GALEN N. SPENCER
PITTSFIELD - Galen N. Spencer, 70, died February 16, 2002 at the USVA hospital in Togus. He was born December 17, 1931 at Greenbush the son of William and Mary (Harris) Spencer. He graduated form Maine Central Institute, Class of 1951. Galen was a U.S. Army corporal working in the military nuclear weapons program. He was employed for many years at the Hartland Tannery, the Hermon Mountain Ski Area, and retired from the Edwards Company in Pittsfield in 1999.

He is survived by 2 sons, Galen Spencer of Palmyra and Scott Spencer of Clinton; 3 daughters, Tanya Spencer and April Cookson, both of Albion, and Eugena Spencer of Detroit; a brother Claremont Spencer of Pittsfield; 2 sisters, Muriel York of Pittsfield and Priscilla Grant of Brooklin; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services will be held 10 A.M. Wednesday, February 20th. Spring burial will be in the Village Cemetery, Pittsfield.

Memorial donations may be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Bangor, 654 State Street, Bangor, ME 04401.

GEORGE MARSHALL LAWLER
HARMONY - George Marshall Lawler, 77, died February 16, 2002 at Cedar Ridge Health Care Facility in Skowhegan. He was born August 1, 1924 at Oakfield a son of Marshall and Virgie (Shorey) Lawler. He married the former Madeline Giles of Harmony in 1943. He had worked for many years in bridge construction for Joe McEaron and the Farrin Brothers and was especially proud of his work on the new Harmony bridge. He also worked for Hoyt Hall in construction and finished his career working in the woods.

He was predeceased by his wife, a son James, a daughter Eleanor "Susie" Lovely, 2 brothers, Frank and Freeland, 2 sisters, Freda Fanjoy and Alice Harriman. George is survived by 3 sons, Keith and wife Ruby of Norridgewock, Allen and wife Donna of Oklahoma, Larry and wife Sandra of Harmony; 5 brothers, Maurice of California, Hector and wife Estha of Oklahoma, James and wife Phyllis, Earle and wife Nancy, all of Harmony, and Charles of Palmyra; 2 sisters, Eva Butler and Waneta Neal, both of St. Albans, and a sister-in-law, Helen Parker of Skowhegan; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and his faithful dog Sadie.

Funeral services will be held 6 P.M. Wednesday, February 20th, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main Street, Dexter. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4:30 to 6 PM. Spring burial will be in the South Road Cemetery, Harmony.

GERALDINE C. TAYLOR
DEXTER - Geraldine C. Taylor, 91, a resident of Dexter, passed away February 18, 2002 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital, following a brief illness. She was born in Bradford, December 24, 1910, daughter of Spencer H. and Inez Perkins Colbath.

Gerry, as she was affectionately called, graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston, and from Colby College in Waterville, class of 1933, with a degree in English Literature. She spent the following summer studying for her Masters Degree in London, England. Prior to her marriage to Dr. H. Lewis Taylor, she taught English at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, and also at Orono High School, in Orono. She was married to Dr. Taylor in December 1938 and made her home in Dexter where she was a member and Past President of the Dexter Women’s Literary Club. She was an avid bridge player and loved her flower gardens. She was also a great devotee of the Classics and Fine Arts.

She was predeceased by her husband in April 1995. She is survived by her daughter, Diana Taylor Paine and her husband, Jesse of Dexter and her beloved grandson, Daniel R. Slater and his wife Karen of Manchester, N.H. A Memorial service will be held 1 pm Friday February 22, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in Dexter, with Rev. Lois Merrifield officiating. Spring burial will be held 9 am, Friday May 24, 2002, at Mount Pleasant cemetery in Dexter, with Rev. Lois Merrifield officiating. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter.

VAUGHN R. FIELDS
PALMYRA - Vaughn R. Fields, 70, died February 17, 2002 at his Lang Hill Road residence. He was born January 6, 1932 at Framingham, Mass. the son of Raymond and Mary (Kearney) Fields. Vaughn moved to Maine in the early 1950's. He was a supervisor with the Thomas DiCenzo Construction Company, based in Calais, for many years, retiring in 2000.

He is survived his long-time companion Gerry; 2 sons, David P. Jones and Charles R. Fields; 3 daughters, Vicki Clark, Marguerite Fields, Mary Elizabeth and husband Corey Hubler, all of Pennsylvania; a brother Kenneth Fields of Portland, CT; a sister Wilda Neilson of Plaster Rock, New Brunswick; 7 grandchildren; 3 nephews and 2 nieces. He will be fondly remembered by Matthew and Courtney Graves.

Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services will be held at 1 P.M Thursday, February 21st, with the Rev. Michael Stephenson officiating. A reception will follow the funeral service at Barrows-Skidgel American Legion Hall, Newport. Spring burial will be in the Palmyra Village Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Bangor Street, Suite F; Augusta, ME 04338.

PAUL A. WEBSTER
DEXTER - Paul A. Webster, 43, beloved and cherished husband of Ann Langlais, died February 19, 2002, at his residence after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Paul exceeded all expectations. He survived with grace and dignity surrounded by love. Everyone was richer for having known him. He was born April 26, 1958, the son of Earl and Nadine (Brown) Webster. Paul graduated from Sterns High School in Millinocket, Class of 1976. After a year at the University of Maine, Paul lived and worked as a self-employed carpenter and in construction in Florida, Texas, and Maine. In 1990, he entered the University of Maine and graduated in 1994 with a BA degree in Zoology, graduating with distinction. During those years he was a Work-Study student and later a Research Assistant in marine biology under the direction of Dr. John H. Dearborn. Following graduation, Paul fulfilled the requirements for a teaching certificate for high school science. Paul then worked within the Bangor school system both as a substitute teacher and in the spring of 1997 in a pilot program for at-risk students. In 1997 Paul began his career teaching biology and physics at Old Town High School. He taught until 2001 when his illness would no longer allow him to teach. Paul spent much of his youth with his grandfather, Papa Brown, who inspired his love of the natural world, in particular, the woods and lakes of the Millinocket area. Paul’s innate curiosity was infectious to his family and his students. He had a broad knowledge of things in both the natural and practical world. Paul was able to articulate the most complicated subjects simply and with an exuberance that was inspiring. Paul waged a courageous ten-year battle against a rare bone cancer with a life-affirming and positive outlook. He was an inspiration to many. He lived life each and every day to the best of his ability in the midst of his close and loving family.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Langlais, a son, Jacob Louis, his parents, Earl and Nadine Webster of Millinocket; six siblings, Ross and his wife Bonnie of Greenbrae, Calif., Cindy Cram and her husband Dana of Medway, Carla Small and her husband Tom of Evansville, Indiana, Eddie and his wife Sherrie of Dixfield, Earl Jr. of Auburn, Deanna Bradley and her husband Bob of Westminster, Colorado; nieces and nephews, Travis, Dana Jr., David, Amee, Sara, Roger, Jessie, Stevie, Sammy, Aspen; two very special grand-nieces, Maria and Lydia; his parents-in-law, Leo James and Fern Langlais of Dexter; sister and brothers-in-law, Elaine Seavey of Seminole, Oklahoma, Richard Langlais of Merrimac, New Hampshire., Edward Langlais of Dexter, Kenneth Langlais of Rockwood. He will be sadly missed by special and inspiring friends John and Bethel Dearborn, Dr. James W. Turner, Jan Pilotte, and Stephanie and Matthias Gottwald. We would also like to thank all the many medical personnel at Eastern Maine Medical Center for all their kindness and compassion over the many years caring for Paul. Our heartfelt thanks go out to those involved with his hospice care, Marsha Walden, Jacquie Soucy, Dr. Lesley Fernow and Dr. James Roberts, who made it possible for Paul to die in peace and without pain. Their care and kindness will never be forgotten. Paul and his wife want to thank all the members of the family for their love, support, and prayers, because without it, Paul would never have survived.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held Saturday, February 23 at 4 p.m. at the Crosby and Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main Street, Dexter, with the Rev. Adam Tierney of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Dexter officiating. Those who do not wish to send flowers may make donations in his memory to the Palliative Care Program- Jan Pillotte, Eastern Maine Medical Center, 489 State Street, Bangor, Maine 04402-0404 or Cancer Care of Maine, 417 State Street, Bangor, Maine, 04401.

PAUL A. ERICKSON
MONSON - Paul A. Erickson, 73, died February 20, 2002 at his home in Monson. He was born June 16, 1928 in Monson, son of Erick and Helen (Russell) Erickson. He served in the US Army and was a member of the American Legion in Monson. He worked for Guilford of Maine for over 20 years.

He is survived by a daughter and her husband, Debbie and Philip Giroux of Monson; a son and his wife, John and Andrea Erickson of Germany; a sister and her husband, Beverly and Alfred Grant of Monson; 6 grandchildren, Jessica Smith of Monson, Kristi Smith of Bangor, Joshua Kinson of Monson, Brandi Erickson of Newport, Bradley Erickson of Shirley and Michelle Erickson of Germany; a niece and a nephew. He is also survived by a very special friend, Anna Pratt of Guilford.

Private calling hours will be held at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, in Guilford.Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Hillside cemetery in Monson. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Assn., Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster Street, Portland, ME 04101.

NOLA L. DUPUIS
DEXTER - Nola L. Dupuis, 58, died February 20, 2002 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital.She was born February 22,1943 in Plymouth, Mass. daughter of Columbus and Dorothy (Mueller) Benson. She worked for many years at Commonwealth Gas in Plymouth, Mass.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Antone Dupuis of Dexter; a son and his wife, Anthony and Ann Dupuis of Pembroke, Mass; a daughter and her husband Carolyn and James Bestford of Centerville, Mass; two sisters, Della Richards of Pembroke, Mass., and Melissa and her husband, Fred Smith of Carver, Mass; 4 grandchildren, Danielle, A.J., Joshua, and Mikayla; several nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by a brother, Dick Benson of Cape Canaveral, Florida.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 am Saturday, February 23rd, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main St., Dexter, Maine, with Rev. Raymond Morency of St. Anne's Catholic Church officiating.

HAROLD E. CLOUKEY
NEWPORT - Harold E. Cloukey, 76, died unexpectedly February 20, 2002 at a Bangor hospital. He was born May 24, 1925 at Wallagrass the son of Simon and Gertrude (Bouchard) Cloukey. He owned and operated apartment houses, an antique business, and a used furniture store in Hartford, CT before moving to Newport in 1977. He was an avid gardener. Harold was a communicant of St. Agnes Parish.

He is survived by his wife Rita of Newport; 4 children, Dennis and wife Michelle Cloukey of Bath, Marlene and husband Harry Wynkoop of Morrisville, NC, Lorene and husband Greg Jackson of Schenectady, NY, and Carol White of Rapid City, SD; a sister Delores Cloukey of South Windsor, CT; 28 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Sunday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM Monday, February 25th, at St. Agnes Church, 50 Detroit Avenue, Pittsfield with the Rev. Father Robert Bouchard officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot, Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 346, Augusta 04330; or to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

PHYLLIS M. AMES
PITTSFIELD - Phyllis M. Ames, 82, went to be with the Lord, to be with her loving husband, Alton, Feb. 20, 2002, following a brief illness, at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital, Pittsfield.

Family and friends may visit from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Village Cemetery, Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Burnham Baptist Church, P.O. Box 46, Burnham, ME 04922.

KENNETH L. "BUD" MILLS
NEWPORT - Kenneth L. "Bud" Mills, 88, died Feb. 20, 2002, at the Parker Ridge Assisted Living Center, Blue Hill, following a long illness. He was born in Perham, Dec. 10, 1913, the son of Frank and Myrtle (Greenlaw) Mills. He was married to Mary Fairbrother Mills, who died Oct. 20, 1987. Bud worked for Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna and for Guilford Industries in Newport and Guilford, where he operated the Dye House and had a reputation as one of the leading dyers in New England. Bud was an avid outdoors man, enjoying fishing and especially golf and he was a member of the Palmyra Golf Club. He was also an accomplished bowler and loved to read.

He is survived by his three sons and their wives, Richard and Inez Mills of Orange Park, Fla., Barry and Susan Mills of Blue Hill, Michael and Paula Mills of Hattiesburg, Miss., nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held in early May, at the family lot in Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brown Funeral Home, 34 High St., Newport.

ROSE E. (LANDRY) BURDA
AUBURN - Rose E. (Landry) Burda, 86, of 119 Providence St., Worcester, formerly of Stone Street in Auburn, died Thursday, Feb. 21, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after an illness.

Her husband, Henry P. Burda, died in 1988. She leaves a brother, Horace Landry of Florida; a sister, Simone Pooler of Michigan; nieces and nephews. A daughter, Rosemary Burda, died in 1972. She was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, daughter of Napoleon J. and Victoria A. (Langlois) Landry, and came to the United States as a child. She lived several years in Dexter, Maine, before moving to Worcester in 1950 and to Auburn in 1959. She graduated from N.H. Fay High School, Dexter, in 1933.

During World War II, Mrs. Burda was a secretary for Pratt and Whitney. While in Dexter, she was a dental assistant. She was a member of North American Martyrs Church and a founding member of the exercise program at the Auburn Senior Center, where she taught aerobics.

The funeral will be held Monday, Feb. 25, from Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. A calling hour is 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Lupus Foundation of Massachusetts, 40 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

BEATRICE "BEA" M. GRANT
ABBOT – Beatrice “Bea” M. Grant, 76, died February 23, 2002, at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born March 8, 1925 in Abbot, the daughter of Alvah and Vina (Higgins) Perkins. Bea graduated from Guilford High School in 1943. After graduation she worked for Hamilton Propeller in Hartford, CT. On returning to Maine she worked for Dakins Sporting Goods in Bangor. She then worked for Hardwood Products. From 1958 until 1991, she worked at Guilford Industries.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Erroll E. Grant Sr.; one daughter, Noreen Crocker; one son, Erroll E. Grant Jr.; three grandchildren, Tara Harper, Heidi Crocker, and Derrick Crocker; five great-grandchildren, Tia Grant, Samantha Harper and Reyanna Harper, Cameron Mushero and Cody Mushero; three cousins, Ida Greenleaf of Foxboro, MA, Betty Stebbins of Winchester, MA, and Peggy Davis of Augusta, Maine.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Abbot Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to Mayo Regional Hospital, 75 W. Main St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME, 04426. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Guilford.

DUANE C. ROBERTS
ABBOT - Duane C. Roberts, 66, died February 22, 2002 at his residence on the Leeman Road in Abbot. He was born October 1, 1935, at the family homestead in Abbot, the son of Frank and Pearle (Crozier) Roberts. A lifelong resident of Abbot, he was educated in Abbot and Guilford schools. As a boy, he grew up on “The Farm”, along with his beloved horse, “June”. As a young man he worked as a quarryman at the Portland-Monson Slate Company. In later years he worked for the Dept. of Interior as a rodman with the U.S. Geological Survey, and was a pulp truck driver for N.W. Chadbourne and Orie White in Cambridge. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias.

He is survived by four children, Richard F. Roberts, Jonathan D. Roberts, Jay F. Roberts, Timothy B. Roberts, and Robin H. Roberts; nine grandchildren, Caryn, Jason, Jennifer, Stephanie, Scott, Elijah, Bethany, Aska, and Alissa; three great-grandchildren, Mercedes, Jordan Duane, and Gaige; a brother, Dr. Norman F. Roberts; two sisters, Alma B. Jenkins, and Katheryn E. Sakahara; four nieces and nephews, and many grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Myona G. Mitchell, in 1972, and a nephew, Ronald Mitchell. He will also be remembered by his companion, Faye Davidson of Guilford.

Friends may call at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 21 Oak St., Guilford on Tuesday, Feb. 26th, from 6-8 pm. A committal service will be held later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to the Abbot Historical Society, Janice McAllister, Treas., P.O. Box 105, Abbot, ME 04406.

ODELE D. "JEANNETTE" LEWIS
DEXTER - Odele D. “Jeannette” Lewis, 92, passed away February 24, 2002 at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor after a long battle with lung cancer and many major medical complications. She was born January 24, 1910 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the oldest child of Charles and Odila (Tetreault) St. Germain. Her beloved family was the most important thing in her life; she said, “a mother’s job is to keep the family together,” and it was with great pride she boasted that she had done her job well. She touched the hearts of those who knew her, and she was loved by all.

She is survived by her children, Jeannette (Gould-Lewis) Merrill of Skowhegan, Hubert R. Lewis Sr. and his wife, Ethel of Abbot, Betty-Lou Lewis of Bangor, Charlene and her husband, W. “Randy” Randall of Bangor, Ralph Edward Lewis of Frenchboro and Clarence “CC” Lewis and his wife, Theresa of Manchester, Connecticut; 20 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 15 great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, many wonderful friends including Marguerite and Eddie Carr and Anita Ducas of Dexter; special friends, Mary C. Davis of Bangor and Dot Munson of Glenburn. She was predeceased by her first and second husbands, Alfred Gould and Harold A.O. Lewis; an infant son, Charles Edward Gould; brothers, Raymond and Edward St. Germain; sister, Alice Hebert; stepdaughter, Lena Savage and stepson, Harold Lewis.

Visitation will be from 10-11 am Tuesday February 26, 2002, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main St., Dexter, followed by funeral services at 11 am. Spring burial is being held at 1:30 p.m., May 24 at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter.
