Ralph C. Norwood II
2004-07-15

Ralph C. Norwood, II, 74, of South Bristol, went to be with the Lord Monday, July 12.

Born in Boston April 25, 1930, he was the son of Ralph C. and Josephine (Emmens) Norwood I. For the first 14 years of his life, he lived with his family at the Boston Lighthouse, where his father served as lighthouse keeper.

After coming to South Bristol in 1944, he attended school here and was graduated from Lincoln Academy, Newcastle, in the Class of 1949. Mr. Norwood spent all of his life working in and around the sea, a job that included lobstering, seining and trolling. Even in his retirement he still loved striper fishing and operating his schooner, which he had at Windjammer Days in Boothbay Harbor just this year. An art lover all of his life, he very recently became serious with oil painting, and had sold three paintings.

A man actively involved with his faith, he attended both the Woolwich-Wiscasset Baptist Church and the South Bristol Union Church. He also loved music, and for years sang and played at several area nursing homes.

Mr. Norwood is survived by his wife of 54 years, Katherine (Poole) Norwood of South Bristol; his mother, age 99, of East Boothbay; and two sons, Ralph C. Norwood III, and his wife Esther, and David P. Norwood and his wife Laurie, both of South Bristol.; four sisters, Priscilla Reese of Hingham, Mass., Wanda Bridges of Springfield, Mass., Faye Achor of Boothbay Harbor, and Georgia Emerson of East Boothbay; one brother, Robert Norwood of East Boothbay; ten grandchildren; seven great-grand-children and was predeceased by three brothers, Bruce, LaForrest and Dexter.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 15 at the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street in Damariscotta. Pastors Gerald Morrison and Jeff Belcher will co-officiate. He will be laid to rest at the West Bristol Cemetery, Walpole.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Strong Funeral Home and Memorial Center in Damariscotta.

Francis L. Nadeau
2005-09-01

Francis Laurel Nadeau, 83, formerly of Wiscasset, died in Winthrop on Saturday, August 27.

Born August 23, 1922, in Ashland, he was a son of William and Elva Duplisea Nadeau. The family moved to Howland when he was two. He attended local schools in Howland.

Mr. Nadeau served in the United States Air Force as an air mechanic on Saipan.

He returned home and worked for many years as a welder at Bath Iron Works. He also had his own business selling and repairing chain saws in his home in Wiscasset.

On May 12, 1942, he married Leah Nash, and they just recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary. He was an avid salmon fly fisherman and loved hunting and camping.

He was predeceased by a brother, Lawrence Nadeau; and by a sister-in-law, Sylvia Nadeau.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Leah Nash Nadeau of Winthrop; son, Timothy Nadeau and his wife Carol of Lisbon; daughter, Susan Bixby and her husband John F. Bixby Jr. of Buckfield; two brothers, Raymond Nadeau of Bath, and Millard Nadeau of Dunedin, Fla.; one sister, Geneva Nash and her husband Elroy of Tenants Harbor; four grandchildren, Rachel Freese, Mark Nadeau, John F. Bixby III, and Rebecca Martin; six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Tuesday, August 30 at the Hall & Bibber Funeral Home in Thomaston with Rev. Walden Chandler officiating. Burial followed in the Ridge cemetery in Martinsville.

Arrangements were entrusted to Hall & Bibber Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Thomaston.

Roy W. Nelson Jr.
2005-06-02

Roy William Nelson Jr., of Boothbay, died unexpectedly at his home Monday, May 30.

Born in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Roy and Thelma Nelson, who predeceased him.

He attended Boothbay region schools and was a graduate of the class of 1971.

Mr. Nelson was an avid athlete, playing basketball and baseball. His love of sports continued through his life, as he was a proud and loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox. He also loved hunting and fishing, and going up north with his wife, Kareen and extended family.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Kareen Anne Nelson; his son, A.J. Nelson and girlfriend Jen Adams; daughter, Ryan Anne Nelson and fiancé Trevor Morin; his "special shining star," granddaughter Victoria Morin; nephew Jeffery; sisters, Rebecca Lewis and fiancé, Edgar Lewis of Boothbay, and Barbara Pinkham and Kathy Nelson of Boothbay Harbor; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mardelle Michael of Saco, Tracy and Neil Grover of Boothbay, Zandy and John Long of Boothbay, Robert and Charlene Rogers of Edgecomb, Ken and Yoko Eimen of Florida and Alan and Lori Eimen of Boothbay Harbor; his aunt and uncle, Mary and Burton Grant of Edgecomb; aunts, Shirley Caddy of Massachusetts, Shirley Hirsch and Helen Davis; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Gary Cunningham.

Mr. Nelson was employed at the Bath Iron Works at the Harding's location.

A celebration of his life will be held at Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay on Friday, June 3 at 2 p.m., followed by a reception with the family at the Boothbay Fire Station.

John B. Nelson
2005-11-24

John Baldwin Nelson, Geologist, 55, of Yarmouth, died Monday, November 14.

Born on December 20, 1949 in Orange, New Jersey, he was the son of Alfred Nelson of Farmington, Conn. and Jane Haselton Nelson of Southport.

Through his lifelong pursuit of science, he became a Ph.D. candidate in Geology at the University of Maine, as well as receiving several other degrees including a Masters in Geology from the University of Mississippi.

He was a member of many prestigious organizations including the Geological Society of America and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, for which he was recognized nationally for several papers written on glacial geology in the Northeast.

Mr. Nelson was a veracious learner with a special interest in all aspects of the physical world; Earth, Nature and the Ocean. One of his favorite places was his family home in West Boothbay Harbor. His often eclectic experience in the world led him to such positions as Harbor Master in Freeport. He also found camaraderie through his brotherhood with the Kappa Delta Phi fraternity.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Bernard Nelson; his sons, Christian Andrew Nelson, James Erskine Nelson, and Robert Eben Nelson and their mother, Janice MacCormack Zarco; step-sons, Keith Landon Pulsifer, David Andrew Pulsifer, and Gregory Michael Pulsifer; two sisters, Cynthia Nelson Pitcher of Worcester, Mass. and Grace Nelson Lance of Jericho, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were from noon to 2 p.m., on Saturday, November 19 with the service following immediately after, at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, ME 04096.

Robert Niss
2005-08-12

Robert Sharples Niss, 56, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 4, at Maine Medical Center after battling courageously for years over a debilitating illness.

Mr. Niss lived on West Gray Road for many years.

Born in Belfast on March 23, 1949, and raised in Bath, he graduated from Proctor Academy in Andover, NH, and from Colorado College in 1971 with a degree in journalism.

He came from a long line of writers and historians, among them Maine's own Samuel Eliot Morison and Jacob Abbot, and had been putting pen to paper since the age of 8 for his summer camp's weekly newspaper.

For several years, he wrote fondly for the "Back Forty", a column in the Maine Sunday Telegram. It was a tremendous outlet for his most beloved pastimes: camping, paddling, hiking and so forth. Numerous awards were bestowed upon him from the AP, UPI, FBI and more.

We have lost someone special who no longer feels the pain of a disease that robbed him of years of his life.

He was predeceased by his mother, Abby S. Niss.

He is survived by his father, William U. Niss; two sons, Joshua C. Niss and Matthew J.R. Niss; a sister, Sarah Payson; several nieces, greatnieces and nephews; childhood friend, William T. Phinney; many beloved friends and colleagues.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 16, at 10 A.M. at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, Congress Street, Portland.

Priscilla A. Norton
2005-02-24

Priscilla Atwood Norton, 89, died Friday, February 18 peacefully at the Southport home of her daughter where she had resided for the past 2-1/2 years.

Born January 28, 1916 in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of Alfred L. and May Wells Atwood. She graduated for Norwood High School in 1937.

In 1938 she married Thomas Waterman Norton. They settled in New York City before moving to Fair Lawn, N.J. in 1940 where their three daughters began their formative years. In 1956 the family moved to Strafford, Penn., when Mr. Norton became associate director of the Wistas Institute at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In 1973 Mr. and Mrs. Norton retired to Naples, Fla. for the winter months and continued to spend the summers on David's Island in Cozy Harbor, Southport, a vacation home to five generations.

In 1999, she returned to her beloved Maine year-round.

Visits from her extended family and special friends Olma Sullivan, Kathy Bean and Dr. Alan Barker brought comfort during her final days.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1981.

Survivors include three daughters, Ann N. Lingelbach and her husband Albert L. of Port Washington, N.Y., Gail N. Richter of Southport, and Susan N. McGuinness and her husband Aims C. of Littleton, Colo. and David's Island; a sister, Mary A. Rideout of West Boothbay Harbor; a niece, Mary Ann Rideout of East Boothbay; a nephew, Skip Rideout of Southport; a cousin, Virginia W. Radasch of Chaslemont, Mass.; and Horace Record of Portland; seven grandchildren; and three great-grand-children.

Later in the spring there will be a memorial service at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Boothbay Harbor.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Southport Junior Yacht Club Sailing Foundation, Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 57, Southport, ME 04576.

Martha J. Norwood
2005-11-10

Martha Josephine Norwood, 101, died Wednesday, November 2 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born November 1, 1904 in Kennebunk, she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horatio Emmons. She lived in various towns in Maine.

She married Ralph C. Norwood who was a lighthouse keeper with the United States Lighthouse Service. Together they watched over Great Point Light in Nantucket, Boston Light in Boston Harbor for 17 years, Ram Island Light off Ocean Point for five years, and Spring Point Ledge Light in South Portland for five years and retired after many years of service.

Mrs. Norwood was a homemaker raising her nine children. She loved to dance, play dominoes, and solitaire. She had lived with her daughter, Georgia Emerson, for the last five years in East Boothbay.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph C. Norwood I; four sons, Bruce Norwood, L.G. Norwood, Ralph C. Norwood II, and Dexter Norwood.

Survivors include four daughters, Priscilla Reece of Hingham, Mass., Wanda Bridges of South Deerfield, Mass., Lila Fay Achor of Boothbay Harbor and Georgia F. Emerson of East Boothbay; one son, Robert A. Norwood, Sr. of East Boothbay; 36 grandchildren; 62 great-grand-children; 24 great-great-grandchild-ren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service was held Sunday, November 6 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road in Boothbay. Burial followed in the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boothbay Baptist Church Youth Ministry, P.O. Box 64, Boothbay, ME 04537.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Boothbay.

Geraldine Niemenski
2006-02-02

Geraldine M. Niemenski, 82, of Southport, died Wednesday, January 25 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born May 3, 1923 in Larksville, Penn., she was a daughter of John and Mary Mock Mital. She grew up in Plymouth, Pennsylvania.

Mrs. Niemenski worked as a cashier at Kroger's in Akron, Ohio.

Twenty-three years ago she and her husband retired to Southport. She enjoyed reading books.

Survivors include her husband, Charles L. Niemenski of Southport; one son, Charles L. Niemenski, Jr. and his wife Ellen of Canton, Ohio; one grandson, Robert Niemenski of Akron, Ohio; one brother, Joseph Mital of Wilkes-Barre, Penn; and one sister, Mary Reisteter and her husband George of Bethlehem, Penn.

A private family graveside service was held at the Niemenski Family cemetery on Southport.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
