Ruth Y. McKee
2000-07-13

Born in Baileyville (Woodland), she was the only child of John and Alice Carle Yeaton She grew up in Waterville and graduated from Colby College in 1937.

Mrs. McKee worked at Ellis Memorial Settlement House in Boston as a social worker until she married Jack McKee.

In the 1970s, she moved back to Maine and became active in the community. She was the longest serving board member of the Boothbay Region Land Trust (1982-1994 and 1995-1999) and served on or chaired the Education and Nominating Committees during her tenure on the board. As one of the early members of the board, she helped lay the ground work for its success. Mrs. McKee was dedicated to developing a strong board with a broad representation and worked hard every year to bring in just the right people. She was very dedicated to land preservation and believed youth were the future of land trust. She worked, and at times fought, to support scholarships and to involve students in land trust activities. She was particularly proud when her grandson, Dylan Boyd, developed the landscaping plan for the Mill Pond Overlook as his Eagle Scout project. As a member of the fund-raising committee, she ran the "full to capacity" BRLT annual boat trip for ten years and was instrumental in the BRLT's very successful art auctions. Mrs. McKee added history and consistency to the land trust as it grew. One of her favorite quotes was, "the earth is the face of God, to live gladly in its presence and die without fear or grief, knowing it survives us," by poet Robinson Jeffers. She was part of the backbone, the heart of land trust and her departure is a tremendous loss to those who share the work she loved.

In 1971, as President of the Ocean Point Colony Trust, she led the effort to acquire an eight-acre parcel of land, now known as the Ocean Point Memorial Land. She was also involved in the Boothbay Region Historical Society, the Friends of the Library Used Book Store and the St. Andrews Hospital Auxiliary.

Mrs. McKee believed strongly in giving to different organizations, whether with money or with time, and felt that we can all make a difference in the world by doing so.

Survivors include two sons, Richard C. and his wife Linda McKee of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Douglas E. and his wife Patsy McKee of Mission Viejo, Calif.; one daughter, Katherine (Kitty), and her husband Bob Boyd of Boothbay Harbor; two grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to the Boothbay Region Land Trust or to any charity of choice.
