Dr. Marshall, the youngest of eight children born to George and Margaret Taylor Marshall was born on January 13, 1909 in Portland. He grew up on Munjoy Hill, and recently became interested in the St. Lawrence Church, which through a small donation, he enlivened the restoration project. He attended Portland public schools, graduating from Portland High School in 1927. While in High school he became a member of the Demolay division of the Masonic order. In addition, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Dr. Marshall graduated from the University of Maine in 1931 with a pre-medical degree. While at the University he was a member of the Sophomore Owls and Senior Skulls. It was at the University of Maine that he first met Helene Johnson whom he married in 1936 and who predeceased him in 1995. Dr. Marshall attended Yale University School of Medicine and received his M.D. degree in 1936. Following graduation from Yale, he did his post-doctoral residency training in surgery and urology at the Strong Memorial Hospital,m an affiliate of the University of Rochester (NY) School of Medicine. Following his residency training he and his wife moved to Norfolk, Va., where he practiced urology until the outbreak of W.W. II. He served with the U.S. Army Eighth Evacuation Hospital from 1941 through 1944.

At the conclusion of the war, Dr. Marshall returned to Maine and practiced urology in Portland, at the Maine Medical Center. At a time before Medicare existed, Dr. Marshall, as did many others in the medical profession, treated his patients without charge if they were unable to pay. In addition, he never charged members of the clergy or teachers. He continued the practice of urology until his retirement in 1975. During those years of practice, he served as Chief of Urology at the Maine Medical Center. it was during this period as chief urologist that he became motivated to muster medical and political forces to start a kidney transplant program in Maine. With the support of the community and the medical staff, this programs had an enthusiastic and successful history. Dr. Marshall obtained the valuable advice from medical institutions such as the University of Virginia, Medical College of Virginia, John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and the New York Hospital (Conell University Medical College). This kidney transplant program continues as strongly as it did from the beginning and has proven to be of eminent value to the community of Portland and the state of Maine. The late Statesman, Edmund Muskie, lent his support and greatly contributed to the success of the program’s development. In recognition of his work in the development of the transplant program, Dr. Marshall was presented with the Kiwanis Club of Portland’s Distinguished Service Award in 1975.

Through Dr. Marshall’s continuing care and concern for several of his patients, he interested these individuals in contributing funds for extensive building initiatives by the Maine Medical Center. He and his first wife, Helene, were active in the Congregation of St. Alban’s Church of Cape Elizabeth, and worked diligently for the construction of the new church. Dr. Marshall was also a member of the Portland Rotary Club.

Dr. Marshall and his second wife, Margaret Risk, a native of Scotland, were married in 1996, and lived most of the year in Spain and Scotland and in New Harbor in the summer.
