George McAdams
2001-09-27

George McAdams, 71, of Bath died September 17, 2001 at Mid Coast Hospital.

Born April 20, 1930 in Barrington, R.I., he was the son of William and Maude (Bell) McAdams.

He lived in Riverside, R.I. and attended Riverside schools, and for several years worked in Crescent Park.

On January 26, 1953 he entered the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.

On January 28, 1969 he married Beulah Grover Dickinson and they resided in Wiscasset. In 1971 they moved to Bath. He was employed by T&R Associates for many years.

Mr. McAdam was an avid fan of wrestling, football and baseball. He also enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include three sons, Dale W. Dickinson and his fianc´e Michelle, Keith A. Dickinson, and Kenneth G. Dickinson; one daughter, Linda L. Barter and her husband Fred, all of Bath; one sister, Dorothy "Dot" and her husband Russell Brightman of Rumford, R.I.;10 grandchildren;13 great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Beaulah McAdams on March 20, 2001; one sister, Winifred Fournier; and one brother, Donald McAdams.

A funeral service was held Monday, September 24 at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home in Bath. Burial followed in Old Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

Memorial contributions may be made to The American Red Cross Disaster Fund, 524 Forest Ave, Portland, ME 04101.

Beulah J. McAdams
2001-05-10

A committal service for Beulah J. McAdams, 62, who died on March 20, 2001, will be held in Greenlawn Cemetery, Wiscasset at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2001

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home of Wiscasset.

John R. Moss
2001-09-13

John R. Moss, 77, of Glen, N.H. died Monday, September 3.

Born on June 21, 1924 in Putnam, Conn., he was the son of the late John H. and Catherine Russell Moss, of Boothbay Harbor.

Mr. Moss graduated from Moses Brown High School in Providence, R.I. in 1942. He entered the Army Air Corp., as bombardier 1st LT., ETO from 1943-1945.

He earned an AB in chemistry and zoology in 1948 from Dartmouth College and a diploma in medical sciences from Dartmouth Medical School in 1950. In 1952, he graduated from the University of Virginia with work in geology. Later he attended the University of Miami where he completed graduate work in marine biology and oceanography.

From 1952 to 1962 he was employed by the Portland Pipe Line Corp. in Portland. He went on to teach biology, physical science, geology, earth science and mathematics in Florida schools for nearly 20 years. In 1986 he moved to the Mt. Washington Valley and worked alongside his son for over 18 years, the last eight of which were spent as a local signmaker in Jackson. N.H.

Survivors include three sons, Eben R. Moss and daughter-in-law, Brenda of Jackson, N.H., Michael D. Moss of Cape Elizabeth, and Ian L. Moss of Tamworth, N.H.; and two grandchildren, Eben D. and Jesse O. Moss.

At his request, no services will be held. Donations in his memory may be made to Save the Children Federation, Inc., 54 Wilton Road, Westport, CT 06881.

The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway was in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude Muise
2001-09-27

Gertrude Warren Muise, 85, of Boothbay Harbor died Saturday, September 22 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on September 18, 1916, she was the daughter of Scott Matthews and Bessie Barter Warren. She attended local schools until stricken with tuberculosis in the early 1930s.

On November 29, 1941 she married Willard Muise. Just after Pearl Harbor, Mr. Muise enlisted in the Navy. She continued to make their home in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Muise was very active in the United Methodist Church of Boothbay Harbor of which she was a life-long member. She taught Sunday School, held many offices in the church and attended several Methodist Conferences and was a member of the Susanna Wesley Circle of United Methodist Women.

She loved feeding and watching the birds and took pride in her cooking, especially her pies. She enjoyed music and reading and her flower garden.

Mrs. Muise held her main accomplishments in older years. She earned her driver's license at the age of 53 and received her high school diploma at the age of 75.

She was predeceased by her husband, Willard Muise, who died in 2000; twin sons; four sisters; and two brothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda and her husband Garvin Golding of Lewiston, and Barbara and her husband Allan Walton of Boothbay; four grandchildren, Valery Golden of Lewiston, Marcus and his wife Lachelle Golding of Yardley, Penn., Jacob and Carly Walton, both of Boothbay; two great-grandchildren, Maxwell Marschhausen of Lewiston and Riley Golding of Yardley, Penn.; one sister, Patricia and her husband Ronald Welsh of Sitka, Alaska; and many special nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, September 26 at the United Methodist Church of Boothbay Harbor with The Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Gertrude Muise to Burnt Island Project, c/o Elaine Jones, P.O. Box 8, West Boothbay Harbor, ME 04575.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Suzanne B. Mahle
2001-10-11

Suzanne Berard Mahle, 64, of Boothbay died October 2 in Baltimore, Md. where she was being treated for cancer.

Mrs. Mahle was a long-time resident of Alexandria, Va. where she worked for the Wharton and Jabob & Roberts real estate companies from the early 1970s to the 1990s. She retired to Maine in the fall of 1990.

She was born in Lewiston, the daughter of the late Franklin P. and Grace Tanguay Berard of Greene, Maine, where she was raised. She was a 1954 graduate of Lewiston High School. She graduated from Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts in 1958. From 1958 to 1972, she was a computer systems specialist with the Navy, Mitre Corp. and Johns Hopkins University.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria and Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor. She did volunteer work with ALIVE (Alexandrians Involved Ecumenically).

Survivors include her husband of 34 years, Jack D. Mahle of Boothbay; two daughters, Margaret Mahle Clark of Alexandria and Ellen E. Mahle of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and a sister, Margaret Berard Thomson of California.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church on Friday, October 26 at 8 a.m. A reception will follow in the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ALIVE, 2723 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22302.

Wendell E. Matthews
2001-10-25

Wendell Edward Matthews, 76, of Boothbay died at his home Thursday, October 18, 2001.

Born in Boothbay, he was the son of Harry and Margaret Bernier Matthews. He attended Boothbay region schools and recently received his high school diploma.

In September of 1942 he left school in his junior year and joined the United States Coast Guard. He served in the South Pacific and was discharged in November of 1945.

In 1946, he married Mary Potter and they celebrated their 55th anniversary in June.

He was a past member of the Boothbay Fire Department and a past member of the Kora Temple. He was a member of the Bayview Lodge and received his 50-year pin in March.

Mr. Matthews worked for Clayton Dodge in the lumber business and in several shipyards, and in 1990 he retired from working for Lois Spanal after 28 years as a gardener and maintenance man.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Larry of Otisfield, and Bruce and his wife Beth of Atkinson, New Hampshire; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Hardwick of Boothbay and Madlyn Delano of Wiscasset; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Sunday, October 21 with a Masonic service at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home. A graveside service was held on Monday, October 22 at Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay.

Donations may be made to the Lincoln County Humane Society, Atlantic Highway, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Lee S. Mandell
2001-11-08

Lee Schweppe Mandell, 52, passed peacefully Thursday, November 1 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City after a brief illness.

She was born in Montclair, N.J. in 1949. A life-long resident of Montclair and Squirrel Island, Lee was celebrated and loved by all who knew her. A graduate of Montclair High School, she worked devotedly at Schweppe & Company Realtors, a family business, for over 25 years.

An active member of Union Congregational Church, Lee served as a Stephen Minister, chaired Women of Union, and made invaluable contributions as a member of The Hospitality and Membership Committees.

Her extraordinary spirit and undying love for people endures with those who survive her. Her memory lives on with her husband, Chip, and their daughter, Aubin, and two sons, Taylor and Duke, whose daughters are Mary and Hope.

The youngest child of James J. Schweppe and the late Mary Ayres Schweppe, Lee also leaves two brothers, Jay of Montclair, N.J. and Dick of Falmouth.

A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at Union Congregational Church on Saturday, November 10 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Union Congregational Church of Upper Montclair, N.J. or the Squirrel Island Chapel, Squirrel Island, ME 04570

Funeral services are under the direction of the Arthur K. Brown, Inc., 337 Belleville Avenue, Bloomfield, N.J. 07003.

Patricia R. Marshall
2001-11-08

Patricia R. Marshall, 57, of Southbury, Conn., died Tuesday, September 11.

Born October 17, 1943 in Bridgeport, Conn., she was the daughter of the late William and Susan (Reynolds) Resko. She was a fifth grade teacher at Head O'Meadow Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. and enjoyed summers in Boothbay Harbor with her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen M. Poisson of Wilbraham, Mass. and Kellie M. Brown of Southbury; one brother, William Resko of Hailey, Idaho; and three grandchildren, Tyler and Madison Poisson and Ryan Brown.

A memorial service was held September 14 followed by private burial.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 40 North Street, Danbury, CT 06810.

James A. Moore
2001-11-15

James A. Moore, 90, of Glen Cove, Maine, died Oct. 11 after a long illness.

Moore, began his lifelong career in journalism as a mailroom employee of the Portland Press Herald, the Evening Express and the Maine Sunday Telegram. He later worked as a technician on teletypes in the Maine and Boston bureaus of The Associated Press.

In 1940, Moore became a reporter and photographer for the Press Herald?s Rockland office, and received national and local recognition for his photographs. He was a past member of the National Press Photographers Association's New England chapter, and served as the Maine group?s treasurer.

Surviving Moore are his wife, Cecile; three sons, James, David and Richard; four grandchildren; two brothers.
