Carolyn (Carol) Mercer
2000-08-24

Carolyn (Carol) Pomeroy Mercer, 91, Damariscotta, died July 14, in Portland Ore. Her winter home for many years.

She was born in Massachusetts, the daughter of Genevieve Pomeroy, and was educated in schools in Natick, Wellesley, and Boston.

She and her husband, Curt Mercer, owned and operated the “Back of the Moon” Hunting Lodge in Rangeley for many years, until her husbands death. At the time she moved to Newcastle.

She then was employed by one of the large cruise ship lines as manager of ship gift shops, providing her the opportunity to visit countries throughout much of the world.

In later years she came back home to Newcastle to assist her mother in the operation of the Newcastle Inn. After her mother’s death, she continued to run the inn for several years and subsequently sold it. At that time she began spending part of each year at her second home in Oregon.

She is survived by one sister and several nieces and nephews.

Alfred O. Olsen

Alfred Olaf Olsen, 88, died Friday, November 24 at the Gregory Wing of St. Andrews Village, Boothbay Harbor.

He was born on October 15, 1912 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Kristoffer Olsen of Salt-Selje, Norway, and Aino Lehtonen of Helsingfors, Finland, both naturalized American citizens.

The oldest of three surviving children, he attended Union College in Lancaster, Mass. He married Martha Tollefsen of Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Olsen and his family moved to up-state New York in 1952, and he avidly pursued independent studies in his lifelong interest in Biblical scholarship and church history. He was also an ardent classical violinist.

Mr. Olsen retired from Bendix Corporation in Sidney, N.Y. in 1976. In 1984, he and his wife, Martha, moved to Silver Springs in Florida, where he remained until her death on Thanksgiving Day of 1986.

Survivors include his sister, Daisy Sylvia of Lucern Valley, California; one brother, William Randolph of South Bristol; his sons, Wayne Olsen of Daytona Beach, Florida, and Jeffrey Olsen of Simsbury, Conn; five grandsons; and two great-grand-children.

A memorial service is planned at Gregory Wing.

Mr. Olsen's remains will be interred with his wife in Highland Memorial Park in Ocala, Florida. Arrangements are by Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

Geraldine E. Olson
2000-12-28

Geraldine E. Olson, 78, of Wiscasset, died Monday, December 18 at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law after a long illness.

Born on February 19, 1922 in Woolwich, she was the daughter of Nelson and Edith Bowie Rice.

She attended Morse High School in Bath, class of 1939. She went onto attend Bay Path Institute of Hartford, Conn., graduating in 1940.

Upon graduation she went to work for Pratt & Whitney as an executive secretary for ten years in East Hartford and later for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York before returning to Portland in 1960 to work for the Hartford Insurance Company for ten years. In 1986 she retired after 16 years with the Dunlap Agency in Auburn.

Mrs. Olson was active in the associations of Insurance Women of Southern Maine, Insurance Women of Androscoggin County and Charter Member of the National Association of Women in Construction.

She enjoyed her family, particularly helping raise her grandchildren for the last 15 years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Olson; and two brothers, Eugene and Elbridge Rice.

Survivors include a son, H. Carl Olson and his wife Deborah Ann; and three granddaughters, Meaghan, Rachel and Hannah, all of Wiscasset.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Kincer Funeral Home in Richmond.

John Onorato
2000-10-26

John Onorato, 97, of Edgecomb, died Tuesday, October 24, at Maine General Hospital in Augusta.

Born in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Francis and Maria G. Grandineto Onorato. He grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came to Edgecomb in 1968.

In 1928, he married Elizabeth Zaher. She died in 1981.

Mr. Onorato owned and operated Jack & Sons Auto Body Shop in Edgecomb.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ in Brunswick.

Surviving are three sons, Richard Sr. of Wiscasset, Edward of Edgecomb and Robert of Bristol; two daughters, Marie Perrello of Edgecomb and Dorothy Calabro of Perth Amboy, New Jersey; one brother, Mike of California; one sister, Pearl Sitalas; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 28 at the Church of Jesus Christ, Coombs Road, Brunswick. Burial will be in Highland cemetery in Edgecomb. Arrangements are by David E. Desmond Funeral Home of Bath.

Elizabeth Orff
2000-11-09

Elizabeth “Pam” Orff, 50, Waldoboro, passed away unexpectedly Mon., Oct. 30, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Pam was born Feb. 21, 1950 in Waldoboro, the daughter of Wilbert and Rowene Stevens Orff.

She grew up and attended Waldoboro schools, graduating from Medomak Valley High School in 1969.

She was an active member of the Willow Grange #366 in Jefferson, and serving as CWA Chairman and most recently as gatekeeper having just attended State Grange in Lewiston.

She was also a member of Lakeview Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in Jefferson, a member of Lend a Hand Club in Waldoboro and Orff’s Corner Community Church.

She enjoyed doing crafts, painting and walking her dog Skippy.

She is survived by her parents Wilbert and Rowene Orff of Waldoboro, brother, Solomon Orff and his wife Connie of Waldoboro, niece, Katherine Hodnett and great niece Kimberly Hodnett of Jefferson, step nephew, Shane Roberts of Thomaston, step niece, Heidi Pushard and husband Jeff, great step nephews, Andrew, Nicholas and Jacob all of Wales, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of life service 10 a.m. Thurs., Nov. 2, at the Orff’s Corner Community Church in Waldoboro.

Interment will follow at Orff & Achorn Cemetery, Orff’s Corner Rd., Waldoboro. The Rev. Vernon Jordan will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pam’s memory to the Lupus Group of Maine, LFA-368 Blackstrap Rd., Falmouth, 04105.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Belma M. Oxton
2000-03-23

Belma M. Oxton, 78, Wiscasset, died Fri., March 17 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

She was born in Hanford, Cal., the daughter of John F. and Maria J. (Martins) Simoes.

She attended schools in Lemoore, Calif. and in 1943 married Robert L. Oxton. In 1953 they moved to Maine and later to Wiscasset. She was employed by the Wiscasset School Department and she later worked at Douglas Photo Shop in Bath. She was employed by Bath Iron Works in the Blueprint Department and later as a receptionist retiring in 1984.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bath, the Wiscasset Senior Citizens, the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the Wiscasset Garden Club. She was also a member of the Bath Hospital Auxiliary where she volunteered in the coffee shop.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing, doing crossword puzzles and staying active as the Senior Citizens in Wiscasset.

She is survived by her husband Robert L. Oxton of Wiscasset; two sons, Richard A. Oxton and his wife Ida L. of Oakland and Robert S. Oxton and his wife Joan M. of Bath; two grandchildren, Susan Rizzo and Mollie Oxton; one great granddaughter, Jennifer Rizzo, four step-grandchildren, Frederick and Johnathon Henry, Misty Murray and Rachel Avery; seven step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wiscasset Ambulance, Wiscasset 04578. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal St., Wiscasset.

Granville F. Osier
1998-12-03

Granville "Spike" F. Osier Jr., 75, Franklin, died Nov. 20 at the Milford Whitinsville Hospital in Milford. He was the the husband of Mary (Walters) Osier to whom he had been married to for 30 years.

Born in Cushing, he was the son of the late Granville F. and Ruth (Maloney) Osier. He attended schools in Damariscotta. He had been a resident of Needham for several years before moving to Franklin 30 years ago.

Mr. Osier began his career at the Portland Iron Works in Portland. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and attained the rank of sergeant. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, American Theatre Campaign Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. Following the war, he worked for Nash Telephone in Damariscotta. For the last 30 years he worked for A.W. Greymont Excavating in Needham until his retirement.

He was an avid tractor enthusiast and enjoyed restoring antique John Deere tractors and attending tractor pulls. He was a member of the Dover VFW. He was a member of the Dover Masonic Lodge.

Besides his wife, Mr. Osier is survived by three sons, Alan Osier of Medway, Charles Puracchio of Kissimmee, Fla., and Robert Puracchio of Saugus; two daughters, Kim Piccinin of Franklin and Ellen Ferrazano of Worcester; one brother, Jim Osier of Needham; two sisters, Phyllis Brewer and Helen Simmons, both of Rockland; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Madelyn Leeman.

Relatives and friends were invited to attend his funeral service on Nov.23 at the Ginley-Crowley Funeral Home, Medway The Rev. David Stewart, pastor of the Community Church of West Medway officiated. Interment followed at St. Joseph's cemetery in Medway.

Elizabeth K. Otterson
1999-06-03

NORWAY - Elizabeth K. Otterson, age 75, of Paris Hill, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

She was born in Portland on January 24, 1924 the daughter of A. Lincoln and Lael T. King and attended Portland schools, graduating from Deering High School in 1941.

She attended Westbrook College and graduated in 1943. During World War II she participated in many of the home front activities of the Portland area, her father being the Commanding Officer of the Navy base there during the war.

After college, she moved to Boston and worked as a claims adjuster for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company.

On August 3, 1946 she married USMC Captain Donald B. Otterson.

From then until Lt. Col. Otterson's retirement in 1963, they lived at many Marine Corps bases in the U.S., including Oceanside, California; Bremerton, Washington; Quontico Marine Base in Virginia; Norfolk, Virginia and a year at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas at Military War College.

She was very active in the Red Cross Gray Lady program and with various officers' wives organizations throughout those years.

In 1963 the family moved to Paris Hill where her family had ties to the community dating back several generations. Lt. Col. Otterson died in 1970. She became a major part of the community over the next 36 years, serving for many years as the assistant postmaster at the Paris Hill Post Office.

She was supportive of many local institutions such as the Paris Hill Historical Society, the South Paris Library, the Hamlin Memorial Library on Paris Hill, and the Western Maine Art Group. She was also an avid reader and correspondent with many friends of her Marine Corps days around the world.

She is survived by three children, Elizabeth O. Wiley of Falmouth, Mark H. Otterson of Paris and Brian Otterson of Okinawa, Japan and Norway; five grandchildren, Karl J. Otterson of Paris, Joanna Otterson of Paris, Martha E. Wiley of Scarborough and Jennifer and Katharine Otterson of Okinawa; a sister, Judith Atwood of West Redding, CN; a brother, Lincoln King of Carthage, TX and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Thomas T. King of Oxford.

Services were held at the First Baptist Church of Paris Hill on June 2 with the Reverend Donald Mayberry officiating. Interment was at the Durrell Hill cemetery in Paris.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Stephens Memorial Hospital Mammography Center, to provide mammography for women in need.
