph Merrill of Bethel.

He was predeceased by two infant sons and a twin sister, Cornelia, who died in 1988.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, January 3, 2000, at Our Lady of the Snows in Bethel. Visiting hours were held Sunday afternoon at the Greenleaf Funeral Home, Bethel. Burial will be at the Pine Grove cemetery in West Bethel.

Edwin Donald Merry

Edwin Donald Merry died February 18 in Damariscotta. born September 18, 1904, in South Newcastle, he was the second of three children born to Byron Lynch and Addie (Tibbetts) Merry. Ancestors on both sides were sea captains, some lost at sea. He was raised with his brother and sister on the ancestral Tidewater Farm.

He attended the one-room Beach Hill schoolhouse from 1910 to 1918. In 1922, he graduated from Lincoln Academy. He attended Norwich University for one year and graduated from Colby College in 1929 with a BA in History. Thirty years later he received his masters degree in English from Trinity College in Connecticut.

His 43-year teaching career began in North Newcastle's one-room schoolhouse (1925-1926). He then taught in Woodland, Me. and Paxton, Mass. For 21 years he taught at Torrington High School in Connecticut (1931-1952). For the next five years he was an editor and feature writer for the Wesleyan University Press in Middletown, Conn., and from 1957 to 1962 taught high school in Glastonbury, Conn. His last position, from 1963-65 was a Master at Cheshire Academy. Retiring to a new home built on his parents' farm in South Newcastle, he remained active in education, teaching continuing education classes in English literature and poetry for the University of Maine until 1968.

Throughout his career he did freelance writing and also wrote poetry. He was acclaimed by Maine's literary elite and authored several books and many articles for periodicals.

He was an avid, award-winning photographer. He was also a flier, who owned his own plane and had served as a ground instructor for the Civil Air Patrol during World War II.

He played and coached tennis and also enjoyed fishing, hunting, motorcycling, boating, and gardening.

He was a Deacon of the Edgecomb Congregational Church. Survivors include his wife Alice, his daughter Ann Merry Yarney of South Newcastle, a sister Helen Merry of Newcastle, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a grandson.

Services will be held on Friday, February 25, at 11 a.m. at the Edgecomb Congregational Church. He will be buried at the family homestead cemetery, adjacent to his home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edgecomb Congregation Church in his memory.

M. June Miles
2000-03-09

M. June Miles, 72, of Wiscasset, formerly of Old Town, died Sunday, March 5 at her home after a long illness.

Born in Old Town on June 14, 1927, she was the daughter of Adeline and Elvin Thompson.

On September 15, 1947 she married Roger V. Miles. She was employed by Merrill Trust Bank in Old Town for several years and later for the University of Maine in the accounting department. In December of 1995 she moved to Wiscasset.

Mrs. Miles was a member of the Woolwich Wiscasset Baptist Church in Woolwich. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and also being at Ocean Point in East Boothbay.

Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Roger V. Miles Sr. of Wiscasset; a daughter, Victoria and her husband Arnold Bradeen of Windham; a son, Michael and his wife Annette of Westport Island; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Elaine Frost of Bass Harbor; two brothers, Harold Thompson of Old Town and Gerald Thompson of Glenburn; several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.

In 1995 she was predeceased by her oldest son, Roger V. Miles Jr. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 11 at the Woolwich Wiscasset Baptist Church. After the celebration, there will be a gathering of family and friends at the church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Wiscasset in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 210 Main Street, Suite 6, Westbrook, ME 04092.

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

M. June Miles

Committal Service A Committal Service for M. June Miles, 72, of Wiscasset, who died on Friday, March 5, will be held at noon on Saturday, May 13 in Greenlawn cemetery n Wiscasset. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street in Wiscasset.

Marcella S. Mitchell
2000-02-10

Marcella S. Mitchell, 94, of Boothbay, died Wednesday, February 2 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. born June 26, 1905 in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of Harry and Emma North Smith. She grew up on Nantucket Island and graduated from high school there. She was a graduate of Bridgewater Normal School. While at Bridgewater she was the accompanist with the choir.

Mrs. Mitchell managed Girls Clubs in Bennington, Vt., and Greenfield, Mass. until she married Albert Mitchell. She was a homemaker who volunteered with the Girl Scouts and the PTA. She was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Grayling, Michigan, and also of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed traveling, playing the organ, reading, and playing bridge. In 1990 she and her husband moved to Boothbay from Grayling.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Albert R. Mitchell of Boothbay; one daughter, Marcella and her husband, Foster Shibles of Harrison and Boothbay; three grandsons; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Andrews Hospital, 3 St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, or to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service Building Fund, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Mrs. Madeline H. Sanborn
2000-02-10

BRIDGTON - Madeline H. Sanborn, 83, of Pleasant Street, Fryeburg, died February 2, at Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Brownfield, the daughter of Ernest and Erla Bennett Hill and was educated in Brownfield and graduated from Fryeburg Academy, class of 1935.

Mrs. Sanborn lived in Fryeburg most of her life and worked for the old Chaffee Box Shop, Hall & Smith Lumber Mill, Northland Shoe Company, and Jeff's Cabinets.

She was a member and past president and a Gold Star Mother of the Fryeburg-Lovell VFW Auxiliary.

She enjoyed knitting, making candy and fudge, and decorating cakes.

Her husband, Raymond L. Sanborn, died in 1988.

She is survived by two sons, David C. Tripp of Greenwood and Ronald (Butch) Sanborn of Conway, NH; one stepson, James (Bill) Sanborn of Denmark; one sister, Ernestine Walker of Brownfield; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son Milton R. Tripp Jr., a daughter Martha Tripp Leach, a step-son Frances Sanborn, a sister Fannie McAllister, and a brother James Hill.

A memorial service was held on Sunday at the Fryeburg-Lovell VFW Hall in Lovell with the Reverend Violet Eastman officiating.

Donations may be made to the Fryeburg Rescue, P.O. Box 177, Fryeburg, ME 04037.

Arrangements were by Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.
