Harriet G. Nana Noyes
2000-10-05

NORWAY - Harriet G. Nana Noyes, 82, of Norway died Monday, October 2, 2000 at Norway Rehabilitation & Living Center.

She was born in Auburn on December 3, 1917 the daughter of Hartley P. and Winnafred E. Johnson Greenleaf. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1935. She had been a housewife and mother.

She married Francis E. Noyes on March 3, 1936, he died May 10, 1985.

She was a Past Matron of Purity Chapter O.E.S., State Director, North American Family Campers Association, former Secretary, New England Charter Member, 1st woman President Pine Tree Chapter #33 of North American Family Campers Association, a member of the Oxford Congregational Church and the Oxford Fireman's Auxilliary.

She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Treadwell of Minot and Margaret Meserve of South Paris; two sons, Hartley Bud Noyes and Erland Bing Noyes both of Auburn; one brother, Reginald Greenleaf of Hartford, 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and a special niece, Gwen Brooks of Farmington, NH.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Hartley P. Greenleaf, Jr., Ernest Greenleaf and Henry Greenleaf.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 6, at 11 a.m. at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris.

Interment will be in the Riverside Annex Cemetery, South Paris.

Family and friends may attend visiting hours on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Donations in her memory can be made to Oxford Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 273, Oxford, ME 04270 or the North American Family Campers Association.

Martin F. Needham
2001-11-01

Martin F. Needham of Oakland, Maine, died on Sunday, October 21 at his home.

Born July 9, 1927 in Old Town, he was the son of Stanley F. and Madeline (Sweeney) Needham. In 1945 he graduated from Old Town High School, the Maine Maritime Academy in 1947, and in 1951 from the University of Maine at Orono.

He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1954. He earned an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Needham enjoyed classical music and was an accomplished pianist. He published two books, The Nimble Thimble in 1993 and The Duck Book in 1973. He has also written several novels, plays and short stories.

Upon retirement, he pursued his writing career and "entertained" tourists while working at a gift shop in Boothbay Harbor.

Mr. Needham was predeceased by his brother, Richard.

Survivors include his sister, Jane of Windsor; two brothers, Robert of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Michael of Windsor; former wife, Franciska Needham; four children and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the Second Congregational Church, Newcastle on Saturday, October 27.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made for the purchase of musical instruments for students in S.A.D. #47: Office of the Superintendent, Martin Needham Memorial Fund, S.A.D. #47, 47 Heath Street, Oakland, ME 04963.

Rita G. Newcomb
2001-05-24

Rita Garvey Newcomb of Boothbay Harbor died Tuesday, May 22 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She was the widow of Malcolm (Mac) E. Newcomb who predeceased her on April 14, 2000.

Born in Belmont, Mass., she was the daughter of James and Gladys Fogwell Garvey. In 1942 she graduated from Belmont High School. She worked for Western Union on a temporary assignment that brought her to Boothbay Harbor. She met Malcolm E. Newcomb here and they were married for 45 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Newcomb moved to Mystic, Connecticut where they raised their family. In 1998 they returned to Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Newcomb was a communicant of the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Boothbay Harbor and a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She enjoyed reading, sewing, crossword puzzles, loved plants and traveling around the country to see her children and grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Newcomb was predeceased by one brother, James Garvey; and one sister, Gladys Tipping.

Survivors include three sons, Malcolm Oliver Newcomb of Nevada, James Philip Newcomb of Carthage, New York, and Jason Andrew Newcomb of Mystic, Connecticut; one daughter, Glad Prather of Manassas, Virginia; and eight grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, May 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 25 at 10 a.m. at the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Atlantic Avenue, Boothbay Harbor. Rev. Raymond Picard will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Shirlie B. Nichols
2001-07-12

Shirlie B. (Brewer) Nichols, 77, of Arlington, Mass., died Sunday, July 8, at Winchester Hospital in Winchester, Mass. She was the wife of the late Francis Russell Hart Nichols.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on August 5, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Cyrus and Leta (Burnham) Brewer. She was raised and educated in Maine. She was a member of the Knight of Pythias in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Nichols was a popular radio personality and was the hostess of "Voice of the Turtle" that was on the air in Boston and Miami. She was also a Latin dance instructor.

For many years she was very active in a number of humanity organizations in the Boston and Miami area including the American Red Cross and the United Fund. She was a registered member of the social register in Boston and was known for her artistic abilities and expert seamstress abilities.

For the past 15 years she resided in Arlington and previously spent her summers in Boston and wintered in Miami.

Survivors include a daughter, Daphne Weld Nichols of Arlington; one sister, Leta M. McGee of Shrewsbury, Mass.; a brother, Mahlon S. Brewer of Grafton, Mass; and three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Francis Russell Hart Nichols II.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the Bigelow Chapel of Mount Auburn Cemetery, Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge, Mass. on Sunday, July 14 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, Mass.

Isabelle M. Nichols
2001-08-16

Isabelle M. Nichols, 84, died August 3 at Kenneston Hospital in Marietta, Georgia.

Born in Augusta on June 30, 1917, she was the daughter of Raoul and Rose D'Auteuil. In 1938 she graduated from Cony High School in Augusta.

In 1976 Mrs. Nichols and her husband Bryon moved to Barter's Island to spend their retirement years. Winters were spent at their winter home in Fort Myers Beach, Florida.

During her working career, Mrs. Nichols was affiliated with several Augusta-area businesses in the capacity of office management. She was also a lifetime volunteer for many social and charitable causes.

Survivors include her husband, Byron Nichols; four children, Jeffrey of Marietta, Georgia, Janis of Portland, Oregon,, James of Augusta and John of Oquossoc, Maine; and one brother, Emery of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Burial will be at the Maine Veterans cemetery in Augusta at a date not yet determined.

Wesley W. Nichols Jr.
2001-08-16

Wesley W. Nichols Jr., 65, of Wiscasset, died Friday, August 10 at his home.

Born in Buffalo, New York, he was a son of Wesley W. Nichols Sr. and Edith Adair Nichols.

He received a bachelors degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1959; a masters of divinity from Boston University in 1963; a masters in pastoral counseling from Boston University in 1966; and a masters in education from Northeastern University (Rehabilitation Administration) in 1972. Additionally, he was State of Maine certified in the areas of special education and guidance. He served as chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserves for seven years, reaching the rank of Captain.

In 1969, he married Mary-Jo Ridlon of Kezar Falls in Dorchester, Mass. The couple moved with their children to Maine in 1975, settling in Wiscasset in 1983.

An exceptionally kind and compassionate man, Mr. Nichols spent his career caring for and working with those with special needs. He worked as an Administrator for Goodwill Industries, Hayden School for Boys, Dorchester, Mass.; United Methodist Church, Folts Home for the Elderly, Herkimer, N.Y.; and Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care in Rockland.

In the early 1980s, he also worked as an area reporter for the Lincoln County News. From 1988 until his retirement in 1997, he worked as a counselor and special education instructor for the Maine public school system.

In retirement, he continued operating his furniture repair business. One of his chief projects in retirement was to supply chew toys and tennis balls for the animals awaiting adoption at the Lincoln County Animal Shelter.

His family will remember him as a man of quiet strength, endless patience, and eternal love.

Surviving are his wife, Martha-Jo Nichols of Wiscasset; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph B. and Julie M. Nichols of Falls Church, Va.; a daughter, Sara L. Nichols of Wiscasset; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sally and William Porter and Gayle and John Murphy, all of Lockport, N.Y.; ten nieces and nephews; and a German shepherd named Bear.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, August 15 at Mayo and Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset.

The family requests that donations in his honor be sent to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Atlantic Highway, North Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements were by Mayo and Daigle Funeral Home of Wiscasset.

Jack H. Neeson
2001-04-26

Jack H. Neeson, 82, summer resident of Spruce Head island since 1952 and year-round resident since 1984, died unexpectedly April 19. born July 31, 1918, in Wilminton, Del. he was the son of John Henry and Edith McHenry Neeson.

He attended the University of Virginia and University of Delaware, from which he received his B.A. in 1940. He enrolled in the Virginia Episcopal Seminary in Alexandria, Va., and graduated magna cum laude with an M.A. in Theology in January 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marine, was went to radio school on Gallup Island in Boston Harbor and then served on Liberty ships as a radio operator until January 1946. He saw service in Italy and on D-Day his ship delivered soldiers for the Normandy invasion. He later served in the Pacific.

Having earlier purchased his family’s summer cottage at Spruce Head Island, Mr. Neeson returned to Maine in May 1953 and worked as a copywriter and announcer for radio station WRKD in Rockland. During that period, he directed plays with the Knox county Theater Guild.

Mr. Neeson is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Graham Neeson of Spruce Head Island; son John David Neeson and his wife Barbara Waltz Neeson; one granddaughter, Johanna Neeson, all of Edgecomb.

A Eucharistic Celebration was held at 2 p.m., Wed., April 25, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Six White Street, Rockland. The Reverend Dr. Ralph M. Moore will officiate. Interment will be in the Ocean View Cemetery, South Thomaston, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the South Thomaston Ambulance, c/o Pat Dougherty, Dublin Road, South Thomaston, 04858 or to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 457, Rockland 04841. Funeral arrangements are with the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.

Gwen White Nelson
2001-03-29

Gwen White Nelson, 71, Waldoboro died shortly after being admitted to the emergency department of Miles Memorial Hospital on Sun., March 26, suffering from complications arising from surgery a week earlier.

Gwen was born Jan., 15, 1930 in Agawam, Mass., to Ethyl Reid White and Howard White.

She spent most of her youth in Franklin and Walpole, Mass. She started a one-room school in Franklin and graduated from Walpole High School. She also attended Northfield, Chamberlain and University of Massachusetts.

Dynamic and hard working, Gwen was recognized as a Department Manager at Filenes in Wellesley, Mass., during the early 1950’s and in the late 50’s, served as Publicity and Merchandising Manager at the Kendall Company in Walpole, Mass. Throughout the 60’s she was an Advertising Manager for the Textile Division at Kendall in New York City.

Married to Arthur Nelson in 1969, she was an active gardener in Franklin, Mass., during the 70’s and for the past 15 years has lived in Waldoboro while renovating a sturdy old farmhouse. Devoted to preserving nature and open spaces, she leaves a 20 acre parcel of mature pine in Franklin, Mass. to the Nature Conservancy, directing that this be kept forever wild and to be known as Reid Memorial Conservation Area.

Like-minded individuals are encouraged to make a small donation to the Nature Conservancy at 14 Maine St., Brunswick, 04011 or in any state where you may live.

A gentle loving person herself, Gwen has asked that flower lovers send a cheerful bouquet to brighten the heart of any shut-in who is not expecting one.

This cheerful and helpful lady will be sorely missed by her many friends.

She is survived by her husband Arthur Nelson of Waldoboro.

Basically shy and quiet, Gwen has also requested that there be no formal service.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Hester C. Newhall
2001-01-11

Hester C. Newhall, 93, Damariscotta, went on to a better life on Jan. 8. born on Oct. 20, 1907, in Malden, Mass., she eventually married in the same house she was born.

In her time, she was an active member of the Sheepscott Congregational Church and the Ladies Circle. She lived in Alna until about 8 years ago, when she moved to the Schooner Cove apartments in Damariscotta.

She recently fell and fractured her hip, which caused her to move again. This time to Chase Point in Damariscotta. There is where she spent the last days of her life.

She was predeceased by her husband, George Newhall, in 1985. She is survived by a special friend, who was with her to the end, Linda Verney of Sheepscott; one niece, Shirley Newhall and family of Londonderry, VT; one nephew, Leavitt Beals and family of Plymouth, Mass.; two grand-nephews, Jeff Newhall and family of Worchester, Mass.; and Marc Beals and family of Middleboro, Mass.; as well as many friends.

Graveside service Alna cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta.
