Rupert Neily Jr.
2000-06-29

Rupert Neily Jr., 82, of West Boothbay Harbor died at his home early Saturday morning, June 24, after a long illness.

Born in New York City on November 21, 1917, he was the son of professional musicians Rupert Neily and Anne McAdams Neily of Cape Elizabeth and South Portland.

Mr. Neily attended South Portland High School and graduated from Governor Dummer Academy in 1936 where he was captain of the boxing team and a member of the track and football teams. He entered Springfield College to prepare for a professional career in sports. In 1937 he transferred to Bowdoin College where he graduated in the class of 1941.

While at Bowdoin earning a B.S. degree, he helped earn his keep by teaching boxing to local youths. During summer breaks he worked in boys camps teaching swimming, sailing and elementary navigation. He attended a year of Cornell Medical School before entering the Navy to serve in World War II.

In November 1942 he married the former Elizabeth Anne Bisbee of Cape Elizabeth, following in the footsteps of his younger brother, Clark, who had already married "Betty" Bisbee's sister, Eleanor.

Mr. Neily served as a Lieutenant aboard destroyers in both the European and Pacific theaters of the war. Beside convoy duty, he participated in the invasions of Italy and France. He received a commendation from Admiral Harold Stark for his courageous action off the Normandy beachhead in June 1944. As a veteran he regularly participated in Memorial Day services in the Boothbay Region, eventually sharing the role of parade marshal with the late Arnie Brewer of Boothbay Harbor.

After the war, he moved with his family to the Boothbay Region, a place that had become dear to his heart from his collegiate days teaching sailing for a boys camp in East Boothbay.

He began his civilian career working with Dr. Phil Gregory to establish the first physical therapy department at St. Andrews Hospital. He also began assisting Walter Buzzell at his health resort in Boothbay, teaching boxing and swimming.

Mr. Neily often described himself as a "restless native," referring to his several roles as father of five children, small business owner, Republican activist and prominent participant in many community organizations and causes. Certainly his most cherished volunteer work has been with the Boothbay Region YMCA, an organization that he and others created over 40 years ago when Walter Buzzell's Health Resort became a YMCA day camp for the area's children. He served on the Board of Trustees where he chaired the Program Committee. He especially enjoyed being an aerobics instructor for the early morning exercise class.

His vocational life was spent as a self-employed businessman spec-ializing in sales and marketing. He discovered his calling in 1947 when he chaired the planning committee for the second Fisherman's Fair in East Boothbay. This led to a paid position to direct the second Rockland Seafood Festival. These experiences became the foundation for establishing a series of small businesses: an advertising and public relations firm, R. Neily Associates from 1948 to 1957, Boothbay Harbor Boat Sales and then Maine Coast Boat Sales from 1947 to 1968 and Mainco Realty from 1968 to 1983. For the past 15 years he specialized in small business consulting and real estate sales.

He was an ardent champion of the economic health of the mid coast. He was a founder and president of the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce and a former president of the Lincoln County Board of Realtors. Last fall Mr. Neily was recognized by the Chamber and the Realtors for his outstanding record of life-long service to the Boothbay community.

An active member of the Republican Party, Rupe served 15 years as finance chairman for the Lincoln County Republican Committee. In January 1993 Gov. McKernan appointed him Treasurer of Lincoln County, and in 1994 he was elected to a four-year term as Treasurer, serving three years until illness forced him to resign.

He loved the outdoors and was very pleased that he was able to pass this passion on to his family. He was fond of sailing, tending his rose garden and always looked forward to visiting his daughter Sandra's family at their camp in Greenville to hunt, fish and explore the lakes, rivers and scenic landscape of this wilder part of Maine.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Neily; a son, Rupert III, of Hallowell; four daughters, Elizabeth of Salt Lake City, Utah, Sandra of Falmouth, Kathy of New York City and Joy of Oakland, California; three grandchildren; his brother Clark; and many members of his extended family.

A private memorial service for members of the family will held next week at the Methodist Church in East Boothbay. For those who wish, contributions can be made in Mr. Neily's memory to the Boothbay Region YMCA, P.O. Box 500, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.
