J. Richard Murray
1998-05-14

J. Richard (Dick) Murray, Managing Director of Canada's Hudson's Bay Company from 1959 to 1973, died at his home on May 2, the exact date of the 328th anniversary of the founding of the historic company. He was 80 years old.

Murray was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1917, graduated from McGill University in Montreal with a bachelor of arts degree in 1938 and again in 1941 with a degree in law. From 1941 to 1945, Murray served in World War II as a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy.

After the war, he joined the Canadian Department of External Affairs and was posted as Foreign Services Officer, Canadian Embassy, in Washington, D.C. from 1945 to 1950. In 1951 he joined the Hudson's Bay Company, Canada's primary national retailer then based in London, England.

He rose quickly in the company, becoming president of Hudson's Bay Fur Sales, Inc. in New York City and after four years went to company headquarters in Winnipeg as General Manager for Canada. In 1959, at the age of 42, Murray was made Chief Executive Officer of the Company with the English title of Managing Director, and Vice Chairman of Hudson's Bay Oil and Gas Company, Ltd.

Murray loved the romance of the ancient Hudson's Bay Company, the world's oldest continuous enterprise. He like calling it by it's true name: ``The Company of Adventurers of England Trading Into Hudson's Bay," a vast empire that once covered a twelfth of the earth's land surface. At one time, the trading posts of the Hudson's Bay Company encompassed three million square miles stretching from the Arctic Ocean to San Francisco and from Labrador to Hawaii, making it the largest private landowner in history.

On May 2, 1970, HBC celebrated its 300 anniversary and Murray's diplomatic skills helped revise the Company's Royal Charter in order to bring the company from Britain to Canada. To mark the celebration, Queen Elizabeth II proclaimed the new version, the Hudson's Bay Company was transferred and became a Canadian company headquartered in Winnipeg. Murray also presided over the construction of a replica of the 53foot ketch Nonsuch, one of the two ships sent by Charles II which sailed from England in 1668 on an exploratory journey to the new world to bring back the first cargo of fur pelts. As part of the anniversary celebration, the Nonsuch replica sailed off Canada's shores in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The replica is now housed in Winnipeg with the Hudson's Bay Company archives.

After his retirement from HBC, Murray was named first Commissioner of the foreign Investment Review Agency in Ottawa until 1975 when he was appointed President of the Federal Business Development Bank. From 1969 to 1974, Murray served on several boards as a Director of Air Canada, Time Canada Ltd. and Great West Life Insurance Company. He was also a member of the Trilateral Commission.

Although Murray was Canadian by birth, he had deep roots in the United States. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy, Harvard Business School and served aboard the USS Texas during World War II. He lived in Washington, D.C., New York City and in 1958 bought a house on McKown Point, West Boothbay Harbor. In 1989 he became an American citizen and Maine resident, and in 1992 built a winter home in the Napa Valley, California. Murray was a member of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club.

Murray is survived by his wife, the former Sally Jean Olsen of Glen Ridge, New Jersey and Boothbay Harbor; two daughters, Madeleine Irene Murray of Sydney, Australia and Lorraine Marie Murray of Victoria, British Columbia; a sister, Pat Ford of Rochester, New York; three stepsons, a step-daughter and two grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 9 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Calistoga, Calif., with a reception following. Donations in Dick Murray's memory may be made to the Sharpsteen Museum, Box 573, Calistoga, CA 94515, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Berry and Myrtle Streets, Calistoga, CA 94515.
