Richard L. Main
2003-12-04

Richard L. Main, 76, died Monday, December 1 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born June 18, 1927 in Wiscasset, he was the son of Leslie and Elizabeth Day Main. He grew up in Wiscasset and attended local schools.

Mr. Main worked as a stone mason. He also dug worms and cut wood, and worked at Sample's Shipyard doing maintenance work.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and Navy. He was a member and past commander of the Isaac Giles V.F.W., and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, dancing and socializing.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Rena Main of Boothbay; two sons, Ernie Carver of West Boothbay and Allen Carver of Meriden, Conn.; three sisters, Margaret Whitter of Winterport, Alice Plummer and Betty Wylie, both of Boothbay; two brothers, John Main of Ellsworth, and Frank Main of Boothbay Harbor; grandchildren, Dennis Carver of Medford, Mass., Michael Carver of Portland, Brian and Kevin Carver of Boothbay, Allen Carver Jr., Shannon Carver and Tirrena Carver, all of Meriden, Conn.; two great-grandchildren, Kain and Brianna Carver, both of Meriden, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation hour will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday, December 5 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. Matthew McNutt will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 West 168 Street, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10032-9982. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Frances A. Mank
2003-06-05

Frances A. Mank, 82, of Wiscasset died Wednesday, May 28 at her residence. born in Wiscasset March 13, 1921, she was the daughter of Irving H. and Abbie (Grover) Lewis.

She attended Wiscasset schools and Wiscasset Academy. On December 5, 1938 she married Edward R. Mank Sr. She was employed at the Dodge Inn in Edgecomb and at the Bath Box Company in Bath.

Mrs. Mank was a member of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset. She enjoyed bowling and was a member of a team for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Edward R. Mank Sr. of Wiscasset; two sons, Edward R. Mank Jr. and his wife Joan of Bath, Richard L. Mank and his wife Carolyn of Wiscasset; one daughter, Brenda J. House and her husband Stephen of Wiscasset; three brothers, Kenneth Lewis, Jack Lewis, David Lewis, all of Massachusetts; four sisters, Alice Brewer of Boothbay Harbor, Vera Haynes and Gloria Lewis, both of Massachusetts, and Isabel Crocker of Wiscasset; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held Friday at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset. A funeral service was held Saturday, May 31 at the funeral home with Pastor Gary Hubley officiating. Burial followed in Grover Cemetery, Woolwich.

Memorial contributions were made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Ethel L. Marr
2003-10-30

Ethel Louise Marr, 94, of Middleboro, Mass., formerly of Duxbury and West Southport, died Sunday, October 26 at the Hannah BG Shaw Home in Middleboro. She was married to the late Edward E. (Jack) Marr.

Born in Carlton, Montana on March 20, 1909, she was the daughter of Anthony E. and Blanche L. (Emerson) Roberts. She was raised in Maine and was a former West Southport resident. Her husband's father, Jack Marr, was born and raised at Hendricks Head Light.

In the early 1940s, she moved to Duxbury, and resided there until she moved to Middleboro, to the Hannah BG Shaw Home. Mrs. Marr was a retired pre-school teacher in Duxbury, a home health aide in Duxbury, a day care provider and Sunday school teacher. Her family considered her the "world's best apple pie maker."

She received the Burkland School Eagle Feather award for her participation of excellence in a reading program after she had moved to Middleboro, when she was in her 80s. She taught her children and grandchildren how to make cookies, hold hands, and walk far.

Survivors include four daughters, Louise Staiger of Kingston, Jacquelin Marr of Edgewater, Fla., Anne Pearson of Shelby, Ala., and Harriet Wall of Palm Bay, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Hannah BG Shaw Home, Wareham St., Middleboro, on Thursday, October 30 at 10:30 a.m.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Hannah BG Shaw Home, 299 Wareham St., Middleboro, MA 02346.

Arrangements are by the Shepherd Funeral Home in Kingston.

Lloyd A. Merrifield, 80
2003-03-07

Lloyd A. Merrifield, 80, of Paris Hill Road, died early Saturday morning at Stephens Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Hiram, August 21, 1922, the son of Frank and Estelle Lowell Merrifield. He graduated from Fryeburg Academy and attended Gorham Normal School. He faithfully served his country in the Air Force during World War II. On December 28, 1963, he married Beverly Paine.

Lloyd spent his life as a blueberry grower, harvesting thousands of acres of blueberries throughout Maine and New Hampshire. He harvested the majority of Gray's blueberry crops throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. To those who worked for him his nickname was "Speedy". A Maine maple syrup producer for over 50 years, winning the title of "Maine's Best Maple Syrup" numerous times. He was a member of the Maine Wild Blueberry Growers Association, Maine Maple Syrup Producers Association, and honorary lifetime member of the Norway-Paris Snowhoppers Snowmobile Club. Being an avid outdoorsman, Lloyd enjoyed hunting, fishing, trap shooting and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed playing baseball for Fryeburg Academy and for many years afterward for various town teams. His hobbies included being a self-taught musician, playing the banjo, piano, harmonica, mandolin and violin. He and his wife Beverly enjoyed creating artwork from pressed flowers.

He is survived by his wife of South Paris, a daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Stephen Reed of Bowdoinham, a son Timothy of South Paris and a daughter and son-in-law Penney and Anthony Ward of Gray, one sister Alberta Adams of Dedham, MA, 5 grandchildren Amanda Reed Lewis, Kayla Reed, Tyler Merrifield, Rebecca and Ryan Ward and 2 great-grandchildren Olivia and Briana Lewis.

Special remembrances in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society, One Maine Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Kenneth R. Marston
2003-03-13

Kenneth Ray Marston, 77, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania and formerly of Boothbay Harbor, died unexpectedly on Friday, February 28 at Carlisle Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Monday, March 3 at Grace Baptist Church in Carlisle.

Born October 13, 1925 in Brunswick, he was a son of the late Delbert L. Marston and Gladys L. (Small) Marston. As he liked to say, he was a graduate of the "School of Hard Knocks" and proudly earned his GED. After 44 years of service, he retired as a Boson's Mate from the Merchant Marines and subsequently from Everybody's Restaurant in Boothbay Harbor.

He was a veteran of all major international conflicts involving the United States from pre-World War II through Vietnam and was awarded numerous decorations for his service, including: the Merchant Marine Combat Bar, the Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Bar, the Atlantic War Zone Bar, the Merchant Marine Defense Bar, the Victory Medal, the Pacific War Zone Bar, the Korean Service Bar, and the Vietnam Service Bar among others.

Mr. Marston attended St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Wiscasset, the United Methodist Church in Boothbay Harbor, and most recently, Grace Baptist Church in Carlisle, Penn. He was a member of the Seafarers' International Union (SIU) and the American Legion and was a Mason.

Survivors include his wife of nine years, Sarah Ann (Kelly) Marston of Carlisle; son Kurt R. Marston, daughter-in-law Deborah (Moore) Marston, and granddaughter Krista Marston, all of Standish; son Geoffrey K. Marston and daughter-in-law Lorraine (Hunter) Marston of Boothbay; son Kenneth D. Marston and daughter-in-law Misty (Erskine) Marston of Boothbay; son Frank D. Marston, daughter-in-law Deborah (Jones) Marston, and grandson Andrew Marston, all of Cape Elizabeth; son Matthew J. Marston Sr., daughter-in-law Julie (Hennessey) Marston, granddaughter Meagan Marston, and grandson Matthew J. Marston Jr., all of Boothbay; stepson Christopher Pecora, grandson Samuel Pecora, granddaughter Rachel Pecora, and grandson Matthew Pecora, all of Carlisle, Penn; stepson Jefferson Pecora and daughter-in-law Jennifer (Gaddis) Pecora of Longboat Key, Fla.; brother Bruce Marston, sister-in-law Ellen of Brunswick; niece Susan (Ryall) Spurling and husband Royce Spurling, great-nieces Kim Zelna and Dawn Patterson and great-nephew Blaine Spurling; nephew Thomas and wife Lisa (Klaiber) Marston, niece Marilyn (Marston) Dill and husband Richard Dill, great-niece Joy (Dill) Hendrix, great-nephew Jason Dill, nice, Serena (Marston) Whitcher and husband Paul Whitcher, great-niece Sarah and Hannah Whitcher, great-nephews Zane, Jake and George Whitcher; and sister Nancy Marston of Plaistow, N.H.

Mr. Marston was predeceased by wife of 40 years, Laurel E. (Chalcraft) Marston, who died September 16, 1987, and granddaughter Magdalyn J. Pecora, who died April 15, 2002.

A memorial service and celebration of Ken Marston's life will be held in the Boothbay area in the spring of 2003. Location, date and time will be announced at a later date.

Flora E. May
2003-02-27

Flora E. (Webber) May, 100, died December 7, 2002 at Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood, N.H. She was the wife of Alexander May.

She was born, raised and educated in Boothbay. when she married, she moved with her husband to the Jamaica Plain section of Boston until her husband died. She then moved to Hampstead, N.H. Mrs. May lived there until in her 90s when she went to live at Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood, N.H.

Survivors include two sons, Robert A. May of Brewster, Mass. and Richard A. May of Cottonwood, Arizona; one daughter, Marjorie M. Tremblay of Formoso, Kansas; one sister, Mildred Eastman of Brunswick; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchild-ren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3 in the chapel at Rockingham County Nursing Home.

Marshall McFarland
2003-09-04

Marshall A. McFarland, 73, of South Bristol, died Thursday, August 28 at his home after a long battle with cancer. A son of Sumner F. and Helen A. (Nason) McFarland, he was born at home January 27, 1930.

Mr. McFarland spent most of his life in the fishing industry. He worked for many years as a lobsterman, both prior to, and after retirement. He also owned and operated South Bristol Fisheries, managed Hook's Lobster Pound and at a time of his retirement was doing finish cabinetry at Goudy & Stevens Boat Yard. He was a member of the Anchor Lodge of Masons for 40 years, the Order of Red Men and loved scale boat building. He was noted in his family as a loving father and for his dancing skills and humor.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine of South Bristol; nine children, Virginia A. Willey of Bristol, Michael J. McFarland of Gardner, Mass., Lisa M. Farrin of Rockland, Peter A. McCullagh of Nobleboro, Lori A. Orne of Bristol, Mary Anne McCullagh of Lake Worth, Fla., Anthony M. McFarland of Bristol, Cheryl Lynn Tedford of Edgecomb and Pauline Helen Busick of Osceola, Iowa; three brothers, Sumner of Limerick, James of South Bristol and Arthur of New Harbor; five sisters, Victoria Chandler of Nobleboro, Rita Sewell of Damariscotta, Geraldine Mahan of Pemaquid Harbor, Evelyn Ball of Round Pond and Beryl Thompson of Rockland; three stepchildren, Beth Tracy of Garland, Barbara Cote of Bucksport and Karen McCaul of Lewiston; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

His brother, Roland, and sister, Verona Keene predeceased him.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, September 3 at the West Bristol Cemetery, Walpole, with The Rev. Jeff Belcher officiating.

If desired, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086. Arrangements are under the care of the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

James H. McGlauflin
2003-11-13

James Harry McGlauflin, 74, of Standish, died Wednesday, November 5.

Born in Presque Isle, he was the son of James Marvin McGlauflin and Mabel Clair Condon-McGlauflin. He attended Boothbay Harbor High School, graduating in 1946 and attended the University of Maine, Brunswick Campus.

From 1945 to 1949 he served in the U.S. Navy and from 1951 to 1953 in the U.S. Army. He received the Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan) and three Overseas Bars.

On July 4, 1951 he married Lorene Pinkham. They shared their 52 years in Maine, Ohio and Connecticut with two children, James Michael Mc-Glauflin and Krista L. Freeman-McGlauflin.

After 28 years he retired from General Dynamics Electric Boat Division as a nuclear engineer in Groton, Conn. and returned to Maine where he was a member of the Standish Senior Citizens and the Sebago Lake Congregational Church. He became very active in the community, serving as a volunteer for AARP to the Maine Legislative Committee.

Mr. McGlauflin served on the Advisory Council for Southern Maine Area Agency on Aging and in 1993 he participated in the College of Knowledge, Maine State Conference for AARP. In 1995 he received a nomination for The Jefferson Awards.

He loved to travel and meet people.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene; two children, Michael, Krista and her husband Richard; and three grandchildren, James Griswold, Jenny Freeman and Benjamin Freeman.

A funeral service was held Monday, November 10 at the Maine Veterans cemetery in Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Standish EMS, P.O. Box 597, Standish, ME 04084.

Donald E. McGlauflin
2001-02-01

Donald Emery McGlauflin, 86, of Chelsea passed away peacefully on January 27, 2001 at his home surrounded by his loved ones following a brief, courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Mapleton, Maine on March 2, 1914, he was the son of Frederick and Idella Emery McGlauflin. He attended Mapleton School and then moved to Portage Lake, where the family lived until moving to Boothbay Harbor, where he attended Boothbay Harbor High School.

Mr. McGlauflin owned and operated his own grocery store in West Boothbay Harbor before moving to Augusta, where he worked at Bernard's and Mister Market as a meat cutter until his retirement.

He was a lifelong member of the Seaside Lodge of Masons in Boothbay Harbor, and was an avid gardener, who shared produce with his neighbors and friends. He enjoyed watching the birds, and spending time with his pet poodle.

Mr. McGlauflin was predeceased by both parents, a sister, Marjorie, a brother, James, and a nephew, Roger McGlauflin.

Surviving are a daughter, Ruth Robinson of Parrish, Florida; his longtime companion, Helen Austin, of Chelsea; his "adopted" family, Donna Rollins of Augusta, Diana Bonnevie of Jay, Edward Austin of Chelsea; a nephew, James and his wife Lorene McGlauflin of Standish; a niece, Barbara McGlauflin of Boothbay Harbor; a grandson, Alan Williams of Trevett; granddaughters Linda McFarland of Bremen and Lainie Miller of Birmingham, Alabama; and several great-grand-children, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren from his adopted family.

Funeral services were held January 30 at the Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home in Augusta. Spring burial will be in the Roadside cemetery in Friendship. Friends who wish may make donations to the HealthReach Home Care and Hospice or to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society.

Lucille A. L. McIntyre
2003-03-20

Lucille Asenath Linton "Kitty" McIntyre, 90, of Damariscotta, died Monday, March 17 at Cove's Edge Nursing Facility in Damariscotta.

Born in Clinton, Mass. on June 28, 1912, she was the daughter of Joseph and Ella (Beer) Linton.

In 1934 she graduated from Framingham State College as a home economics major. She worked many years for the Red Cross in Lowell, Mass. following the 1936 flood. She taught home economics at the Hitchcock Free Academy in Brimfield, Mass., as well as a dietitian at the Noble Hospital in Westfield, Mass. Coming to Maine during World War II, she was a social worker trainee for the State of Maine Department of Welfare, and was a control room engineer in Portland for WCSH from 1943 to 1956. Returning to the state of Connecticut, she was a real estate agent for the Roy Robbins Agency of Avon, Conn.

On May 17, 1941, she married Hugh S. McIntyre. Upon retirement, they moved to the Merry Island Road in Edgecomb in 1976.

Mrs. McIntyre was an avid reader, a serious student of genealogy, and a bird watcher. She was involved in many local activities, especially the Damariscotta-Newcastle Women's Club and the Lincoln Home. She was a member of the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle, where, until her illness, was very active on many boards and committees.

She was predeceased by her husband, Hugh in 1991.

Survivors include niece Joyce Sedlak of Union, Conn., and niece and her husband, Sally McGrath of Agawam, Mass.

At Mrs. McIntyre's request there will be no services. Arrangements are under the care of the Strong Funeral Home, 61 Main Street in Damariscotta.
