Frances M. (MacDonald) Williams

QUINCY, MASS. - Frances M. (MacDonald) Williams, age 80, of Quincy, Mass., passed away Dec. 23, 1999, at her home after a brief illness. born in Danvers, Mass., she was raised and educated in Beverly and had lived in the South Shore area most of her life.

She was past president of the Women’s Club, a member of the Whitman Garden Club, and the Whitman’s Senior Citizen’s Club.

Frances was the beloved wife of the late Alfred H. Williams Sr.; beloved mother of Judith E. Millar of Cambridge, Mass., Alfred H. Williams Jr. of Quincy, Barry K. Williams of Smyrna, Ga., and Frances W. DeRosa of Norwood, Mass.; sister of James MacDonald of North Franklin, Conn., and Barbara Livingston of Guilford, Conn. She was also survived by five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Dec. 28, 1999, at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home, 326 Copeland St., West Quincy, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Joseph’s Church. Interment was private. Donations in her memory may be made to the Hospice of the South Shore, 100 Baystate Drive, Braintree, MA 02184.

Albert Earl Farley

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Albert Earl Farley, Southwest Harbor, beloved husband of Jill (DeVisme) Farley, died Nov. 28, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 2, 1941, in Tremont, the son of Earl W. and Lyllis (Lunt) Farley.

He was employed at Wilbur Yachts in Manset for many years as a lead person in the yacht finishing department. Mr. Farley was an expert varnisher. He enjoyed hiking, biking, gardening, fishing, NASCAR racing, and his cats. He enjoyed early morning coffee at Gott’s Store with his many friends.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Rudolph Farley of Hope, R.I., Owen Farley of Barrington, R.I., and one sister, Aerial Young of Greenville, R.I. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jill; two beloved sons, Scott Farley and wife, Heidi (Kelly) Farley, of West Tremont, Christopher Farley and wife, Aleshia (Carris) Farley, of Bangor; one beloved daughter, Lisa Farley of Otter Creek; four wonderful grandchildren, Emily and Scott of West Tremont, Jessica and Nicklaus of Bangor; brothers, Merton of Orrington, Elwell of Southwest Harbor and Thomas of North Ellsworth; four sisters, Marcia (Farley) Beal of Manset, Edith (Farley) Closson of Tremont, Eleanor (Farley) Butler of Seal Cove and Earlene (Farley) Kelly of East Holden.

At Albert’s request, there will be no visiting hours. A celebration of his life will be held 12 noon Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at the Tremont Congregational Church, with a reception to follow at the church vestry. A private burial will be held at Mt. Height cemetery in Southwest Harbor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SPCA, Main Street, Southwest Harbor, as Albert had a great love for cats. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

Doris Smith Jeffers

OTTER CREEK and SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Doris Smith Jeffers died Oct. 12, 1999, at a San Francisco health-care facility. She was a twin born Sept. 25. Her twin brother is Donald G. Smith and they were born to George and Bessie Smith of Otter Creek.

In addition to her brother, she is survived by sisters, Bernice Peters and Theresa Salisbury; her loving daughters, Dede Jeffers-Paine and Connie Jeffers-Hector; two nephews, Paul S. Richardson and Julian Peters; four grandchildren, Kim Rice, Michelle MacQuinn-Kane, Stacey E. Crowley and Jennifer Shulman; one grandson, R. Paul MacQuinn Jr.; many cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Blair Jeffers; brother, Julian Smith; sister, Gladys Richardson; sister-in-law, Beulah Kimball; nephews, Roger Richardson, Kippy Smith and Tim Smith, and sister-in-law, Arlene Smith.

A graveside service will be announced at a later date.

Kizzie B. Billings

DEER ISLE - Kizzie B. Billings, 77, of Deer Isle died on Dec. 13, 1999, at an Ellsworth health-care facility. She was born in Brooksville on Aug. 17, 1922, the daughter of Herbert and Clarissa (Babson) Black.

She graduated from Brooksville High School. She was a member of the Stonington RLDS Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, Melvin Billings. She is survived by her children, Bonnie and his wife, Linda Billings, Ronald and his wife, Genice Billings, Jo and her husband, George Larrabee, Georgia and her husband, Brent Morey, and Nelson and his wife, Leslee Billings; grandchildren, Jason, Jesse, Kristobel, Ben, Emmi, Mark, Terry, Samantha and Tom; and one great-grandchild, Lanie; many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at 1 p.m. at Gray’s Hill Cemetery, Little Deer Isle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stonington RLDS Church or the Deer Isle Fire Department.

Frances Isadora "Dora" Smith

ELLSWORTH and SURRY - Frances Isadora "Dora" Smith, 91, died Dec. 16, 1999, at an Ellsworth health-care facility. She was born Nov. 2, 1908, in Surry, the daughter of Della M. Handy.

She attended the Surry Methodist Church and was a member of Arbutus Grange No. 456 and the Surry Historical Society. Dora loved children and took care of them for many years; she was also a caregiver to others who were less fortunate.

Dora is survived by a daughter, Juanita Higgins and her husband, Lewis; one granddaughter, Sherylin L.H. Bouschee and her husband, Rodney, of Franklin; one grandson, Christopher A. Higgins of Sullivan; two great-grandchildren, David E. Pinkham Jr. of Bangor and Bobbi Lee Pinkham of UMO, Orono; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Llewellyn Smith.

A memorial service was held Dec. 28, 1999, at the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth, UCC, with the Rev. James Wood officiating. Interment was at North Bend Cemetery, Surry. The family suggests that friends who wish may make contributions in Dora’s memory to the Courtland Living Center, Court Street, Ellsworth. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

Alice (Stevens) Sargent

SORRENTO - Alice (Stevens) Sargent, 77, died unexpectedly Dec. 26, 1999, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born April 25, 1922, at Lee, the daughter of Guy and Hattie (Delano) Stevens.

She was the wife of the late Camden Sargent Jr. She graduated from Lee Academy and the Maine School of Commerce in Bangor. Alice taught for a brief time at the Sullivan High School before becoming secretary to the Superintendent of Schools for Union 96, a position she held for 36 years, retiring in 1987. While working full-time, she also raised a family and was involved with her community.

She served as town clerk and treasurer for many years for Sorrento, on the local school committee, was a member of the Frenchman’s Bay Library Committee and served as treasurer for the Long Pond Water Co.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Steven, and his wife, Penny, of Brewer; her daughter, Brenda, and her husband, Edward Murphy, of Panama City Beach, Fla.; and her grandchildren, Ryan, Joy and Ben Murphy and his wife, Mandy, and Jennifer Sargent; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband in 1996 and by four brothers, Floyd, Vinal, Frank "Clayton" and Silas "Chip" Stevens, and one sister, Ruth Smith.

A graveside service was held Dec. 29, 1999, at the Doane’s Point Cemetery, Sorrento. Arrangements are in the care of Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Frenchman’s Bay Library, c/o Mary Welch, RR 1 Box 146, Gouldsboro 04607.

Russell G. Borow

HOLDEN - Russell G. Borow, 38, died unexpectedly Nov. 21, 1999, at his Holden residence. He was born in New London, Conn., Jan. 25, 1961, the son of Thomas J. and Barbara L. (Wennerstrand) Borow.

Russell grew up and spent most of his life in Ellsworth, where he graduated from Ellsworth High School. He traveled and worked in several states including Oklahoma, Texas and California prior to moving back to Maine. He was employed by Gerry Hill Well Drilling in Bucksport for 12 years.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Waterville, are three brothers, Curtis G. Borow and Wesley M. Borow, both of California, and Ellery J. Borow of Waterville; two nieces and two nephews; many friends.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer.

Willis "Bill" W. Strout

MILBRIDGE - Willis "Bill" W. Strout, 68, died Dec. 12, 1999, at a Bangor hospital surrounded by his family. He was born Oct. 2, 1931, at Milbridge, the son of Hugh and Althea (Washburn) Strout.

He served in the USMC during the Korean War. He worked as the Maine sales representative for J.L. Hammett Co. for 33 years, retiring in 1997. While working, he had the opportunity to make many friends throughout the state in the education community.

He was a member of the Milbridge Congregational Church and had served as a director of the Milbridge Medical Center from its founding. Bill was a member of Pleiades Lodge No. 173 AF & AM of Milbridge and the Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor. He served the town as a selectman and member of the planning board. He will be remembered by many as a man with a great sense of humor and often used it as an auctioneer for many local charities and was a man who loved to dance.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ellen Jean of Milbridge; three children, Michael and his wife, Susanne, of Brooklin, Stephen and his wife, Katherine, of Hampden and Kelly and her husband, Tom Sauberlich, of Groton, Mass.; six grandchildren, Jason, Kara, Adam, Kassie, Stephen II and Joshua; one brother, Hugh "Bud" Strout of Bangor; one sister, Patricia Morrison of Calais; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Maurice Miller.

A funeral service was held Dec. 15, 1999, at the Milbridge Congregational Church, with the Rev. Robert Simon officiating. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery, Milbridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Milbridge Congregational Church, the Milbridge Medical Center or Petit Manan Ambulance Corp., all of Milbridge 04658. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Main Street, Milbridge.

Arthur M. Basley

ELLSWORTH - Arthur M. Basley, 73, died at his Ellsworth residence, Friday, Dec. 24, 1999. He was born in Lubec, July 10, 1926, the son of Willis G. and Delia (Pike) Basley.

Arthur was a 1945 graduate of Lubec High School and attended the University of Maine in Brunswick and Husson College in Bangor. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. While living in Lubec, he was employed by Sherwood Prout of Lubec Farms, the Puss ’n Boots Cat Food Co., and the M.O. Ramsdell Poultry Farm. Arthur enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1956 and retired from that service as chief petty officer in 1975 at Southwest Harbor. While living in Southwest Harbor, he was employed by the R.M. Norwood Building & Construction Co. Arthur was a member of the Lubec Grange and a member of Tremont Lodge No. 77 AF & AM in Southwest Harbor. He was a member and former trustee of the Southwest Harbor Congregational Church.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Jane (Collins) Basley of Ellsworth; his two sons, David J. Basley and his wife, Lisa, of Ashland and Peter T. Basley and his wife, Vicki, of Bass Harbor; one sister, Phyllis P. Ingalls of Lubec; one brother, Raymond A. Basley of Lisbon; three grandchildren, Kelly Basley of Ashland, Brent and Heather Basley of Bass Harbor; one niece and two nephews.

Public and Masonic memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at the Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to the Charles K. Sleight Scholarship Fund, University of Maine, Orono, ME 04469.

Lloyd C. Small

GOULDSBORO - Lloyd C. Small, 72, died as the result of an automobile accident in Gouldsboro, Nov. 23, 1999. He was born at Harrington, Feb. 16, 1927, the son of Harry and Theresa (Stevens) Small. During WWII he served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, and his son, Harold, of Gouldsboro; one grandson, Robert Hodge of Waterford; one brother, Stanley and his wife, Betty, of Bangor; one sister, Marion Dow of Ellsworth; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth, and by a son, Robert, in 1985.

At this time there are no services planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 346, Augusta, ME 04332-0346.

Margaret Walker Sylvester

JUNO BEACH, FLA. and HANCOCK POINT - Margaret Walker Sylvester, 90, of Juno Beach and Hancock Point, passed away peacefully Dec. 4, 1999. She was the beloved widow of Asher E. Sylvester.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Gifford) Salisbury and Pat (Howard) Youmans; grandchildren, Katie Merle, Jane (Steven) Davis, Margaret (Thomas) Burdick, Charles (Marissa) Salisbury, Gifford Salisbury Jr,; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Sarah Davis.

Margaret was a longtime resident of Massachusetts and a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington in 1930.

A memorial service will be held in Hancock Point in July of 2000.

Kendall Eugene Allen Jr.

BLUE HILL - Kendall Eugene Allen Jr. 72, died Dec. 10, 1999, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 28, 1927, in Blue Hill, the son of Alice Agnes (Webber) and Kendall Eugene Allen Sr. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Kendall’s first job was working in the fire tower at Blue Hill. He was a forest ranger for the state of Maine Forestry Department for 20 years and was a former tax collector and treasurer for the town of Surry. He was a member of Lygonia Lodge No. 40 AF & AM of Ellsworth and the Odd Fellows of Blue Hill.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Leona (Fowler) Allen of Blue Hill; two sons, Bruce Eugene Allen of Presque Isle and William Albert Allen and his wife, Deena, of Ellsworth; one daughter, Linda Jean Oyster and her husband, Anthony, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Earle, Shannon, Anthony, Tyson, Amy, Stephen and Mark; seven great-grandchildren.

A service was held Dec. 13, 1999, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. Leo James Michaud officiating. Private Interment was at North Bend Cemetery, Surry. At the family’s request, gifts in Kendall’s memory may be made to the Blue Hill Hospital Building Fund, P.O. Box 823, Blue Hill.

Arthur Foote

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Arthur Foote, 88, died Dec. 9, 1999, at his home on Clark Point Road, Southwest Harbor.

Dr. Foote was a retired Unitarian Universalist minister; a graduate of Harvard, Class of 1933, and Meadville-Lombard Theological School. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1956. After serving parishes in Stockton and Sacramento, Calif., he was for 25 years the minister of Unity Church in Saint Paul, Minn. Since retiring to his wife’s ancestral home, built by her great-great-grandfather, Capt. Nathan Clark (c. 1812), Dr. Foote pursued a second career as a stoneware potter until 1987.

His wife, Rebecca Carroll Clark Foote, died in 1993. He is survived by his daughter, Frances Foote Stehman of Mount Desert; and his two sons, Nathan Clark Foote of Southbank, B.C., Canada, and Caleb Foote, MD, of Oakland, Calif., and Southwest Harbor. Dr. Foote is also survived by a brother; eight grandchildren, including his granddaughter, Mrs. Pepper Cwik of Mount Desert, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

His ashes will be buried with his wife’s in the Clark family burying ground on the Claremont Road. There will be no public service. Those who wish to may make contributions in his memory to the Southwest Harbor Public Library, P.O. Box 157, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679, to Unity Church, 732 Holly Ave., St. Paul, MN 55104, or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

Charlie A. Fowler

SURRY - Charlie A. Fowler, 79, died unexpectedly April 19, 2000, in Ellsworth. He was born Nov. 8, 1920, in Milford, the son of Ansel and Ethel (McLaughlin) Fowler.

Charlie enjoyed the outdoors and hunted for many years. He was a Navy veteran and also retired from the U.S. Postal Service, and was a volunteer fireman in Surry.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lurlene (Black) Fowler; a son, Donald Fowler and his wife, Pearl, of Epsom, N.H.; a daughter, Shirley St. Ours and her husband, Richard, of Ellsworth; three brothers, Stanley of North Ellsworth, Ansel and Orman, both of Olamon; five sisters, Leona Allen of Ellsworth, Arlene Spaulding of Fremont, N.H., Virginia Madden of Greenfield, Julia Carter of Ellsworth and Velma Buxton of Costigan; six grandchildren, seven great-granddaughters, many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held April 22, 2000, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with Richard Crowley, minister of the Jehovah’s Witness Church, officiating. Interment was at North Bend Cemetery, Surry. If friends wish, donations in Charlie’s memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Maine Affiliate Inc., 10 Bangor St., Suite F, Augusta 04330.

Myrtle B. "Grammie Mert" Anderson

EAST SULLIVAN - Myrtle B. "Grammie Mert" Anderson, 100, wife of the late George W. Anderson, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 23, 2000, after a long and happy life. She was born in East Sullivan, Oct. 11, 1899, the daughter of Daniel and Carrie (Hodgkins) Bunker.

Myrtle was holder of the Boston Post Cane for the town of Sullivan since 1997.

She is survived by eight grandchildren, Richard, Laura and her husband, Dan, Norma, Linda and her husband, Lou, Louise and her husband, Bob, Paul, Evelyn and her husband, Jimmy, David and his wife, Carol; 22 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great grandchildren; a brother, Carroll and his wife, Lois; a sister, Ethel; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, Myrtle was predeceased by a daughter, Dorothy Wilkinson; a brother, Herbert; and two sisters, Inez and Ida. She will be lovingly remembered by all her extended family and friends.

A funeral service was held April 26, 2000, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. Pat Butler officiating. Interment was at Simpson Cemetery, Sullivan. Gifts in memory of Myrtle may be sent to the Activity Fund at Collier’s Rehab and Nursing Center, 33 Birch Ave., Ellsworth, ME 04605.

Minnie D. "Betty" Olsen

ELLSWORTH - Minnie D. "Betty" Olsen, 88, passed away on April 18, 2000, at her residence with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. Betty was born April 26, 1911, in Dorchester, Mass., to Elizabeth and Charles Davis.

Betty, as she was called by her friends, was a member of the Mother Church—The First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, Mass. She worked for a number of years for the Christian Publishing Society in Boston. She was a lifetime member of the George F. Bryant VFW Auxiliary in Quincy, Mass., and was past president of the same. She worked with the Junior Girls Unit there for several years and was also involved with Girl Scouts. Betty was also a lifetime member of DAV Auxiliary Cape Cod Unit No. 96. For many years, Betty was a volunteer at Meals for Me in Ellsworth.

Betty was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Arndt V. Olsen, in 1981 and also a sister, Rose D. Clark. She is survived by her daughter, Dagmar Lee, and her husband, Charles "Bud" Lee, of Ellsworth. Also surviving her are two grandchildren, Donald A. Lee and his wife, Corinne, of Sullivan and a granddaughter, Sherie A. Lee-Eaton of Ellsworth. She leaves five great-grandchildren, Taylor, Toya, Connor, Elena and Cassidy. Betty is also survived by two sisters, Marion Francis of Norwood, Mass., and Gladys Heald of Auburn. Betty was a very sweet lady and will be missed by her many friends, who all loved her dearly.

At Betty’s request there will be no visiting hours nor funeral services. If friends wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Youth Camp, c/o Robert Maddocks, United Baptist Church of Ellsworth. Rest in peace, Betty, as you are now in God’s House.
