Gordon Mellor
2001-05-03

Gordon Mellor, 83, of Westport, Connecticut, husband of Shirley K. Mellor, died Monday, April 23 in Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Conn.

Mr. Mellor was born on February 18, 1918 in Brighouse, Yorkshire England and was a resident of Westport for the past 47 years. He immigrated to the United States when he was two years old when his family settled in California.

An artist, illustrator, and designer, he worked in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Hartford and Westport for many ad media companies.

In 1939 he graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, Calif. After retiring from commercial art, Mr. Mellor became a very successful portrait painter.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II in the European Theater.

A former avid hunter and objects collector, it will be his sense of humor that will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Jean Adams Mellor, and one brother, Kenneth Mellor.

Survivors include one son, Mark A. Mellor and his wife Deborah of Boothbay; two daughters, Gail M. Sibley and her husband Jack, and Lynn B. Mellor, both of Fairfield, Conn.; and three grandchildren, Jes Sibley of Fairfield, Conn., and Alyssa J. Mellor and Devin K. Mellor, both of Boothbay Harbor.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 28 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church in Westport, Conn. in celebration of his life by his friends and family.

Helen N. Miller
2001-05-03

Helen N. (Nivison) Miller, 90, of Westmont, N.J. and Capitol Island died Saturday, April 28.

She was the wife of Tilford Miller, who survives her.

She is also survived by one daughter, Charlotte Gregory of Damariscotta; one sister, Margaret Chase of Little Falls, N.Y.; two grandsons, Douglas and Charles Edward Gallacher; and one great-granddaughter, Sophie Wiley Gallacher.

Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield, N.J. A private Interment will be held in Waterville, Maine. Arrangements by Holl-Murphy Funeral Home of Haddonfield, N.J.

Doris E. Miller
2001-03-22

Doris E. Miller, 88, Newcastle died quietly at her home on March 18.

She was born July 8, 1912, Wilked-Barre, Penn., daughter of Laura and Ferdinand Maier, and grew up in New York City.

Mrs. Miller married and raised her family in New York and Westport, Conn. She worked as a real estate broker from 1960 - 1983. For the past two decades she lived in Newcastle and operated a bed and breakfast.

Her husband John, died in 1975.

She is survived by three children, Darcy Boyd Austin of Pemaquid, Holly Watts of Darien, Conn., and John Miller of Newcastle and five grandchildren.

Friends may call the family at her home.

Bryson G. Milstead
2001-03-15

Bryson G. Milstead, 2, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 7 at his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Born March 18, 1998 in Brunswick, he was the son of Russell W. and Jillian S. (Mosher) Milstead.

Bryson was a happy and energetic young man who enjoyed spending his time watching Bear in the Big Blue House, playing outside, and spending time with Mom and Dad. He loved flowers and was especially fascinated with balloons. He liked watching Mom put on her make-up and he especially enjoyed playing with Dad's tools.

Survivors include his parents; maternal grandparents Ross and Terri Norton of Westport Island, and Alan and Cherie Mosher of Bath; paternal grandparents, Wayne and Phyllis Milstead of Woolwich; great-grandparents, Lillian Barnes of Mobile, Alabama and Ken and Helen Murray of Westport Island; aunts and uncles, Sherre Mosher and Jay Faulkingham, Nick Mosher, Shane and Alta Odom; three cousins, Alecia Faulkingham, Dalton Odom, and Gage Schutte; and several great-aunts and great-uncles.

At the family's request, there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 13 at the Woolwich-Wiscasset Baptist Church in Woolwich, with the Rev. Stephen Daniels officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the David E. Desmond Funeral Home in Bath. Those who wish may make contributions to the family, in care of Ross and Terri Norton, 65 Main Road, Westport Island, ME 04578.

Edwin O. Monroe
2001-02-08

Edwin O. Monroe, 79, Whitefield, a longtime heavy equipment operator, died February 1, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus, after a brief illness.

Born in Norwich, Conn. on Dec. 3, 1921, he was the son of Edwin and Ruth (Reed) Monroe.

Edwin attended school in Connecticut, and moved to this area when he was eighteen. He was married to Blossom Mabel Lowden in 1945.

He worked for Raymond Harris Construction and the Augusta Iron Works. Mr. Monroe then worked 25 years at Bridge Construction and later for A.E. Andrews for 13 years. He then worked for the Leonard Kelley Farm and Ben Pushard. Edwin worked for Roland Bragg at Nobleboro Building Movers, and for the past several year, worked with his son at Frank Monroe Construction.

Mr. Monroe loved to plow snow, and was working at the time he was taken ill, shortly before he died. he had been a skilled heavy equipment operator and welder, all of his life, operating all types of bulldozers.

His wife died on March 5, 1996. His grandson, Pfc. John Raven, USAF and his sister, Joanne Harris died previously.

Surviving are his son, Frank M. Monroe and wife Melissa of Whitefield; his two stepsons, Ernest Raven and wife Lillian of Tennessee and Dennis Raven and wife Lucille of Delta Junction, Alaska; six grandchildren, Allen, Paul, Ernie, Tammy, Tracy, and Tina Raven; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service Feb. 4, at the Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor. Rev. Branan Becknell, Pastor of Windsor Memorial Baptist Church officiated. Committal and burial Resthaven Cemetery, Windsor. If desired, the family suggests memorial gifts to the Windsor Memorial Baptist Church, Attn: Church Addition Fund, R.R. #1 Box. 1800, Windsor, Maine 04363.

Diana M. Moody
2001-03-22

Diana M. (Wadsworth) Moody, 36, Union, died, March 13, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. born in Portland on May 11, 1964, she was the daughter of Charles A. and Rose Marie (Malburg) Wadsworth. She was a 1983 graduate of Camden Rockport High School and married Laurence J. Moody. For 17 years they have resided in Union.

Diana was employed at Shop ‘n Save in Rockland for nine years as an assistant deli manager. She attended the United Methodist Church in Union and enjoyed camping with her family, cooking and shopping. Diana will always be remembered by family and friends for her ability to serve the needs of others through her unselfish and thoughtful deeds. A very devoted Christian, she was a great source of inspiration to those around her, remaining strong and never complaining during her illness.

Surviving is her husband, Laurence J. Moody of Union; her parents, Charles A. Wadsworth and his wife, Peggy of Waldoboro; her mother Rose Marie Sorvello and her husband, Amelio of Meriden, Conn.; mother and father-in-law, James and Arlene Moody of Appleton; her three children, Crista M. Moody, Kyle J. Moody, and Casey L. Moody all of Union; her maternal grandmother, Marie Malburg and paternal grandmother Daurice Wasdsworth both of Rockland; one brother, David Wadsworth and wife, Paula of Gorham; sister, Debra Benner and husband, Robert of Appleton; stepsisters, Heather Wadsworth of Waldoboro and Susan Wadsworth of N.H.; three brothers-in-law, David Moody and wife, Paula of Rockport; Wayne Moody and wife, Amy of Warren; and Kevin Moody and wife, Vicki of Appleton; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours March 17, at the Robert E. Laite Funeral Home, 9 Mountain Street, Camden. Funeral March 18, at the United Methodist Church in Union. The Rev. Michelle Grube and Rev. William Renwick co-officiated. Spring burial in LaSalle cemetery Searsmont. The family suggests memorial donations be made to Bob Gagnon Cancer Care Fund, c/o Northeast Health, 22 White Street, Rockland, 04841 or the Maine Cancer Research Foundation, P.O. Iverne G. Morton
2001-02-22

Iverne G. Morton, 75, Brunswick, died Feb. 14, at the home of her sister Theresa Gamache, who provided Ms. Morton with care while she was ill.

She was born in New Harbor, a daughter of Cyrus and Maude Chadwick Morton, attended Bristol Schools and was a 1942 graduate of Bristol High School.

For five years she was a teacher’s assistant at a private school in East Greenwich, R.I. For the next three years, Ms. Morton worked in the insurance industry as a claims adjuster for Glen Falls Insurance in Hartford, Conn.

She later moved to Miami, where she continued to work as an insurance adjuster for 17 years, five of them with AETNA.

Ms. Morton returned to Brunswick in the 1970’s and worked for the Hartford Insurance Co. in Portland until retiring in 1988.

She was a member of the 55-Plus Center, and enjoyed reading and knitting.

Surviving are her sister of Brunswick; and three brothers, Harold Morton of South Bristol, Earl Morton of Staten island, N.Y., and Roderick Morton of North Anson.

Visiting hours 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 19 at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., funeral will follow 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Ronald McLaughlin officiating. Spring burial in New Harbor Cemetery, Bristol.

Hazel M. Murray
2001-03-08

Hazel Maye Murray, age 93, died Thursday, March 1 at Endicott Manor in Dedham, Mass., following a brief illness.

Born in Grand Pre, Nova Scotia, on October 28, 1907, she was the daughter of Oscar Napier and Margaret Maye (Atwell) Main.

Her family moved to Wiscasset, Maine the following year, where she grew up, graduating from Wiscasset Academy in 1925. She graduated from business school in Boston the following year, and then took a position with Fireman's Fund Insurance Company.

In 1930 she married James Everil Murray, who predeceased her in 1980.

They initially lived in Roslindale, moving to the Riverdale Section of Dedham, where she resided in the same home since 1934. She was the office manager for the family business, The J. E. Murray Heating Oil Company, until their retirement in 1969. She was a member of the Riverdale Congregational Church in Dedham. She maintained a home in Wiscasset until 1992.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Lee Zuker of Bellevue, Wash.; two grandchildren, Hunter Lee Zuker of Seattle, Wash. and Pamela Marlene Moultray of Yakima, Wash.; two great-grandchildren, Wesley Cash McMahon and Douglas Lee McMahon both of Yakima, Wash.; her sister-in-law, Lillian Main; and nephew and niece, James and Judi Main and their children, all of Wiscasset; as well as many other nieces and nephews in the Wiscasset area.

She was predeceased by her four older brothers, Oscar, Leslie, George and Carl Main, all of the Wiscasset area.

A private family service will be held at Knollwood cemetery in Canton, Mass. on Monday, March 5, with Interment following.

Memoriams in her name may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

Irene Mucci
2001-06-22

Irene M. Mucci, 80, of Gray, died June 17 after a lengthy illness.

She was born I Westbrook, daughter of Emery J. and Alberta Labrecque.

In 1941, she married Clifford W. Mucci. They moved to Little Sebago Lake in Gray in 1969.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, Lawrence D., of Standish, Thomas R., of Scarborough, and William C., of Standish; three sisters, Jeanette Hendryx, of Iowa, Delores Bailey, of Westbrook, and Gloria Charett, of Gorham; four brothers, Albert, Romeo and Philip, all of Gorham, and Roger, of Massachusetts; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated on July 29 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Route 302, Windham.

Lynwood Merrithew
2001-07-20

Lynwood E. "Peewee" Merrithew, 81, of Mt. Hunger Shore Road, Gray, died on July 14 at a nursing home in Portland.

Mr. Merrithew was born in Houlton, a son of Angus and Edna Grant Merrithew.

He was manager of Leen's Electric, of Portland, for 30 years, and later was industrial sales manager for Rockingham Electric. He was an Army veteran of World War II; he won the Bronze Star and five battle stars.

His wife, Jeanne A. Bedard Merrithew, died in 1994. He is survived by a son, Kenneth, of Nashua, NH; two daughters, Karin Snyder, of Denver, and Kim Aldrich, of Lyman; a brother, Frederic, of West Palm Beach, FL; a sister, Mrs. Beatrice Lebeque, of Portsmouth, NH; and one grandchild.

Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
