Harriet Adams Gundersen

HANOVER, N.H. - Harriet Adams Gundersen, 97, of Kendal at Hanover, died Saturday, July 1, 2000. She was born in New Haven, Conn., on Jan. 5, 1903, the daughter of Yale professor John Chester Adams and Elizabeth Munger Adams.

She attended both public and private schools in New Haven and was graduated from Vassar College in 1923. Immediately after that, she spent two years as librarian in the children’s division of the New Haven Public Library, where she developed a lifelong interest in underprivileged children and their families in the city. She kept up with several of them all her life. She was then employed by the Yale Institute of Human Relations, where she participated in the first unemployment survey in the United States, at the start of the Depression. Later she worked in the New Haven office of the Connecticut State Labor Department.

In 1934 she was married to the late Dr. Sven Gundersen, a prominent physician at the Hitchcock Clinic, and lived in Boston for two years. While there, she was a volunteer in Dr. John Rock’s Planned Parenthood Clinic. On moving to Hanover, she became active in the community as a board member of the League of Women Voters and of the newly formed Upper Valley Training Center. Mrs. Gundersen made a valiant attempt to form a chamber music society before Dartmouth College had any interest in it. She organized two fine concerts a year for two years and, as she said, "that was the short life."

During World War II and later, after the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, she and Dr. Gundersen sponsored many European refugees—"displaced persons"—and occasionally took them into their home while they learned English and found positions in schools and colleges.

All her life, she spent as much time as possible at a family place, Hancock Point, on the Maine coast. She loved her home there and her lifelong friends in the community. She was an enthusiastic sailor. At one time, she spent the fall and winter months with the Maine Sea Coast Mission serving the Downeast islands and lighthouse families. The Gundersens moved to Kendal at Hanover at its opening in 1991.
