A. Lewis Barnes

HULLS COVE and PALM CITY, FLA. - A. Lewis Barnes, 65, died peacefully after a brief illness in a local hospital on Friday, Sept. 15, 2000. He will be sorely missed by his beloved wife of 18 years, Lydia McIntyre Barnes and his cats, Camden and Kittery. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Mary Houtz of Fort Worth, Texas; his brother, J. David Barnes of Pittsburgh, Pa.; four stepchildren and eight grandchildren.

He was born in Oil City, Pa., on May 4, 1935, the son of Alfred David and Rachael Marian (Kerr) Barnes. He received a BA from Allegheny College, a master’s in hotel management from Cornell University and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. Along the way, he worked for Rock Resorts and Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He was actively involved in community and church affairs and fund-raising activities in both Maine and Florida. An avid gardener and bridge player, he will be missed by his many friends and family.

A memorial service was held at Church of Our Father, Hulls Cove, on Sept. 20, with Father Chuck Bradshaw officiating. Please no flowers. Donations in Lewis Barnes’s memory may be made to the Church of Our Father, Hulls Cove.

Clarence Francis Bridges

BROOKLIN - Clarence Francis Bridges, 86, beloved husband of Margaret (McIntyre) Bridges, died peacefully Sept. 18, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born June 24, 1914, in Brooklin, the son of David and Celestia (Seavey) Bridges.

A graduate of Brooklin High School, he was a member of its Alumni Association. He served in the U.S. Army, European Theater, World War II, 392nd Field Artillery Battalion, 42nd Division. He was a member of its Veterans National Chapter and its Northeast Chapter. He was also a member of the Duffy-Wescott Post No. 85, American Legion, Blue Hill, and had served as its treasurer.

He worked for the American Can Co., Portland, and South Portland Shipyard before entering the Army in 1944. A plumber for 31 years, he retired from Frank Snow Plumbing and Heating in 1979. A member of the Blue Hill Congregational Church, he served on its board of trustees. He also served on the board of trustees for George Stevens Academy, Blue Hill.

Besides his wife of 51 years, he is survived by two daughters, Jane Wyllie, and husband, Duane, of Milford, Ohio, Anne Bridges and husband, Paul Bates, of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sons, David Bridges and wife, Diane, of Fort Yukon, Alaska, Richard Bridges and wife, Janet, of Augusta; his grandchildren, Chad and Scott Wyllie, Gabriel and Jamie Bridges, Joanna and David Bridges, Elizabeth Bates, Lewis, Andrew and Jolene Firmin, and Gavin Refredi; a sister, Celia Laughlin of Brooklin; and three nieces. He was predeceased by a sister, Florence Carter, who died in 1986.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at the Blue Hill Congregational Church. Private burial will be at Mt. Ephraim Cemetery, North Brooklin. Elizabeth S. "Lisbe" Smith

LEWISBURG, PA. - Elizabeth S. "Lisbe" Smith, 82, of 9 Honeylocust Dr., died Sept. 11, 2000, at her home following an extended illness. She was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Percy D. and Jenny P. (Foster) Siverd. She was married for 58 years to Dr. Manning Smith, a retired professor of chemistry at Bucknell University.

She was a summer resident of Winter Harbor for many years.

She was a 1941 graduate of Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where she earned her BA in English. She taught for one year at Lunenberg High School in Massachusetts.

Earlier in her life, Mrs. Smith was active in the Girl Scouts of America, Lewisburg; was a member of the Bucknell University Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); in the late 1970s and early 1980s, she was a director of a program affiliated with the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit in which she went to senior centers in Union and Snyder counties and organized programs that provided participants with insights into Pennsylvania history by the use of speakers and trips.

She was interested in improving the way of life for migrant workers in rural Pennsylvania. She was involved in the Fair Employment Practices Commission, whose focus was on improving working and housing conditions and the educational needs of migrant workers. She was also interested in the women’s movement.

Mrs. Smith was a very active, longtime member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Lewisburg, where she served on the Vestry Committee; was director of the Church Effort at Haven Ministry, Sunbury, for many years; was a lay leader; served on the altar guild; was a Sunday school teacher; and served on various other church committees.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are one daughter, Betsy Smith of Philadelphia; two sons, Paulson F. Smith of New Berlin, Pa., and Albert Smith III of Montoursville, Pa.; one sister, Nancy Shrader of Cleveland, Ohio.

A service of remembrance will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 255 S. Derr Dr., Lewisburg, by the Rev. Mother Lynn Carter-Edmands. Committal service will follow in the St. Francis Garden of the church. Contributions in Mrs. Smith’s memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 255 S. Derr Dr., Lewisburg, PA 17837. Rudolph August Johnson

SULLIVAN - Rudolph August Johnson, 84, died Sept. 13, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born Oct. 4, 1915, in Astoria, Queens, New York City, the son of Charles L. and Anna (Brumberg) Johnson.

He served in the Coast Guard during World War II, and married Helen Torrey from Winter Harbor, Oct. 5, 1946. Rudy worked as a longshoreman and in retail sales in New York City until moving with his family to Winter Harbor in 1953. In Maine, Rudy was a lobster fisherman and lobster broker until his retirement in 1979. While his sons were growing up, Rudy was actively involved in Little League baseball, Boy Scouts, the local school board and town government, and was a member of the Winter Harbor Baptist Church for more than 20 years. Since 1997, he was an active member of the Faith Community Fellowship of Ellsworth. Having grown up in New York City, he was a longtime New York sports fan, and was especially proud of the Yankees domination of baseball in the 20th century.

Rudy is survived by his beloved wife of 14 years, Toni B. Johnson; two sons, Charles E. Johnson and his wife, Jennifer, of Old Town, Alan L. Johnson and his wife, Ginger, of Winter Harbor; a stepdaughter, Gail Stamp and her husband, Jim, of Sullivan. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Michelle Wellington of Richland, Wash., Karrie Johnson of Southwest Harbor, Kathy Johnson of Southwest Harbor, Matthew Johnson of Bangor, Melissa DeCarlo of Bar Harbor, Torrey Johnson of Little Deer Isle and Morgan Witham of Grinnell, Iowa, as well as two nephews and a niece, Edward (Whitey) Ford), Richard Johnson and Debbie Johnson; many great-grandchildren, grandnieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Sept. 15 at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with Dr. Robert Crosthwaite officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Winter Harbor. If friends wish, memorial donations may be made to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, 50 Union St., Ellsworth or the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 346, Augusta 04332-0346.

Paul Sherwood

DEER ISLE - Paul Sherwood of Deer Isle passed away after a brief illness Sept. 21, 2000, at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Joseph and Rose (Hertzberg) Sherwood.

Paul loved the ocean and spent a great deal of time on the beaches of Coney Island, Brighton Beach and the Rockaways. Always a sports enthusiast, he was active playing handball, tennis, and also jogging daily and attending gym classes. He started working at an early age and continued to work in order to complete his education through high school, college, law school and engineering school.

Paul attended City College of New York, then transferred to St. John’s University and Law School in Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon graduation from law school, he was admitted to the New York State Bar and practiced law in New York City. At the start of World War II, he enlisted in the Signal Corps, which enrolled him in Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., to study electrical engineering. After completing his engineering degree, he became a patent attorney with a degree in law and engineering. He was transferred to the Air Force and served time in Dayton, Ohio, and was there assigned as an Air Force patent attorney to Fort Meads. His last tour of duty was at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. Paul retired after 27 years of service and started a general law practice in Stonington. He also served as town manager of the Town of Stonington.

Paul was a member of the New York State Bar, the New York Court of Appeals, the Maine Bar, and the Supreme Court of the United States of America. He received a medal for excellence from the U.S. Air Force and was honored many times by the Armed Services. Paul traveled frequently all over Europe and the United States to his field offices. He was a member of the Odd Fellows of Maine and served as attorney and secretary of the Stonington Sewer District. He was also a complaint justice for Hancock County.

Paul is survived by his wife, Johanna G. Sherwood of Deer Isle; three children and their families, Jaquelyn Sue Chandler and her husband, Michael, of Swampscott, Mass.; their two children, Rachel Lauryn Chandler of Lowell, Mass., and Bradley Garth Chandler and his wife, Gail, of Louisville, Ky., and their daughter, Ashley Elizabeth Chandler; Dr. Keith A. Sherwood and his wife, Kim Marie, their three daughters, Erin Keegan Sherwood, Talia Anne Sherwood and Keelyn Rose Sherwood, all of Cooper City, Fla.; and Justine Louise Sherwood of Camden; a brother, Alfred Sherwood of Fort Lauderdale, Fla; a niece and nephew.

A funeral service was held Sept. 24, 2000, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Main Street, Stonington, with Rabbi Brettler of Congregation Beth Israel in Bangor officiating. Interment was in Mt. Rest Cemetery, Stonington.

Lawrence C. Hadley

BAR HARBOR - Lawrence C. Hadley, 76, of Bar Harbor, died in a local hospital on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000. He was born in Bar Harbor, the son of Benjamin L. and Mary (Chase) Hadley, on Feb. 12, 1924.

After graduating from the Bar Harbor schools in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater. On Sept. 7, 1947, he married Mary Helen Sherman of Bar Harbor. He attended the University of Maine and graduated with a degree in wildlife management in 1950.

He began his career with the National Park Service as a ranger in Shenandoah National Park. His many assignments took him to Blue Ridge Parkway, Yellowstone National Park, the regional office in Santa Fe, N.M. He became the superintendent of White Sands National Monument, Central Capital Parks in the Capital Parks Region of Washington, D.C., Colonial National Historical Park and Yosemite National Park. In 1970, he became the assistant director of Park Management in the Washington, D.C., office and from there he transferred to superintendency of Cape Cod National Seashore.

In 1979, he retired to Bar Harbor. He enjoyed an active retirement, being associated with the College of the Atlantic, the MDI Hospital, Maine Sea Coast Mission, Jesup Memorial Library, Village Improvement Association and the Bar Harbor Historical Society. He was a member of Saint Saviour’s Episcopal Church, having served on the vestry. For a short time he was acting town manager of Bar Harbor and lately had been president of the Bar Harbor Water Co.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years and their children, Scott L. Hadley and wife, Sally, of Lamoine, Lucinda McPhee and husband, John, of Clifton Park, N.Y., and Stephen W. Hadley and wife, Marie, of Seattle, Wash., and grandchildren, Daniel S. Hadley, Brian P. McPhee, Meghan L. McPhee and Elise M. Hadley.

A memorial service was held Sept. 27, 2000, at St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church, Bar Harbor, with the Rev. Edwin A. Garrett III officiating. The family requests no flowers. Elsie M. Wentworth

MANSET - Elsie M. Wentworth, 91, died Sept. 24, 2000, at an MDI health-care facility. She was born May 31, 1909, on Cranberry Isle, the daughter of Will and Minnie Harper.

She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Seal Cove. Elsie worked many years for Stinson Packing Co.

She is survived by two daughters, Lillian Hodgdon and Betty Wass, both of Bernard; a sister, Margaret Farmer of Deer Isle; eight grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law, Charlotte Rich. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Wentworth, and her son, Leslie Neal Rich.

A graveside service was held Sept. 27, 2000, at Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

Charles D. Kittredge

RIO RANCHO, N.M. - Charles D. Kittredge, 53, a resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000. Charles was born in Ellsworth on Jan. 21, 1947, the son of Russell M. and Florence Davis Kittredge.

He graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1965, Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield in 1966, and also from the Bentley College of Accounting and Finance in Waltham, Mass. Charles had worked for the Scott Paper Co. in Winslow, Irving Tanning Co. in Hartland, Brunswick Co. in Torrington, Conn., American Tel Group, Albuquerque, N.M., Highway Supply, Albuquerque, N.M. He was a member of the Institute of Management Accountants. He was a sports fan, a nature enthusiast, and loved to work in his garden. Charles was married to Donna Bodman on Sept. 18, 1971 in Waterville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Russell, in 1989. Charles is survived by his wife, Donna, of Rio Rancho; two daughters, Jill and Suzanne Kittredge of Albuquerque; mother, Florence Kittredge of Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, Dr. John Kittredge of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Charles Russell Sherwood and Jacob Alan Sherwood; aunts, Rita D. Welch of Hancock, Anne G. Huggins of Bucksport, Sylvia D. Pierce of North Stonington, Conn., and Elsie Davis of Ellsworth; nine nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins.

The service for Charles will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Memorials may be made to the Ellsworth Public Library, Ellsworth, ME, the Birdsacre Wildlife Sanctuary, Ellsworth, ME, or the Sandia Hospice, Music Therapy Dept., 4725 Indian School Rd. Patricia (Doran) Smith

SEARSPORT - Patricia (Doran) Smith, 72, died Sept. 25, 2000, at a Belfast nursing facility. She was born Aug. 4, 1928, in London, England, the daughter of Patrick and Adelaide (Cox) Doran.

As a young girl, she was evacuated during World War II from London to Kent in southern England, where she witnessed Nazi bombers, buzz bombs, and Nazi paratroopers, as well as many other facets of war.

She worked most of her life raising her family. She loved her boys and her grandchildren dearly. She was active in charities such as the March of Dimes and other children’s charities. She was an avid reader, loved gardening, nature, and most of all the sea. She loved to knit and crochet, and she created many beautiful items for her family. Everyone who came in contact with her was touched by her compassion, love and light.

She will be sadly missed by her husband of 47 years, David L. Smith of Searsport; five sons, David P. of Searsport, Michael J. of Jackson, Peter A. of Searsport, Patrick L. of Franklin, and Mark A. of Searsport; four grandchildren, Brittany, Mark, Autumn and Andrea; seven brothers and sisters, Peter Doran of Hants, England, Maureen Doran, John Doran, Ande Doran, all of London, England, Bernard Doran of Hamburg, Germany, Julie Kastner of Berlin, Germany, and Nicola Doran of Glasgow, Scotland.

Visitation for family and friends will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Young Funeral Home, 31 West Main St., Searsport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Belfast, with Father Chris Piselli officiating. Interment will follow in Village Cemetery, Searsport.

John H. Wibby Sr.

YARMOUTH - John H. Wibby Sr. of Yarmouth, died Aug. 12. 2000, at Coastal Manor where he resided. He was born July 10, 1911, in Washburn and graduated from Washburn High School. He also attended Ricker Junior College and graduated from Colby College, where he was a member of DU fraternity.

Mr. Wibby lived and worked in Bangor for 35 years, where he was a member of the Bangor Kiwanis Club. He was employed at WLBZ radio and television and retired as chief engineer in 1970 to Hancock Point and Zephyrhills, Fla.

One of his most memorable accomplishments was the coverage of the Bar Harbor fire in 1947 for NBC. Mr. Wibby also installed and maintained Bangor’s first two-way radio system for the police and fire departments.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, J. Glenna Prouty Wibby of Yarmouth; two sons, John Wibby Jr. of Yarmouth and Dr. Wayne Wibby of Bangor; and a daughter, Lynne W. Nelson of Portland, Ore. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Charles Alfred Heney

ORONO and SURRY - Charles Alfred Heney, 79, died Aug. 13, 2000, at Courtland Living Center, Ellsworth. "Chuck" was born in New York City on Oct. 18, 1920, the son of Charles Francis and Elsa Pauline (Hané) Heney. Until his recent illness, he had been a resident of Orono and spent his summers at Contention Cove, Surry.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Priscilla (Marden) Heney of Blue Hill; one son, Charles Scott Heney of Surry; a brother, John Francis Heney and his wife, Beatrice, of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at the Congregational Church of Blue Hill, with the Rev. Dr. Vesta Kowalski of St. Francis By-the-Sea Episcopal Church celebrant. In lieu of flowers, friends are requested to make memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St. Portland, ME.

Melva I. Cote

ELLSWORTH - Melva I. Cote, 73, died Aug. 22, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born Jan. 16, 1927, in Old Town, the daughter of Ralph and Ethelyn (Smith) Thurston. She liked to go for rides and visit with people and loved being with her dog, Sandy.

She is survived by one son, Kenneth Cote of Rockland; one brother, Ralph Thurston of West Old Town; five sisters, Norma Moulton of Hudson, Maxine Crosby of Olamon, Phyllis Zotti of Summit, N.J., Gloria Bubar of Charleston, and Janice Ciccarello of Center Ossipee, N.H.; five grandchildren, Kimberly, Sarah, Andy, and Amber, all of Bangor and Kenny of Hermon; two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Maykala of Bangor. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Leon Cote and a sister, Doris Commeau.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at Evergreen Cemetery, Otis, with the Rev. Leo James Michaud officiating. Donations in Melva’s memory may be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church Building Fund, 231 Main St., Ellsworth. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

John G. Starr III

TRENTON - John G. Starr III, 51, died Aug. 18, 2000, at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., April 25, 1949, the son of John G. Starr II and Carlotta (Samson) Starr Kerr.

Surviving are his wife, Laura (Hudson) Starr of Trenton; one daughter, Rachael H. Starr-Jordan and her husband, Joe, of Florida; mother and father-in-law, Carol and Thomas Hudson of Veazie; three sisters-in-law, Sarah Hudson and Caroline Hudson, both of Castine, Nancy Talbot and her daughter, Chrystina Talbot, both of Hampden.

Robert E. "Bob" Betts Sr.

SUNSHINE - Robert E. "Bob" Betts Sr., 69, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at his daughter’s home after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Deer Isle Dec. 24, 1930, the son of Leo and Mary (Davis) Betts.

Bob graduated from McKinley High School in Deer Isle, Class of 1947. He attended the J.M. Wright Technical School and became a journeyman tool and die maker. Bob also was owner and operator of Betts Seafood in Deer Isle. He also attended the U.S. Army Ordnance School in Atlanta, Ga., as an automotive machinist in the general depot. He earned the Connecticut Manufacturing Association top award in tool and die making. Bob was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the 366th aviation Engineering Battalion in Pusan, Korea. He was also a member of the American Helicopter Society, a charter member of the VFW Post in Ridgefield, Conn., a former member and past grand knight of Marquette Council No. 245 of the Knights of Columbus in Ridgefield, Conn., and a member of the Hollywood Board of Realtors and Florida Hotel and Motel Association.

Bob is survived by five daughters, Donna Richards and her husband, Oswald, of Hollywood, Fla., Pamela Kofton and her husband, David, of Sunshine, Suzanne Betts of Charlotte, N.C., Sandra Betts of Sunshine, and Michelle Kirouac and her husband, Ralph, of Norwalk, Conn.; two sons, Brian Betts and his wife, Robin, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Thomas Betts and his wife, Wendy, of Denver, N.C.; two sisters, Charlotte Smith of Bath, N.C., and Anna Gallichio of Providence, R.I.; 12 grandchildren; a very special friend, Linda Zanke of Stonington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob was predeceased by a son, Robert E. "Bobby" Betts Jr., in April 2000.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 23, 2000, at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Stonington, with the Rev. Jack O’Hara, presider. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery, Sunshine. Agnes L. Tinker

STONINGTON - Agnes L. Tinker, 86, died Aug. 21, 2000, at the Island Nursing Home, Deer Isle. She was born Oct. 23, 1913, in Milbridge, the daughter of Curtis M. and Lillian (Jones) Robinson.

She used to work at Port Clyde Sardine Factory in Stonington for many years. Agnes worked hard knitting heads for lobster traps for fishermen for many years. She absolutely loved Bingo.

Agnes is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Clarke of Methuen, Mass.; three sisters, Evelyn Newenham, Juanita Drisco, and Edith Kelley; two grandsons, Ryan Hayward of Stonington and Jared Hayward of Deer Isle. She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence L. Tinker; three brothers, Robert, Everett and Richard Robinson; one sister, Lucretia Morse; and a grandson, Clarence "Mel" Hayward.

A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at the Greenwood Cemetery, Stonington, with Harry Vickerson officiating.
