Annie J. Marr

Annie Josephine Marr, 63, of Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, October 26 at the Country Manor in Coopers Mills.

Born in Bath on October 21, 1937, she was the daughter of Leon and Lillian Ryder Swett. She grew up in Southport and attended school here.

Mrs. Marr was employed for over 15 years by the Tugboat Inn. She loved animals, especially her cats Minnie and Sierra, whom she called "her babies." She liked to bake and visit with friends and family.

Survivors include one daughter, Sybil A. Frey of Forest, Virginia; three grandsons, Sumner Swett of Boothbay Harbor, Mason J. Frey of Forest, Va. and Leon J. Swett of Augusta; two sisters, Ida Haas of Randolph, Vt. and Agnes Morin of Perham; three brothers, David Swett of Southport, John Swett of Mystic, Conn. and Frank Swett of Alabama.

Visiting hours were held on Monday, October 30 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Oceanview cemetery at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 2 with Rev. Glen West officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, Inc., 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011-2194.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Annie Josephine Marr

Annie Josephine Marr, 63, died on Thurs., Oct. 26 at the County Manor in Coopers Mills. She was born in Bath on Oct. 21, 1937, the daughter of Leon and Lillian Ryder Swett. She grew up in Southport and attended school here.

She was employed for over fifteen years by the Tugboat Inn. She loved animals - especially her cats Minnie and Sierra whom whe called “her babies.” She liked to bake and visit with friends and family. Her real love was people.

She is survived by daughter, Sybil A. Frey of Forest, Va.; grandsons Sumner Swett of Boothbay Harbor, Mason J. Frey of Forest, Va., Leon J. Swett of Augusta; sisters: Ida Haas of Randolph, Vt. Donald Robert Mason
2000-11-23

Donald Robert Manson, 74, Alna, formerly of Newburyport Mass., died November 19, in Sandown, N.H.

He was the husband of Anne Marie (Chaisson) Manson.

Born in Newburyport, Mass., Oct. 14, 1926, the son of Clarence and Ethel (Schremph) Manson. He attended Newburyport schools graduating from Newburyport High in 1944.

Mr. Manson was a Navy Veteran of WW II having served in the So. Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion - Post 54, Wiscasset, Past member Lincoln County voiture #763 40/8.

He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Newburyport, the Newburyport Volunteer Fire Department and the Old Newbury Handtub Association.

Mr. Manson was well known in Newburyport having owned and operated Manson’s Garage on Merrimac Street for 30 years.

After retiring and moving to Maine, he raised cattle and enjoyed working in his large vegetable gardens. his hobbies included cooking, hunting, boating, fishing and carpentry.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Anne Marie (Chaisson) Manson; son, Donald R. Manson Jr. and wife Laura of Amesbury; Mass., daughter, Deborah A. Manson of Salisbury, Mass., daughter Dr. Marie A. Somers and husband Robert of Sandown, NH; daughter Patricia I. Manson of Mashpee; Mass., daughter Rebecca M. Brown and husband Buddy of Weare, NH; daughter Jayne D. Irving and husband Joel of East Falmouth, Mass., twenty grandchildren; one great-grandson; sisters, Bertha M. Groves of Ambler, Penn., and Judy Decie of Amesbury, Mass. He was the borther of the late Alftred E. Manson and Arthur C. Manson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Miles Home Health/Hospice, RR2, Box 4500, Damariscotta, 04543.

Funeral services at 11 a.m. in the St. Louis de Gonzague Church, Federal Street, Newburyport, Mass. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newburyport, Mass.

Calling hours Tues., from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Twomey LeBlanc Funeral Home, 193 High Street, Newburyport, Mass.

Robert A. McKown
2000-11-09

Robert Alvah McKown, 69, of East Boothbay, died Thursday, November 2, while deer hunting in the town of Newcastle.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on September 18, 1931, he was the son of Frederic C. and Hazel D. McKown. In 1951 he graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School.

Mr. McKown was in the U.S. Navy for four years and then entered the U.S. Air Force from which he retired.

In 1957, he married Marjorie E. Alley.

Mr. McKown enjoyed hunting, fishing, bird watching and spending time at the family camp down east. He was a lifetime member of the Bayview Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; one daughter, Julie Ann of Leeds; two brothers, George McKown of Thomaston and David McKown of East Boothbay; five sisters, Barbara Dewey of Hemet, California, Martha McKown of East Boothbay, Laurie Morey of Cushing, Joyce Graffam of Thomaston, and Margie Yocum of Boothbay Harbor.

There will be no funeral service. Donations in his memory may be made to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, 11 Howard Street, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

A. Douglas McLoon
2000-11-02

Arthur Douglas McLoon, 71, of Nobleboro, died unexpectedly on Friday, October 27 while with his annual hunting group in Cherryfield.

A son of Charles and Catherine (McCaughey), he was born August 29, 1929 in Damariscotta. He attended local schools and was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.

For nearly 30 years, Mr. McLoon worked as a telephone contractor, first for Nash Phone Co., which later became GTE and Contel, working out of the Damariscotta offices, as well as throughout central Lincoln County.

He was a longtime member of the Damariscotta-Newcastle Lions Club, serving in several capacities. He was also a member of the Wells-Hussey Post of the American Legion, Damariscotta. He had gone hunting with the same group, every fall, for nearly 40 years, serving as camp cook for much of the time.

Survivors include one daughter, Jody McLoon of Damariscotta; a son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Julie McLoon of Boothbay Harbor; a brother, George of Damariscotta; three sisters, Claire Horie of Pittsburgh, Penn., Kathryn Crowley of Westbrook and Ruth House of Damariscotta; and one granddaughter, Jacklyn McLoon of Boothbay Harbor.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 3 at the Chapel of the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street in Damariscotta. Pastor Rick Newell will officiate. He will be laid to rest immediately following at the Bethlehem cemetery in Damariscotta.

If desired, donations may be made to the Wells-Hussey Post, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Edgar E. Merrill
2000-11-09

SOUTH PARIS - Edgar E. Merrill, 81, of South Waterford, died October 31, 2000 at the Maine Veterans' Home.

He was born in Bethel on October 29, 1919,the son of Lewis V. and Winifred Maxim Merrill. He graduated from Bridgton Academy and had been employed by A.C. Lawrence Leather Co. in South Paris and Morse Orchards in Waterford and worked as a woodsman. He had been a union carpenter, a millwright and a farmer.

He faithfully served his country during WWII in Europe.

He was a member of the Ronald G. St. John V.F.W. Post #9328 of Harrison and the Norway-Paris Fish & Game Club.

He married Margaret Bell on January 8, 1940. He enjoyed spending time with his family and reading.

He is survived by seven sons, Robert L. and his wife Beth of Parachute, CO, Richard E. and his wife Cynthia of Concord, NH, Edward C. and his wife Sharon of Lee Center, NY, Russell W. and his wife Martha of Harrison, Raymond W. and his wife Dorene of Waterford, William W. and his wife Penny of South Paris and James C. and his wife Sharon of Waterford; seven daughters, Elizabeth and her husband Donald Ouellette of Eastham, MA, Jane and her husband Robert Jones of Norway, Shirley Merrill of Waterford, Mary Delamater of Oxford, Gail Merrill of Waterford, Karen and her husband Herbert Hill of Norway, and Marcia and her husband John Butters of Waterford; one sister, Marguerite Whitney of Port Clyde; 33 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, who died August 21, 1997; one brother, Leslie Merrill and one sister, Verna Packard.

Graveside services were held on Friday, November 3, 2000 at Elm Vale cemetery in South Waterford.

Dorothy Stiff Messer
2000-11-30

Dorothy Stiff Messer, 79, Newcastle, died Nov. 28 at Miles Memorial Hospital.

She was born January 17, 1921 in Glen Ridge, N.J. the daughter of S. Bertram Stiff and Lily Dugard Stiff. She graduated with academic distinction from Parsons School of Design.

For many years she was employed by Schering-Plough Corporation, and furthered her academic career by graduating from Upsala College with honors.

A resident of Newcastle following her retirement, she split her time between pursuing her art and working in the Medical Records She was predeceased by her husband, Robert G. Messer, and her daughter, Mary Dugard Henderson.

She is survived by a sister and brother and by her son, William Bruce Johnson, and two grandchildren.

Memorial service 11 a.m. Sat., Dec. 2 at Strong’s Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

Dorothy Garcelon Daicey Mitchell
2000-11-30

Dorothy Garcelon Daicey Mitchell 92, Pemaquid Beach, died peacefully Nov. 24 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta in the skilled care unit where she had been for five weeks.

She was born in Auburn on July 18, 1908, the only child of Harriette Mabel Garcelon and Elmer Eugene Daicey. The family moved to South Bend, Ind., and she graduated from local schools. She earned her BA degree at Lawrence University, Appleton, Wis. class of 1930, where she was secretary of her class and vice president of Zeta Chapter, Beta Phi Alpha sorority.

Upon graduation, she headed east where a job awaited her at Western Electric. She later did feature advertising for Bambergers. In 1933, she married Joseph Harold “Terry” Mitchell. They lived in New Jersey before moving to Darien, Conn. in 1954. Summers were spent in Maine at Pemaquid Beach where they retired in 1970.

At the time of her death, she was a 73-year member of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Mayflower Society in Michigan. Other memberships she held included Fortnightly Club, Olde Bristol Garden Club, AAUW, Retired Officers Wives Club and Lincoln County Historical Society.

Her only child, Susie (Mrs. Claude C. Tukey), her son-in-law, Claude and a granddaughter, Jessica, all of Pemaquid, survive her. Her husband of 43 years and a grandson, Jonathan Mitchell Tukey, predeceased her.

Service, Mon., Dec. 4, 1 p.m. at the Maine Veterans cemetery Chapel in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Bristol First Responders, c/o Jeri Pendleton, New Harbor. 04554.

Dorothy L. Morton
2000-11-09

Dorothy Lewis Morton, 82, died Sunday, October 29 at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida.

Born in Boothbay, she was the daughter of Guy and Pretoria McComiskey Lewis. Her husband of 64 years, Ralph, died in 1998.

Mr. and Mrs. Morton owned and operated the Hide-A-Way Coffee Shop and Guest House in Boothbay Harbor. She managed the Oak Grove Hotel Coffee Shop in Boothbay Harbor, and worked many years in the dining room of the P.G.A. Country Club in Dunedin, Florida.

She and her husband also owned and operated the Hay Loft Antique Shop, Doll Museum, Mini Golf and Driving Range in Boothbay.

Survivors include a son, Ralph Morton Jr. of South Portland and Belleair Beach, Florida; three grandsons; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Angelyn Medary of Brunswick; two brothers, Barry Lewis of Brunswick and Guy Lewis of Topsham; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial after cremation will be at Riverside cemetery in Yarmouth, Maine.

Willard Muise
2000-11-09

Willard "Bill" Muise, 79, of Boothbay Harbor, died Tuesday, November 2 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born January 19, 1921 in Rockland, he was the son of Joseph and Annie Seavey Muise.

On November 29, 1941, he married Gertrude Warren and together they made their home in Boothbay Harbor raising their two children.

During World War II, Mr. Muise served in the Navy for three years in the South Pacific. After the war he worked for the local shipyards, retiring from Robinhood Marine Center in the early 1980s after 23 years of employment.

He was an avid reader who also enjoyed flying kites and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brother, Ronald Muise, and a sister, Madeline Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Muise of Boothbay Harbor; two daughters, Linda and her husband Garvin Golding of Portland, and Barbara and her husband Allan Walton of Boothbay; three sisters, Adele and her husband Lincoln Bailey of Enfield, Conn., Prudence and her husband Paul Bagdiklan Jr. of East Windsor, Conn., and Ann L. Muise of Earlysville, Va.; grandchildren, Valery Golden, Marcus and his wife Lachelle, Jacob Walton and Carly Walton; two-great-grandchildren, Maxwell Marschhausen and Riley Golden; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service was held Sunday, November 5 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. The Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin officiated.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Muise's memory to DMR Burnt Island, c/o Elaine Jones, P.O. Box 8, West Boothbay Harbor, ME 04575.
