Helen R. McLean
2004-03-11

Helen R. McLean, 100, of Fort Myers, Florida, formerly of Medford and Winchester, Massachusetts, died Monday, March 1.

Born in New Brunswick, Canada on February 28, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Fenwick and Agnes (Edgar) Robinson.

She was a graduate of Mass Homeopathic Nursing School in Boston and was a retired registered nurse from New England Baptist Hospital.

Mrs. McLean was a longtime Medford resident and a member of Park Street Church in Boston for many years. She had also lived in Winchester and Boothbay and had been a resident of Fort Myers, Florida since 1990.

Mrs. McLean was the wife of the late Joseph K. McLean. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Laura Valore and Shirley Sanborn-White; and a grandson, Christian Zeiba.

Survivors include her daughter, Joan M. Zeiba of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, Vaughan Robinson of Medford, Mass.; a sister, Gertrude Bushey of Truro, Mass.; four grandchildren, Victoria, Dwight, Julianna and Sara Zeiba.; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Monday, March 8 at the McDonald Funeral Home in Wakefield, Mass. Interment was at Lakeside cemetery in Wakefield, Mass.

Dorothy B. McMahon
2004-09-09

Dorothy B. McMahon, age 84, of Greenfield, Mass., passed away on Aug. 27.

She was the daughter of Madeleine Lumsden and step-daughter of Bill Lumsden who had a cottage on McKown Point.She was the niece of Corliss and Almira Giles who had a cottage on Mill Cove Crest that is still in the family.

In 1940, she graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.

She married John J. McMahon Jr. in 1943. He predeceased her in 1999.

Mrs. McMahon spent many summer weeks in Boothbay Harbor with her family.

Her love of antiques, painting, amateur archeology and of dollhouses was known throughout Plainfield, Mass. where she and her family lived for over 30 years. Her miniture dollhouse collection of a New England Village has been donated to the Plainfield Historical Society. Survivors include her son, Jay McMahon and his wife Sue of Plainfield, Mass.; one daughter, Susan Louisignau and her husband Bill of Northfield, Mass; one sister, Ruth Bryn of Greenfield, Mass.; grandchildren, Julie Souci and her son Karl, Jennifer Coffin and her husband Ryan, daughter Alexa; stepchildren, Trevor and Brianna, all are of Maine, and Christina Louisignau of Vermont.

Funeral services were held in Plainfield on Monday, Aug. 30 at the Congregational Church.

Donations may be made to the Boothbay Harbor Historical Society.

Charles D. McMichael
2004-06-10

Charles Dean McMichael, 90, passed away Tuesday, June 1, at the Gregory Wing, St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor.

Born in Ariton, Alabama on December 1, 1913, he was the son of Charles and Annie Dean McMichael. At the age of six, he moved to California where he later graduated from a two-year Junior College.

After graduating Mr. McMichael enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He taught welding to women who took men's jobs during the WW II. He worked in the oil fields, putting dynamite in the holes. After the war he was sent east on a pipe-fitting job and decided to stay in the area. He was involved in building the first Folgers Coffee Plant in Sherman, Texas.

After retiring in 1980, he moved to Maine, enjoyed operating his own lobster boat while tending to 25-30 lobster traps. He enjoyed carpentry and built a house for his stepson Joe. He was known as a material "Handyman" and could build or fix anything that needed to be done.

Mr. McMichael was a member of the Boothbay American Legion; the Pipe Fitters Union #537; a 30-year member of AA, a true inspiration to many; and a devoted member of the Boothbay Harbor Methodist Church.

He was predeceased by his sister, Anne McMichael of Calif.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Patricia Hale McMichael of Boothbay; three daughters, Sharon Quinn of Leominster, Mass., Marie Brown and Penny Elliot, both of Sacramento, Calif.; three sons, Dennis McMichael of Melrose, Mass., Richard McMichael of San Francisco, Calif., and Robert McMichael of Fontana, Calif.; two stepchildren, Joseph McDermott of Sudbury, Mass., and Jane Rosenfield, of Brunswick; many grandchildren; great-grand-children; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces, nephews and cousins

A memorial service will be held at the McMichael residence, 938 Back River Road, Boothbay Saturday, July 10, at 11 a.m.

Donations may be made to charity of your choice in memory of Charles McMichael.

Weldon Ellsworth "Mac" McNinch
2004-10-29

Gray-Weldon Ellsworth "Mac" McNinch, 97 passed on October 26 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Weldon was born on February 28, 1907 in Bridgewater, Maine. He was one of nine children born to Asa and Alice Mosher McNinch. He attend schools in that area prior to moving to Woodstock, New Brunswick Canada where he worked with his father on the family farm.

In 1940 Mr. McNinch moved to Portland and married Lena C. Small of Gray. They were married for 24 years prior to her death in 1964. Weldon was a house painter prior to serving in the U.S. Army having been stationed in Staten Island, New York during WWII. He then worked for Portland Terminal as a painter in Civil Service at Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth. He retired from Portland Terminal in 1973. In June1971 he married Ruth Kinghorn Lamb of Windham. He was predeceased by Ruth in 1981. Mac enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and Saturday evening bean suppers, a New England Patriots and was an avid Red Sox fan. Throughout the years he opened his heart and home to many others in need of assistance. His greatest joy was his family to whom he passed on many gifts just by setting an example. His love of animals and gardening is now enjoyed by even his great grandchildren. Weldon was a 35 year member of Gray Post #86 American Legion. He is survived by a daughter Kathleen Skilling and her husband Richard of Gray. Two granddaughters; Diane Spencer of Gardiner and Cheryl L Verrill of Poland. Five great grandchildren. Marissa and Joseph of Windham. Raelyn of Gardiner and Caleb and Abram of Poland. Abram James McNinch Verrill his youngest great grandson is his namesake. A brother Elmer McNinch of Woodstock N.B. Canada and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday 6 to 9p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray where a funeral will be held 10a.m. Saturday. Pastor Douglas Hedstrom will officiate. The family gratefully acknowledges the loving care that Weldon received from Home Health and Hospice of Southern Maine.

Ethel M. Melcher
2004-04-08

Ethel M. Melcher, 79, died Sunday, April 4, at Pine Point Nursing Care Center in Scarborough, after a long illness.

Born March 24, 1925 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Earl and Myra Sherman Hutchins, and attended Boothbay schools.

Mrs. Melcher worked at the Boothbay Harbor Freezer and later at Mid Central Fish in Portland. She was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed gardening, lawn sales, Beano, cooking and watching the Red Sox. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Frank R. Melcher of Scarborough; one daughter, Nicky Winslow of Boothbay Harbor; three stepchildren, Nancy Wheeler of Boothbay Harbor, Roland Melcher of Brunswick and Stanton Melcher of Georgia; two sisters, Roberta Davis of Mystic, Conn., and Doris Dewitt of Damariscotta; one brother, Arthur Hutchins of Portland; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

At her request, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, April 9 at 3 p.m. in Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland, followed by a gathering of family and friends at the American Legion Hall in Scarborough,

Robert B. Melnuk
2004-05-20

Robert B. Melnuk, 81, of Wiscasset, died Thursday, May 13 at his residence.

Born in Wiscasset on October 31, 1922, he was the son of Phillip and Nina (Trussell) Melnuk.

Mr. Melnuk attended Dresden schools and Bridge Academy in Dresden. He was employed at Bath Iron Works.

On February 3, 1943 he married Bertha Daigle and they resided in Wiscasset.

He entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. He returned to Bath Iron Works in 1946 where he graduated the apprenticeship program as a first class machinist. He retired from Bath Iron Works in 1986.

Mr. Melnuk enjoyed fishing, smelt fishing, hunting and watching stock car racing. He was a member of the American Legion in Wiscasset.

He was predeceased by one son, Robert G. Melnuk on January 23, 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha M. Melnuk of Wiscasset; one daughter, Bonita "Bonnie" Woodman and her husband David of Woolwich; five grandchildren; four great-grandchild- ren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, May 18 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset with Rev. Ann Lovejoy-Johnson officiating. Burial followed in New Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

Ruth Merritt
2004-08-12

Ruth Merritt died August 7, 2004 in Baltimore, Md., of complicationsfrom Alzheimers.

Born Ruth Abbot Bowditch in 1915, the younger daughter of Horace Bowditch and Lucy [Eveleth] Bowditch, she grew up in Augusta. Her parents met on the steps of the Ocean Point post office around 1906.In 1916 her father purchased a 14-bedroom former boardinghouse at Ocean Point where Mrs. Merritt and her sister Olive [Polly] summered until the house was sold around 1926.The family then spent part of each summer at Ocean Point's Mizzentop cottage which they managed for a family friend, Virginia Curtis.

Her Ocean Point friends included Ruth Yerrill, Betty Mills and Jane Capon. Her sister Polly was married in the stone church at Ocean Point in 1935.

She married Groverman Blake Payne in 1946, and they continuedto visit Ocean Point until his death in 1963.In 1975 she bought a cottage on Capitol Island where she spent summers from 1975-1999with her second husband, Capt. Robert E. Merritt, who died in 2003. Her family still summers at Capitol Island.

Mrs. Merritt leaves her children from her marriage to Groverman Payne: Carolyn Payne Tighe, Douglass Blake Payne, Jonathan Bowditch Payne, and Lucinda Payne Pollack. She also leaves Robert's children from his previous marriage: Robert G. Merritt, Carol S. McCaffrey, Keith F. Merritt, and Pamela S. Nestor.

A memorial service is planned for September.

Margaret Lois Merry
2004-01-01

Margaret Lois Merry, 68, of Slidell, La., died Monday, December 22 at Slidell Memorial Hospital of heart failure.

For 42 years, Mrs. Merry was the beloved wife of James Alan Merry Sr., formerly of Wiscasset.

A native of Carnes, Miss., she was a homemaker, devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, James Alan Merry; children, Terry Glenn Beauman of Denver, Colo., James Alan Merry Jr. of Slidell, Pam Morgan of Gonzales, La., Robin Gittinger of Slidell, La., and Sandra Lemoine of Marksville, La.; three sisters, Viola Doyle, Beatrice Gardner and Louise Bittinger, all of Biloxi, Miss.; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by one sister, Tommy Nadeau; and one brother, Forest Spinks.

A private funeral graveside service was held on Wednesday, December 24 in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association.

Local arrangements were made by Honaker Funeral Home in Slidell, La.

Louis B. Michaud
2004-06-10

Louis B. Michaud, 83, of Auburn, passed away Monday, May 31, at Central Maine Medical Center.

Born in Auburn on January 26, 1921, he was the son of Laureat and Antoinette Michaud.

He left school at an early age to work in the Foundry in Lewiston and later as a welder as well as a great carpenter in the Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor area.

On June 23, 1967 he married Roxanne Dighton of Boothbay where they resided for many years.

Mr. Michaud had many hobbies including woodworking, fishing, hunting, gardening and especially time spent with family.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Roxanne on April 14, 2003, and a brother, Robert Michaud.

Survivors include by two daughters, Diane Meadowcroft of Delaware, and Heidi Leighton of Boothbay; four stepdaughters, Elizabeth Doucette of Brunswick, Yvonne Jacques of Bowdoinham, Mary Moulton of Richmond, Kathy Mansfield of Whitefield; one son, Shane Michaud of Whitefield; one stepson, Mark Dighton of Wyoming; one sister, Antoinette Demers of Auburn; 26 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchild-ren; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Sunday, June 13 at 2 p.m. at the Auburn Kingdom Hall, Hotel Road in Auburn.

Arrangements are under the care of Pine State Cremation Service, Yarmouth.
