VIRGINIA MAY MASSOW
CORINNA - Virginia May Massow, 76, died July 7, 2000 at her home after a long illness. born in Windsor, CT, she and her husband Fred Massow, Sr. moved to Corinna in 1976 to assist their son Fred, Jr. in the operation of Massow’s Auction Barn. In 1987 she opened Gram’s Place on Route 7 in Newport, retiring in 1994 due to illness. Gram will be remembered for her kindness and generosity to those in need.

Besides her mother, Marie Wright, she leaves her son Fred Massow, daughter Patricia Grumbach, and their spouses, Fran Fruchtenicht and Richard Grumbach; 8 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and 2 brothers, John and George Wittenzellner. Friends may call 7-9 P.M. Monday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, Exeter Road, Corinna.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 A.M. Wednesday, July 12th at St. Gabriel’s Church, Windsor, CT.Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Windsor.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Corinna Ambulance Service, P.O. Box J Corinna, ME 04928.

JOHN GUNTHER
CAMBRIDGE - John Gunther, 76, died July 11, 2000 at his home in Cambridge. He was born June 30, 1924, in Farmingdale, New Jersey, son of Austin and Mary (Matthews) Gunther. He served in the US Navy during WWII from 1943-1945. A long time resident of Howell, New Jersey, John served on the Howell Planning Board ,the Howell Township Committee from 1975-1976 and served as the Mayor of Howell in 1977. He was an exempt member of the Southard Volunteer Fire Company and was a State of New Jersey Fire Warden. John was a master well driller and was president of Windeler & Gunther Well Drilling, Inc. in Howell from 1948-1978. He also was Past President of the New Jersey Well Driller’s Association.In 1978 John and his wife Lynda moved to Cambridge, Maine, where they owned and operated J & L Gunther Water Systems.

He is survived by his wife, Lynda (Scruton) Gunther of Cambridge; two sons, Michael Gunther and John D. Gunther and a daughter, Patricia (Gunther) Bhatiya all of New Jersey; two brothers, Thomas Gunther of Florida and Charles Gunther of Madison; three sisters, Helen Mershon of Florida, Marion Johnson and Doris Hayes both of New Jersey; five grandchildren, Michael and Christopher Gunther and Dinker, Neil and Kyle Bhatiya; several nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by a special friend, Kimberly Brown of New Hampshire.

Memorial services will be held at 1 PM, Saturday July 29, 2000 at the Cambridge Baptist Church with Rev. John Johnston officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Mayo Regional Hospital, 64 W. Main St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426 or to Sky Arch Hermitage, 47 Bryant Rd., St. Albans, ME 04971. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter.

PRESTON G. NICHOLAS
GARLAND, Preston G. Nicholas, 70, died July 12, 2000 at the Veterans Hospital in White River Jct, Vermont. He was born Feb. 28, 1930 in Ferris, Texas, son of Floyd and Vera (Wicker) Nicholas. He served in the US Marine Corps. for ten years and later worked selling and demonstrating helicopters.

He is survived by a son and his wife Preston and Mary Nicholas Jr. of Chittenden VT; two daughters and their husbands Judith and Barry Dellaire of Sangerville and Suzanne and Butch Horlieca of Bangor; 8 grandchildren and one great grandson.

Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Monday, July 17, 2000 at the Maplewood cemetery in Garland. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter.

HELEN (HAVEY) CLUKEY
DEXTER, Helen (Havey) Clukey, 79, wife of Paul E. Clukey, died July 13, 2000 at a Bangor hospital after suffering a heart attack. She was born August 14, 1920, in Pittsfield, daughter of the late Jeanette Havey McCausland and Earle Havey. Helen’s most treasured moments and memories were traveling and spending time with her husband, Paul. She loved playing bridge and thoroughly enjoyed her bridge friends, as well as her cribbage parties and friends. She and Paul received great pleasure from cruising around Lake Wassokeag on their pontoon boat and leading the annual 4th of July boat parade, which they started 14 years ago. She loved her home, her flowers, and most of all, she loved Paul and their combined families.

In addition to her husband, Paul, she is survived by a sister, Barbara (Havey) Bauer of San Juan Capistrano, California; a son, Michael Herring of Las Vegas, Nevada; two daughters, Susan (Herring) Bogle of Dexter and Diane Herring of Hermon; a step daughter, Susan (Clukey) Haggerty of Winterport; a step daughter in-law, Merrill (Warren) Clukey of Garland; three grandchildren, Kimberly Bogle, Stephanie (Herring) Waite, and Shawn Herring; seven step grandchildren, Wendy Bonesteel, Brent Clukey, Dennis Haggerty, Patrick Haggerty, Sarah Haggerty, Michael Haggerty and Elizabeth Haggerty; five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Arden Havey and Vincent Havey, and a stepson, Paul (Johnny) Clukey. She will be remembered by special friends, Sally Thompson, Betty Whitney, Geneva and Fred LaFountain, Bob and Bev Tillson, Bob and Jane Hoppe, George and Melba Warren, her 10:00 bakery friends, and so many others too numerous to mention.

Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 PM Tuesday, July 18. 2000, at the Crosby & Neal funeral Home, 61 Main St., Dexter. Memorial services will be held at 10 AM Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at the funeral home with burial in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Dexter.

KENNETH W. BRAWN
DEXTER - Kenneth W. Brawn, 88, a lifelong resident of Dexter, died July 14, 2000 at Dexter Healthcare after a short illness. Ken was born September 30, 1911, the youngest son of Walter and Mabel (Towle) Brawn. He graduated from Dexter High School, Class of 1928. born to a pioneer family, Ken was a true Maine woodsman. He started trapping when he was 10, and as an adult,(quotes are from DEXTER: SPIRIT OF AN AGE, VOL. II) "he hunted and trapped extensively, both near home and up north." He used to be able to call deer and bear right out of the woods, and "always felt a special kinship with his ancestor, the legendary trapper Peter Brawn", who was said to have opened the trapping lines to the State of Maine, after marrying a Native American woman. A hardworking man of many talents, he was a feisty boxer, picked potatoes,and worked in a canning factory. When not in the woods, which he loved best of all, he earned a living as a carpenter and builder as far away as Florida, where, during the depression, "he helped construct a $30,000 boathouse for millionaire Harry Flagler", as well as constructing and renovating homes all around the Town of Dexter.

He is survived by 2 daughters, Melanie Brawn Mineo of Westhampton, NY, and Trina Pulkinnen of Patten; a son, Tony Lane of Boca Raton, FL(all formerly of Dexter); 3 grandsons, Zenon Pax Mineo of Westhampton, NY, Garth and Shane Pulkinnen, both of Texas; as well as loving nieces, grandnieces, grandnephews, and dear friends in the Dexter area. He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine (Shaw) Brawn; his brother, Andrew, sister Marie, and nephew Sonny.

At his request there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held 3 P.M. Thursday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main Street, Dexter. Donations in his memory may be made to the Dexter Historical Society, P.O. Box 481, Dexter 04930.

RALPH A. BERG
CORINNA - Ralph A. Berg, 60, the husband of Althea "Dottie" (Finnemore) Berg, died unexpectedly at his home July 17, 2000. He was born April 6, 1940, in Milo, the son of Andrew and Eleanor (Higgins) Berg. He was a graduate of Brownville Junction High School and graduated from Husson College in 1962. He served in the Air National Guard in Texas and had worked all his life as a self employed entrepreneur. He was the owner and operator of Berg Enterprises which he opened in Corinna in 1985 and was a great supporter of children's organizations.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Corinna, are two sons, Robert Berg and his wife, Heather and Ricky Berg; a granddaughter, Alison A. Berg, all of Corinna; three aunts, Madelyn Stanley of Farmingdale, Mina Phinney of Dennysville and Mildred Berg of Monson; four cousins, Bobby Higgins, John Stanley and his wife, Elaine, Susan Thomas and Peter Higgins; his stepchildren, Vicki Trask of Newport, Scott Trask of Garland and Terry Trask and his wife, Carole of Cambridge.

Friends may call at the Thompson Funeral Home, 30 St. Albans Rd., Corinna, 5-9 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Brownville Jct. United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Betty Higgins officiating. Burial will be in Pine Tree Cemetery, Brownville Junction. Those who wish may make donations to the Brownville Junction United Methodist Church or the Brownville Junction Recreation Department.

WYONA LOUISE WARK
NEWPORT – Wyona Louise Wark, 84, died July 19, 2000 at her Newport residence. She was born January 23, 1916 at Palmyra the daughter of Henry and Effie (Rines) Fletcher. She was a communicant of St. Agnes Church and a member of the Palmyra Grange. She and her husband Nathan were also active members of the Moose Lodge in the past.Nathan predeceased her in 1995.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Lois Scurti of Whispering Pines, NC, and Sandra Jean Riffle of Newport; 3 sisters, Marion Foote of Camden, Mildred Pease of Bath, and Margaret Margeson of Rockland; 1 grand-daughter, Lorriane Scurti of DeKalb, Illinois ; 2 grandsons, Jeffrey Harth of Newport and Craig Riffle of Chicago, Illinois; and a sister-in-law, Reba Wark ofHendersonville, NC. She was also predeceased by a grandson, David of Ottawa, Illinois.

At her request there will be no public services.Burial will be in the family lot, Riverside Cemetery,Newport. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.

DWIGHT L. RADLEY, JR.
CAMBRIDGE, Dwight L. Radley, Jr., 70, died July 20, 2000 at his home in Cambridge. He was born August 6, 1929 in Cutler, Maine, son of Dwight and Florence (Wilcox) Radley. He served in the US Air Force from 1947 to 1951. After the service he worked for many years as an Administrative Assistant at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. In 1985 he retired, and in later years moved to Cambridge, Maine.

He is survived by his wife, Abbie (Ackley) Radley of Cambridge; two sons, Barry Radley and Dwain Radley both of Cutler; two stepsons and their wives, Paul and Sam McQuaid and Dana and Marian McQuaid all of Mass., two step daughters and their husbands, Joan and Frank Faria of Rhode Island and Barbara and David Wynkoop of Ohio; two grandchildren, Tracie and Darcie Radley; ten step grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Sam Radley of Rhode Island. He was predeceased by a sister, Faye Radley.

Graveside services will be held at the Cutler cemetery at a later date. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter.

MYRA C. KERR
CORINNA – Myra C. Kerr, 83, died July 21, 2000 at a Pittsfield hospital after a long illness. She was born August 1, 1916 at Haynesville the daughter of Jarvis and Cora (Barton) Cook. She graduated from Corinna Union Academy, Class of 1935. She had been employed as a secretary at the Corinna Town Office, and then at Moosehead Woolen Mill in Corinna until it was destroyed by fire. She and her husband Walter moved to Detroit, Michigan in the early 1950’s, where she continued work as a secretary. After retiring in 1978, she and Walter moved back to Corinna. He predeceased her in 1994. Myra was a member of the Corinna United Methodist Church, the Corinna American Legion Auxiliary, and was a past member of the Amicus Club.

She is survived by a brother-in-law, Donald Kerr of Asheville, NC; nieces and nephews, Kenneth Cook and Carolyn Jackson, both of Farmington; Herbert Dow and Sally Mendivil, both of Corinna, Geraldine Packard of Melrose, MA, Kenene Kerr Weymouth of Greenfield, Indiana, Kathryn Hornell and Lewis Curtis, both of Cottageville, NC; and Catherine Stokes of Free Soil, Michigan; several grand-nieces And nephews.

Friends may call 5-8 P.M. Sunday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna.Funeral services will be held 1 P.M. Monday at the Corinna United Methodist Church.Burial will be in the Corinna Village Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Corinna United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 418, Corinna 04928

VERA (SIMPSON) PALMER GILBERT
EXETER & GARLAND-On July 23, 2000 Vera went home to be with the Lord. She had resided for the past 5 years at the Dexter Healthcare Facility. She was born December 23, 1906 at Amity the daughter ofJohn and Isa (Smith) Simpson. When Vera was a child, her family moved to West Garland and purchased a farm there. She attended the Garland schools, and graduated from Higgins Classical Institute, Class of 1926. She taught school for a number of years and married her first husband, Lester E. Palmer, in 1927. He predeceased her in June 1960. She married her 2nd husband, Bernal L. Gilbert in 1966, and they enjoyed many years together. She especially appreciated him for taking her on a winter long trip to California to see relatives there. He predeceased her in 1980. Vera eventually moved to Garland to live with her daughter and husband, Edith and Lee Stone, and grand-daughter Jayne until she moved to Dexter Healthcare in 1995. She was the current holder of the Boston Post Cane for the Town of Garland for over 15 years. She was a member of the Exeter Pentecostal Church and a charter member and oldest surviving member of the Eastern Star of Exeter. Her interest was her church, sewing and garment design. She was a loving and caring mother.

She is survived by 2 sons, the Rev. John Palmer of Washburn, Carl H. and his wife Lorraine Palmer of Exeter; 2 daughters, Edith and husband Raymond Lee Stone of Garland and Evelyn Palmer of Pittsfield;1 step-daughter, Lenna Sheridan of Florida; 1 brother, John D. and wife Alice Simpson of Carmel Valley, California;8 grandchildren, Joanne and husband Peter Prescott of Dexter, Matthew and wife Kathy Palmer of Washburn, Mark and wife Terry Palmer of Presque Isle, Lester “Mick” and Nancy Lawrence of Clinton, Reginald and wife Sharon of Exeter, Marie and husband Steve Hadley of Seattle, Washington, Jayne Lesslee Stone of Garland, and Roderick “Ricky” Palmer of Exeter and many great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 P. M. Wednesday, July 26th, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, Exeter Road, Corinna.Friends may call from noon until time of services. Burial will be in Exeter Center Cemetery.

TERI LYNN JOHNSTON
MILO - Teri Lynn Johnston, 43, wife of Bruce "Butch" Johnston, passed away unexpectedly while on vacation in Jacksonville, Fla. She was born March 13, 1957, the daughter of Donald and Marguerite (Storer) Swazey. She was a member of the Aldworth Chapter No. 39 OES.

She is survived by her loving husband of 24 years, Butch; a son, Brandon and fiance, Charlie Ann and granddaughter, Alanna; her father, Donald E. Swazey; a sister, Lisa (Swazey) Bouchard; two brothers, Scott and Lyle Swazey. She was predeceased by her mother, Marguerite Swazey and her maternal grandparents, Clyde and Edna Storer.

Graveside memorial services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Evergreen Cemetery, Milo, with the Rev. Betty Higgins officiating.

BARBARA J. WALDEN
GREENVILLE - Barbara J. Walden, 72, loving wife of Edwin Walden for more than 51 years, died July 28, 2000, at her home in Greenville. She was born Oct. 29, 1927, in Lewiston, the daughter of Lauriston and Vera (Damon) Jacobs. She was a graduate of University of Maine with a major in Economics and a minor in Education. From time to time, she was a substitute teacher. She operated the Greenville Airport for many years. She was a devoted Christian.

She is survived by her loving husband; two sons, Kimball W. Walden of Greenville and Peter J. Walden of Monmouth; two daughters, Margaret L. Lambertson of Cumberland and Tracy Turner of Greenville; 15 grandchildren, two sisters, Jean Perkins and Mary Ann Metz, both of Florida; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by one daughter, Debarah Ann Walden.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at the Union Evangelical Church on Main St., Greenville. Arrangements by McCrory Funeral Home, Greenville.

MARION H. COTTON
SEBEC - Marion H. Cotton, 86, wife of John Cotton, died Aug. 2, 2000, at a local hospital. She was born Nov. 3, 1913, in Brodhead, Wis., the daughter of Carl A. and Maybelle L. (Carpenter) Hoglund. Mrs. Cotton was a member of the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church.

She is survived by her husband, John of Sebec; two sons, John C. of Phoenix, Ariz. and Mark of Tanney Town, Md.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to call 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at the Cotton residence in Sebec. Memorial services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church with the Rev. Kenneth Dale officiating. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Piscataquis YMCA, Park Street, Dover-Foxcroft, 04426. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.

FRANCIS G. MCBAY
NEWPORT – Francis G. McBay, 78, died August 8, 2000 at a Pittsfield hospital.He was born in Somerville, Mass. the son of William and Margaret (Boudreau) McBay. He lived in Somerville for most of his life, resided for a time in Westford, Mass., and moved to Newport 14 years ago. Prior to his retirement, Francis was employed as a union truck driver for Hemingway Transportation for 30 years. He was a member of Teamsters Local #25.

He was predeceased by his wife Marjorie (Ward) McBay, grandson, Scott McBay, and brothers William McBay and Walter McBay. He is survived by his loving companion, Edna Chambers of Newport; children, George McBay and his wife Cheryl of Gulfport, FL, Francis J. McBay and his wife Diane of Wilmington, Mass., Marjorie Dearborn and her husband Richard of Nashua, NH, Sandra Marchetti and her husband William of Cambridge, Mass., Judy Bearfield and her husband Jay also of Gulfport, FL; sisters Ruth Loveliss and her husband Richard of Somerville, Mass., and Laura Carty of Rhode Island; 14 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren.

Friends may call 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. Friday at W. S. Cavanaugh & Son Funeral Home, 374 Main Street (Rt. 38), Wilmington, Mass.The funeral will be from the funeral home at 8:45 AM Saturday, with a funeral mass at St. Dorothy’s Church at 10 AM. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Lynnfield, Mass. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick 04011; or to the Greater Boston National Spinal Cord Association, Health South, NERH Way, 2 Rehab, Woburn, MA01801.
