Claribel Mansfield
2004-12-30

Claribel (Plant) Mansfield, 90, passed away Wednesday, December 22, at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born June 28, 1914 in Canton, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Frederic and Clara McKay Plant. For many years she resided in Canton and Stoughton, Mass.

During World War II, she volunteered to knit sweaters and roll bandages with the Red Cross. She also taught Sunday School and was involved with charitable efforts for veterans with disabilities.

She married Harold P. Mansfield Sr. and moved to Boothbay Harbor 40 years ago, where she and her husband founded "Boothbay Braids," which they operated for years, providing head twine to the lobster industry.

Mrs. Mansfield devoted her life to family, friends, and her constant faithful companion, her dog "Molly."

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold P. Mansfield Sr. and daughter Laila Lyons.

Survivors include her three children, Claribel L. Morris, of Fremont, N.H. and Trevett, Harold Mansfield Jr. of Boothbay Harbor, and Thomas Mansfield of Trevett; 11 grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized, but contributions may be made to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, 18 Corey Lane, Boothbay, ME 04537 in lieu of flowers.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Booth-bay.

Bettina R. Martin
2004-02-26

Bettina Rose Martin, 88, of Boothbay Harbor, passed away Monday, February 23 at Maine Medical Center.

Born Bettina Rose DiMascio in Schenectady, New York, April 28, 1915, she was the daughter of Cesidio and Giovannina (Cicchilli) DiMascio.

She spent her married years in New York, California and Florida. For nearly 30 years, she worked for such firms as General Electric, Varian Associates and Raytheon Electronics, yet still found the time and energy to admirably perform her duties as a mother and homemaker. Seven years ago, after the death of her second husband, she moved to Maine to live near her son and daughter-in-law. The last four years of her life were spent with them in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Martin loved family and children, and enjoyed traveling, dancing, cooking, bowling and playing bingo (and was always ready for a trip to Las Vegas or Foxwoods). She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Predeceased by her son Gerald Volpe of Newport Beach, Calif., she is survived by her daughter, Marie Ferrano of Lake Forest, Calif.; one son, Dennis Volpe of Boothbay Harbor; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Martin requested that there be no formal services, but she asked to be remembered in prayer. Also, the family encourages well wishers to make a donation in her memory to the Golden West College Foundation, Gerald Volpe Scholarship Fund (acct. #4036), P.O. Box P-1092, Huntington Beach, CA 92647-0592; or to a favorite charity of one's choice.

She will be laid to rest next to her son, Gerry, in Newport Beach, Calif.

Yvonne D. Maxwell
2004-04-29

Yvonne D. "Bonnie" Maxwell, 77, of Oxford, Maryland, died at her home Thursday, April 15. She was a longtime summer resident of Sprucewold.

Born April 23, 1926 in Atlantic City, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Marie Genta Donnelly.

After graduating from Gould Academy in Bethel, she attended Centenary Junior College in New Jersey where she received her AA degree. She then attended Laukenau School of Nursing in Philadelphia. During her nursing career, she worked at several local Philadelphia hospitals.

A member of the Church of The Holy Trinity in Oxford, where she was a member of the choir, she was also a member of the U.S. Navy League and the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. she was a volunteer for Talbot Hospice Foundation and volunteered for many Oxford community events.

Mrs. Maxwell's husband, E.G. Staley Maxwell, died August 27, 1995.

Survivors include her son, Keith M. Pfeifer and his wife Jane E. Slayton of Andover, N.H.; and three grandchild- ren, Kiersten D. Pfeifer of Norton, Mass., Justin T. Pfeifer of Gorham, and Madalyn T. Pfeifer of Andover, N.H.

Services were held Wednesday, April 21, in Easton, Maryland. Interment was private.

Memorial donations may be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

J. Douglas Maynard
2004-04-22

J. Douglas Maynard, 85, died at his home on Linekin Bay in East Boothbay, on Friday, April 9.

Born on July 7, 1918 in Yonkers, New York, he was the son of James H. Maynard and Gladys M. Woolfall.

Mr. Maynard graduated from New Rochelle High School, New Rochelle, N.Y. and was an Eagle Boy Scout. He went on to graduate with a BS from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. where he was a brother in the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. After graduating he studied for a year at Union Theological Seminary in New York City.

He began a career in transportation with the commuter railroad in New York City, moving on to Eastern Airlines where he was stationed in Ireland. A veteran, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy assigned to Eastern Airlines during WW II. When he returned from overseas he worked for American Export Airlines (later to become Pan American Airways) pioneering the emerging commercial air travel corridors across the north Atlantic.

After his tenure with PanAm, he began a career at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. During his 29-year career, he held various management and senior executive positions, retiring as Deputy Director, Tunnels and Bridges.

Mr. Maynard was a Boy Scout leader, served on numerous community boards and was a Deacon at Huguenot Memorial Presbyterian Church in Pelham, N.Y. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Jersey City YMCA for many years. He resided in Pelham, later moving to Chappaqua, N.Y. Upon his retirement, from the Port Authority, he moved to East Boothbay. He had been a longtime summer resident of Ocean Point. and also enjoyed extensive travel throughout the United States and Europe.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty Ann Perryman; four children, Betsy M. Lilley of Rochester, N.Y., J. Douglas Maynard Jr. of Contoocook, N.H., Martha M. Brisk of Hollis, N.H. and Perryman K. Maynard of Clayton, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert T. Maynard of Atlanta, Ga.; three nieces and nephews; and Barbara Meyer of Warner, N.H., a special friend and caregiver.

A memorial service and celebration of his life was held at the East Boothbay Methodist Church in East Boothbay on Monday, April 12.

Earl McFarland
2004-01-29

Earl McFarland of South Bristol, died Sunday, January 25 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born on August 29, 1924, he was the son of the late Vernon F. and Evelyn W. McFarland.

He attended local schools and was a graduate of Portland Business College. For ten years he was employed by the Portland Terminal Company, a subsidiary of the Boston & Maine and Maine Central Railroads.

In 1956 he want to work for Don S. Sewall Company in Boothbay Harbor as a bookkeeper, and was there for nearly 40 years. He also worked for Wotton's Lobster for many years.

Survivors include his nephew, Thomas J. Nickerson and his wife Karen of Boothbay; and several great-nieces and nephews.

A private burial will be held in the Main cemetery in South Bristol. If desired, donations in his memory may be made to the South Bristol Community Center, P.O. Box 103, South Bristol, ME 04568. Arrangements are under the care of Strong Funeral Home and Memorial Center in Damariscotta.

Priscilla McGuiggan
2004-12-02

Priscilla "Deanie" A. McGuiggan, 81, of Bath, died unexpectedly Thursday, November 25, at her home.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on December 2, 1922, she was a daughter of Harold D. and Ruby A. Gray Stover. She grew up in Boothbay Harbor and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School.

She moved to Bath and worked for Shepard's Shoe Store, Central Maine Power Company, Bath Daily Times, and the Coastal Journal.

On June 20, 1943, she married James McGuiggan at St. Mary's Church in Bath.

Mrs. McGuiggan was an excellent cook and seamstress, played the harmonica, and enjoyed writing in her journal and oil painting. She was devoted to her family and took great joy in hosting family gatherings at the family camp at Merrymeeting Bay.

She is predeceased by two sons, James S. McGuiggan of Bath who died in 1971, and Gerald D. McGuiggan of Bath who died in 1976.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years; a sister, Sadie Oxton of Bath; a daughter, Linda Carter and her husband Bobby of Boothbay Harbor; two sons, Daniel and his wife Colleen McGuiggan of Woolwich, and Lloyd "Duke" and his wife Brenda McGuiggan of Colton's Point, Maryland; eight grandchildren; seven great-grand-children; and two nephews.

Services will be private. Burial will take place at Oak Grove cemetery next to her sons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Rd., South Portland, ME 04106.

Arrangements are by Davis E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High Street in Bath.

Thomas R. McKay
2004-10-07

Thomas Reginald McKay of Pemaquid passed away Sunday, September 28 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Edgecomb on November 26, 1927, he was the son of Ernest and Pearl Philbrick McKay.

He graduated from Lincoln Academy and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. McKay was a member of Seaside Grange, an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his father in 1966 and his mother in 1984; one brother, Joseph Ernest McKay; and one sister, Margaret Blake.

Survivors include one daughter, Beth Ann Tracy of Silver Lake, N.H.; one granddaughter, Tammy and her husband Peter Casey of Turner; one grandson, Neil Morrill and his wife Heather of Fort Bliss, Texas; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Olive Wright of Pemaquid Harbor and Edith Lewis of Trevett; one brother, Alfred McKay of Edgecomb; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Friday, October 1 in the Union cemetery in Edgecomb.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Strong Funeral Home and Memorial Center in Damariscotta.

D. Arthur McKown
2004-06-10

David "Arthur" McKown, 104, died Sunday, June 6 at St. Andrews Village Assisted Living in Boothbay Harbor.

Born May 2, 1900 in West Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Dennis and Mary McKown.

Mr. McKown worked for the Department of Sea & Shore Fisheries for the State of Maine. In 1940 he began work for the U.S. Department of Fish & Wildlife, under the Department of Commerce as a Fisheries Marketing specialist. In 1970, he retired. He was a life member of Seaside Masonic Lodge #144 A.F. & A.M. and was also a member of the Kora Shrine.

He was very active in town affairs and served as a selectman and as chairman of the appeals board, budget committee and on the jury commission. He served on the school board when the Boothbay Harbor High School was built.

Mr. McKown was predeceased by his wife, Pearl, who died in 1979; and by a daughter, Barbara M. Meiklem in 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Ethel Marr and her husband Charles of West Boothbay Harbor; a son-in-law, Richard Meiklem of Norwich, Conn.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Donations may be made in Mr. McKown's memory to the charity of one's choice.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12 at the Ocean View cemetery in Boothbay.

Arrangements are under the are of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
