VERGENA H. LEE
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Vergena H. Lee, 89, wife of the late Stanton M. Lee, died Feb. 6, 2002, at a local hospital. She was born Jan. 3, 1913, in St. Albans, the daughter of Ora Leon and Winnie (Cooley) Herring. Vergena grew up on a farm outside of Dover-Foxcroft with four brothers and two sisters. Following graduation from Foxcroft Academy, Class of 1932, she worked in a local dry cleaners as a presser, and then for the American Thread Spool Mill. After the spool mill closed, she went to work for the American Woolen Co. and spent many years there as a spinner. When the woolen company closed in 1953, Vergena and Stanton and their family moved to East Millinocket, and then in 1966, to Tolland, Conn., where they remained until Stanton's retirement in 1982. During their retirement years, they spent winters in Winter Haven, Fla., and summers at their cottage on Sebec Lake. As a homemaker, Vergena also enjoyed hobbies of rug making, ceramics, and knitting. Vergena was a member of Central Grange No. 121. She received a 75-year continuous membership certificate on Sept. 1, 2001.

Vergena is survived by one brother, Durward Herring of Las Vegas; two daughters, Marilyn and her husband, Haldon Young of Tolland, Conn., Christine Thornton of The Colony, Texas; a son, Lawrence and his wife, Kathleen Lee of Fremont, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Lora Gray of Orange City, Fla.; nine grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Stanton; a son, Glenwood Gray; two sisters, Carletta Pitt and Louise Chapman (also deceased on Feb. 6, 2002); and three brothers, Kenneth, Milton, and Wilfred Herring.

Friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. until time of service 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. David McLeish officiating. Spring Interment will be in the family lot in Dover Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Mayo Regional Hospital, 65 W. Main St., Dover-Foxcroft 04426.

MADELYN E. CAMPBELL
ABBOT, Madelyn E. Campbell, 83, died February 7, 2002 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. She was born April 9, 1918 in Abbot, daughter of Max and Mary (Pooler) Leeman. She graduated from Abbot High School class, of 1936 and attended nurses training at Eastern Maine General in Bangor. Madelyn lived in Greenville, Bath and then moved back to the family farm where she was born in Abbot. She worked at Buxton's Store in Abbot and later for many years at Goulette's IGA in Guilford. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters, the American Legion Auxiliary in Abbot and the United Methodist Church in Guilford. For the past couple of years Madelyn has lived at the Dexter Health Care Facility and has enjoyed the excellent care of the nurses and staff. She was predeceased by her husband, George C. Campbell in 1975 and a brother, Kenneth who died in infancy.

She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Sharon and John McKusick of Abbot; 4 grandchildren; Kenneth and his wife, Christine McKusick of Guilford, Robert McKusick of North Carolina, Charles McKusick and Kathleen McKusick of Abbot; 2 great grandchildren, Matthew and Daniel of Guilford.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Sunday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 21 Oak St., Guilford, with the Rev. Dr. Margaret “Dodie” Stowe officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 pm until the time of the service. Spring burial will be in the Village cemetery in Abbot. In lieu of flowers those who wish may make donations to the Abbot Historical Society, Janice McAllister, Treas., P.O. Box 105, Abbot, ME 04406.

FOREST D. HALL
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Forest D. Hall, 97, husband of Bernice (Tupper) Hall, died Feb. 7, 2002, at his residence. He was born Jan. 25, 1905, in Atkinson, the son of Daniel F. and Helen (Wilson) Hall. Mr. Hall had been employed by the B & A Railroad for 50 years.

He is survived by his wife of 78 years, Bernice of Dover-Foxcroft; two daughters, Ada and her husband, Arthur McKee Jr. of Pittston, Shirley and her husband, Malcolm Melia of Monson; a half brother, Daniel Hall of Dover-Foxcroft; a half sister, Beverly Church of Dover-Foxcroft; six grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Stanley; two brothers, Maurice and Frank; and a sister, Ellen Bearce.

Friends are invited to call from 4 p.m. until time of service at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. David McLeish officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot in Lawn Cemetery, Guilford. Those who wish, may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, Inc., 52 Several St., Brunswick 04011.

ANNIE L. (PEAVEY) GOULD
GREENVILLE JCT. - Annie L. (Peavey) Gould, 90, of Beech St., Greenville Jct., died Feb. 7, 2002, at the C.A. Dean Nursing Home, in Greenville. born July 18, 1911, in Patten, she was the daughter of John and Edith (Hutchins) Peavey. She was a graduate of Patten Academy. She and her family lived in Patten until 1962, when they relocated to Derry, N.H. She and her husband returned to Maine in 1967, living in Brewer for a short time before moving to Greenville Jct., where she resided for the past 30 years. Her husband, Leonard Gould, died in 1985.

She is survived by a son, Allison Gould and daughter-in-law, Cynthia (Newhall) Gould of Antrim, N.H.; a granddaughter, Bonnie Gould; a great-grandson, Douglas Hilton, both of South Berwick; two brothers, John H. Peavey of Leominster, Mass., and George F. Peavey of Patten; a brother-in-law, Stephen Naas; and a sister-in-law, Rebecca (Gould) Naas of Presque Isle; nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Patten Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the C.A. Dean Nursing Home, P.O. Box 1129, Greenville, ME 04441-1129 or to a charity of choice.

EMMA A. BARKER
MILO - Emma A. Barker, 91, wife of the late Thomas D. Barker, died Feb. 9, 2002, at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. She was born June 24, 1910, in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of Berton and Alice (Ralston) Lockhart. During World War II, Mrs. Barker was one of the very few female employees of the B & A Railroad, and she later worked for the American Thread Co. She was a member of Aldworth Chapter No. 39 OES and the Park Street United Methodist Church in Milo.

She is survived by three daughters, Winifred E. Murphy of Holden, Sandra J. Haley and her husband, Wayne of Milo, Betty A. Robinson and her husband, Bill of Beaver Dams, N.Y.; a sister, Mary Leinhos of Corning, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren 22 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by seven brothers, Wallace, Douglas, Frank, Gordon, Charles, Roland and Harden; and two sisters, Helen and Alberta.

Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at the Lary Funeral Home, Milo, where funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, with the Rev. Michelle St. Cyr officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery.

MARTHA L. MAYNARD
NEWPORT - Martha L. Maynard, 93, died February 10, 2002 at a Pittsfield healthcare facility. She was born February 26, 1908 at Waterville the daughter of Frank and Eliza (Grindle) Perkins. She graduated from the Waterville Public Schools and Thomas Business College, moving to Newport in 1926. She was employed by the Weymouth Wool Company, and later, Banton, Inc., where she worked for 42 years until her retirement. In 1935, Martha married Seth Lander, who died in 1937. In 1946, she married Philip Maynard, who predeceased her in 1970. Martha was a member of the High Street Congregational Church. She was a Past Matron and Life Member of Nokomis Chapter #42, Order of The Eastern Star, and belonged to the Lakeside Extension. She was a former member of the Sebasticook Garden Club and the Newport Business and Professional Women's Club.

She is survived by a step-daughter, Kay Gilbert of Bath; a step-son, W. Philip Maynard of Montgomery, Alabama; several step-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Isabelle McKenzie Heald of Newport.

Funeral services will be held 7 P.M. Wednesday, February 13th, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 P.M. until the time of services. Memorial donations may be made to the High Street Church, 18 High Street, Newport, ME 04953. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Newport.

ROSE G. CYR-CAMPBELL
DEXTER and PITTSFIELD - Rose G. Cyr-Campbell, 88, died Feb. 10, 2002, in Pittsfield. She was born March 17, 1913, in Enfield, Conn., the daughter of Joseph and Frances (Muscotti) Martinelli. Rose was a devout Catholic all her life. While in Connecticut, she was president of the Saint Cologio Society for Women. She also worked as a supervisor at the Bigalow Mill in Thompsonville, Conn. In 1945, Rose and her husband, Eloi Cyr sold their home and moved to a farm on the Lincoln's Mill Rd. in Corinna, where they resided for 26 years. For most of the time Rose was self-employed on the family farm. After her husband's death, she retired to Florida and for the past 30 years, she had resided between her home in Dexter and Apopka, Fla. Rose enjoyed life and was an avid traveler and bingo player. She also enjoyed making crafts and cooking for her family and friends.

Rose was predeceased by her first husband, Eloi Cyr of Corinna; her second husband, Joseph Campbell of Apopka, Fla.; a stepson, Joseph P. Cyr of Augusta, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Virginia Campbell of Buffalo, N.Y.; and a granddaughter, Amanda Cyr of Dexter. She is survived by two daughters, Frances Kirk and her husband, Milton of Pittsfield and Lea Worster and her husband, Keith of Dexter; a son, Paul Cyr and his wife, Judy; a stepdaughter, Carole Gates of Buffalo, N.Y.; a brother, Samuel Pittiteri and his wife, Helen of Chicopee Falls, Mass.; a sister, Anna Marinone of Windsor Locks, Conn.; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchild-ren.

At Rose's request, there will be no visiting hours. A memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Saint Agnes Catholic Church, Pittsfield, with Fr. Bob Bouchard officiating. Graveside memorial services will be held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter in the spring. Those who wish may make donations in Rose's memory to the Sebasticook Valley Health Care Facility, 33 Leighton St., Pittsfield, ME 04967; or to the Pittsfield Animal Shelter, RR 1, Box 3965, Pittsfield, ME 04967.

Cremation arrangements are in care of Thompson Funeral Home, 30 St. Albans Rd., Corinna.

MARGUERITE E. TREFETHEN
DOVER-FOXCROFT, SKOWHEGAN & CORINNA - Marguerite E. Trefethen, 84, died February 10, 2002 at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. She was born March 9, 1917 at South Dover, the daughter of Harryman and Elva (Hall) Anderson. She attended Guilford High School. She and her husband, Lloyd, owned and operated Trefethen's Market on Madison Avenue in Skowhegan. Marguerite and Lloyd then worked together at Knowles and Dressel Furniture Company, also in Skowhegan. Lloyd predeceased her in 1993. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Dover-Foxcroft.

She is survived by a son, Richard Trefethen of Vasselboro, Me. a daughter Joanne and her husband Dalton Kirk of Corinna. 2 sisters, Lois Young of Greenville and Eleanor Roderick of Dover-Foxcroft; 6 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Marguerite will be buried next to her husband at the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery in Augusta.

There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be scheduled in the spring. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, Corinna.

HILDA I. FOWLER
DEXTER - Hilda I. Fowler, 70, died February 11, 2002 at an Orono nursing home following a long illness. She was born December 9, 1931 in Benton, daughter of Arthur and Edna (Berno) Clifford. She worked for the Butler Department Store and later for Dexter Shoe Company in Dexter. She lived in this area for many years and had an avid love for cats.

She was predeceased by her husband Basil Fowler, and two brothers, Donald and Kenneth Clifford. She will be missed by her children who loved her very much. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Bruce and Darlene Fowler of Niagara Falls, NY and Barry and Debra Fowler of Charleston; a daughter and her husband, Jody and Kevin Hardy of Harmony; a brother and his wife, Lawrence and Joyce Clifford of Fairfield; two sisters, Evelyn Bureau of Hampden and Clair and her husband, Dennis Smart of Unity; seven grandchildren, Nikki, Angela, Ashley, David, Cory, Abby, and Olivia; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 6-8 pm Wednesday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main St., Dexter. Funeral services will be held at 11 am Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Harold Wheeler officiating. Spring burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Dexter.

WANDA JANE P. WILEY
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Wanda Jane P. Wiley, 79, wife of Clifford L. Wiley, died unexpectedly, Feb. 11, 2002, at a local hospital. She was born Nov. 22, 1922, in Little Rock, Ark., the daughter of Herbert G. and Lota (Scott) Peacock. Wanda was a member of the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church, where she expressed her love of music, singing in the choir for many years. She was always a dedicated volunteer for church fairs. Wanda was a member of the Molasto Club and the Cosmopolitan Club. An avid bridge player, she was also well-known for her knitting. She was involved and participated in hospice training in the Dover-Foxcroft area. Wanda had worked for Dr. Ellery for many years, where she met and enjoyed many friends.

She is survived by her husband, Cliff of Dover-Foxcroft; two sons, Wade Scott of Ferndale, Mich., Jay of Topsham; a daughter, Deborah Hillman of Greene; a grandson, Nathaniel Wiley of Vinalhaven; a brother-in-law, Garland Wood of Little Rock, Ark.; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Cynthia Terrell of Little Rock, Ark.; and a special nephew, William Wood of Fayetteville, Ark., several grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Dale officiating. A time of sharing and fellowship will follow the service in the chapel. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church Scholarship Fund, 10 West Main St., Dover-Foxcroft 04426. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft.

MORRIS "PETE" WAITE
NEWPORT - Morris W. Waite, 79, died February 12, 2002 at a Pittsfield healthcare facility. He was born December 19, 1923 at Rodman, NY the son of William and Mary (Sprague) Waite. Pete worked for his best friend Ted Purington, Sr. at Maine Drilling & Blasting Company for 23 years, retiring in 1989.

He is survived by a son Ronald and wife Pam Erskine of Newport; a brother, Merle "Mike" Waite of Florida; 3 sisters, Doriene Larmon and Edna Watkins, both of New York, and Gussie Munson of Florida; 3 grandchildren, Daniel, Amanda and Jakob Erskine; and a great grand-daughter, Riley Bishop. He will also be fondly remembered by special family friends, Flora and Lawrence Erskine of Newport, their children, Larry, Debra, and Sarah, and their family's. He was predeceased by a brother Bert Sixberry, and 3 sisters, Rosetta Freeman, Ella-Mae Cowles, and Dorothy Sixberry.

Friends may call 6-8 P.M. Thursday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services will be held 1 PM Friday, February 15th, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Newport.

HELEN M. WILLIS
NEWPORT - Helen M. Willis, 73, beloved wife of Harvey E. Willis, passed away February 12, 2002 at a Pittsfield hospital after a long illness. She was born October 30, 1928 at Boston, MA the daughter of Michael and Mary (Gibbons) Carroll. She attended Boston schools and was a member of the V. F. W. Post #2125 of Bridgewater, MA. Prior to moving to Maine, Helen and Harvey operated veteran's boarding homes in Bridgewater and Brockton, MA.

She is survived by her husband of Newport; her children, Sandra and husband, Robert D. Slater of Bridgewater, MA, Donna and husband, Wayne M. Garrod of Newport, Richard L. McCaul of Sealy, TX, Barry P. and wife, Jane McCaul of Plymouth and Wayne J. McCaul of Brockton, MA; stepchildren, Donna and husband, Ronnie Fabiani of N. Newport, NH and Sandy Gowan of Hanson, MA; sisters, Elizabeth Pearson of Newport and Rose Hough of Hunnington Park, CA; 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, 3 sisters and a brother.

Friends may call 6 to 9 P. M. Friday, February 15th at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport where funeral services will be held 1 P.M. Saturday with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Newport. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Sebasticook Valley Healthcare Facility, c/o Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, ME 04953.

JAMES H. ADAMS
NEWPORT - James H. Adams, 80, died February 13, 2002 at a Bangor hospital. He was born November 29, 1921 at Unity, the son of Henry and Beatrice (Foster) Adams. He graduated from Unity High School, Class of 1938 and served in the United States Army during World War II in England, France and Germany. For 20 years, he worked at Banton's Mill in Newport and later was a janitor for 20 years at Newport Elementary School, retiring in 1983. He was a former member of the Sebasticook Valley Grange of Newport.

He is survived by a son, James S. Adams of Texas; 2 daughters, Beatrice Talmadge of Newport and Sarah Giuffreda of Arizona; a sister, Lucille of Mass.; 3 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Leona; 1 brother, Albert Adams and a sister, Helen Gould.

Friends may call 6-8 P.M. Saturday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where a Christian celebration of life will be held 1 P.M. Sunday, February 17th with the Rev. Bill Johnson officiating. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Newport. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Lung Association, 122 State Street, Augusta, ME 04330.

Friends may gather at the Newport American Legion Hall following the funeral service.

EDWARD F. CONWAY
BANGOR & DEXTER - Edward F. Conway, 63, died February 13, 2002 at an Ellsworth hospital from complications of diabetes. He was born August 31, 1938 at Dexter, the son of Francis and Marion (Bean) Conway. He graduated from Dexter High School, Class of 1956. He served 6 months in the Army Reserve. He was employed for many years as a hand sewer at Dexter Shoe Company, then as a house painter and later a cook after he graduated from the culinary program at Eastern Maine Technical College. He attended Bangor Baptist Church and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Boston Celtics.

He is survived by 3 sons, Andy and his wife Kim Conway of Dexter, Alan and his wife Angela Conway of NH and Eric and his wife Michelle Conway of Bangor; 1 daughter, Laurie and her husband Steven Sweet of Augusta; 1 brother, Francis Conway of NH; 6 grandchildren, Adam, Jordan, Alexander, Shannon, Cameron and Danyel; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter.

Memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, 10 Bangor Street, Suite F, Augusta, ME 04338. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter.
