Charlotte E. Blevins

WINTER HARBOR and BAR HARBOR - Charlotte E. Blevins, 83, died March 3, 2000, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. She was born Feb. 28, 1917, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of William and Lillian (Smith) Cody.

In her earlier years, she attended Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Bar Harbor and in her travels on various military bases attended various chapels. Charlotte loved to knit and crochet and then give away her handcrafts to anyone in need. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, wonderful sister, and very proud grandmother.

Charlotte is survived by her beloved husband of 49 years, Junior "Snuffy" M. Blevins of Winter Harbor; two sons, Robert "Goose" Blevins of Tremont and John Paul Blevins of Los Angeles; a granddaughter, Holly Blevins of Marlette, Mich.; two brothers, Wellington "Willy" Cody of Bar Harbor and John Cody of Coconut Creek, Fla.; a sister, Laura Corson of Bar Harbor; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four sisters, Isabella McBurney, Katherine Leathers, Mary Day, and Margaret Paynter.

Friends are invited to meet with the family for a time of sharing 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Jordan-Fernald, Bar Harbor Chapel, 48 Eden St., Bar Harbor. A graveside funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 10, 2000, at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Bar Harbor, with the Rev. James Gower presiding. Alonzo R. Eaton

CASTINE - Alonzo R. Eaton, 87, of Castine, passed away March 3, 2000, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Eaton was born on Little Deer Isle, May 17, 1913, the son of Mace R. and Ada (Small) Eaton.

At an early age he moved with his family to Castine where he resided, married and raised his family. Mr. Eaton was a master boat builder. He worked most of his working years with his father, either working at or owning the family business, Eaton Boatyard in Castine.

Although Mr. Eaton was not a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, he spent five years serving his country during World War II as general foreman of a 500-acre potato farm in Connecticut. Mr. Eaton acted as foreman, shipping manager and construction manager. The potato farm was held in control of the U.S. Army for sole production, storage and shipment to the armed forces overseas. He also spent several years as a carpenter with the CCC working on the Passamaquoddy Project in Eastport.

After the war, he returned to Castine and spent the rest of his working career as a master boat builder. He either worked on or was involved in total construction of around 70 boats, ranging from 10-foot rowboats to 60-foot schooners. He was credited, along with his father, as builder of 22 Castine Class day sailers, all of which are still used in and around Castine. In 1997 he was inducted into the Maine Boat Builders Hall of Fame. He was noted in the "Cruising Guide to the New England Coast" as a leading authority of Penobscot Bay.

He married Helen Calder Eaton in 1939. They were married 58 years at the time of her passing in March 1997.

He is survived by two sons, Lawrence Eaton of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Kenneth Eaton and his wife, Kathleen, of Castine; four grandchildren, Ruth Eaton of Castine, Suzanne Eaton of Castine, his namesake, Alonzo R. "Rod" Eaton of Providence, R.I., Jennifer Woods of Davis, Fla., three other grandchildren, also of Davie, Fla.; two sisters, Christine Collor of Castine, Mary Robshaw of Orland; one half-sister, Bessie Bates of Springfield, Mass.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a very special friend, Robert Cutthill of Castine and New York. He was predeceased by two sisters, one brother and one half-sister.

There will not be visitation per the wishes of the family. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced. The family wishes that there not be any flowers. Those who wish may make a donation in memory of Mr. Eaton to the Maine Maritime Academy to be directly used by the Yacht Operations/Boatyard Management Program, c/o Randy Erb, Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, or to the charity of their choice. Anna Flagg Johnston Wellington

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Anna Flagg Johnston Wellington died peacefully at her Southwest Harbor home on Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, following a long battle against emphysema. She was born on Nov. 21, 1918, in Bangor to Charles Alcott Flagg and Ethel Flinder Flagg.

She attended Bangor public schools, the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and Westbrook College. Anna was well-known for her quick wit and good humor in the face of adversity. This attitude carried over to the golf course and tennis courts at Causeway Club where she was a longtime member. Always the competitor, she was the first to laugh at her own mistakes while supporting others in theirs.

Anna is survived by her husband, John C. Wellington of Southwest Harbor; two sons, John Flagg Johnston of Bangor and Charles William Johnston of Southwest Harbor; and her identical twin sister, Caroline Mebane of Cary, N.C.; a stepson, John A. Wellington and a stepdaughter, Leslie A. Wellington, both of Manset. In addition there are six grandchildren, John and James Johnston of Bangor, Erin and Louis "Buddy" Charlett of Manset, Jay Wellington of Ellsworth and Julie Valaitis of Barkhamstead, Conn., and three great-grandchildren. Anna was predeceased by her first husband, William V. Johnston; a daughter, Dorothy Johnston; a sister, Harriet Field; and a brother, John Flagg, who was lost at sea.

In lieu of flowers, friends may give to the Dorothy Johnston Fund at the Southwest Harbor Public Library, P.O. Box 156, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679 or to the SPCA Shelter in Southwest Harbor, P.O. Box 434, where she served on the board for many years. A memorial service will be announced at a later date, probably in late July.

Iris W. Hayes

BAR HARBOR

Iris W. Hayes, 83, died March 1, 2000, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 20, 1916, in Otter Creek, the daughter of Frank and Neva Warren.

In her earlier years she worked at Fred C. Lynam Insurance Co. and then worked for many years at the CN Marine terminal. Iris was a lifetime member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Bar Harbor. She also volunteered for many years at the Maine Seacoast Mission. Iris loved to read and to take care of her plants around the house.

She is survived by a special grandson, Thomas Hayes Brown of Mount Desert, whom she raised, and another grandson, James Russell Brown Jr. of New York City, N.Y.; brothers, Harold "Sonny" and Harriet Warren of Vinalhaven, Philip and Carol Warren of Bucksport, Ora "Bud" and Lillian Warren of Vinalhaven; sisters, Arlene McAllen and Francis of Portland, Louise Fitzgerald and Larry of Portland, Onalee "Bonnie" Hopkins of Bass Harbor; brother-in-law, William Leach of Orland; sister-in-law, Alice Warren of Vinalhaven; special friends, Grace and Lee Hubbard and their family of Bar Harbor; and several nieces and nephews. Iris was also predeceased by two daughters, Elizabeth Hayes in 1949 and Beatrice Brown in 1982; her husband, Harold F. Hayes in 1981; two brothers, Frank and William Warren; and a sister, Joanne Leach.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated March 6, 2000, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Mt. Desert Street, Bar Harbor, with the Rev. Joseph Daniels presiding. Interment will be in the spring at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Bar Harbor. Contributions may be made in Iris's memory to the Maine Seacoast Mission, 127 West St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, Bar Harbor Chapel, 48 Eden St., Bar Harbor.

Blaine L. Crabtree

NEW BRITAIN, CONN. - Blaine L. Crabtree, 63, of New Britain, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at New Britain General Hospital. born in Franklin, he was employed at Holo-Chrome for many years. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and the Men’s Club of the church.

Mr. Crabtree is survived by his wife, Vivian (Barrows) Crabtree; two sons, Wayne and his wife, Karen Crabtree, and Michael and his wife, Rebecca Crabtree, all of Cherryfield; a daughter, Kathi and her husband, Daniel Samko, of Newington, Conn.; two stepsons, James and Paula Kron of New Britain and Thomas and Laura Kron of Newington; two stepdaughters, Sharon Kron of Newington, and Charlotte and her husband, Tyke Robertson, of Florida; seven grandchildren; a brother, Robert Crabtree of Steuben; three sisters, Ruth Pung and Amelia Salsbury, both of Franklin, and Barbi and her husband, Gene MacQuarrie, of Holden; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held March 24, 2000, from the Farrell Funeral Home, 110 Franklin Sq., with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Church. Entombment followed in St. Mary cemetery Garden Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church, 655 East St., New Britain, CT 06051.

Elaine M. Davis

PORTLAND - Elaine M. Davis passed on peacefully at her home in Portland on March 25, 2000, after a long and courageous struggle with her disease. She was in an at-home hospice program and was attended to primarily by her husband, Michael Reynolds, and her daughter, Brenda Edgerly.

Elaine was born July 28, 1941, in Blue Hill, where she graduated in 1960 from George Stevens Academy. She also graduated from Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in 1974 from the nursing program. She worked for many years as an LPN in Blue Hill, Ellsworth and Bangor. She had a love and passion for helping people that showed in the quality of her work and in everything else she did. Elaine enjoyed reading, learning new things, lobster feeds and lima beans, camping, Women with Wings, gardening and many other activities including a day at the beach. She especially loved her pets, Kojo, Tigger and Alvin. Elaine truly demonstrated that a person could choose to live life to the fullest.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Michael Reynolds; her daughter, Brenda Edgerly and her fiance, Eugene Webber, of Surry; her stepson, Kris Reynolds of Bangor; and two grandchildren, Chaneile Edgerly and Scott Edgerly, both of Surry; special friends, Sandy Imondi, Susan McDonald, Susanne Noessel and Rick Deblois.

A memorial service celebrating Elaine’s life and memories was held March 29, 2000, at the Unity Church in Windham. Another service will be held 7 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2000, at the United Baptist Church, corner of Pine and Hancock streets, Ellsworth. Friends and family are asked to bring a small token, i.e. stone, shell or other symbol representing a connection to Elaine’s life.

Amber Nicole Merrill

SULLIVAN and STETSON - Amber Nicole Merrill, 10, died March 26, 2000, at her Sullivan residence following a long illness. She was born in Bangor, Oct. 23, 1989, the daughter of Richard and Jeanette (Burge) Merrill.

She attended elementary schools in New Hampton, N.H., and the Mountain View School in Sullivan. She enjoyed winter sports especially ice skating, ice fishing, and snowmobiling. She also loved to read.

She is survived by her parents, Richard and Jeanette Merrill of Sullivan; her brother, Corey A. Merrill of Sullivan; maternal grandmother, Leola Burge of Gouldsboro; paternal grandparents, Ralph and Carolyn Merrill Jr. of Stetson; maternal great-grandfather, Douglas Young Sr. of Gouldsboro; paternal great-grandparents, Ralph and Ellen Merrill Sr. of Stetson; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A funeral service was held March 29, 2000, at the Brown Funeral Home, Newport, with the Rev. Linda Kimberlain officiating. The family would like to recognize with a special thanks to the Community Health and Counseling nurses, especially Beth Bland, Doctors Horvath and Judy McGann, and their many friends that stood by them. Friends who wish may make memorial donations to either the Ronald McDonald House or the Make a Wish Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the Brown Funeral Home.

Helen E. Briggs

SORRENTO - Helen E. Briggs, 73, died March 25, 2000, at her home. She was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Sullivan, the daughter of George A. and Mary (MacNaughton) Estabrook.

Helen was a very unselfish person, a faithful wife, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed by her family. She loved music and was a very talented piano player. She had a beautiful voice and sang with many different groups through the years. Helen was modest, however her talents as an artist were enjoyed by everyone who saw her work. She also enjoyed gardening and always took pride in her flowers. Helen was assistant treasurer of the Sorrento VIS for 38 years. Her books always proved out to the penny and were kept meticulously.

Helen is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Prescott Briggs; two sons, Prescott Briggs III of Sorrento and Chris Briggs of Lamoine; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sally and Elliott Daley of North Sullivan and Cindy and Richard Burnett of East Sullivan; a brother, Walter Estabrook and wife, Dot, of Sorrento and one sister, Dorothy Sproul and husband, Otis, of Durham, N.H.; four grandchildren, Michelle Dewitt, April Breiner, Alison and Amy Stevens; three great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Riley Dewitt and Nicholas Breiner; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Edna Briggs.

A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in the spring. The family suggests that those who desire may make contributions in Helen’s memory to the Mary Dow Center for Cancer Care, MCMH, 50 Union St., Ellsworth, ME 04605. Dr. Wilmarth H. "Bill" Starr

PALM COAST, FLA. - Dr. Wilmarth H. "Bill" Starr, 86, a former resident of Orono, with homes in Oak Point, Trenton, and Palm Coast, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, from cancer at his home in Florida.

Dr. Starr retired from the faculty at New York University, where from 1960-1976 he was the all-university head of the Romance and Slavic Language Department. From 1970-1975, Dr. Starr was the director of New York University in Paris, France, and Madrid, Spain. Dr. Starr was also on the faculty at the University of Maine in Orono and head of its Modern Language Department from 1937-1960. From 1959-1965, Dr. Starr was the director of the Modern Language Association’s Foreign Language Testing Program. He was inducted into the Ordre des Palmes Academique by the French Ministry of Education in 1970.

Dr. Starr was born in Charleston, W.Va., in 1913. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., in 1934 and received his doctorate of philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., in 1937. He served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946 and from 1952-1953, he was the chief education officer for the Mutual Security Agency in Southeast Asia. He was also active in the United States Power Squadrons.

Predeceased by his first wife, Eva Jones Starr, Dr. Starr is survived by his wife, Eleanor; two daughters, Judith McLaughlin of Vienna, Va., and Gail Starr of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sons, Judson Wilmarth Starr of Chevy Chase, Md., Christopher Holt Starr of Old Greenwich, Conn., and Charles Holt Starr of Ellicott City, Md.; four stepchildren, Wayne McFarland of Sterling, Mass., Leslie Mansfield of Brewer, Scott McFarland of Somesville and Susan Robidoux of Ellsworth; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Alfred W. Perkins

BROOKSVILLE - Alfred W. Perkins, 89, died Feb. 5, 2000, at his home in Brooksville. He was born May 16, 1910, in Portland, Ore., the son of Edward W. and Chrissie M. (Gott) Perkins.

Alfred was a graduate of the University of Maine, Class of 1930, where he pitched for the varsity baseball team as well as his home team in Brooksville. As insurance commissioner for the State of Maine under Governors Hildreth and Sewall, Alfred established the Maine State Retirement System. He was a veteran of World War II having served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during the campaign in the Pacific. The majority of his career as an actuary was spent as the executive vice president of Union Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Portland. Alfred served for two terms as state representative under Governor Longley. He was a member of the Ira Berry Masonic Lodge No. 128.

During his 17 years as owner of Seal Bay Camp for girls, Alfred could be seen driving riders and their horses to horse shows throughout the state of Maine, often returning late at night with their championship ribbons.

Alfred is survived by Monty, his wife of 68 years; a son, Robert E. Perkins; a daughter, Dr. Ann P. Ellis; grandchildren, Ann R. Perkins, Margaret P. Osborn and Christine A. McLaughlin; and great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Aaron Osborn.

A funeral service was held Feb. 8, 2000, at the Blue Hill Congregational Church, Blue Hill, with the Rev. Robert McCall officiating. Interment will be in the spring at Mt. Rest Cemetery, Brooksville. Mary Diane Carroll

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Mary Diane Carroll, 59, died Feb. 15, 2000, at Mount Desert Island Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mary first came to Southwest Harbor in the summer of 1961, where she first met her beloved husband, the late David A. Carroll. She worked at the Live Yankee for 16 years and for the past seven years she worked as a landscaper at Deer Meadow.

She is survived by two sons, Charles Carroll and Nathan Carroll, both of Southwest Harbor; two daughters, Tracy L. Carroll of New York City and Heather Watras and husband, Karl, of Seal Cove; two brothers, Timothy Devine of Canton, Mass., and Steven Devine of LaCrosse, Wis.; three sisters, Catherine Devine of Atkinson, N.H., Janice Devine of Ellsworth and Patricia Nichols of Bar Harbor; three grandchildren, Courtney Mae Carroll of Southwest Harbor, Maya Melissa Watras and Emma Elizabeth Watras, both of Seal Cove. Mary was predeceased by her brother, William Devine.

A celebration of life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, in Southwest Harbor, with a reception to follow. Location pending, please call Heather at 244-4437. Robin J. Crabtree

BANGOR - Robin J. Crabtree, 48, best friend and beloved wife of Scott D. Haskell, died Feb. 21, 2000, at Eastern Maine Medical Center. She was born Aug. 30, 1951, in Portland, the daughter of Capt. Alan B. Crabtree and Shirley Sargent Crabtree, of Hancock and Ellsworth.

Robin had an indomitable spirit and lived each day to its fullest, always exploring new challenges. She was a special person who surrounded herself with family and friends. Robin kept in continual contact with hundreds. She loved to plan and work in her beautiful perennial gardens. She leaves behind hundreds of friends from stitchers, book lovers and gardeners to everyone else who entered her life. Robin was very proud of her Hancock roots.

She is survived by her husband of 16 years, Scott D. Haskell of Bangor. They were married in a barefoot ceremony in Honolulu on the first day of spring, 1983. She is also survived by a brother, Jeffrey P. Crabtree, his wife, Ann M. Bouslog, their children, nephew, Jesse, and niece, Kimiko Crabtree, all of Honolulu, Hawaii; one aunt and numerous cousins; father-in-law and mother-in-law, E. Douglas and Mary Alice Haskell of Deer Isle; sister-in-law, Jane Haskell-Cowles and husband, Rick Cowles, and their children, Jason and Sarah Cowles of Belfast. She was predeceased by her mother, father and several uncles.

Robin owned and operated her own business, Crabtree Public Relations & Marketing, and had been the public relations director for Bangor Theological Seminary and Penquis CAP, a public relations associate for St. Joseph’s Hospital and also worked in consumer relations. She was accredited in public relations in July 1990 by the Public Relations Society of America. At the time she received her APR, she was one of eight in the state of Maine to have such accreditation. She attended Fryeburg Academy, Rochester Institute of Technology, and graduated summa cum laude from Mt. Vernon College.

Robin was a member of the Public Relations Society of America and the board of directors of the American Red Cross, Pine Tree Chapter, board member of the Kidney Foundation of Maine, member of the Maine Public Relations Council, Public Relations Committee of the Family Planning Association of Maine, board of directors of the Hancock Historical Society, the Social Planning Division, United Way of Penobscot Valley, board member of Evensong, and was a program and publicity chairman of the Tuesday Forum.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A celebration of Robin’s life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Grace L. Clark

LAMOINE - Grace L. Clark, 68, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born in Bar Harbor, May 6, 1931, the daughter of George and Mary (Sargent) Watson.

Grace was a homemaker at her home in Lamoine. She enjoyed playing bingo and taking interest in her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Donald A. Clark of Lamoine; five children, Donna Haskell and her husband, David, of Ellsworth, Betty Hicks and her husband, George, of Bangor, Diane Goodwin of Hancock, Donald E. Clark and his wife, Mona, of Lamoine, and Randy Scott Clark of South Carolina; 11 grandchildren, Justin Haskell and his fiancee, Christy Seekins, Shane Robertson, Wayne Robertson, Tasha Hinckley, Jason Hinckley, Barbara Ann McAlpine, Heather Clark and her fiance, Scott, Lisa Clark, Theresa Clark, Erica Clark and Jessica Clark; her mother-in-law, Sarah Morang of Ellsworth; a brother, George Watson of Bangor; a sister, Alice Spicer of San Antonio, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by special friends, Christy Clark and Richard and Nancy Bunker, all of Ellsworth, and her feline friend, Toby, and her canine friend, Keisha.

Llewellyn V. Joyce

SWAN’S ISLAND - Llewellyn V. Joyce, 82, died Feb. 5, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital, after a long, hard battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 23, 1917, on Swan’s Island, the son of the late G. Carlton and Bessie (McKay) Joyce.

Llewellyn served his country in the U.S. Army, during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a lifelong resident and lobsterman of Swan’s Island and will be deeply missed by the fishermen of Burntcoat Harbor and all who knew him. He was a member of the Swan’s Island Church of God, where he loved to sing.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeannie (Demurs) Joyce; one son, Spencer and his wife, Wendy; his daughter, Bernita Joyce, all of Swan’s Island; one brother, Robert Joyce and his wife, Roberta, of Swan’s Island; grandchildren, Justin Griffin of the U.S. Coast Guard, Southwest Harbor, Joshua Joyce and his wife, Sarah, of Swan’s Island, Jaime Leeman and husband, Skip, of Bailey Island, and Emmie Joyce of Swan’s Island; three nephews, Carlton and Matt Joyce and Joe Staples, all of Swan’s Island; three nieces, Sharon Butterfield of Memphis, Tenn., Bonnie Staples of Swan’s Island and Laverne Craig of Waterville; two stepdaughters, Susan D’Errico of Bangor and Roberta Robels of Jamaica Plain, Mass. He will also be remembered by a special friend, Bobby Treadwell. He was predeceased by his first wife, Laura, in 1977; his sister, Phyllis, in 1997; his brother-in-law, Carroll Staples, in 1970; and a nephew, Timothy Joyce, in 1954.

A funeral service was held Feb. 8, 2000, at the Swan’s Island Church of Our God, with the Rev. Paul Joy officiating. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Atlantic. The family suggests that if friends desire, they may make donations in Llewellyn’s memory to the Swan’s Island Ambulance Service, care of Debbie Staples, Swan’s Island 04685. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

Mrs. Warren (Winnie) Harriman

SOUTH PARIS - Mrs. Warren (Winnie) Harriman, age 81, of Norway, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at the Market Square Health Care Center in South Paris. She was born April 28, 1918, in Blue Hill, the daughter of the late Homer and Maimie Wood Clark.

Mrs. Harriman attended school in Blue Hill, graduating from George Stevens Academy in 1936. She studied piano at the New England Conservatory of Music in Schenectady, N.Y., for one year and the Northern Conservatory of Music in Bangor for one year. She was a 50-year member of the Oxford Chapter No. 168 of the Order of the Eastern Star and a past Matron of that order. Mrs. Harriman was a past secretary and former member of the Oxford Hills Women’s Club, and a member of the Second Congregational Church of Norway and a former deaconess. She was also a stockholder and active member of the Norway Country Club since 1950, having served on the executive board during that tenure.

Mrs. Harriman was predeceased by her husband, Warren. She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Robert Bean (Jill) of Norway, Mrs. John Williams (Wendy), also of Norway; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ellis Bean (Faye) of South Paris; three granddaughters, Mrs. Jay Bessette (Kimberly), Mrs. Ted Trebilcock (Margaret), and Stacey Gammon; one grandson, Jamison Bean; two great-grandsons, Tyler Scott Gammon and Morgan Wentworth Gammon, and one great-granddaughter, Ellen Harriman Bessette. Mrs. Harriman also had several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At Winnie’s request, there will be no funeral or visiting hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring. Donations in Mrs. Harriman’s memory may be sent to the Norway Historical Society, or to the Second Congregational Church, and the Norway Library. Arrangements under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway.

Raymond Earle Grindle

OKEECHOBEE, FLA. and ELLSWORTH - Raymond Earle Grindle, 70, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at a West Palm Beach, Fla., hospital due to complications following lung cancer. He was born Sept. 8, 1929, in Ellsworth, the son of Hollis and Myrtle (Deering) Grindle.

Raymond is survived by a son, Raymond Richard Grindle of Aurora; four daughters, Cheryle Dyer and her husband, Rusty, of Town Hill, Cathye Folsom of Okeechobee, Fla., Candyce Wilbur and her husband, Allen, of Eastbrook, and Celeste Cote of Bar Harbor; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five brothers, Donald, Gilbert, Richard, Gerald and Philip; two sisters, Phyllis Kane and Geraldine Van Odenhove; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will also be missed by special friends, Ethel and John Surles of Okeechobee, Fla. He was predeceased by a son, Ross Grindle, a sister, Pauline Fletcher, and a brother, Thomas.

Graveside services will be held in the springtime at Hillside Cemetery, Waltham.
