Robert M. Maxcy
2006-03-16

Fire Chief Robert M. Maxcy, 76, of Waldoboro, died with his family by his side after a long illness on Thursday evening, March 9 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Born November 17, 1929 in Thomaston, he was a son of the late Earl T. and Ruth (Lermond) Maxcy.

He was a graduate of Thomaston High School and served honorably with the U.S. Air Force from 1947 to 1950, attaining the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

On November 10, 1950 he married the former Muriel "Mickey" A. Parlin.

In 1964 he was appointed chief of the Waldoboro Fire Department, a position he held for nearly 42 years until the time of his death. Over the years he worked at B.I.W., was a patrol officer for the Waldoboro Police Department, did excavation work with his brother Earle "Doc" Maxcy. For 11 years he was a custodian for the Lincoln County Courthouse; and manager of the Waldoboro, Friendship and Cushing Transfer Station until his retirement.

Chief Maxcy was a member of the Waldoboro Firemen's Association, Knox County Firemen's Association, Maine State Federation of Firefighters and the Lincoln County Fire Chiefs.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed time with his grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

Survivors include five children, Deborah McLaughlin and her husband Regginald of Richmond, Marcia A. Maxcy and her husband John Lamoureux of Wilton, Marc A. Maxcy and Beverly Michaud of Dover Foxcroft, Dee Maxcy and her partner K. Bryan Parker of Tremont, and Darryl Maxcy and his wife Teresa of Richmond; one brother, Harlan Maxcy and his wife Myra of Friendship; one sister Marilyn Levansaler and her husband Cedric of Yarmouth; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of more than 53 years who died March 21, 2004; and a brother, Earle "Doc" Maxcy who died in 2005.

A funeral service was held Tueday, March 14, at the First Baptist Church of Waldoboro in Waldoboro with Pastor Thomas Rawley officiating. Interment followed in the Orff's Corner cemetery in Waldoboro.

Arrangements were under the direction of Coast of Maine Cremation and Funeral Service, Waldoboro.

Should friends so desire donations may be made in Chief Maxcy's memory to the Robert M. Maxcy Fire Displacement Fund, for residents of the town of Waldoboro, P.O. Box J, Waldoboro, ME 04572.

James D. McColl
2006-03-23

James D. McColl, 76, of Winthrop, passed away on Tuesday, March 14 with his family by his side.

Born in Bayonne, N.J. on September 16, 1929, he was the son of James D. McColl Sr. and Jesse Maxwell McColl.

On August 11, 1951, he married Nancy Lewis. They were married for 54 years.

Mr. McColl graduated from Pennsylvania Military College in Chester, Penn., as an officer, and was a veteran of the Korean War where he earned the Bronze Star. He became licensed in both Civil and Environmental Engineering at Pennsylvania Military College and Drexel University.

For many years he worked with the engineering firm, Roy F. Weston, of West Chester, Penn. In the late 1970s, he and his wife purchased Pierce Marine in Boothbay Harbor, where they stayed for seven years. He then became the director of Public Works for the town of Bedford, N.H. until his retirement to Winthrop.

He taught his grandchildren how to row, fish and appreciated the beauty of the lake.

Mr. McColl was a member of the Delaware County Board of Trustees and also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy McColl of Augusta; one son, Bruce James McColl and his fianc'e Cindy Bickett of Wiscasset; his daughter, Ellen McColl Messier, her husband Kevin P. Messier; two grandchildren, Lianna Ruth Messier and Ian James Messier, and his favorite dog, Jesse James, all of Topsham; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Christine Olinski.

A memorial service was held at The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Brunswick, on Friday, March 17. A gathering was held afterwards at the home of Ellen Messier.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Home Care & Hospice, 150 Dresden Ave., Gardiner, ME 04345 in Mr. McColl's memory.

Cameron McLeod Jr.
2006-02-23

Cameron MacLeod Jr., 88, of Boothbay Harbor, died peacefully on the evening of Tuesday, January 17 at Brentwood Manor Rehab Center.

Born in Westover, Mass., he was the son of Cameron and Mary Morris MacLeod. He was the second of five children, surrounded by four sisters.

When he was a young child, his family moved to Berwyn, Penn., where he attended the Montgomery School in Philadelphia and spent his senior year at the Holderness School in Plymouth, N.H.

During World War II, he was a member of the American and British Field Service where he was an ambulance driver. He received commendations for his work helping evacuate victims from Bergin-Belson and Auschwitz concentration camps.

After the war he operated his grandmother's dairy farm in Berwyn, Penn., and on June 3, 1946, he married Beatrice Endicott in Worcester, Mass. They lived in Berwyn, Penn., and then moved to Glenmore, Penn., where they bought "Highland Farm' and made a business of organic farming, raising sheep for wool and meat.

At age 40, he changed careers and started as a warehouse supervisor at Morris Wheeler and Co. in Philadelphia, retiring at 58 as vice president in charge of operations.

He enjoyed skiing, woodworking, golfing, fishing, and canoeing.

In the last few years Mr. and Mrs. MacLeod lived at St. Andrews Village.

Survivors include his wife, Bea MacLeod; a son Cameron III; daughter Beatrice (Teenie) McLeod; niece, Susan Endicott; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Edith L. Mitchell
2006-02-23

Edith Beaumont Looker Mit-chell, 85, of Warner, N.H., died Thursday, February 9, at Concord Hospital of a heart attack.'

Born in White Plains, N.Y., on February 19, 1920, to Col. Reginald Earle Looker and Edith Beaumont (Applegate) Looker, she was the daughter of an author, editor and writer for Franklin D. Roosevelt, and a Johns Hopkins trained World War II Red Cross Nurse.

Mrs. Mitchell attended Northampton School for Girls (now, Williston-Northampton) in Massachusetts, and Connecticut College, then worked in Washington, D.C. as a White House news analyst for the Truman administration.'

On October 4, 1947, she married Arthur Hayne Mitchell, Jr., in Alexandria, Va., and subsequently lived in Greenwood and Alexandria, Va.' After his death in August 1959 she began a 30-year career with the National Trust for Historic Preservation as head docent for Woodlawn Plantation in Mount Vernon, moving to Warner in 1997.'She will be remembered for her inspiration and commitment to the creation of the family bookstore in Warner, and she cherished her time spent on Barter's Island.

Survivors include two sons, Henry Mitchell of Warner, N.H. and Dr. Arthur Mitchell and wife Monica of Burke, Va.; a daughter, Katharine Mitchell Nevins and husband, Neil of Warner, N.H.; seven grandchildren are Katharine, Andrew and Thomas Mitchell of Burke, Va., and Lane, Matthias, Colin and Klare Nevins of Warner, N.H.;'a sister, Katharine Looker Hyde of Vesuvius, Va.; a niece, Rose Cavalca of Charlottesville, Va.; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Mitchell of Mount Joy, Penn.; and her beloved companion, Charles Stonemetz of Trevett.'

A family celebration of her life will be held in Virginia at a later date.' Interment will be at Arlington National cemetery beside her husband.

Barbara Monty dies
2006-02-24

Barbara N. Monty,78, of Gray, died Saturday at her home surrounded by family.

Barbara was born March 1, 1928, in South Royalton, Vermont, the daughter of Raymond and Doris Smith. Barbara married Anthony Monty on March 1, 1954, her birthday. She worked as a supervisor at Health-Tex in Portland for over 30 years. She loved camping and looked forward to her yearly family trip to Bar Harbor. For many years she and her husband Anthony vacationed in Sanibel Island in Florida and took trips in their travel trailer to upstate New York and throughout Canada. Family gatherings were a time of a great amount of food that she loved to cook. Nobody ever went hungry. Barbara loved to shop and spoil her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Anthony J. Monty.

Surviving are one daughter; Judy A. Bragdon, of Gray; two stepsons, Richard and Anthony Montefesco; three granddaughters, four step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and 7 step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Chamberlain, of New Gloucester; one brother; Richard Smith, of Saginaw, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held last Tuesday at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray. A graveside service was held on Wednesday in New Calvary cemetery in South Portland. Mgsr. Robert Lavoie officiated.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Albert Morrell passes away, brother of Louise Knapp
2006-02-24

Albert E. Morrell, 74, of North Anson, passed away February 15 while vacationing in Florida. His family was at his side.

He was born July 13, 1931, in Westbrook, the son of Clifford and Fannie (Plummer) Morrell. Albert grew up in Windham, and always had many stories to share about his childhood days of living on the farm, raising chickens, collecting scrap metal for the war effort and visiting with his grandfather.

During the Korean War, Albert served his country in Germany as a member of the U.S. Army.

Albert married Marjorie Paulo on July 5, 1958, in Masonfield, Ohio. They moved to North Anson in 1962. He was a long-time member and past Master of the Northern Star Lodge #28, a past Patron of Mt. Bigelow Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Minerva Chapter Ordeer of Eastern Star and a long-time attendee at the United Methodist Church in North Anson. He had been a Boy Scout leader and chaperone for many Scouting camping trips. In his retirement, Albert enjoyed volunteering his time at the Madison Food Cupboard and building houses for Habitat for Humanity.

He loved gardening, reading and could fix almost anything. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his son, Tom, and his wife Karen, of Embden; his daughter, Jan Schutte, and her husband Roger and their children, Kayla and Nicole, of Oakland; his daughter, Paula Morrell, of St. Petersburg; a sister, Louise Knapp, and her husband Warren, of Gray; a brother, Richard, and his wife Janice, of Windham; a brother William, of Danville; 11 nephews, eight nieces and several cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A funeral service was held on Thursday in North Anson. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish to do so may make donations to Northern Star Lodge, P.O. Box 44, North Anson, ME 04958;; United Mehtodist Church, P.O. Box 97, North Anson, ME 04958; or Habitat for Humanity, attn. Treasurer, P.O. Box 1972, Waterville, ME 04903.

Dorothy W. Morrison
2006-02-09

Dorothy Wills Morrison, 94, of Portland, died Saturday, February 4, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Portland in 1911 and raised in Auburn, she was the daughter of Asa and Florence Wills.

She was a graduate of both Edward Little High School and Bates College. She began her lengthy teaching career at Auburn School of Commerce then moved to Kingfield where she taught at Stanley High School. While teaching, she also spent countless hours assisting her husband who was a pharmacist and owned Kingfield Pharmacy.

After selling the pharmacy, she and her family moved to Winslow where she taught at Winslow High School. Later they moved to Ogunquit.

Upon her husband's death, she moved to Bristol and taught at the local high school. She then moved to Boothbay Harbor where she completed her teaching career at Boothbay Region High School. During her 43 years of teaching, she also coached cheerleading and drama, winning many state drama competitions.

As President of Maine Federation of Women's Club, she had a monthly radio broadcast with WGAN. When she lived in Winslow, she was made an honorary member of the VFW Auxiliary and helped to raise funds for the Winslow Fire Department through baking, craft and catered dinners.

Mrs. Morrison was predeceased by her husband, Fred, to whom she was married for 27 years until his death in 1963.

Survivors include her daughter, Jean Morrison Strollo and son-in-law Anthony of Pembroke, N.H.; two sons, Barry W. Morrison and daughter-in-law Rhonda of Las Vegas, Nev., and Bradford W. Morrison and daughter-in-law Elizabeth of South Portland; grandchildren, Kara Niemi, Terry, Christina, Kenneth, Patrick and Brittany Morrison.

A celebration of her life will be held at Peoples United Methodist Church, 310 Broadway, South Portland at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 10. A graveside service will be held in the spring in Kingfield.

Arrangements are through Hobbs Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Alzheimer's Association of Maine, 163 Lancaster Street Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101 or an Animal Refuge League of your choice.

Carroll E. Morse
2006-02-09

Carroll E. Morse, 88, of Brunswick, formerly a longtime resident of Woolwich, died Friday, February 3, at a Brunswick hospital.

Born in Bath on December 27, 1917, he was a son of Samuel A. and Mildred (Rogers) Morse Sr.

Mr. Morse attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School in 1936. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono as a mechanical engineer and moved to New York City where he was employed as a mechanical engineer. In 1944 he entered the United States Air Force.

On May 7, 1955 he married Caroline Anderson in Malden, Mass.

He was employed at Central Maine Power Company as a mechanical engineer retiring in 1982. At the latter end of his career with Central Maine he oversaw the beginning phases of Maine Yankee in Wiscasset.

On September 28, 1989 he married Laura McCullough in Utah. He was a longtime member and elder of the Woolwich Wiscasset Baptist Church, treasurer and secretary of Riverside cemetery Association in Woolwich for 32 years, served on the Woolwich School Board, Past President of Morse Alumni and the Chapter 89 of the National Association of Watch and Clock members where he served all positions including Past President and was a Scout Master.

Mr. Morse enjoyed restoring antique clocks, books, gardening, bird watching, boats, lighthouses and touring the state taking pictures of tower clocks. One of his special accomplishments was being highly involved in all aspects of the tower clock at the Woolwich Town Office.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Caroline Morse on December 17, 1977; and by one brother, Samuel Austin Morse Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Morse of Brunswick; three sons, Elliott Morse of Woolwich, Nathan Morse and his wife Laura, and Virgil E. Anderson and his wife Genia, all of Bath; two daughters, Lorelle Thompson of Brunswick, and Sherille Masters and her husband David of Lititz, Penn.; one brother, Robert Morse of Ellensburg, Wash.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at the Woolwich Wiscasset Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 7, with Pastor Roger Blundell officiating. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery in Woolwich in the spring.

A gathering of family and friends followed the service in the church fellowship hall.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Woolwich Wiscasset Baptist Church, 15 Fellowship Drive, Woolwich, ME 04579.

Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street in Bath.

Kevin C. Murray
2006-01-19

Kevin C. Murray, 50, of Boothbay, died Monday, January 9 on the Columbia River in Oregon while performing his duties as pilot.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on May 22, 1955, he was a son of Leon and Phyllis Pinkham Murray. In 1973 he graduated from Boothbay Region High School and was a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy with a degree in nautical sciences and an unlimited Third Mate's License.

Mr. Murray began his career working on towing vessels, towing semi-submersible oil rigs in and out of the Gulf of Mexico. After a few years he moved on to captain of a 700-foot oil tanker, the Blue Ridge. He held an unlimited Master's license to allow him to captain any size vessel in any waters of the world.

Because of his extensive experience on the Pacific West Coast from San Francisco to Alaska, the Columbia River Bar Pilots Association approached him to join their organization. The Columbia River is one of the most dangerous rivers in the world. Kevin joined the association in 2004 and became a resident of Ilwaco, Washington in 2005, coming home to Boothbay on his off time.

He was a member of the Boston Marine Society, an association limited to those who have commanded vessels. The Boston Marine Society has been serving the marine community since 1754, and is the oldest association of its kind in the world. He also belonged to the Council of American Master Mariners, and he loved his dogs and animals.

Survivors include his childhood sweetheart and wife of 27 years, Lori Stetson Murray of Boothbay; mother, Phyllis Murray of Boothbay Harbor; mother-in-law, Martha Stetson of Boothbay; two brothers, Coneth Murray and his wife Donna of Southport and Terry Murray and his wife Pam of Boothbay Harbor; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Rebecca Stetson Lamb and her husband Scott of Standish; nephews, Ben Murray of Portland, Chad Murray and Shawn Murray, both of Boothbay; nieces, Beck Murray Richards of Yarmouth, Kristen Murray Goslin of Boothbay, Beth Norman Belfesa of Nyack, N.Y., Christine Norman Benider of Yarmouth, and Rachel Lamb Zipperer of Standish; several grandnieces, grandnephews, and two godchildren, Holly Hodgdon and Weldon Larkin both of Southport

A celebration of Mr. Murray's life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Boothbay on Sunday, January 29. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to any of the following, Fisherman's Memorial, P.O. Box 304, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538; Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O.
