ROBERT ‘BOB’ E. SHELTON
BAR HARBOR — Robert “Bob” E. Shelton, 85, died peacefully at Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor on April 12, 2008, surrounded by family. He was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Bar Harbor, the son of William R. and Addie (Keezer) E. Shelton. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946 as an aviation machinist’s mate second class on PBY Catalina Flying Boats in the American and Pacific Theaters.

PRENTICE ‘TOBY’ STRONG JR.
SOUTHWEST HARBOR — On April 10, 2008, Prentice “Toby” Strong Jr. died from complications resulting from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a lifetime of smoking.

CLAYTON J. ‘JACK’ WALLACE
TREMONT — Clayton J. “Jack” Wallace, 83, died April 13, 2008 at a Brewer health care facility. He was born in Tremont on Sept. 19, 1924, the son of Clayton E. and Cecile V. (Greene) Wallace. Jack was in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater as a tail gunner.

FRANKLIN HENRY WARD
SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Franklin Henry Ward, 82, died March 20, 2008. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Mount Height cemetery in Southwest Harbor. Arrangements are by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert.

BETH LYONS
TREMONT — A memorial service for the late Beth Lyons will be on Lopaus Point at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2008. Friends and family are asked to gather at the Lyons’ home, 14 Hinton Drive in Bernard, between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Comfortable shoes are recommended for walking to the site of the service.

RICHARD LYNN AINSWORTH
TRENTON — Richard Lynn Ainsworth, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 5, 2008. He was born in Boonville, N.Y., on Sept. 21, 1929, the son of Millard F. and Alice (Williams) Ainsworth.

DESIREE LEANNE ELIZABETH GRAY
SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Desiree Leanne Elizabeth Gray, affectionately known as Desi, passed away Sept. 3, 2008, at the age of 15 after being struck by a car. She was a sophomore at Mount Desert Island High School.

KENNETH W. TURNER
SWANS ISLAND — Kenneth W. Turner, 81, died Dec. 14, 2008 on Swans Island. He was born Dec. 31, 1926 on Swans Island, the son of Fred and Flora (Sellers) Turner. Ken was a great mechanic and a good fisherman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

JENNETTE H. VARNUM
TREMONT — Jennette H. Varnum, 86, died Dec. 14, 2008 at Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor. She was born Aug. 26, 1922 in Tremont, the daughter of Charles and Evelyn (Pomroy) Hamblen.

MELBA CARR WILSON
BAR HARBOR — Melba Carr Wilson, 69, died peacefully on Feb. 11, 2009, in Bar Harbor. She was born May 28, 1939 in Providence, R.I., daughter of Dorothy and Gordon Carr. She graduated from Classical High School in Providence in 1956, where she excelled as a student and an athlete. She attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, majoring in botany, and got a master’s of arts in teaching and a Ph.D. in Biology at Brown University.

MARY ELIZABETH CANTWELL
BAR HARBOR — Mary Elizabeth Cantwell, 81, passed away Feb. 16, 2009, in Bar Harbor. born May 14, 1927, in the Panama Canal Zone to Lillian (Chase) Proctor and E. Tyler Proctor, Sr., Mary grew up in Bar Harbor and various other worldly locales as her father pursued his Navy career. Known to many as “Mrs. C,” “Momma Mary,” “Grammie Mary” or just “Mrs. Cantwell,” Mary will be remembered for her years as librarian at Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor.

HAZEL P. KURSCHNER
TREMONT — Hazel P. Kurschner, 70, of Biddeford, died Feb. 10, 2009, at St. Andre’s Health Care Facility after a long illness. She was born in Tremont on April 23, 1938, a daughter of Harry and Bernice (Brewer) Beers. She attended Tremont grammar school and Pemetic High School. Hazel worked with Shape Inc. for several years. Later, she owned and operated the Bridgeview Market in Biddeford. She also assisted delivering oversize loads up and down the interstate, working with Maine Road Escort Service until her retirement in 2003.

ANNE WIGHT PHILLIPS
MOUNT DESERT — Anne Wight Phillips, a long-time summer resident of Seal Harbor, died Feb. 12, 2009 in Westwood, Mass. Dr. Phillips was the first woman surgeon to operate at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and was a pioneer in the field of burn research, treatment and prevention. She had decided to become a doctor at age 5, and pursued that goal doggedly despite then-existing barriers to women entering the profession.

LOIS K. HAMOR
MOUNT DESERT — Lois K. Hamor, 63, passed away peacefully on Feb. 8, 2009 in Bar Harbor, with her entire family by her side. She was born June 19, 1945 in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Robert E. and Freda L. (Brewer) DeRevere. Lois had been battling a horrible disease called vasculitis for about 20 years. For the past four or five years, she hid her unbearable pain from everyone.

SANDRA LEE MYERS-KISTLER
BAR HARBOR — Sandra Lee Myers-Kistler, 74, died Feb. 4, 2009 at Mount Desert Island Hospital. She was born Oct. 30, 1934 in Huntingburg, Ind., the daughter of Russell Oscar and Nelda Louise (Bartelt) Myers. Sandi had many happy childhood memories. Her family and many childhood friends remained a strong source of comfort and love in her life. Her interests in and love of reading, writing stories, singing in church and community choirs, and playing the piano, began in Huntingburg when she was a small child and continued throughout her adult life.

RONALD P. MACQUINN
BAR HARBOR — Ronald P. MacQuinn, 70, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Jan. 31, 2009. He was born in Bar Harbor on May 26, 1938, the son of Henrietta and Harold MacQuinn of Hulls Cove.

RONALD PERRY SHUTT
BAR HARBOR — Roland Perry Shutt, 84, died peacefully on Jan. 29, 2009 at Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, with family by his side. Roland was born in Long Beach, Calif. in 1924 to T. Bennett and Gertrude Shutt. He attended Whittier Union High School, where his lifelong interest in art began. After serving in the South Pacific during World War II, he graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and went on to earn a master’s degree in medical illustration from the Medical College of Georgia.

AMANI JOY GATEWOOD
FAIRFAX STATION, VA. - Amani Joy Gatewood passed away Thursday Nov. 26, 1998, in Leesburg, VA. She was born Sept. 30, 1974, in Foils Church, Va., to Gary George Pinder and Carol Ann Coulter Shoreborn.

She was employed as a secretary for (NPES) Association for Supplier for Printing & Publishing Tech. Mrs. Gatewood was a 1992 graduate of South Lakes High School in Reston, Va. and attended the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. She was a member of the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Derian Chenel Gatewood of Fairfax Station, Va.; her husband, Russell R. Gatewood of Herndon, Va.; her mother, Carol Shoreborn` of Dexter; her father,. Rev. Gary G. Pinder and stepmother, Barbara A. Pinder of Reston, Va.; her brother, Kevin Jon Pinder of Falls Church, Va.; her sister, Rabun J. Dodge and brother-in-law, Ronnie Dodge of Hermon; two nephews, Nicholas and Colton Dodge; maternal grandparents, Carlton and Elsa Coulter of New Bern, NC; her paternal grandparents, Raymond G. and Rosalie Pinder of Rochester, NY.

A Celebration of Life will be held 1PM, Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, 1724 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, Va., with Interment following at the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Future services will be held in Maine. The family requests that memorials be mode in Amani's name to the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church Foundation, 1724 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, Va. 22101. Arrangements are by Green Funeral Home.

David B. McMahon
Greenville - David B. McMahon, 68, Loving husband of the late Barbara McMahon, died Nov. 14, 1998 at a local hospital.

He was born on June 25, 1930 in Waterville the son of James and Harriet McMahon. He was married to Barbara for 46 years before her passing in 1996.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Cecile R. Cole Post 94 American Legion. He was a comunicant of St. Josephs Catholic Church in Rockwood.

He is survived by four sons, Shawn O. and his wife Phyllis of Augusta, Shane C. and his wife Kathy of West Gardiner, James B., and Kelly D. McMahon both of Greenville, one grand daughter, Molly Anne , five step grand children, Paul, Mathew, Zoe, Zina, and Fritze, one great grand son, Dylan. He was pre-deceased by three brothers, James, Richard, and John.

A Graveside service was held Nov. 16, 1998 at the family lot in Greenville cemetery with Fr. Anthony Rotunno officiating.

Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St. Brunswick ME 04011.

Albert H. Wheaton Sr.
Dover - Foxcroft, Albert H. Wheaton Sr., 66, died November 19, 1998 at his home in Dover - Foxcroft.

He was born on March 7, 1932 the son of Elias J. and Edna (Libby) Wheaton. He is survived by three sons, Albert Jr., David and Jerome Wheaton, three daughters, Nanette Snyder, Valerie Wheaton and Eve Salley. one sister, Elsie London, Many Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews. He was pre-deceased by several brothers and sisters.

Services will be private.

DOROTHY M. BRAWN
DEXTER - Dorothy M. Brawn, 86, died February 5, 1999 at a Bangor hospital. She was born June 17, 1912 at Exeter the daughter of Charles and Edna (Merrill) Marsh. She graduated from Dexter High School and the Maine School of Commerce in Bangor. She was a secretary at Abbott Woolen Mill in Dexter for a number of years and then worked in the family poultry business at the farm on Maple Street. She was a member of the Lords and Ladies Square Dance Club in Dexter.

She was predeceased by her husband Hildon, who died in 1973, a brother, Frederick Marsh, and sisters, Eleanor Smith Ronco and Isabel True. She is survived by 4 sons, Roger and his wife Judy of Dexter, Malcolm and his fiancee Alicia of Andover, Mass., Gregory and his wife Patricia of Dexter, and Jeffrey of Reisterstown, Maryland; one brother Kenneth and his wife Fran of Oak Bluffs, Mass.; 5 grandchildren, Kim Brawn of Santa Barbara, CA, Barbara Brawn of Reisterstown, Maryland, Valerie Wigham and husband Fred of Garland, Catherine Brawn of Mass., and Douglas Brawn of Vail, Colorado; 1 great grand-daughter, Hannah Wigham of Garland; several nieces and nephews.

At her request, there will be no services at this time. A spring committal service will be held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Dexter Public Health Association, Inc., c/o Janet Rines, 69 Main Street, Dexter, ME 04930.

Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter.

MARION A. COSTELLO
CORINNA - Marion A. Costello, 67, died February 6, 1999 at a Bangor hospital. She was born January 11, 1932 at Guilford the daughter of William and Eleanor (Wilson) Andrews. She was a communicant of St. Anne's Parish and was a longtime resident of Sunshine Village in Corinna. She took great pleasure in her arts and crafts. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas R. Costello, Sr., in 1981; her sister, Evelyn Gordon, and her grandson Tommy Costello, both in 1998. She is survived by 2 sons, Thomas and wife Patti Costello of Alexandria, Virginia, Steven and wife Sally Costello of Pittston; 2 daughters, Janie and husband Pete Pitcher of Etna, and Sharon Costello of Danbury, CT; 2 sisters, Mrs. Harold (Pauline) Leland of Sangerville, and Mrs. Elmer (Irene) Bolstridge of Corinna; 11 grandchildren: Theresa, Michelle, Robin, Kelly Ann, Suzanne, Mathew, Patrick, Caryn, Kelly Erin, Joseph and Nancy; 3 great grandchildren, Christopher, Erynn, and Taylor.

Funeral services will be held 10 A.M. Tuesday, February 9th, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, Exeter Road, Corinna, with Rev. Antonio Amato of St. Anne's Catholic Church officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral chapel from 9 A.M. until the time of services. Spring burial will be in Bethany Cemetery, Monson, Mass. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 128 Seawall Street, Augusta 04330; or to the American Heart Association, Box 346, Augusta 04330.

RUTH H. SILVA
Parkman - Ruth H. Silva, 72, Loving wife of Ernest Silva Sr. , died February 7, 1999 at her home in Parkman. She was born November 30, 1926 in New Bedford MA the daughter of Herbert and Adelaide (Cook) Thompson.

She is survived by her husband, Three sons, Edward Durant of Monson, Steven Durant of Raymond and Ernest Silva Jr. of Parkman, Two daughters, Susan Baker of Huntington MA and Debra Trice of Herman, Fifteen Grand Children and 2 Great Grand Children, one sister, Beatrice Vasconcellos of CT.

Services will be private.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Pine State Cremation Service.
