D. Arthur McKown
2004-06-10

David "Arthur" McKown, 104, died Sunday, June 6 at St. Andrews Village Assisted Living in Boothbay Harbor.

Born May 2, 1900 in West Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Dennis and Mary McKown.

Mr. McKown worked for the Department of Sea & Shore Fisheries for the State of Maine. In 1940 he began work for the U.S. Department of Fish & Wildlife, under the Department of Commerce as a Fisheries Marketing specialist. In 1970, he retired. He was a life member of Seaside Masonic Lodge #144 A.F. & A.M. and was also a member of the Kora Shrine.

He was very active in town affairs and served as a selectman and as chairman of the appeals board, budget committee and on the jury commission. He served on the school board when the Boothbay Harbor High School was built.

Mr. McKown was predeceased by his wife, Pearl, who died in 1979; and by a daughter, Barbara M. Meiklem in 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Ethel Marr and her husband Charles of West Boothbay Harbor; a son-in-law, Richard Meiklem of Norwich, Conn.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Donations may be made in Mr. McKown's memory to the charity of one's choice.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12 at the Ocean View cemetery in Boothbay.

Arrangements are under the are of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Helen R. McLean
2004-03-11

Helen R. McLean, 100, of Fort Myers, Florida, formerly of Medford and Winchester, Massachusetts, died Monday, March 1.

Born in New Brunswick, Canada on February 28, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Fenwick and Agnes (Edgar) Robinson.

She was a graduate of Mass Homeopathic Nursing School in Boston and was a retired registered nurse from New England Baptist Hospital.

Mrs. McLean was a longtime Medford resident and a member of Park Street Church in Boston for many years. She had also lived in Winchester and Boothbay and had been a resident of Fort Myers, Florida since 1990.

Mrs. McLean was the wife of the late Joseph K. McLean. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Laura Valore and Shirley Sanborn-White; and a grandson, Christian Zeiba.

Survivors include her daughter, Joan M. Zeiba of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, Vaughan Robinson of Medford, Mass.; a sister, Gertrude Bushey of Truro, Mass.; four grandchildren, Victoria, Dwight, Julianna and Sara Zeiba.; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Monday, March 8 at the McDonald Funeral Home in Wakefield, Mass. Interment was at Lakeside cemetery in Wakefield, Mass.

John A. Miner
2004-07-15

John Augustus Miner, 84, of Barter's Island, Boothbay, died peacefully at home on Friday, July 9.

Born in Salem, N.H. on October 18, 1919, he was the son of Charles Augustus and Marion Emily Miner. On August 24, 1948, he married Evelyn Payne with whom he had a son, David, and a daughter, Candice. Evelyn died on November 1, 1970.

On April 30, 1977 he married Peggy Luke Wells.

Mr. Miner was a graduate of Boston University School of Education. He taught school in Chestnut Hill, Mass., Jackson, N.H. and Weston, Conn. This was followed by a 32-year career as an executive with the National Association of Manufacturers, ending his career in charge of the western section of this country.

After his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Miner moved to Barter's Island, Boothbay, where he pursued his love of writing and researching his family genealogy.

In 1979 they took a tour group of family members who were descended from his English ancestor, Thomas Minor, back to the hometown of Chew Magna in southwestern England. During this visit the Thomas Minor Society was formed.

Over the years this society has gone back to Chew Magna several times and is a thriving group of relatives. Over his lifetime, Mr. Miner published five books of interest to the descendants of Thomas: "The Minor Family Northfield Branch," "The Lyon's Whelps," "The Minor Diaries," "The Descendants of Thomas Minor," and "The Ancestral Heritage of Descendants of Thomas Minor."

Besides his wife, he is survived by two brother, George of Franklin, N.C. and Richard of New Haven, Conn.; one sister, Barbara Wright of Agawam, Mass.; one son, David and his wife Laurie and their children, Emily and Andrew; one daughter, Candace, her husband Mark and their children Hannah, Nathaniel, John and Timothy; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory can be made if desired to St. Andrews Home Health, P.O. Box 417, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, or Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, 170 Pleasant Street, Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Julia P. Mitchell
2004-02-05

Julia Pinkham Mitchell, 93, a native of Cherryfield, died Saturday, January 31, at the Pleasant Bay Nursing Home on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

She was the wife of Stanley W. Mitchell Sr. who died December 4, 1995 in Millbridge.

Born in Cherryfield, She spent most of her working life in Boothbay Harbor, where she was employed at several local businesses, the last of which was Bob's Photo and TV, where she was also deputy town clerk for Boothbay Harbor. She was active in the Pythian Sisters and Order of the Eastern Star in Boothbay and in local church groups here and in Millbridge.

Mrs. Mitchell left Millbridge in the late 1920s and moved to New York with her husband where they resided until the early 1940s when they moved to Boothbay Harbor. They returned to Millbridge in 1980 after she and her husband retired. She moved to Witherfield, Conn. in 1997 where she lived with her son, Malcolm and wife Betty-Lou until entering the Pleasant Bay Nursing Home on Cape Cod.

She was predeceased by a son, Stanley W. Mitchell Jr. and is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Malcolm A. Mitchell and Betty-Lou of South Chatham, Mass; daughter-in-law Cora Mitchell of Danbury, Conn.; two granddaughters, Tracie Mitchell and Gina Mitchell of Glastonbury, Conn.; two grandsons, Stanley W. Mitchell III of Naperville, Ill. and James Mitchell of Hinsdale, N.H.; two brothers, Francis Pinkham and James Pinkham; four sisters, Amelia Jones, Nellie Davis, all of Maine, Edith Hanks of Mass. and Maxine Larson of N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Millbridge Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Walter B. Mohr
2004-01-08

Walter Budd Mohr, 82, died peacefully at his home in Boothbay Harbor on Saturday, December 27. He was the only child of Elizabeth Budd and Walter R. Mohr of Rutherford, New Jersey.

A decorated veteran of World War II in the European Theater, he served in the 334th Infantry Battalion. Following the war, he joined Scott Paper Company as a salesman and rose through the company to become a senior manager in the Industrial Produce Sales Division at the Philadelphia corporate headquarters. After retirement he operated his own consulting business until he moved to Maine in 1995.

An Eagle Scout, he devoted time to the Boy Scouts of America while in Media, Pennsylvania, and was a dedicated alumnus of Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

He and his wife, Marilyn, who survives him, recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Also surviving are three children: Stewart, Wendy, and Stephen, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service is planned at a later date in Christmas Cove. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Miles Home Health Care, Hospice of Maine, 35 Miles Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Arrangements are being made by Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

Frank Morang
2004-01-16

Frank C. Morang, Sr., 58, a resident of Birchwood Road in Gray, died on Friday, January 9, at Maine Medical Center in Portland following a brief illness.

He was born September 24, 1945, in Portland, the son of Charles B. and Irene A. (Moran) Morang. He was a lifelong resident of the Portland area and graduated from Portland High School with the Class of 1964.

Mr. Morang was a lifelong entrepreneur. His many business ventures included owning a restaurant, retail store, and many apartment buildings. He took pride in operating his horse and buggy service in Portland's Old Port. Frank built and remodeled numerous homes and businesses over the past four decades as owner of Frank Morang, Sr., General Contracting.

He attended The Anglican Cathedral of St. Paul of Portland and was a member of the Masonic Lodge of South Portland.

Mr. Morang will be remembered and honored for the special way he touched so many people. Frank always put the needs of others ahead of his own. His kind heart and giving nature were felt by all who knew and admired him. His generosity was also extended to others who did not have the benefit of knowing him through his quiet donations made to many Portland area families, particularly around the holidays.

He was an avid outdoorsman who especially enjoyed fishing and hunting. His favorite retreat was his camp at Moosehead Lake, and every fall he could be found hunting on Sugar Island.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Virginia L. (Ball) Morang, of Gray; a daughter, Marie E. Morang of Windham, one son, Frank C. Morang, Jr. of Falmouth; five sisters, Ella Misener, of Portland, Ruth Saucier, of Lisbon Falls, Lorraine Christensen, of Standish, andConnie Frasier and Elizabeth Keiran, both of Westbrook; one brother, John B. Morang, of Freeport; six grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, January 13, at Hay & Peabody Funeral Home, 749 Congress Street, Portland. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 14, at the Anglican Cathedral of St. Paul Church, with Reverend Lester E. York officiating. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Topsham, ME 04086-1240 in Mr. Morang's memory.

Kenneth Morey, psychic, Pennell grad
2004-07-09

Kenneth Leon Morey, 73, died Wednesday June 30, 2004.

Mr. Morey was a noted local Psychic and a 1949 graduate of Pennell Institute. He was an active member of the Pennell Alumni Association. He is survived by longtime companion Edith Dudley, of Portland; one daughter, Kathleen Morey, of Windham; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Pennell Alumni Association, 59 Skilling Road, Gray, Maine 04039.

Arrangements were by the Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Sophia Morton
2004-02-05

Sophia Morton, 94, died Wednesday, January 28 at Cove's Edge in Damariscotta.

She grew up and attended local schools on Barters Island and the Barters Island Baptist Church. She was a live-in maid in Boothbay Harbor, and also cleaned cottages and picked crabs.

Mrs. Morton was a homemaker and was a devoted mother to her 14 children; she lost six at birth.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint and always made mittens for the children every year.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest L. Morton, Sr. who died in 1978; and by a daughter, Erlene Willey in 1983.

Survivors included a brother, Edwin Harrington of Boothbay Harbor; three sons, Robert Morton of East Boothbay, Ernest Morton Jr. of Boothbay and Richard Morton of Bath; daughters, Dorothy Kirouac of Rocky Hill, Conn., Lorraine Rines of Boothbay Harbor, Joan Arsenault of Bath, Ernestine Townsend of West Buxton, and Mary Collamore Smale of Friendship; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service was held Saturday, January 31 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay, with Rev. Allen Wells-Goodwin officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Nancy D. Moss
2004-05-13

Nancy Davis Moss of Portland died peacefully Monday, April 19 at Maine Medical Center with family at her side.

She was born in Albany, New York September 9, 1924 to Wayne G. and Laura P. Davis where she attended the Girls Academy and completed her schooling at Wheelock College in Boston, Massachusetts.

Mrs. Moss came to Maine in the early 1950s to live in Cape Elizabeth where she was a mother and homemaker. She also spent most of her summers on Juniper Point, where she had many very close and long-time friends. While in Boothbay she loved to listen to the areas musicians and made friendships that have persisted over the years..

In the early '60s she moved with family to Southern Florida where she adapted well to her new environment, however her heart always remained in Maine. She spent many years living between her winter home of Boca Raton, Florida and her summer house on Juniper Point.

In 1995, she moved back, permanently to the Portland area, specifically Cape Elizabeth, where she would be closer to family and friends. She spent her final years at an assisted living facility, where she continued to make friends of not only the residents but with staff as well.

Survivors include by three sons, Michael D. Moss of Cape Elizabeth, Eben R. Moss of Glen, New Hampshire and Ian L. Moss of Chocorua, New Hampshire; and two grandchildren, Ben and Jess Moss.

It was Mrs. Moss's wish that she rest in her beloved Boothbay Harbor where a family service will be held in the spring.

Arrangements made by the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road in South Portland.
