Phyllis Dolloff
Phyllis Frank Dolloff, 88, died on Friday, August 12, 2005 at Gorham House, following a brief illness.

Born at Westbrook on June 16, 1917, Mrs. Dolloff was a daughter of Walter Everett and Bertha Ida (Butler) Frank. She attended schools in Washburn, Westbrook, Portland and at Pennell Institute in Gray.

She married Maynard C. Dolloff in 1936, and began her demanding life as a young farm wife on the family farm. Many hours were spent in vegetable gardens and in the kitchen readying provisions for the winter months.

She also worked at Porteous, Mitchell and Bran in Portland, and as the first teller in the newly-established First Auburn Trust Company in Gray in the early fifties.

In addition to the usual farm life, she joined with her husband as they worked through the ranks in the local, county, state and national granges. She served several terms as Lecturer (program chairman) of the Gray Grange and was renowned for her outstanding programs. She was an active leader in her own right, fulfilling the highest office of Pomona in Cumberland County Pomona Grange and of Flora in the Maine State Grange. She also served on degree teams and on installation teams. On many occasions, Mrs. Dolloff took part in the Seventh Degree of the National Grange Assembly of Demeter. As a voting delegate to the National Grange, along with her husband for the duration of his term as master of the Maine State Grange, she thus became a lifetime voting member of the Assembly of Demeter of the National Grange, an honor held by very few. Phyllis was exceptionally proud of her successful role as the leader of the Junior Grange Department of the Maine State Grange during a time of unusual activity for the young people and their leaders. She hosted some tremendously inspiring and enthusiastic workshop meetings at the Grange headquarters in Augusta, and her efforts are remembered to this day.

After the Grange years, she worked in Augusta for several years as the director of a very effective area-wide Welcome Wagon program, providing a well-needed function in the capital city, where people seemed to be frequently moving in.

Among her most exciting times were the years of political campaigning, as she worked diligently with her husband Maynard when he sought the Maine governorship on two occasions. The latter endeavor fell short in 1962 by a mere 369 votes. Phyllis never wavered in her beliefs and was interested in matters governmental and political throughout her entire life.

She was happy with her roles in life, which seemed to be to assist her husband in his roles as Maine's Commissioner of Agriculture and his federal appointments in the Departments of Labor and Agriculture in Washington.

She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, and assisted in hosting a couple of NASDA sessions in the Virgin Islands.

Her church affiliation has always been foremost in her priorities as she has relocated, starting with the Gray Congregational, the State Street Congregational in Augusta, Trinity Presbyterian Church of Herndon, VA, the Waldoboro United Methodist and finally back to Gray Congregational-home at last!

Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, her husband and a sister, Wilma Hall.

She is survived by her three children, two sons, Ronald and his wife Lillian of Waldoboro, and Richard and his wife Cathy of Gorham, and a daughter, Kathryn and her husband Robert Brown of Herndon, VA. Her surviving grandchildren are Debora and her husband Rev. Mark Tanner of Skowhegan, Linda and her husband Alan Pease of Warren, Andrew of Gorham, Cynthia (Brown) and her husband Rich Mathers of Herndon, Keith Brown and his wife Lisa of Herndon, Todd and his wife Amy of Naples, Terry of Westbrook and Tina of Livermore. Mrs. Dolloff is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren.

A visitation and funeral service were held on Monday at the First Congregational Church of Gray, with the Rev. Douglas Hedstrom officiating. Burial is in the Gray Village Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Philip S. "Bud" Jewett
Philip S. `Bud' Jewett dies at 88

Philip `Bud' S. Jewett, a longtime sheep and dairy farmer in Gray, died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 25, 1998 at his Windham home. He was 88.

Bud Jewett was extremely active even into his 80s. Just recently, he stocked a trout pond with 225 brook trout in preparation for a fishfry on his birthday, which would have been October 10. He worked every day in his gardens, and just last winter helped deliver 189 lambs.

He loved his family, his sheep, his gardens and country fairs. He was particularly proud that two of his grandsons, Phil and Bill Webster, both of Windham, followed in his footsteps by having sheep herds of their own.

He was born in Skowhegan, a son of Albert A. and Belle P. Sanborn Jewett. He attended Skowhegan schools, and graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1927.

After graduation, Jewett moved to Standish to manage a herd of Jersey cattle for Dr. Smith. He stayed there for 11 years until Dr. Smith's death, after which he became a logger with his uncle, Fred Sanborn. During this period of his life, he also did some logging for Karl Merrill, of Gray, who eventually asked Bud to manage his farm.

So once again Bud Jewett was doing what he enjoyed most, working the land and caring for animals. He worked for Karl until the farm was sold to Mike and Marilyn Wilson in 1961. Knowing a good person when they saw one, the Wilsons kept Bud on until he `retired' in 1995.

During his more than 50 years on the farm, Bud made many friends among the townspeople of Gray. In later years, he was often seen caring for sheep at the home of Jim and Susan Gillies.

Surviving are two daughters, Fredonna Webster, of Windham, and Mary E. Moody, of Torrington, CT, 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. His wife, Gwendolyne H. McVicar Jewett, died in 1992.

Philip Pollard
Philip Pollard died September 18, 2003.

He was born in Gray on July 10, 1929, a son of James W.B. and Sarah Hansen Pollard. He graduated from Pennell Institute in 1947, and was a former Selectman of the Town of Gray, member of the Library Committee, MSAD 15 School Board, the local Jaycee organization and the Spring Meadows Golf Club.

Mr. Pollard worked in the grocery business for over 55 years, first as a buyer and warehouse manager for A&P, then as owner of the Gray IGA from 1980 until 1992, where he continued to work until his retirement in 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Viola Hatch Pollard, whom he married in 1950; two daughters, Susan Pollard, of Gray, Nancy Pollard Titcomb, of Sanford, and a son, Edward Pollard, who lives with his wife Karen in Monmouth; four sisters, Barbara Ryan, Jane Barton and Dona Hill, all of Gray, and Geraldine Cose, of Massachusetts; and five grandchildren, James Titcomb, Sara Titcomb, Kelly Day, Brittany Scirica and Lindsay Scirica.

A funeral was held at the First Congregational Church, Pastor Douglas Hedstrom officiating. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to Gray Fire-Rescue, 125 Shaker Road, Gray, ME 04039.

Peter David Petersen, 59
Peter David Petersen, 59, died Aug. 25, 2005, surrounded by family and friends.

He was born on Nov. 1, 1945, to Jens Edward Petersen and Clara Louise Hamilton Petersen.

Pete was an entrepreneur and enjoyed being self-employed. His many business ventures included construction and foundation work as well as achieving his life long dream of Pete's Garage and Towing, serving AAA and other local clients.

A hobby of his was hunting, for both deer and bargains. Family and friends were very important in his life. He was very generous in every respect.

He is survived by three daughters, Noel Christine Hasenfus, Teresa Louise Aceto, and Tammy Lynn Lowe; two sons, Peter Jens Petersen and William Howard Lee Petersen; the mother of his firstborn and childhood sweetheart, Gail Stevens-Littlfield; of the mother of the latter four and love of his life, Edie Crawford; 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren with two more on the way; a longtime companion, Geraldine Jewett; a sister, Dorothy Portier, and a brother, Wayne Bucknam.
