Natalie Y. McKenney
2003-04-03

Natalie Yale McKenney, age 78, of Richmond, died Sunday, March 30, in Gardiner.

Born on September 22, 1924 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Arthur Clark and Marion Yale Harrington. She attended the Leominster School system and the University of New Hampshire for two years and transferred to Fitchburg State College where she graduated in 1945.

For 27 years, she taught elementary school in Leominster, Ashburnham and Ashby, Massachusetts. She moved to Maine in 1972 and taught Latin at Wiscasset High School, Mt. Ararat and Brunswick High School.

Mrs. McKenney was a long-time member of NEARA and Early Sites, two archaeological societies.

She enjoyed traveling and she visited Hudson Bay, Quebec, the Maritime provinces and Newfoundland. She visited Hawaii, Italy and took two trips to England to view historical places.

Survivors include daughter Terry Yale and her husband David Kamila of Litchfield; daughter Wendy Harrington of Gardiner; daughter Lee McKenney of Fitchburg, Massachusetts; son Gilson McKenney of Litchfield; daughter Barbara McKenney of Richmond; grandchildren, John Meagher, Tracey Meagher, Avery Yale Kamila, Kay-Lee Yale Kamila, Rozalynn Parkhurst-Prout, Benjamin Parkhurst; great-grandson, Dalton Meagher; sister, Marion Pritchard and her husband James Pritchard of Leominster, Massachusetts; nieces Linda Aschennbrenner and Jennifer Safron; nephews Jimmy Pritchard and Shawn Pritchard.

A family service will be held at Kincer Funeral Home in Richmond. In honor of Mrs. McKenney's life-long passion for reading and learning, donations may be sent to the Gardiner Library in lieu of flowers.

James F. McLaughlin
2003-03-27

James Fraser "Jim" McLaughlin, 80, died March 14 in Toronto.

Since 1958 he has been a summer resident of Southport.

Mr. McLaughlin was the husband of Helen McLaughlin; the father of Carol and Ray Beauvais of Cobourg, Ontario, Bill and Janet McLaughlin of Southport and Venice, Florida, and Lesley and John Beech of Thornhill, Ontario; the grandfather of Michelle and Dean Hare of Bradenton, Florida, Liz McLaughlin of Boston, Mass., and Jennifer and Chris Beech of Thornhill, Ontario; the brother of Donald McLaughlin of Ithaca, N.Y.; and step-brother of Judy Flynn of Boxford, Mass.

A service was held in Toronto on March 17.

Evelyn E. McLellan
2003-05-01

Evelyn E. McLellan, 73 of Boothbay died April 27 in Boothbay Harbor.

Born October 16, 1929 in Augusta, she was the daughter of Milton R. and Theresa A. Brown. She was a graduate of St. Mary Parochial School and Cony High School.

She and Philip McLellan were married July 17, 1949 at Sacred Heart Church in Waterville. They resided in Rockland where they raised four sons.

Prior to moving to Boothbay in 1970, she and Phil owned and operated "Phil's Corner," a popular seafood restaurant in the heart of Rockland where Evelyn was known affectionately as "Mrs. Phil" by all the local school kids.

After moving to Boothbay she operated a wine shop in the Opera House Mall, she also operated the Whistle Stop and Ice Cream Shop at Boothbay Railway Village and "Mrs. Phil's Pies."

Mrs. McLellan enjoyed golfing and sewing and was an admirer of birch trees. She was known for her flower garden, "Mrs. Phil's" people came from all over to look at them, she was active in the Jaycee Wives Club of Rockland, the Democratic Party and was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

She was predeceased by her son, Philip A. McLellan, Jr., in 1983, and her granddaughter, Leah M. McLellan, in 1977.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Philip A. McLellan of Boothbay; three sons, David B. McLellan and his wife Sally of Rockland, Michael E. McLellan of Plantation, Fla., and Robert C. McLellan and his wife Deborah of St. Clarita, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Ruth McLellan of Boothbay; three brothers, Walter R. Brown of Togus, Graham F. Brown of Chelsea, and John M. Brown of Waterville; seven grandchildren, Angela McLellan of Boothbay Harbor, Terry Childs of Bryant Pond, Lisa McLellan of Rockland, David McLellan, Jr. of Rockland, Hollyann McLellan of Eureka, Calif., Kasey Josephs of Bakersfield, Calif., and Dennis McLellan of Denver, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor. Father Michael McGarriglle will officiate. Memorial donations in Evelyn's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Frank McQuaid
2003-08-28

Frank McQuaid, an antiquarian bookseller in Edgecomb for 42 years, died at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta on Tuesday, August 12.

His varied eccentricities over his 83 years were partly the result of wartime encounter with a Messerschmidt 109 which blew the front of his B-17 to pieces. With a dead bombardier in front and a dead co-pilot behind, a wounded McQuaid safely navigated his ship and crew home, winning a Distinguished Flying Cross for his effort.

Mr. McQuaid appreciated the natural environment, especially hummingbirds, wildflowers and Florida marine life. There was always a political concern in his heart for the disadvantaged of the planet.

Survivors include Margaret ("Maggy") McQuaid, and two sons, Kim, a teacher in Ohio and Kevin, a world traveler of Edgecomb.

Margaret F. McQuaid
2003-11-13

Margaret F. (Maggy) McQuaid died October 17 at the Gregory Wing of St. Andrews Hospital.

All her life she shared her humor and sense of beauty with women throughout the region, as both a hairdresser and a human being.

Mrs. McQauid was consistently kind, supportive and always read to her children when they were little and therein lie tales of wonder, learning and discovery.

Survivors include her sons, Kim, a college teacher and Kevin, who helped care for her in her final years.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Boothbay Region Land Trust, or by passing along laughter to those in need of it.

Helen A. Metcalf
2003-10-30

Helen Arlene Metcalf, 77, of Boothbay Harbor died Thursday, October 16 at her grandson's home in North East, Maryland surrounded by family.

Born in Boothbay Harbor September 6, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Helen C. Merrill and Kenneth Kiah Merrill.

She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Buck of Greenwood, Del.; four grandchildren, Aaron Nordhoff of North East, Md., Jaime Ober of Ridgely, Md., Jessie and Josh Buck, both from Greenwood, Del.; three great-grandchildren, Nicolas and Christopher Nordhoff, both from North East, Md., and Kyle Ober of Ridgely, Md.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Rona Sue Metcalf.

Private services will be held in Boothbay Harbor.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Northern Chesapeake

Robert E. Michael Sr.
2003-07-17

Robert Edward Michael Sr. of Boothbay Harbor died after a long illness on Sunday, July 6 at 1:15 a.m., at the Brentwood Nursing Home in Yarmouth.

Born on March 17, 1932 in the Roxborough suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late William Henry Michael Sr. and Flora (List) Michael.

In 1951, he joined the U.S. Navy, and after his basic training in

Maryland, he graduated from two Naval Technical schools. He graduated from Aerial School in Jacksonville, Fla. and from the Aerial Photography school in Pensacola, Fla., It was during this time, that he met his wife, Diane Ballard of Southwest Harbor, who was also in the Navy and they graduated together. After their marriage, they both served the Navy in Washington D.C. until their discharges.

Mr. Michael then moved his family, now numbering three (his first child was born in Bethesda Naval Hospital), to Milford, Delaware, where for five years, he worked as a foreman in a large textile mill. His second child, a daughter, was born in Milford. They then moved to Southwest Harbor, where he worked at Manset Marine Supply store. In 1960, he moved his family to Boothbay Harbor

For several years he worked with "Marine Service," which is now "Tugboat Inn." He also worked as manager at Blake's Marine, as a purchaser at Hodgdon Brothers Boat Building yard in East Boothbay, He then worked with Goudy & Stevens in E. Boothbay, until he decided to pursue his dream of being a carpenter.

He was civic minded and served on the zoning board in Boothbay Harbor, and later, on the planning board. He loved music and sang in the church choir. He sang solos and sang for many years with the Choralairs. He had become a Christian while living in Delaware, and his favorite music was that which told of Jesus, his saviour. He enjoyed meeting with friends early in the mornings, to have a cup of coffee before starting the day's work.

He was predeceased by a sister, Rae Michael, and a brother, William Michael Jr.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 51 years, Diane (Ballard) Michael; two sons, Robert E. Michael Jr. and daughter-in-law Nancy (Small) Michael of Portland and Samuel Alan Michael and daughter-in-law Margaret (Monn) Michael; three daughters, Deborah Ruth (Michael) Gatz and son-in-law Philip Gatz Jr. of Phillipsburg New Jersey, Lenore Grace (Michael) Dunn and son-in-law Michael Dunn of Wiscasset, and Sarah Farnham (Michael) Healey and son-in-law Joseph Edward Healey of Bridgton; one sister, Jane Hinkle and a brother-in-law, Robert Hinkle of Philadelphia, Penn.; 13 grandchildren (a 14th expected at the end of the year); and four great-grand-children

There will be a memorial and celebration of his life at the Boothbay Baptist Church on Friday, August 1 at 3 p.m.

Roxanne L. Michaud
2003-04-24

Roxanne Lee Michaud, 68, of Bath, formerly of Boothbay Harbor, died Monday, April 14 at the Clover Living Center in Auburn.

Born in Boothbay Harbor April 3, 1935, she was a daughter of Oliver and Pearl Pitcher Newcomb. She attended Boothbay Region schools.

Mrs. Michaud worked at the Nivea Hand Cream Company in Connecticut for several years. Upon moving back to Maine, she worked as a chambermaid in the Boothbay Region.

She was a member of the Boothbay American Legion Women's Auxiliary.

Mrs. Michaud enjoyed gardening, shopping, beano, and especially family gatherings.

Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Louis (Bert) Michaud of Bath; six daughters, Diane Meadowcroft of Delaware City, Delaware, Elizabeth Doucette of Brunswick, Mary Moulton of Limington, Kathy Mansfield of Whitefield, Yvonne Jacques of Bowdoinham and Heidi Leighton of Boothbay; two sons, Mark Dighton of Lander, Wyoming and Shane Michaud of Whitefield; three sisters, Mary Peaslee and Rebecca Stoddard, both of Boothbay and Virginia Chubbuck of Edgecomb; 26 grandchildren; 17 great-grand-children; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request, there will be no services.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Topsham, ME 04086.

Arrangements are by Pine State Cremation Service, P.O. Box 92, Richmond, Maine.

Lauri A. Miete
2003-05-22

Lauri A. Miete, 90, died Saturday, May 17 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor of complications from a recent heart attack and stroke.

Born in West Alna on May 9, 1913, he was the son of Otto L. and Annie M. (Tirronen) Miete. He attended West Alna schools and Wiscasset Academy. For over 50 years he was a self-employed lumberjack.

Mr. Miete loved hunting, bowling and pitching horseshoes, all of which he participated in until shortly before his death.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Mae Pelto, Aune Graffam and Helmi Miete, and by one brother, Paul Miete.

Survivors include two brothers, Olavi Miete of Alna and Walter Miete and his wife M. Jo of Wiscasset; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Tuesday at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset. A graveside service was held Wednesday, May 21 at the Alna cemetery in Alna with Pastor Gary Hubley officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Acute Care at St. Andrews Hospital, St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Wayne P. Miller
2003-11-20

Wayne Putnam Miller, 70, of Boothbay Harbor died Monday, November 17 surrounded by his family at Cove's Edge Skilled Care Unit in Damariscotta after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born August 21, 1933 in Concord, N.H., he was the son of Walter K. Miller and Gladys R. Miller. He grew up in Freeport and was a graduate of Freeport High School in the class of 1953. Mr. Miller was a veteran of the U.S. Army, honorably discharged in 1962.

For many years, he was employed in the commercial fishing industry in the Boothbay Region. He worked at Bowdoin College in the Physical Plant Department for over 17 years.

Mr. Miller was an avid sports fan, always cheering for his favorite teams: the Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, and the local high school teams. He also enjoyed listening to Boston sports talk radio and quoting sports trivia. He particularly enjoyed the time spent with his family at their condo in North Conway, N.H.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Marita H. Miller of Boothbay Harbor; sons, Alan W. Miller and his wife Donna of Bangor and Kevin W. Miller and his wife Mary of Boothbay Harbor; daughter, Lisa M. Clarke and her husband James of Edgecomb; grandchildren, Jaret, Ryan and Gabrielle Miller of Bangor, Alexandra and Nicole Clark of Edgecomb, Renee, Joshua, and Jennifer Miller of Boothbay Harbor; sister, Beverly Bartlett and her husband Richard of Topsham; several brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Respecting Mr. Miller's wishes, a private family funeral was held Wednesday, November 19 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay. Burial followed in the Grove cemetery in Freeport. Mr. Miller's family wishes to express their gratitude to the entire staff of Cove's Edge Skilled Care Unit and Miles Home Health Care/Hospice for their professionalism and loving care.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Wayne P. Miller may be made to Miles Home Health/ Hospice, 40 Belvedere Road, Damariscotta 04543. Arrangements were under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
