Ruth Burdick
Ruth Breaden Burdick, 92, a resident of Gray and Seaside Nursing Home, died February 29, 2004 at the Maine Medical Center.

She was born on March 10, 1911, in Providence, RI, a daughter of George and Aleda (Pierson) Breaden.

She graduated from East Providence High School and the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School. She worked for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad as a secretary in the Providence and Boston offices before her marriage to Orrin R. Burdick in 1944.

Ruth and Orrin worked together as caretakers and managers for estates in Randolph, VT, and York Harbor for over twenty years before retiring and moving to Gray.

Mrs. Burdick's husband died in 1998.

She was a former member of the Gray Senior Citizens and Friends of the Gray Public Library. Ruth enjoyed knitting, gardening, crossword puzzles, trips to the coast and yard sales.

She will be fondly remembered by her friends, neighbors and the staff at Seaside Nursing Home for her independent spirit and sense of humor.

She is survived by one son, Douglas, of Gray.

A memorial graveside service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Activities Fund, Seaside Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, 850 Baxter Boulevard, Portland, ME 04103, or the Gray Public Library, 5 Hancock Street, Gray, ME 04039.

Ruth B. Clark
Ruth B. Clark, 82, of West Gray Road, died July 4, 2000 at a Portland hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Gray, she was a daughter of Clifford and Myra Frank Barton. She attended local schools, graduating from Pennell Institute as valedictorian of her class in 1935. She received a degree in home economics from the University of Maine in 1939.

She taught home economics in Machias, where she met her husband, Robert Clark. They were married in 1942. From 1942 to 1946 she taught at Windham High School. She also substituted in schools in Gray and Windham for many years.

Mrs. Clark was an accomplished pianist and organist. Her other interests include sewing, quilting, reading and her cats. She was a contributor to the publication, Images of America: Gray, ME.

She was a member of the Gray Cooperative Extension Group, serving as chairperson for several years, and was also a member and vice president of the Advisory Council of the Cumberland County Extension.

She was a special friend and neighbor of the family of Kevin and Cindy Trinward. Her husband of 57 years, Robert Clark, died in 1999, and a grandson, Adam Clark, died in 1988.

Surviving are a son, James Clark of New Gloucester; two daughters, Joan Fickett of Gorham and Judith Hochstetler of Groveland, Mass; a brother, Erwin Barton of Westbrook; and three grandchildren, Brent Clark, Laurie Hochstetler and Andrew Hochstetler.

Memorial donations may be made to the Maine Children's Cancer Fund, 100 Rt. 1, Scarborough, ME 04074.

Russell Liscomb
On July 25, 2002, Russell Liscomb, formerly of Gray, a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and pilot died suddenly of complications due to old age, at his home in Gorham.

Born in 1915 in Winchester, Mass., son of Charles F. and Mabel S. Liscomb. Graduate of Newton, Mass., High School and University of Omaha, Neb.

In 1940, he volunteered for military service, serving at Fort Devens before entering flight training. Commissioned in January of 1943, Mr. Liscomb was co-pilot on a B-24 and flew to England to join the 93rd Bomb Group.

For his service during World War II, Russell Liscomb's awards include an Air Medal and a Distinguished Flying Cross.

Second Lieutenant Liscomb returned stateside for retraining in late 1946. Recalled in 1951, he went to Japan and worked at air traffic control until 1953 when he was reassigned to Air Defense Command in Cape Cod. Later he was posted to Taiwan, then to Newburg, New York, Colorado Springs, Ottawa, Canada, and Topsham, Maine. He eventually settled down in nearby Gray.

After retiring, Mr. Liscomb dedicated almost ten years of service working for the State of Maine. A member of the American Legion Gray Post #86 for more than 33 years, Mr. Liscomb was also a member of the Retired Officers Association, 70Plus Ski club and B-24 club.

Survivors include his son, William Parker Liscomb; and two grandchildren Megan and Russell of San Marcos, CA; loving companion Priscilla Cotes of Gray and devoted friends John and Cheryl Welch and other friends.

Memorial service on Sunday, August 18, at 2:00 P.M., at First Congregational Church, Gray. Contributions may be made to First Church Congregational Church, PO Box 155, Gray, ME 04039 or to the American Legion, PO Box 428, Gray, ME 04039.

Russell L. Searles
1999-09-03
Russell L. Searles, 49, died Wednesday at a Portland Hospital.

Mr. Searles was born in Lewiston April 3, 1950, the son of Louis R. and Margaret Wing Searles, Sr., and was educated at New Gloucester and Gray-New Gloucester schools.

Mr. Searles was a truck driver for over twenty years before illness forced him to retire. He worked 13 years at Pioneer Plastic, Mitchell Trucking, Transcoastal Corporation and Searles Brothers Excavation. He was an avid Cribbage player, enjoyed crosswords, collecting vintage vehicles and fishing.

Surviving are his mother, Margaret V. Searles of New Gloucester; two daughters, Heather Searles, of Somerville, MA, and Melissa Searles, of Lewiston; and two brothers, Louis and Wayne Searles, both of New Gloucester. He was blessed with the companionship of Jacqueline Lemm, of Poland Spring. .

Memorial donations may be made to The American Lung Association, 122 State Street, Augusta, Maine 04330.

Roger Sabin
Roger William Sabin, 50, of Lawrence Road in Gray, died at Mercy Hospital on January 22, 2004.

He was born in Portland on February 20, 1953, son of Harold and Grace Sabin.

Roger's early education took place in the Windham schools. He graduated from Deering High School in Class of 1970, and attended the University of Southern Maine.

Throughout his life, Roger was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees and Giants. In addition to being an avid sports fan, he enjoyed playing softball, volleyball and golf, on teams made up of his friends.

Many of Roger's fondest hours were spent at the Pizza Villa, his place of employment for 25 years.

Well-known for his quickness, breadth of knowledge and wit, he honed his gift for repartee on his customers, most of whom became friends of long standing.

In his final years, after being stricken with crippling neuropathy, he was humbled by the magnanimous caring and generosity bestowed upon him by his loved ones.'Roger is survived by his wife, Susan; his mother, Grace Sabin, of Westbrook,; and a sister, Becky Carr, of Standish.

He was predeceased by his father and by a brother, Quentin "Chip" Sabin.

Friends joined the family in a memorial remembrance of his life last Saturday at Saint Ann's Episcopal Church,Windham.

Roger P. Fernald
WINDHAM - Roger P. Fernald, 55, of Smith Road, died at Maine Medical Center on August 3, 2003, following a brief illness. He was born in Westbrook, a son of Charles W., Jr. and Geneva S. (Proulx) Fernald. He attended Windham schools, and was a graduate of Windham High School.

He worked for several years for Arkie Rogers of Windham, then worked 20 years for his father's business, C.W. Fernald, Inc. Building Contractor, also of Windham. He then started his own business, Roger Fernald Construction, and was also a subcontractor for Home Town Home Improvements of Saco.

He enjoyed his Harley-Davidson and was a member of the United Bikers of Maine. He enjoyed his work and his perennial gardens. He also raised Springer Spaniels and showed them. He is survived by his wife, Alice Powell Fernald of Windham; his father, Charles Fernald, Jr., of Naples; sons, Daryl S. Fernald of Bridgton, Kevin L. Fernald of Standish; stepsons, Michael S. Connor and Christopher J. Connor both of Windham; a special niece, Lydia Powell of Portland; a brother, Richard L. Fernald of Casco; sisters, Pauline M. Leland of Windham, Donna L. Martin of Windham, Shirley M. Smith of Casco, Susan A. Shaw of Raymond; and six grandchildren.

There will be no visiting hours, A memorial service was held at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham.

Rodney W. Lodge
Rodney W. Lodge, 67, of Gray, died January 10, 2001 at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA.

Mr. Lodge was born in Eastport, a son of Byron and Lena Peters Lodge. He graduated from Shead High School.

After his discharge from the Navy, in which he served as a corpsman during the Korean War, Mr. Lodge married and started a family. He earned a degree from Bryant College, taking night classes.

He was a marketing representative for the Shell Oil Company and later for Getty Petroleum. He retired in 1990, and lived in Saco for many years before moving to Gray.

He is survived by three sons, Mark D. and Brad R., both of Lyman, and Kirk D., of Alfred, and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in North Windham.
