Julia P. Mitchell
2004-02-05

Julia Pinkham Mitchell, 93, a native of Cherryfield, died Saturday, January 31, at the Pleasant Bay Nursing Home on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

She was the wife of Stanley W. Mitchell Sr. who died December 4, 1995 in Millbridge.

Born in Cherryfield, She spent most of her working life in Boothbay Harbor, where she was employed at several local businesses, the last of which was Bob's Photo and TV, where she was also deputy town clerk for Boothbay Harbor. She was active in the Pythian Sisters and Order of the Eastern Star in Boothbay and in local church groups here and in Millbridge.

Mrs. Mitchell left Millbridge in the late 1920s and moved to New York with her husband where they resided until the early 1940s when they moved to Boothbay Harbor. They returned to Millbridge in 1980 after she and her husband retired. She moved to Witherfield, Conn. in 1997 where she lived with her son, Malcolm and wife Betty-Lou until entering the Pleasant Bay Nursing Home on Cape Cod.

She was predeceased by a son, Stanley W. Mitchell Jr. and is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Malcolm A. Mitchell and Betty-Lou of South Chatham, Mass; daughter-in-law Cora Mitchell of Danbury, Conn.; two granddaughters, Tracie Mitchell and Gina Mitchell of Glastonbury, Conn.; two grandsons, Stanley W. Mitchell III of Naperville, Ill. and James Mitchell of Hinsdale, N.H.; two brothers, Francis Pinkham and James Pinkham; four sisters, Amelia Jones, Nellie Davis, all of Maine, Edith Hanks of Mass. and Maxine Larson of N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Millbridge Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Walter B. Mohr
2004-01-08

Walter Budd Mohr, 82, died peacefully at his home in Boothbay Harbor on Saturday, December 27. He was the only child of Elizabeth Budd and Walter R. Mohr of Rutherford, New Jersey.

A decorated veteran of World War II in the European Theater, he served in the 334th Infantry Battalion. Following the war, he joined Scott Paper Company as a salesman and rose through the company to become a senior manager in the Industrial Produce Sales Division at the Philadelphia corporate headquarters. After retirement he operated his own consulting business until he moved to Maine in 1995.

An Eagle Scout, he devoted time to the Boy Scouts of America while in Media, Pennsylvania, and was a dedicated alumnus of Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

He and his wife, Marilyn, who survives him, recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Also surviving are three children: Stewart, Wendy, and Stephen, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service is planned at a later date in Christmas Cove. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Miles Home Health Care, Hospice of Maine, 35 Miles Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Arrangements are being made by Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

Frank Morang
2004-01-16

Frank C. Morang, Sr., 58, a resident of Birchwood Road in Gray, died on Friday, January 9, at Maine Medical Center in Portland following a brief illness.

He was born September 24, 1945, in Portland, the son of Charles B. and Irene A. (Moran) Morang. He was a lifelong resident of the Portland area and graduated from Portland High School with the Class of 1964.

Mr. Morang was a lifelong entrepreneur. His many business ventures included owning a restaurant, retail store, and many apartment buildings. He took pride in operating his horse and buggy service in Portland's Old Port. Frank built and remodeled numerous homes and businesses over the past four decades as owner of Frank Morang, Sr., General Contracting.

He attended The Anglican Cathedral of St. Paul of Portland and was a member of the Masonic Lodge of South Portland.

Mr. Morang will be remembered and honored for the special way he touched so many people. Frank always put the needs of others ahead of his own. His kind heart and giving nature were felt by all who knew and admired him. His generosity was also extended to others who did not have the benefit of knowing him through his quiet donations made to many Portland area families, particularly around the holidays.

He was an avid outdoorsman who especially enjoyed fishing and hunting. His favorite retreat was his camp at Moosehead Lake, and every fall he could be found hunting on Sugar Island.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Virginia L. (Ball) Morang, of Gray; a daughter, Marie E. Morang of Windham, one son, Frank C. Morang, Jr. of Falmouth; five sisters, Ella Misener, of Portland, Ruth Saucier, of Lisbon Falls, Lorraine Christensen, of Standish, andConnie Frasier and Elizabeth Keiran, both of Westbrook; one brother, John B. Morang, of Freeport; six grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, January 13, at Hay & Peabody Funeral Home, 749 Congress Street, Portland. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 14, at the Anglican Cathedral of St. Paul Church, with Reverend Lester E. York officiating. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Topsham, ME 04086-1240 in Mr. Morang's memory.

Sophia Morton
2004-02-05

Sophia Morton, 94, died Wednesday, January 28 at Cove's Edge in Damariscotta.

She grew up and attended local schools on Barters Island and the Barters Island Baptist Church. She was a live-in maid in Boothbay Harbor, and also cleaned cottages and picked crabs.

Mrs. Morton was a homemaker and was a devoted mother to her 14 children; she lost six at birth.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint and always made mittens for the children every year.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest L. Morton, Sr. who died in 1978; and by a daughter, Erlene Willey in 1983.

Survivors included a brother, Edwin Harrington of Boothbay Harbor; three sons, Robert Morton of East Boothbay, Ernest Morton Jr. of Boothbay and Richard Morton of Bath; daughters, Dorothy Kirouac of Rocky Hill, Conn., Lorraine Rines of Boothbay Harbor, Joan Arsenault of Bath, Ernestine Townsend of West Buxton, and Mary Collamore Smale of Friendship; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service was held Saturday, January 31 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay, with Rev. Allen Wells-Goodwin officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Lucille F. Main
2004-07-08

Lucille F. Main, 66, of Trenton, formerly of Southport, died June 13 at a Bangor hospital after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 21, 1937 on Cranberry Island, she was the daughter of Hervey M. and Thelma M. (Alley) Spurling.

She leaves behind her husband, John F. Main of Trenton; her mother, Thelma Clough of Ellsworth; four children, Betty Cressey of Brooklin, Lu Ann Sprague of Richmond, Timothy Sprague of Otis, Donald Havener of Ellsworth, and their spouses; a sister, Betty Stone of Sebago; two brothers, Harley Spurling of Gray and David Spurling of Southwest Harbor; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Main was predeceased by her father; her stepfather, Harold Clough; two sisters, Rosemary and Marjorie; and a brother, George Spurling.

A private service was held at Sunnyside cemetery in Eastbrook. Cremation arrangements were by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Gifts in memory of Lucille may be sent to St. Jude's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

Azenith "Sis" MacGillivary
2004-09-30

Azenith Mae "Sis" Benner MacGillivary, 71, passed away Sunday, September 26, at Maine Medical Center.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on November 18, 1932, she was a daughter of Ross and Susie Barter Benner.

She grew up in Boothbay Harbor and attended local schools

Mrs. McGillivary worked at Jordan's Restaurant as a housekeeper and at Mariners Grill in Boothbay Harbor.

She married John MacGillivary and they lived in Five Islands until his death in 1995.

After Mr. MacGillivary death, she moved back to Boothbay Harbor to live with her son, David.

She enjoyed flowers, puzzles, doing crossword puzzles and spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, John MacGillivary

Survivors include a son, David and wife Emma Benner, of Boothbay Harbor; two daughters, Robyn Lusk and husband Dennis of Tacoma, Wash., and Vanessa Sansouci, of Lake City, Fla. one brother, Richard Benner of Franklin, N.H.; three sisters, Jeanette Main and Paulette Brown, both of Boothbay Harbor, and Suzanne Raudenbush of Southport; five grandchildren, Josh Benner and Jake Tibbetts, both of Tacoma, Wash., David Benner and Lori Upham, both of Boothbay Harbor, and Tre' Sansouci of Lake City, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, September 29, at the Oaklawn cemetery in Boothbay Harbor, with Al Roberts officiating.

Arrangements were under the care of Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Leonard K. Maliska
2004-05-13

Leonard Karol (Lenny) Maliska, 86, of Swanton, Vt. and Southport, died peacefully late Thursday, May 6, 2004, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Al-bans, Vermont.

Born on June 1, 1917, in Brockton, Massachusetts, he was the son of Karol and Amelia (Kundicz) Maliska. Mr. Maliska grew up in Brockton and graduated from Brockton High School in 1937. After graduation, he went to work at Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Mass. On April 4, 1942, he married Jane Brooks MacKnight in the All Saints Episcopal Church in Belmont.

He was drafted into the Army in 1944, but never served due to medical reasons. After World War II, Lenny joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary where he protected the Boston Harbor submarine net. He was with the Hingham Flotilla #508 and served with the auxiliary for 42 years.

After living in Brockton for three years, Mr. Maliska and his new family moved to Camden. He began working for the New England Telephone Company, where he was a long-distance cable splicer for 33 years.

He joined the Wawenock Power Squadron in Damariscotta, studied radar and ship piloting.

He was active in St. Thomas's Episcopal Church in Camden as assistant treasurer, vestry member, Junior Warden and Senior Warden. He was the President of the Camden Snow Bowl for eight years in the 1950s. Through his Coast Guard affiliation, and with the help of many Coast Guardsmen of the Buoy Tender, Laurel, out of Rockland, he implemented the rebuilding of the 200-foot toboggan shoot.

Mr. Maliska was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of Kennebec Council. He was president for one year, Member at Large for State of Maine Pioneers, and current member of Retired Telephone Pioneers. He was a Mason with Amity Lodge #6 in Camden.

In 1978 he retired from New England Telephone. He and his wife sold their Camden home and retired to Capitol Island, Southport in 1979. They began wintering in Florida in 1979 and continued until 2000 when his health began failing. While still being able to summer in Maine, they wintered in their new home in Swanton, Vt.

He loved bowling, golfing, boating, fishing, hunting, watching sports, riding his bike, and especially tending to his vegetables and flowers.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jane; two children, son Leonard Karol Jr. and wife Patricia of Doylestown, Penn.; and daughter Sarah Stuart and husband James of Georgia, Vt.; brother Christopher Maliska of Winter Park, Florida; sister Lorraine Callahan of East Bridgewater, Mass.; four grandchildren, Geoffrey and Erik Maliska of South Lake Tahoe, California, Jennifer Stuart Wells of Georgia, Vt., and Melissa Stuart of Burlington, Vt.; two great-grandchildren, Hailey Blondin of Burlington and Cassidy Wells of Georgia.

There will be no visiting hours or funeral service in Vermont. There will be a burial service in Maine the second week of July. For those who wish, contributions in Mr. Maliska's memory can be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.

Arrangements have been under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue in Swanton, Vermont.

Beatrice K. Maltais
2004-08-26

Beatrice (Betty) Kennedy Maltais died Monday, August 23, at her home in Brunswick after a short illness.

Born March 29, 1920 in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of John P. Kennedy of Vassalboro, and D. Ruth Florence Kennedy of Ohio.

In 1937, she graduated from Oak Grove School in Vassalboro, and Colby College, Waterville, class of 1941. From 1965-1980 she taught French and Latin at Winslow High School.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Maltais was a member of the Boothbay Region and St. Petersburg, Florida Garden Clubs, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. She was a communicant at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Boothbay Harbor.

She enjoyed gardening, judging flower shows, reading, knitting, traveling, and being with her family.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Joseph B. (Maxie) Maltais, of Ocean Point, St. Petersburg, Fla.., and Brunswick; five children, David of Clyde, Texas, Juliana Cliffe of San Diego California, Lois of Bar Harbor, William of Littletown, N.H. and Mary Boutin of Brunswick; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mar-ian Walter of Vassalboro; several nieces and nephews and cousins. Her sister Patricia Lopez of Ohio predeceased her.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated in early October at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bath.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may can be sent to Boothbay Region Garden Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 183, West Boothbay Harbor, ME 04575 or Midcoast Region Hospice, 50 Baribeau Dr., Brunswick, ME 04011.
