Nelson Collins Leland

SOMESVILLE - Nelson Collins Leland, 86, died Aug. 22, 2000, at Golden Acres Elderly Boarding Home in Franklin. He was born April 23, 1914, in Somesville, the son of Roy and Ada (Brown) Leland.

Nelson graduated from Gorham Normal School in 1933 and began a lifetime career as an educator. He later studied at the University of Maine, receiving his BS degree in 1953 and Master of Education in 1956. He taught in Mount Desert, Bar Harbor, Westbrook, South Portland, and Bangor, a total of 40 years.

In 1942, Nelson enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he studied to be a dental technician and served in that capacity in the United States and on the island of Guam in the South Pacific.

He was actively involved in the Somesville Union Meeting House, UCC, the Somesville Library, Somesville Historical Society, Retired Teachers Association and numerous other organizations. His hobbies were sailing, camping, dramatics and travel.

He is survived by one brother, Charles, and his wife, Edith, of Hancock; one nephew, Tom, and his wife, Jane, of Ellsworth; and several cousins.

Friends are invited to call 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at the Somesville Meeting House, UCC, with the Rev. David Stillman officiating. Rodney Pennington Cookman

BLUE HILL - Rodney Pennington Cookman, 73, died peacefully at his farm on Aug. 17, 2000. He was born Dec. 5, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Margaret (Shober) and Rodney Pennington Cookman Sr.

He graduated from the Episcopal Academy, Merion, Pa., and received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and a MAT from Harvard University. He served in the USAF from 1945 to 1947, and was employed by Weyerhaeuser Timber Co. From 1961 to 1969, he taught English and was assistant to the headmaster at Solebury School, New Hope, Pa. From 1969 to 1970, he was assistant to the president of Trenton State College. In 1970, he moved to Blue Hill and from 1970 to 1974, he taught English at George Stevens Academy. In 1975, he founded Spring Ledge Greens, a wholesale and mail order Christmas wreath business. Since 1987, he was employed as a real estate broker with Shepard’s Select Properties in Blue Hill. He had been active on his farm, which includes sheep and other livestock. For 10 years, he was county committeeman and chairman of the Hancock County ASCS. He founded the Blue Hill Farmer’s Market; was livestock superintendent of the Blue Hill Fair for 10 years; and was a founding board member of the Blue Hill Heritage Trust.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy; a son, Benjamin Cookman and his wife, Teri; a daughter, Bouzha Cookman and her husband, Bill Lehr; three grandsons, Alexander, Jonathan and Brian.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at First Congregational Church, Blue Hill. Donations in Rodney’s memory may be made to the Blue Hill Heritage Trust Capital Fund, Water Street, Blue Hill, or Hancock County Home Care/Hospice, P.O. Box 156, Blue Hill 04614. Nellie Irene (Walls) Rich

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Nellie Irene (Walls) Rich, wife of the late Lyford Judson Rich, died peacefully at home with her family on Aug. 21, 2000, after a brief illness with cancer. She was born March 23, 1919, in West Tremont, the daughter of Alvin and Bessie (Reed) Walls and the granddaughter of Nathan Adam and Emma (Mitchell) Reed and Otis and Katherine (Murphy) Walls.

Nellie attended the Tremont schools and graduated from Pemetic High School in Southwest Harbor in 1937. During World War II, she worked at the Viedes Root defense plant in Hartford, Conn., for five years. She returned to Maine in 1978, following her retirement from Parker Brothers in Salem, Mass., after 17 years of service.

Nellie was a past member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Southwest Harbor and an active member of the Tremont Ladies Aid.

Nellie was predeceased by her husband of 53 years. She leaves behind five children, Fred Rich and his wife, Virginia, of Town Hill, Thomas Rich and his wife, Julie, of Chelmsford, Mass., Pamela Reed of Southwest Harbor, Valeria Allen and her special friend, Tom Brown, of Haverhill, Mass., and Crystal Vorrasi of Virginia. She also leaves behind her sister, Mildred (Rich) and her husband, Lawrence Dodge, of Bernard; two brothers, Nathan Walls and his wife, Myrtle, of Ellsworth and Gerald Walls and his wife, Jo Ann, of Bass Harbor. She will be sadly missed by her 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at Fernald Funeral Chapel, Main Street, Mount Desert. In lieu of flowers, Nellie requested those who wish to remember her in a special way to send a donation to the Tremont Ladies Aid Society or the Southwest Harbor/Tremont Ambulance Fund.

Gerald Haynes

SEARSPORT - Gerald Haynes, 90, of Searsport, died Aug. 16, 2000, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 18, 1909, in Bar Harbor, to Julia (Henderson) and William Haynes.

He had resided at Bayview Manor from 1981 to Aug. 15, 2000. He was a pleasant man and loved by the staff at Bayview Manor. When he wanted to talk to a staff member, he would say, "Hey, girlie." He liked to joke and tease the staff. He liked talking about the times that he and his cousins would go hunting and not always do the "legal thing" and laugh. He loved to talk about growing a garden and all of the food that his mother could can for the winter. He would state that they were never lacking for canned food in the wintertime. Gerald enjoyed going to Owls Head Transportation Museum to look at the old airplanes. Recently he went on an overnight camping trip with other friends from Bayview. When he returned, he talked and talked about how much he enjoyed cooking over the open campfire. Gerald enjoyed good food and going to the Weathervane Restaurant to eat scallops by the water. He enjoyed yearly trips to the Brooklin and Stonington area with his many friends from Bayview. He would never miss the Blue Hill Fair in the fall. Gerald is survived by several cousins.

A graveside service was held Aug. 21, 2000, at South Blue Hill Cemetery, with Pastor Clifford Gall of the Full Gospel Church of Searsport officiating. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

Jack K. Farmer

WINTER HARBOR - Jack K. Farmer, 72, died unexpectedly at his home Aug. 18, 2000. He was born June 6, 1928, at Linden, N.J., the son of Forrest and Isabel (Paulk) Farmer.

In 1946 he joined the Navy and served until 1969, retiring as a CTCS from NSGA, Winter Harbor, where he continued to work for the Navy Exchange for the next 15 years. He was a member of the U.S. Navy Cryptologic Veterans Association.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sara (Livingston) Farmer; three daughters, Betty Jo Williams and her husband, Steve, of Fitzgerald, Ga., Joanie Stanwood and her husband, Gary, of Steuben and Denise Cribb and her husband, Charles, of Fitzgerald, Ga; one son, Jack Farmer Jr. and his wife, Michele, of Newburg; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Williams and her husband, Phil, of Nevato, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Aug. 22, 2000, at Greenwood Cemetery, Winter Harbor, with the Rev. Bill Somerville officiating. Faith Marie Neale

ELLSWORTH - Faith Marie Neale was born and died Aug. 22, 2000, at a Bangor hospital, the infant daughter of Debra A. (Donnelly) and Joel R. Neale, and sister of Bailey C. Neale. Go with all of our love, little girl. Services will be private. Arrangements are in the care of Jordan Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Hans J. Heiniger

TRENTON - Hans J. Heiniger, DVM, Ph.D, 61, died Aug. 1, 2000, after a prolonged and ardent battle against cancer; he was allowed to die peacefully at home. He was born Aug. 30, 1938, in Burgdorf, Berne (Switzerland), the son of Hans Manfred and Elisabeth Klara (Enzler) Heiniger.

Hans’ pre-clinical education was at the University of Geneva, 1959, Anatomy and Physiology were at the University of Berne, 1961. His DVM State Board for Veterinary Medicine, University of Berne, 1963, and his Dr. med.vet., Ph.D Thesis, University of Berne in 1965.

He received the following appointments: from 1963-1967, assistant professor, Institute of Pathology, Medical School, University of Berne, Switzerland; 1967-1970, staff scientist and head of the Laboratory of Cell Biology and Animal Resources, Institute of Nuclear Medicine, Kernforschungsanlage, Julich, Germany; 1970-1986, senior staff scientist and assistant director for animal resources, The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor; 1986-1994, president and chief executive officer, Red Cross Foundation Central Laboratory, Blood Transfusion Service, Swiss Red Cross, Berne, Switzerland; 1994-1996 executive vice president and chief scientific officer, Hemasure Inc., Marlboro, Mass.; 1996-present, chairman, Scientific Advisory Board, chief scientist, Hemasure Inc., Marlboro, Mass.; 1998-present, international private consultant in Plasma Products, Strategies, Acquisitions, Investments.

Hans was a member of the following organizations and received the past and present international appointments: he was an honorary member of the Volunteers of the Trenton Fire Department; a member of the Downeast Chapter Model T Ford Club of America; member of the ICLAS (International Council of Laboratory Animal Science); member of the UICC (International Union Against Cancer); professor of immunobiology, Medical School, University of Berne, Switzerland; vice chairman of the board of the Committee on Blood Transfusion and Hematology, Council of Europe, Strasbourg, France; member of the Executive Board of EPFA (European Plasma Fractionation Association); chairman of the Advisory Board to the Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Geneva Switzerland; member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the WHO Programs on GBSI (Global Blood Safety Initiative); director of the WHO Collaborating Centre in Transfusion Medicine and Plasma Fractionation; treasurer and member of the Executive Board of ISBT (International Society of Blood Transfusion) 1992-2000; honorary member of the International Society of Blood Transfusion, July 2000; member of 13 professional associations; and he has more than 90 publications in referenced scientific literature.

He is survived by his wife, Ursula (Aebischer) Heiniger; two daughters, Anna-Barbara Heiniger of Santa Fe, N.M., and Christina Heiniger of Lamoine; and extended family.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at Haynes Cemetery, Oak Point Road, Trenton, with the Rev. Mary-Carol Griffin officiating. Marguerite Hamblen Hancock

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Marguerite Hamblen Hancock, 94, died Aug. 9, 2000, at a Bar Harbor health-care facility. She was born June 25, 1906, in Southwest Harbor, the daughter of Walter H. and Bernice (Murphy) Hamblen.

She lived in Southwest Harbor for all but two years of her life, until she moved to a Bar Harbor health-care facility. Marguerite began working as a night operator for the telephone company while she was in high school. She retired in 1956 when the dial system was introduced to MDI. She was active in the Congregational Church of Southwest Harbor and a former secretary of the Women’s Fellowship, a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and a member of the OES, Rebekah Lodge.

Marguerite is survived by her daughter, Grace Bernice and her partner, Wallace Klausky, of Venice, Fla.; two sisters, June Sanner of Southwest Harbor and Winifred Hodgkins of Sullivan; granddaughters, Cynthia Lord and husband, Stephen, of Peabody, Mass.; grandsons, David Gaiser and wife, Ursula, of Bradford, Utah, Dr. Ted Gaiser and partner, Charles Hornburger, of Brighton, Mass., and Parsonsfield, and Robert Gaiser and wife, Elizabeth, of Southwest Harbor; great-grandchildren, Jaclyn Mine and Stephen Lord of Massachusetts and Dexter Gaiser of Vermont; several nieces and nephews of New England and Illinois. Marguerite was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Ted D. Hancock, and her five brothers, G. Hilton, Dwight, Wilder, Ben and Stanwood.

A funeral service was held Aug. 12, 2000, at Fernald Funeral Home, Mount Desert, with Dr. Ted J. Gaiser officiating. John F. Anderson

FARMINGDALE - John F. Anderson, 82, formerly of Vaughn Street, Farmingdale, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. He was born in Brooklin on March 25, 1918, one son of 13 children of Adelbert and Christine O’Donnell Anderson.

A graduate of Brooklin High School, John attended the University of Maine at Orono. He was a retired chief of Shore Fisheries for the State of Maine with 20 years of service. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was stationed in Hawaii at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. He was a member of the Conservation Law Enforcement Association, past president of the Law Enforcement Association of Maine, past commander of Post 159 - Kennebunkport, past president of the Kiwanis Club of Gardiner, member of American Legion Post No. 2 - Augusta. John lived most of his life in Farmingdale and his early retirement years in Dareport Bay, Fla., and summer cottage at Sheepscot Lake in Palermo.

He enjoyed boating, golfing, fishing, clamming. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ernestine Kierstead Anderson, who died Oct. 13, 1987.

He is survived by three children, Richard John Anderson and and Douglas F. Anderson, both of Farmingdale and Andra Leavitt of South Portland; stepdaughter, Sharon Estes of Boston, Mass.; his brother, Lincoln Anderson of Bath; three grandchildren, Abraham, Crystal and Morgan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Committal services with military honors were held Aug. 29, 2000, at the Fr. LeClair Memorial Chapel in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. The family requests contributions in his memory to a charity of your choice. Arrangements under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

George A. Stover

BLUE HILL - George A. Stover, 90, died July 28, 2000, at a Penobscot health-care facility. He was born Oct. 10, 1909, in Blue Hill, the second son of Harvey S. and Madora "Dora" (Conary) Stover.

George attended Blue Hill schools and graduated from George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill in 1929. George was a veteran of World War II. Before and after his term in the Army Air Force, he was employed by Lever Brothers in Cambridge, Mass. He was a life member of Duffy-Wescott Post No. 85 American Legion and the Blue Hill Historical Society. He was also a member of Anah Temple Shrine, Hancock County Shrine Club, Blanquefort Commandery, Ira Berry Lodge AF & AM of Blue Hill, and the Blue Hill Odd Fellows. George was a member of the Blue Hill Fair Association for many years, acting as director of racing. He was a member of the Blue Hill Hospital Corporation. He attended the Blue Hill Congregational Church. For most of his life, George was a truck driver for Grindle’s Express, out of Blue Hill; also trucking firms in Cambridge, Mass. He later trucked boats for Webber’s Cove Boat Co. to many states. For several years he had the Blue Hill Taxi until ill health made it impossible. He enjoyed fishing, boating, horse racing, and attending the January Maine Fair Association meetings, usually held in Portland.

He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Arlene (Marshall) Stover; many nieces, nephews, and special friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Maurice, Joseph Lincoln and Clifford; three sisters, Etta Stover Patterson, Mary Stover Follett and Margaret Stover Ryan Loden.

A funeral service was held July 31, 2000, at Blue Hill Congregational Church, with the Rev. Robert McCall officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the George and Arlene Stover Scholarship Fund, care of the Headmaster, George Stevens Academy, RR 1 Box 2600, Blue Hill 04614; or to the Activity Fund of Penobscot Nursing Home, Box 15, Penobscot 04476. Frederick L. Snowman Sr.

EASTBROOK and SCARBOROUGH - Frederick L. Snowman Sr., 70, of Roaring Brook Road, Eastbrook, and 5 Mayflower Dr., Scarborough, died Aug. 3, 2000, at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a long illness. He was born in Orland, the son of Frederick and Dorothy Saunders Snowman.

He attended Orland and Bucksport schools, Husson College, and the University of Maryland. Mr. Snowman, a patriot, entered the U.S. Army Air Force in 1947 and retired in 1967. He served on the Berlin Air Lift, in the Korean War, Iceland, France, and the Vietnam War. Mr. Snowman served as the Air Force recruiter for York County in Maine, recruiting pilots, engineers, lawyers and other professionals, for a total of 650 personnel for the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Snowman was recognized by the courts and nationally as an expert on worker’s compensation matters for the National Council on Worker’s Compensation, retiring in 1995. In 1990, Mr. Snowman and legal council organized the first Fraud and Abuse Unit for the Maine Worker’s Compensation Commission, serving as supervisor and fraud investigator. Mr. Snowman was a Master Mason in Lygonia Lodge No. 40 AF & AM and Hancock County Shrine Club of Ellsworth, a York Rite Mason and a member of the Anah Temple Shrine, Bangor.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Alice Gabriel Snowman of Eastbrook and Scarborough; sons, Frederick M. Snowman and Michael J. Snowman of Scarborough, John B. Snowman of Dallas, Texas; and daughter, Barbara Snowman Leonard of Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren, Michelle and Jennifer Snowman of Scarborough, Samantha, Kimberly and Jack Snowman of Dallas, Texas; two sisters, Joyce Tripp of South Paris and Joanne Schilling of Rockledge, Fla.; and his mother, Dorothy Saunders Billings.

A funeral service was held Aug. 8, 2000, at the Orland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tracey Reeves officiating. Interment with military honors was held at Maine Veteran’s Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Snowman’s memory can be sent to the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine, 100 U.S. Rt. 1, Scarborough 04074. Pauline (Morse) Norris

PORTLAND - A memorial service will be held for Pauline (Morse) Norris on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Pine Tree cemetery on Route 1 in Hancock. A reception will follow at the home of Chester and Ulla Norris, Deer Run, off Shore Road, Lamoine. All friends are cordially invited.

Mary "Mollie" Weare Birdsall

PENOBSCOT - Mary "Mollie" Weare Birdsall, 67, died Aug. 26, 2000, at Horsepower Farm. She was born Nov. 9, 1932, the daughter of Nora and Peter Baldwin, and later took the name of her stepfather, Buel F. Weare.

She graduated from Chatham Hall, Chatham, Va., and spent a year at Vassar College. The early years of her marriage to Paul Birdsall were spent in Middletown, Conn., where she headed the local district nurse board and coached as a volunteer girls’ field hockey and softball at the Independent Day School, Middlefield, Conn.

In 1972, with her husband, Paul, she established Horsepower Farm in Penobscot. She felt that her greatest challenge was learning to farm and then turning around and teaching these skills to farm apprentices, of whom there have been more than 120. Having a network of like-minded folk made this a lot easier.

She was an early and active member of the Wednesday Spinners, demonstrating with this group at MOFGA’S Common Ground Fair for 23 years. An original vendor at the Blue Hill Farmer’s Market, she took over its management from its founder, Rodney Cookman.

She is survived by her husband, Paul; a son, Nathaniel; a son, Andrew and his wife, Donna; and several grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held at Horsepower Farm on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at 2 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, P.O. Box 2176, Augusta, ME 04338 or to Blue Hill Heritage Trust, Capital Fund, Water Street, Blue Hill, ME 04614.

Calvin Alton Dyer

TRENTON - Calvin Alton Dyer, 77, died unexpectedly at his home, July 29, 2000. He was born in Franklin, Oct. 24, 1922, the son of Calvin and Hazel (Hardison) Dyer.

He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army. Calvin was employed as a master mechanic with the City of Stamford, Conn., until 1976 when he and his wife, Jeri, purchased the Leonard’s Motel in Bar Harbor. After the sale of Leonard’s in 1985, Calvin was employed for the Town of Bar Harbor until his retirement in 1998.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Geraldine A. Dyer of Trenton; three sons, Richard T. Dyer of Trenton, William A. Dyer of Bar Harbor and Wayne D. Dyer and his wife, Patricia, of Biloxi, Miss.; his sister, Sylvia Nickerson of Franklin and his brother, Reginald Dyer of Eastbrook; his grandchildren, Carrie A. Dyer, Wayne D. Dyer Jr. and Trevor L. Dyer; several nieces and nephews.

A service of remembrance was held Aug. 1, 2000, at the Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. The family suggests that if friends desire, they may make contributions in Calvin’s memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011 or the Kidney Foundation of Maine, P.O. Box 1134, Portland, ME 04104.

Marian "Mammy" (Dexter) Patterson Makevich

HAMPDEN - Marian "Mammy" (Dexter) Patterson Makevich, 84, died Aug. 6, 2000, at a Bangor hospital. She was born in Hampden, Sept. 1, 1915, the daughter of Ronald E. and Ethel (Hammond) Dexter.

Marian had lived in Hampden for many years, where she brought up her children, later moving to Ellsworth, where she worked for many years as a cashier at the Ellsworth IGA and Collier’s Nursing Home in Ellsworth. Marian’s interests were always directed to her family, and after the death of her first husband, Fred Patterson, she dedicated her life to working hard at raising her four children. A devoted mother, she was proud of her family and felt blessed to have seen them grown. Her greatest legacy was one of selflessness and of love and devotion to her family.

She is survived by a son, Dennis R. Patterson and his wife, Deanna, of Hampden; a daughter, Joan C. Ryan and her husband, Bernard, of Ellsworth; a brother, Robert Dexter of Eddington; a sister, Ethel Thomas of Bangor; a son-in-law, Colby L. Evans I of Hampden; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband in 1950; her second husband, Samuel X. Makevich in 1979; and by a son, Charles H. Patterson in 1991; a daughter, Janis P. Evans in 1999; three brothers and four sisters.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at Locust Grove Cemetery, Hampden.
