Irving C. Braley

ELLSWORTH - Irving C. Braley, 86, died April 23, 2000, at Eastern Maine Medical Center after a short illness. He was born Sept. 12, 1913.

Irving lived in Otis and Ellsworth most of his life. He was a deacon and longtime member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Ellsworth and worked in the Awana program there for several years. He was an avid outdoorsman who liked to ice fish in the winter and trout fish and bird hunt in the fall with his many friends.

During World War II he worked as a welder at Bath Iron Works. He also worked for Murry Machine, Raymond Sargent’s Construction Co., and at Linnehan’s Ford in Ellsworth until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine Braley of Ellsworth; two sons, Dale Braley and his wife, Margaret, of Austin, Texas, and Bruce Braley and his wife, Becky, of St. Cloud, Fla.; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Joan Herrick.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2000, at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, Park and School streets, Ellsworth. Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery in Otis. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Land Fund of the Emmanuel Baptist Church, Ellsworth 04605. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Ida W. Lockhart

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Ida W. Lockhart, 79, died Feb. 6, 2000. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mt. Desert.

Marion A. Sargent

BAR HARBOR - Graveside services for Marion A. Sargent, who died Jan. 10, 2000, in Bar Harbor will be held at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth, on Sunday, April 30, at 1:30 p.m., with Pastor Robert Maddocks officiating.

JoAnn Boyer Wheeler

SULLIVAN - JoAnn Boyer Wheeler, 72, died April 21, 2000, at an Ellsworth health-care facility. She was born Nov. 19, 1927, in Pittsburg, Kan., the daughter of Walter W. and Lillian Mae (Patterson) Boyer.

She was a past president of Eagles Lodge in Fresno, Calif., and a member of Irene Chapter No. 97, Order of the Eastern Star, in Ellsworth. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sullivan.

She is survived by one son, John Timmerman and his wife, Linda, of Harker Heights, Texas; one daughter, Gail Hastings and her husband, Brian, of Sullivan; one sister, Kathleen Adams of Hope Mills, N.C.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held April 25, 2000, at United Methodist Church in Sullivan, with the Rev. Stephen Loan officiating. Interment will be in Stone Chapel Cemetery, Montrose, Mo., at a later date. If friends wish, they may make donations in JoAnn’s memory to Irene Chapter No. 97 OES, for Alzheimer’s, care of Jerri Holt, P.O. Box 389, Ellsworth 04605. Linda Marie Cousins

NORTH BLUE HILL - Linda Marie Cousins, 53, died unexpectedly April 23, 2000, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Nov. 23, 1946, in Castine, the daughter of Linwood M. and Theresa A. (Hooper) Wescott.

Linda was a very loving person who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved children and enjoyed volunteering at the Blue Hill Consolidated School. Linda’s faith was important to her and she attended the Ellsworth Assembly of God.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 33 years, David M. Cousins; her beloved children, a son, Matthew Cousins and wife, Barbara; three daughters, Melissa Randall and husband, Stephen, and Verronika and Keeli, all of North Blue Hill; three sisters, Mrs. Vincent (Ginger) Williams and Mrs. Tom (Elizabeth) Young, both of Surry, and Mrs. Roland (Ruth) Curtis of East Blue Hill; a mother-in-law, Frances Cousins of North Blue Hill; three grandchildren, Christopher, Lucas and Elizabeth; many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held April 25, 2000 at the Blue Hill Baptist Church. Interment was at Mountain View Cemetery, Blue Hill. Those who desire may make contributions in Linda’s memory to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Healey Funeral Home, South Street, Blue Hill.

Florence L. Dumont

CORNVILLE - Florence L. Dumont, 71, beloved wife of Bernard (Bernie) Dumont, died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at her residence in Cornville following a long illness. She was born in Bangor on June 3, 1928, the daughter of Allen and Kaye (Rice) Kingsley of West Gouldsboro.

She was educated in local schools and graduated from Sullivan High School, then she graduated from the Shepard and Gill School of Nursing in Boston. For the next 19 years, she worked in nursing in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine hospitals. In June of 1967 she and her husband moved to Sorrento and in February of ’68 she went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Sorrento as a clerk. In August of ’69 she became officer in charge and in March of ’71 became the postmaster, a position she held until she retired in June of 1988. In 1993 she and her husband moved to Cornville.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Bernard, and several cousins; two brothers-in-law, Reginald and Clifford Dumont and their wives; a sister-in-law and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Creasey; and several nieces and nephews, whom she loved very much. She was predeceased by a stepfather, Harry Wasgatt.

Friends met April 9, 2000, at the Veilleux Funeral Home in Waterville. Burial was Monday, April 10, 2000, in St. Francis cemetery in Waterville. At her request there were no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her name to the Division of the Blind & Visually Impaired, 2 Anthony Ave., 73 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0073, or Health Reach Hospice Home Care, 251 North Ave., Skowhegan, ME 04976.

William "Bill" J. Meehan

ELLSWORTH - William "Bill" J. Meehan, 75, died April 11, 2000, at his home. He was born June 16, 1924, in New York City, the son of William H. and Catherine (Gillian) Meehan.

Bill worked for Geigy Chemical, the Hancock Tannery, Irving Tannery in Hartland and the East Wilton Tannery. He retired after 40 years in the industry.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Hazel (Dawson) Meehan; a daughter, Maureen Pelletier and husband, Larry, of Ellsworth; a granddaughter, Meghan, of Ellsworth; a sister, Helen Watry of Lakewood, Calif.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2000, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with Father Leo James Michaud presiding. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ellsworth. The family suggests that those who desire may make contributions in Bill’s memory to the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Mary Dow Center for Cancer Care, 50 Union St., Ellsworth 04605.

A. Tucker Cluett

BLUE HILL - A. Tucker Cluett, 65, died at the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital on April 12, 2000, after a brief illness.

Tucker had many friends and enjoyed life and outdoor sports to the fullest. A wonderful cook, he loved entertaining guests both in his home and at the MacLennan Lodge, an Atlantic salmon fishing camp he owned on the Upsalquitch River in New Brunswick, Canada. For many years Tucker cruised on his boat, The Questing Beast, and was a past commodore of the Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club in Blue Hill. In addition to his fishing and sailing interests, Tucker was an avid hunter who enjoyed duck hunting at the Preston Mountain Club in Kent, Conn., as well as quail and dove shooting in Georgia.

Tucker worked for the American Standard Co. and the Scovill Hoe Co. Recently he served as a trustee of the Salisbury School in Salisbury, Conn., where he took an active interest in the fund-raising activities of the school.

He is survived by his stepmother, Virginia A. Cluett; his brother, Mark S. Cluett; his sister-in-law, Elizabeth G. Cluett; three nieces, Amanda C. Stanton, Elizabeth C. Thors, Julia S. Cluett; three grandnieces, a stepsister, Ann A. Smith, and a stepbrother, Ralph O. Smith. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. G. Alfred Cluett Jr.

A celebration of Tucker’s life will be held during the summer. The family suggests that those who desire make a contribution in his memory to the Atlantic Salmon Federation, P.O. Box 807, Calais, ME 04619 or to the Blue Hill Library, Blue Hill, ME 04614.

Eleanor Greene Long

EAST BLUE HILL - Eleanor Greene Long, 82, died April 8, 2000, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Sept. 11, 1917, in East Blue Hill, the daughter of Fred L. and Beulah (Grindle) Greene.

She was a graduate of George Stevens Academy, Gorham Teachers College and the University of Maine. She was an elementary education teacher in the Harrington, Surry and Blue Hill school systems. Eleanor was a member of the Maine Retired Teachers Association, the East Blue Hill Baptist Church, the Blue Hill Baptist Church, the American Baptist Women and the East Blue Hill Village Association. Because of her enjoyment in music, she was active in the Bagaduce Chorale and the Blue Hill Music Lending Library.

Eleanor is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Kathy Long of East Blue Hill and Benjamin Long and Cheryl Hutchins of Vienna, Va.; two brothers, William Greene of Blue Hill and Paul Greene of Lexington, Mass.; five nephews and nieces. Eleanor was predeceased in 1979 by her husband of 34 years, Verrill D. Long.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 13, 2000, at the Blue Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Comeau presiding. Interment will be at Seaside Cemetery, Blue Hill. Those who desire may make contributions in Eleanor’s memory to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Healey Funeral Home, South Street, Blue Hill.

Robert S. Lawson

FAIRFIELD GLADE, TENN. - Robert S. Lawson, age 77, of Fairfield Glade, Tenn., and formerly of Naples, Fla., and Plymouth, Mich., passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2000, after a brief illness. He was born in Redford, Mich., Nov. 24, 1922, the son of Roy C. and Edna L. (Stevens) Lawson.

He was a graduate of Plymouth High School, the University of Michigan School of Business Administration (BBA), and the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University (JD). He was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity and the Michigan Bar Association.

As a first lieutenant, he was a member of the 401st Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force, and served as a B-17 bomber pilot flying 35 missions in the European theater of operations during WWII. He was awarded the Air Medal with five oak-leaf clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Following his graduation from Detroit College of Law, he was appointed as a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation and served two years in Beaver, Pa., and Detroit, Mich.

He worked as an attorney for Ford Motor Co., Dearborn, Mich., in real property management until his retirement. During this time he was a member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church. Other community service activities included president of the Plymouth University of Michigan Club and coaching basketball. He was an avid tennis player, voracious reader, skilled woodworker and expert handyman.

Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet Osgood Lawson of Fairfield Glade, Tenn., and Corea; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisbeth L. and Dr. Alan S. Rosenfeld of Laconia, N.H.; two sons and daughters-in-law, James S. and Anne M. (Ferrell) Lawson of Dexter, Mich., Peter S. and Lynn (Gardner) Lawson of Northville, Mich.; eight grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Nina Jean and Robert G. Marshall of Pensacola, Fla. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Robert will be remembered by his extended family and many special friends.

A private memorial service was held at the Burris Funeral Home on Thursday, March 30. Interment will be at the Prospect Harbor Cemetery, Prospect Harbor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Cumberland County, P.O. Box 512, Crossville, TN 38557 or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements by Burris Funeral Home, Crossville.

William Harley Brown

ELLSWORTH FALLS - William Harley Brown, 84, died April 17, 2000, at his home. He was born April 27, 1915, the son of Leon Higgins and Alta (Quinn) Brown, at Ellsworth Falls, where he lived his whole life.

He was a graduate of Ellsworth High School, Class of 1934, and attended Maine School of Commerce. William was a forester and a farmer and enjoyed gardening. He attended the Ellsworth Falls Congregational Church and was a director of Hancock County Creamery for 11 years. He was a life member of Lygonia Masonic Lodge No. 40 AF & AM and the Order of Eastern Star, Irene Chapter No. 97, as well as Mariaville Grange No. 441.

William is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rhoda (Carr) Brown of Ellsworth Falls; a son, Howard O. Brown and his wife, Evelyn, of Westminster, S.C.; a brother, Lincoln Brown of Ellsworth; a sister, Jeanette Brown of Middlebury, Vt.; seven nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held April 19, 2000, at the Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Friends who wish may make donations in William’s memory to Mariaville Grange No. 441, in care of Reta C. Dunn, P.O. Box 306, Ellsworth 04605.

Earl L. "Finny" Gray

ELLSWORTH - Earl L. "Finny" Gray, 100, died April 10, 2000, at a Penobscot health-care facility. He was born Oct. 12, 1899, in Ellsworth Falls, the son of George E. and Mary (Garland) Gray.

He graduated from Ellsworth High School. Earl was a clerk for many years in Treworgy’s Store, which went down the river when the dam broke. He owned and operated the Whitcomb, Haynes & Whitney store for many years and upon his retirement, sold it to Mike Clough. Earl was a true legend of Infant Street. His camp was the second one on Beech Hill Pond in Otis.

He is survived by Daniel Pelley, who was like a son to Earl, and his wife, Mae, of Hancock; and the following members of Dan’s family, who were "family" to Earl, Kathy Emerton and her son, C.J. Lewis, of Blue Hill, Richard Pelley and his wife, Mary Ann, of Sarasota, Fla., Coleen Strout and her husband, Harold, of West Palm Beach, Fla., Daniel Pelley Jr. and his son, Andy Pelley, of East New Portland, Graydon Lewis of Freeport and Virginia Pelley of New Castle, Pa.; and a very dear friend, Don Loncto of Plantation No. 8.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2000, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with Pastor Robert Maddocks officiating. Interment will be in Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.

Chester Ronald Johnson

NORTH PORT, FLA. and COREA - Chester Ronald Johnson, 75, of North Port, Fla., and Corea, died in a Port Charlotte, Fla., hospital Thursday, March 30, 2000, after being ill for three months. He was born Sept. 26, 1924, at Bar Harbor, the son of Chester Arthur and Hazel Reed Johnson.

He worked many years as the painting maintenance supervisor for the Bangor School Department. He was well liked by all who knew him. Mr. Johnson served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.

He leaves his wife of nearly 44 years, Lorraine Crabtree Johnson; a son, Randy and his wife, Sonya, of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Sheila and husband, Jon Clapp, of Bangor; also five beloved grandchildren, Katrina and Nicholas Johnson of Venice, Fla., Adam Gray of Port Charlotte, Fla., Rose and Ashley Clapp of Bangor. He has two surviving sisters, Sandra and husband, Mike Saunders, of Trenton and Patricia and husband, Al Beal, of Surry; also many beloved nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in Corea at a later date.

Joan Staats

WEST TREMONT - Joan Staats, 78, of West Tremont, died April 13, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born in Chicago, July 31, 1921, the daughter of the late Walter J. and Betty Pischel Staats, and also was preceded in death by her beloved sister, B.J. Hood and nephew, David C. Hood.

Miss Staats moved from Illinois to Mount Desert Island in 1949, and was employed by The Jackson Laboratory as medical librarian for 35 years, retiring in 1984 as senior staff scientist. She published many papers in the scientific media.

She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, being active in St. Saviour’s, Bar Harbor, for 25 years and in St. Andrew and St. John, Southwest Harbor, in recent years. She was active in the American Association of University Women, both in the MDI branch and on the state division level. She served on the warrant committees of both the Town of Bar Harbor and the Town of Tremont. She was a corporator and director of the Jesup Memorial Library for over 35 years. She was a member at various times at AAUW, NAACP, Hospice of Hancock County, Genetics Society of America, American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Medical Library Association and Sigma Delta Epsilon.

Upon her retirement from The Jackson Laboratory, the Lab’s medical library was named "The Joan Staats Library." She also was honored by being selected a Fellow of the Medical Library Association, and by being elected to membership in Sigma Delta Epsilon at the University of Illinois. She was a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals. She has been listed in "American Men of Science," "Who’s Who of American Women," "Who’s Who in the East," and the "International Dictionary of Biography."

She is survived by several cousins and by a special friend, Frances Grossman.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2000, at St. John’s Church in Southwest Harbor. Those who choose may make gifts in her memory to St. Andrew and St. John Church or to The Jackson Laboratory. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

Gary E. York

SORRENTO - Gary E. York, 51, died April 5, 2000, at his home in the arms of his wife, surrounded by those who loved him. He was born at Ellsworth, Sept. 24, 1948, the son of Bud and Pat (Mosley) York.

Gary proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was a survivor of the U.S.S. Forrestal fire. He worked in the blueberry industry for many years until he found his true calling, emergency medicine. Gary became involved in EMS through his experience as a firefighter with the Sorrento Volunteer Fire Dept. For the past several years, he has worked as an EMT with County Ambulance in Ellsworth, a job he truly loved. He continued his service with the Sorrento VFD as the deputy chief and EMS officer.

Gary is survived by his wife, Fona (Guyette) York of Sorrento; one daughter, Tanya and her husband, Randy Farmer, of Massachusetts; three brothers, Lucky and his wife, Gloria, of Trenton, Dennis and his wife, Dee, of New Jersey and Erwin and his daughter, Ariel, of Bar Harbor; his stepmother, Faye York of Ellsworth; two stepsisters, Betty Gordon of Ellsworth and Ruby and her husband, Joe Joy, of Sullivan; his aunts and uncles, Erwin York and his wife, Holly. of Maryland and Annabelle Buzzell of Ellsworth, Myrle Beal of Southwest Harbor, Ray Mosley and his wife, Gloria, of Franklin and Lester Mosley of Florida. He will also be remembered by his mother-in-law, Virginia Guyette of Sorrento and her sister, Madeline Clement of Sedgwick; his brothers-in-law, Walter Jr. and his wife, Janis, Clement and his wife, Susan, and Timothy, all of Sorrento, and Michael and his wife, Marinka, of Ellsworth; a sister-in-law, Lea and her husband, Mike Pinkham, of Sullivan; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents.

Gary touched many lives and will be remembered by many close friends and co-workers.

A celebration of his life was held April 8, 2000, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. Linda Kimmelman officiating. Interment was at Bayview Cemetery, Franklin. A memorial reception was held after the burial at the Franklin Veteran’s Club. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, 04011 or the Sorrento Volunteer Fire Dept., Sorrento, ME 04677.

Joan M. Craft

LAMOINE - Joan M. Craft, 64, beloved wife of 42 years of Warren W. Craft Sr., died March 3, 2000, at a Blue Hill hospital. She was born April 23, 1935, in Kearny, N.J., the daughter of Edward and Stella Yuknalis.

After retiring from Lucent Technologies, she and Warren moved to Lamoine. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Hancock County Republican Committee.

She is survived by two sons, Warren Craft Jr. of Plano, Texas, and Wayne Craft and his wife, Sherri, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one daughter, Colleen Range and her husband, Ralph, of Frenchtown, N.J.; six grandchildren, Warren III, Benjamin, Malia, Victoria, Caroline and Christopher; a sister, Linda McFarland of Charleston, S.C.; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Nelson.

A memorial luncheon will be held at noon, Saturday, April 15, 2000, at the Father Kinney Center, Ellsworth. Everyone is welcome to attend. Friends who wish are asked to make memorial donations to the Ellsworth Kiwanis Club Charities, P.O. Box 1045, Ellsworth 04605. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.
