Kenneth Wilbur Blaisdell

ELLSWORTH - Kenneth Wilbur Blaisdell, 80, died May 30, 2000, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bangor, Nov. 24, 1919, the son of Harvard W. Blaisdell and Marian (Page) Blaisdell.

Kenneth grew up in Orono and Ellsworth, attending grade schools in both locations. He was a graduate of Ellsworth High School, Class of 1937; University of Maine, Class of 1941; Boston University School of Law, Class of 1948. He served his country during World War II as a lieutenant in the United States Navy. Kenneth joined his father and grandfather in the law firm of Blaisdell & Blaisdell in 1948 and has continued the practice to the present time. He received his 50-year membership with the Maine Bar Association in March 1999.

Kenneth attended the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth. He was a member of Lygonia Lodge No. 40 AF & AM, Acadia Chapter No. 31 RAM, Blanquefort Commandery No. 13 KT, University of Maine Alumni Association, Ellsworth High School Alumni Association, Hancock County Bar Association, Maine Bar Association, American Trial Lawyers Association, Maine Trial Lawyers Association, Phi Kappa Sigma, University of Maine, and the Luncheon Club. He was a charter member of the Jaycees.

Kenneth served on the Ellsworth School Board, Board of Directors of Meadowview, Board of Trustees of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and as county attorney for four years.Kenneth is survived by his wife, Joyce V.S. Blaisdell of Ellsworth; daughters, Kristin G. Blaisdell of Hancock and Karen J. Blaisdell and John Van Pelt of Ellsworth; grandsons, Ethan B. Hunt and Zachary B. Hunt of Ellsworth; sisters, Ruth B. Silsby and her husband, Herbert T. Silsby II, and Glenice B. Carpenter and her husband, Donald E. Carpenter, both of Ellsworth; William B. Blaisdell IV of Ellsworth; Mrs. Carl E. Blaisdell of Bangor, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 2, at the First Congregational Church, Ellsworth, with the Rev. James Wood officiating. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. Nora Therese Allen

MISSOURI and ELLSWORTH - Nora Therese Allen, 30, died May 29, 2000, in Missouri. She was born July 4, 1969, in Oregon, the daughter of Jacobus and Karin (Hilpert) DeGroot.

Nora was an engineering graduate of the University of Oklahoma. A fierce competitor with a gift for spotting beauty, especially hidden beauty, she possessed a strength that shown most brightly in her last four months. She loved reading and movies, flowers, gaming and gathering with friends, traveling and, most of all, family.

Nora is survived by her beloved mother and best friend, Karin (Lemus) of Oklahoma City, Okla.; her father, Jacobus DeGroot of Klamath Falls, Ore.; her sister, Diane Genther of Oklahoma City; her husband, Greg of St. Charles, Mo., and Ellsworth, with whom she shares their mingled souls. She was most of all looking forward to raising and enjoying their first child, Christopher Geoffrey Allen, who is adored by all who know him. She is also survived by her stepfather, Jesse Lemus; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Beverly Allen of Ellsworth; and more loving friends than can be listed here.

A funeral service was held June 6, 2000, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. James Wood officiating. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sedgwick. The family requests that in memory of Nora, please sign your organ donor cards. Alice May Burns

ELLSWORTH and SWAN’S ISLAND - Alice May Burns, 72, died June 8, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born April 25, 1928, at Swan’s Island, the daughter of Chester and Bessie (Herrick) Joyce. She was a longtime resident of Swan’s Island

She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Russell E. Burns of Ellsworth and Swan’s Island; one son, Russell E. Burns Jr., and his fiancee, Kathleen of Atlantic; one daughter, Joyce E. Knight and her husband, Walter of Ellsworth; two sisters, Gladys Joyce and Marguerite Staples, both of Atlantic; two grandchildren, Molly Orcutt-Steele and Jarred Burns; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Steele and Rebecca Steele; special friends, Danny and Ramona Backman and their five children and Billy French, who was like a grandson to her. She was predeceased by two brothers, Roy Joyce and Keith Joyce and a grandchild, Gabrial Orcutt.

A service was held June 12, 2000, at the Atlantic Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Joy officiating. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Atlantic. Friends who wish may make gifts in Alice’s memory to the Swan’s Island Church of God. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert, ME.

Bruce P. Flagg

DEER ISLE - Bruce P. Flagg, 50, died June 19, 2000, at a local health-care facility. He was born April 20, 1950, in Sedgwick, the son of Vance and Eliza (Moody) Flagg.

He is survived by two sisters, Hope Young and Jenny Joyce, both of Stonington; two uncles, Michael Hardy of Stonington, Morton Higgins and an aunt, Lillian Higgins, both of Ellsworth.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Mt. Rest Cemetery, North Brooksville. Arrangements by Healey Funeral Home, South Street, Blue Hill.

Dorothy F. McCabe

ELLSWORTH and WOODBRIDGE TOWNSHIP, N.J. - Dorothy F. McCabe, 84, died June 20, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born June 5, 1916, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of John T. and Dorothy F. (Van Cott) Omenhiser.

Dorothy taught school for 35½ years at Woodbridge Township, N.J. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Woodbridge Township, where she was an elder for five years. She was also a member of White Church Guild and Woodbridge Township Retired Educators Association. She moved to Maine in 1987, where she was active in the First Congregational Church and the church’s "Busy Bodies" as well as the Ellsworth Garden Club and Ellsworth Health Link. She loved flowers, animals and people.

Dorothy is survived by three daughters, Bonnie McCabe of Minneapolis, Minn., Susan King and Linda Brooks and her husband, Chuck, both of Ellsworth; one brother, Ret. Col. John T. Omenhiser and his wife, Ruth, of Florida; two grandchildren, Jenny King and Kristen King; and her three cats, Freddy, Barney and Daisy. She leaves special friends, Steve and Martha Beathem, Helen Povich and Louise Hadley. She was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, J. Ira McCabe, in 1975.

A memorial service was held June 25, 2000, at the First Congregational Church, Ellsworth, with the Rev. James Wood officiating, Interment will be held at a later date in New Jersey. Barbara Hodgkins Kudlich

SCARBOROUGH and LAMOINE - On June 3, 2000, at 11 a.m., a commemorative service will be held for Barbara Hodgkins Kudlich, who died in Portland on March 8, 2000. She was born and raised in Lamoine, the daughter of Thaddeus and Gladys Hodgkins. The service will be held in the Marlborough Cemetery, off the Seal Point Road in Lamoine. The Rev. David Henry will preside. A celebration of life will be held after the service at the Kudlich cottage, 77 Thaddeus Lane, Lamoine. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Donald P. Colewell

COREA - Donald P. Colewell, 80, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at his home in Corea. He was born in Corea, June 24, 1919, the son of Roy and Vivian (Young) Colewell.

Donald is survived by his only daughter, Linda Hooper of Sullivan; a sister, Natalie Dunbar and her husband, Ray, of Corea; two brothers, Byron Colewell and his wife, Josie, of Milbridge, Larry Colewell and his wife, Betty, of Florida; two grandchildren, Michelle Hooper of Sullivan and Jamie Hooper of Rockland; a great-grandson, Devin Hooper. He was predeceased by his wife, Myrtle; a sister, Thelma Duffy; and a brother, Gilbert Colewell.

Chester Ronald Johnson

COREA - A memorial service for Chester Ronald Johnson, 75, who died March 30, 2000, will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Corea Baptist Church. You are invited to visit at his home after the service, but please bring chairs.

Frances Carlisle Grant

ELLSWORTH - Frances Carlisle Grant, 74, passed away June 20, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born Feb. 10, 1926, in Ellsworth, the daughter of Lelya and Ruthvin Carlisle Jr.

Frances ran a chicken farm for many years while her children were growing up, she later developed a trucking business and since 1970, has been the manager of the Ellsworth Shopping Center and the Sterling Net Co. in Ellsworth.

She is survived by her loving companion, Forrest L. Moore Jr.; her children, Myron Grant and his wife, Linda, Ross Grant and his wife, Anne, Alice McGlothlin and her husband, Gary, Robert Grant and his wife, Dianne; grandchildren surviving are Clarence E. "Buzzy" Grant, Forrest "Buddy" Grant, Roger Grant and Robert C. Grant Jr.; great-grandchildren, Michael, Steven, Hailey and Fallon Grant. Frances is also survived by her dear sister, Reta Fox and her husband, John; and their children, Carol Sheehan and her husband, Joe, and John Fox III and his wife, Connie; Frances also leaves her good friend and co-worker, Alice Hanscom.

Pastor Robert Maddocks will conduct graveside services at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. Ethel M. Haskell

MOUNT DESERT - Ethel M. Haskell, 82, died peacefully at the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth, May 24, 2000. Ethel was born March 7, 1918, in Portland, the daughter of John D. and Celeta Leavitt (Innis) of Raymond.

She graduated from Deering High School and Gray’s Business College. She was employed by the Canal National Bank of Portland, where she met and later married Stanley B. Haskell on Feb. 5, 1941. Ethel was active as a lay leader in the Cumberland Center Congregational Church and the Maine Congregational Church Conference, working primarily with youth. She was the first woman dean at Pilgrim Lodge, the conference summer church camp in West Gardiner. The family moved to Bangor in 1959 when Stanley began studies at Bangor Theological Seminary, and Ethel was hired as the religious education director at Hammond Street Congregational Church. Ethel’s dedication to and work with youth remained a key vocation. Her home was always open to young people of all ages. She also spent several years as a volunteer during the early days of the H.O.M.E. Cooperative in Orland. She served on the Governor’s Committee for Youth Advocacy under James B. Longley. Ethel and her husband were among the founders of the Homestead Project, a residential program for troubled youth on the shores of Graham Lake, Ellsworth Falls. Ethel lived the last 32 years of her life on her beloved Mount Desert Island. She remained active in the Northeast Harbor Union Congregational Church, UCC, until the ravages of arthritis kept her at home.

She is survived by her two sisters, Corinne Mann of Kittery Point and Jean Jordan of Westbrook; her three children, Elizabeth Haskell of Corpus Christi, Texas, Benjamin Haskell and wife, Betty Anne, of Brewer, and John Haskell and wife, Joyce Mallery, of Hampden; seven granddaughters, two great-granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 4, 2000, 3 p.m. at the Northeast Harbor Union Congregational Church, with the Rev. Mac Bigelow officiating. For those who wish, contributions may be made in her name to the Maine Seacoast Missionary Society, 127 West St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

E. Brice McEldowney

ELLSWORTH - E. Brice McEldowney, 79, died June 13, 2000, at an Ellsworth health-care facility. He was born April 5, 1921, in Akron, Ohio, the son of John and Lottie (Sutton) McEldowney.

Brice was dedicated to his work as a Director of the YMCA for 32 years. His favorite projects with the YMCA included the model Legislature and the summer day camp. He was a member of the Ellsworth Rotary Club where he received the Paul Harris Fellowship. He was a Deacon of the United Baptist church as well as a Sunday School teacher. After his retirement, he was on the board of directors of Child Development Services and was active with the Adult AFS. He enjoyed golf and was a sports enthusiast. He was a veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Sylvia (Kingsford) McEldowney; two sons, Paul McEldowney and his wife, Terri, and Peter McEldowney, all of Ellsworth; two daughters, Susan Noble and her husband, Robert of Mansfield, Ohio, and Anne Strock and her husband, Martin of Middletown, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Christopher and Erin McEldowney, Sonia and Amanda Noble, Bethany and Sharon Strock.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2000, at the United Baptist Church, Hancock Street, Ellsworth, with the Rev. John L. Dunn Jr. officiating. If friends desire, they may make donations in Brice’s memory to the YMCA, Box 25, Ellsworth, 04605 or to the United Baptist Church, 38 Pine St., Ellsworth. Arrangements are by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

Frederick "Petie" F. Solari Jr

NORTHEAST HARBOR - Frederick "Petie" F. Solari Jr., 68, died June 23, 2000, at a Mount Desert Island hospital. He was born April 24, 1932, in Bar Harbor, the son of Frederick Francis Sr. and Helen (Dodge) Solari.

He was the owner and operator of Frederick Solari Paint Shop for many years. Petie was a founding member of the Police Reserve in Mount Desert. He served the Northeast Harbor Ambulance Co. as a board member for many years. He was a member of the Northeast Harbor Fire Co. for many years and was named an honorary fireman.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Patricia (Bowler) Solari of Northeast Harbor; a loving daughter, Helen Solari King of Northeast Harbor; a sister, Helena Eaton of Northeast Harbor; loving grandchildren, Chessie Lancaster of Old Town, Frederick King of Northeast Harbor; aunt, Totie Young of Florida; a very special friend, Mary Grindle of Seal Harbor; four nieces and nephews; an extra special friend, O.P. Jackson of Northeast Harbor and Kennebunkport, who was always there for Petie and never let him down. He will be missed by his friends and coffee pals at Cozy Cove Restaurant and Gott’s Store. He was predeceased by a brother, Gary Solari; a good friend, Albert Farley; and an uncle, Kenneth Young.

A service of remembrance was held June 28, 2000, at Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert, with the Rev. Joseph Daniels presiding. At Petie’s request, gifts in his memory may be made to the Northeast Harbor Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 122, Northeast Harbor 04662.

Zelma Mae McKay

ELLSWORTH - Zelma Mae McKay, 89, died May 24, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born in Birch Harbor, Aug. 26, 1910, the daughter of Robert and Minnie (Rice) McKay.

She graduated from Bar Harbor High School. For many years, she worked for Morang Robinson Auto Co. of Ellsworth and Bar Harbor and also for The Ellsworth American.

She is survived by several cousins.

At Zelma’s request, there will be no funeral services. Arrangements are in care of Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

Alfreda Beale Tracy

SOUTH GOULDSBORO - Alfreda Beale Tracy, 72, died at a Bangor hospital June 4, 2000, surrounded by her family. She was born at Franklin, Nov. 12, 1927, the daughter of Alfred and Belva (Scammon) Beale.

She graduated from the Winter Harbor High School in 1944 and attended Farmington State Teachers College until 1946. Alfreda began her teaching career in 1947 at the South Gouldsboro School until her husband’s Naval service caused them to move to Norfolk, Va. When they returned home in 1953, she continued her teaching at the Winter Harbor Grammar School as the kindergarten and first grade teacher until 1962. In 1968 she went to work at the family business, The Winter Harbor Agency, with her husband, Earle. She retired in June of 1989 to enjoy RVing with her husband.

She was an active member and past worthy matron of the Ruby Chapter No. 31 OES of Winter Harbor, the Acadian Community Woman’s Club and the Theta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma. Alfreda was a dedicated volunteer at the Winter Harbor Public Library. She was a charter member of the Eleanor Widener Dixon Memorial Clinic Committee. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening at her home.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Earle B. Tracy Jr. of South Gouldsboro; two sons, Paul and his wife, Melissa, of Gouldsboro and Robert and his wife, Ellen, of Southwest Harbor; a former daughter-in-law, who was a special friend, Donna of Ellsworth; one granddaughter, Jennifer; three grandsons, Andrew, Jordan and Samuel B.; one great-grandchild and several cousins.

A funeral service was held June 7, 2000, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Milbridge, with the Rev. William Renwick officiating. Interment was at Bunker Memorial Cemetery, South Gouldsboro. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eleanor Widener Dixon Memorial Clinic, HC 35, Box 52, Gouldsboro 04607.

Harriet Kelley Ewing

CONCORD, MASS. And SORRENTO - Harriet Kelley Ewing, 83 years, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at Walden Rehabilitation Center, Concord, Mass. She was the wife of the late Bayard Ewing to whom she was married for 52 years. Bayard was born in Sorrento in 1916. Bayard and Harriet spent their summers in Sorrento. Harriet was born in Providence in 1916. Harriet was educated at Gordon, Lincoln and Westover schools, Sarah Lawrence College and the Rhode Island School of Design.

Harriet was an artist, a devoted outdoorsman and an avid birdwatcher. This was in addition to being a wife, mother and grandmother. Her strong belief in volunteerism led her to donate her time over the years to the Red Cross, Planned Parenthood of Rhode Island, the Museum Associates of the Rhode Island School of Design and the tutoring program in the Providence public schools. She was an active supporter of the Providence Atheneum, the Providence Art Club, RISD Museum, Rhode Island Audubon and the Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island and Maine.

Harriet is survived by five children, Linda E. Hamlin of Denver, Colo,; Gill E. Ehrich of Cape Elizabeth, Bayard C. Ewing of Brattleboro, Vt., Gifford P. Ewing of Denver, Colo., and Harriet K. Ewing of Concord, Mass. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Sorrento on Aug. 5.

Ronald O. Pinkham

ELLSWORTH and OCALA, FLA. - Ronald O. Pinkham, 64, died June 22, 2000, at a Bangor hospital. He was born June 5, 1936, in Seal Harbor, the son of Alton E. and Nina (Orcutt) Pinkham.

Ronald was retired from the U.S. Army, from which he had received the National Defense Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, a silver and bronze star and many other honors received during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Lygonia Masonic Lodge of Ellsworth.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Mary Ellen Pinkham; two daughters, Patricia Russell and husband, Glenn, of Trenton and Catherine Berry and husband, Jonathan, of Nashua, N.H.; three sisters, Althea Gray of Otter Creek, Isabelle Noddin of Hancock and Prudy Grindle of Orland; four grandchildren, Jonathan Berry Jr., Monica Berry, Bradley Russell and Rachel Russell. He was predeceased by a son, Ronald O. Pinkham Jr.

A funeral service was held June 24, 2000, at the Fernald Funeral Chapel, Main Street, Mount Desert. Interment was at Seal Harbor Cemetery. Those who desire may make contributions in Ronald’s memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

John Rumsey Davies III

SARGENTVILLE - John Rumsey Davies III, 82, died at his home in Sargentville, May 6, 2000. He was born Sept. 22, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was the son of Dr. John R. Davies Jr. and Mary Tracy Davies.

He graduated from Chestnut Hill Academy and the University of Pennsylvania. He was a mechanical engineer and was vice-president of The Mills Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. He moved to Maine in 1969. He was a member of the Blue Hill Congregational Church and enjoyed woodworking, boating and gardening.

He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Allison Mills Davies, and a brother, Fredrick. He is survived by four children, Nancy Allison Davies Talbot of Chester, N.J., Mary Tracy Davies of Yarmouth, John Rumsey Davies of Sedgwick, Peter Osborne Davies of Pittsford, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on June 3, 2000, 2 p.m. at the Sargentville Chapel, with the Rev. Rob McCall presiding. A reception at John’s home will follow the service. Private family Interment will be held at the Lakeview Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio. June E. Forsythe

ELLSWORTH - June E. Forsythe, 81, died May 31, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born Aug. 2, 1918, in Ellsworth, the daughter of Herbert D. and Elizabeth H. (Beal) Forsythe.

June graduated from the Ellsworth school system and worked for New England Telephone Co. for 40 years. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, and a member of the Church of Life and Praise in Ellsworth Falls.

June is survived by one brother, Herbert Forsythe and his wife, Lee, of Verona Island; a sister-in-law, Judy Forsythe of Highland Springs, Va.; three nieces, Bonnie Ellis and her husband, Dwayne, of Benton, Brenda Bowden and her husband, David, of Bucksport, and Jane Veinot of Ellsworth; three nephews, Greg Forsythe and his wife, Johanna, of Conyers, Ga., Cabot Forsythe and his wife, July, of Mechanicsville, Va., and Allen Forsythe of Ellsworth. She was predeceased by a brother, Jack Forsythe.

A graveside service was held June 5, 2000, at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth, with the Rev. James Heard officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in June’s memory may be made to the Church of Life and Praise Building Fund, 321 State St., Ellsworth 04605.
