Myrtle Jeffers Iveney

NORTHEAST HARBOR - Myrtle Jeffers Iveney, 91, died Nov. 17, 1999, at a Bar Harbor health-care facility. She was born June 8, 1908, in Milbridge, the daughter of Alder Blair and Rosanna (Moffitt) Jeffers.

She was a graduate of Milbridge High School in 1927 and worked for the telephone company for 10 years until her marriage in 1930 to Frederick "Doc" Iveney. They lived in Northeast Harbor for 64 of their married years. She attended St. Mary’s by the Sea Church.

Myrtle is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; nephew, William Kimball; brother, Blair Jeffers; and sister, Beulah Kimball.

Thanks to everyone at the Summit House for their years of wonderful care and a very special thanks to Jeff Springer for his loving care and devotion.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at Forest Hill Cemetery, Northeast Harbor. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

Justin Oley Johnson Jr.

HANCOCK - Justin Oley Johnson Jr., 79, died at his home Nov. 1, 1999, after many years of invalidism. He was born Jan. 2, 1920, at Fairfield, the son of Justin O. and Ethel (Hodgkins) Johnson Sr.

A graduate of Waterville High School and the University of Maine, Class of 1943, Justin served as a radioman in the Navy and then was an instructor at the University of Maine, Orono, in the engineering department from 1946 to 1951. Justin was a research and development engineer for Honeywell Inc., Fort Washington, Pa., from 1951 until his retirement in 1982. A 25-year resident of Levittown, Pa., he was an elder and teacher at the First Presbyterian Church; a board member and active volunteer with the Special Teens Project. A gentle and caring man, he was greatly liked and respected. In Hancock, he belonged to the Union Congregational Church and was a member of the Outreach Committee.

Justin is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lois Crabtree Johnson; sons, Ronald of Bedford, N.Y., and Justin III at home; daughter, Elizabeth Ducharme of Bangor; grandchildren, Romin, Rachel, Rona and Riky of Bedford, N.Y.; brothers, Howard of Rhode Island, Clayton and Robert of Florida; a sister, Augusta Marie Alexander of Florida; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and by his first wife, Phyllis Young, in 1950.

A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the Union Congregational Church of Hancock, with the Rev. Roger Plummer officiating. If friends wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Union Congregational Church for either its music or emergency medical fund, care of Bea Foss, Hancock. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

Gilbert Franklin Black

TREMONT - Gilbert Franklin Black, 87, died Nov. 3, 1999, at MDI Hospital. He was born May 17, 1912, in Tremont, the son of Allen Leslie and Fanny Etta (Torrey) Black.

He attended Pemetic High School and lobstered for most of his life. He enjoyed people.

Gilbert is survived by three sons, Leslie Black and his wife, Judy, of West Roxbury, Mass., James Black and his wife, Sally, of Northeast Harbor and Robert Black and his wife, Cheryl, of Shrewsbury, Vt.; two daughters, Sarah Bridges of Ellsworth and Jean Richardson and her husband, Richard, of Hancock; one sister, Harriet Dow of Bar Harbor; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Helena Black.

A funeral service was held Nov. 6, 1999, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. John Dunn officiating. Interment was at Head of the Harbor Cemetery, Bass Harbor. Donations in Gilbert’s memory may be made to the Southwest Harbor/ Tremont Ambulance, care of Ben Harper, Southwest Harbor 04679.

Robert Bennett Cairns

LITTLE DEER ISLE - Robert Bennett Cairns, a summer resident of Little Deer Isle, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, in a car accident outside Orland. He was 66. Dr. Cairns was the Cary C. Boshamer Professor of Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and director of the university’s Center for Developmental Science.

The American Psychological Association honored Cairns with its 1998 G. Stanley Hall Award for outstanding contributions to developmental psychology, including research, student training and other scholarly endeavors. Other recent honors included the French Embassy Medal (1996) for his international, cross-cultural approach to issues in developmental research, the National University of Mexico Medal (1995) for outstanding scientific contributions, and the distinguished alumni award from Point Loma College. In 1995, Cairns was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy degree from the University of Stockholm (Sweden).

His books include "Social Development" (1979), "The Analysis of Social Interactions" (1979), "Lifelines and Risks" (with B.D. Cairns, 1994), and "Developmental Science" (with G.H. Elder Jr., and E.J. Costello, 1996), "Aggression and Violence" (with D. Stoff, 1996) and "Methods and Models for Studying the Individual" (with L. Bergman and J. Kagan, 1998.

A native of Los Angeles, Cairns earned a bachelor’s degree in 1955 from Pasadena College, graduating magna cum laude, and a doctorate in 1960 from Stanford University. He was a researcher at The Jackson Laboraty in Bar Harbor prior to moving to the University of North Carolina. He also taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Indiana University.

Dr. Cairns is survived by his wife, Beverley; his three children, Charles Cairns, Bruce Cairns and Heather Cairns Ross; his five grandchildren, Ashley, Andrew, Bradley, Noah and Adelaide; his mother, Eunice Evelyn Cairns Clayton; and his brother, James Cairns.

Services will be private. Arrangements by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 14 Elm St., Bucksport.

Vera Jordan Weymouth

ELLSWORTH - Vera Jordan Weymouth, 97, died Nov. 17, 1999, at a Brewer health-care facility. She was born May 16, 1902, in Waltham, the daughter of Roland H. and Carrie Frances (Blake) Jordan.

Vera and her late husband, Merle, owned and operated the Sunset Park Lodge on Green Lake from 1955 to 1972. She worked for several years at the Trenton Country Store.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary W. Stevens of Holden; two sons, Dr. Richard J. Weymouth of Columbia, S.C., and Alan J. Weymouth of Ellsworth Falls; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Merle P. Weymouth, one sister and six brothers.

A memorial service was held Nov. 20, 1999, at Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Brewer. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make memorial gifts to the Four Town Nursing Association, Blue Hill or to the Ellsworth Public Library.

Mina Elizabeth Whitmore

ELLSWORTH - Mina Elizabeth Whitmore, 86, died Oct. 29, 1999, at an Ellsworth health-care facility. She was born March 29, 1913, in Ellsworth, the daughter of William and Charlene (Smith) Conary.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth. Mina liked to travel, did crocheting, painting, and collected dolls and hats.

She is survived by a son, Richard O. Holmes of Long Beach, Calif; a daughter, Sylvia and her husband, Vinal E. Tainter Jr., of Ellsworth; two grandsons, Troy E. Tainter and his wife, Ruth, and Jon S. Tainter, all of Ellsworth; two great-grandchildren, Erik Edward and Victoria Elizabeth Tainter. She was predeceased by her first husband, Maxwell C. Holmes, and her second husband, Joseph W. Whitmore.

A funeral service was held Nov. 1, 1999, at the First Congregational Church, Ellsworth, with the Rev. James Wood and Pastor Robert Maddocks presiding. Memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 12, Ellsworth 04605. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

Ann Knowlton Decker

DEER ISLE - Ann Knowlton Decker, 80, died Nov. 5, 1999, at a Deer Isle nursing care facility. Ann was born Nov. 13, 1918, in Deer Isle, the daughter of Karl Kent and Beatrice (Eaton) Knowlton.

Ann was a member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Rhinebeck, N.Y., and was a member of the Deer Isle Congregational Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Beatrice Handschuh and her husband, Tom, of Deer Isle, Patricia Ann Lyons and her husband, Ralph, of Kingston, N.Y.; four brothers, Eugene and Percival Knowlton of Stonington, Lawrence Knowlton of Deer Isle and William Knowlton of Thatcher, Ariz,; a sister, Karlotta Beach of Deer Isle; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Ellwood C. Decker Sr., and a son, Ellwood C. "Butch" Decker Jr.

Graveside services will be private. The family suggests that contributions in Ann’s memory be made to the Island Nursing Home, P.O. Box 125, Deer Isle 04627. Arrangements by Healey Funeral Home, South Street, Blue Hill.

Florence M. Polley

ELLSWORTH - Florence M. Polley, 84, wife of the late Forest L. Polley, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at an Ellsworth health-care facility. She was born in Ellsworth, March 5, 1915, the daughter of Albert G. and Rebecca M. (Withee) Moon.

She is survived by three children, Virginia Somers of Orrington, Esther Curtis and her husband, Sonny, of Ellsworth, and Gerald Polley and his wife, Linda, of Fargo, N.D.; 10 grandchildren, Dale Somers, Patricia Pringle, Tami MacLellan, Robert Somers, Cynthia Moir, Pamela Taylor, Michael Ireland, Jeanne Bragg, Skip Curtis, and Crystal Lindsey; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson, Joseph Taylor French, "We’ll miss you, Ninnis"; a sister, Virginia Garland of Hampden; a brother, George Moon and his wife, Ween, of Orrington; two special friends, Trudy Fox and Mary Sheppard, both of Ellsworth; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Herbert and James "Markie" Moon.

A funeral service was held Nov. 15, 1999, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. John Dunn officiating. Interment was at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to the staff at Collier’s Nursing Home.

Gary H. Jenkins

BANGOR - Gary H. Jenkins, 59, died Nov. 16, 1999, at Maine General Medical Center, Augusta, after battling a long illness. He was born in Littleton, Aug. 17, 1940, the son of Paul and Dorothy (Hobbs) Jenkins.

He was a graduate of Ellsworth High School and attended Ricker College in Houlton. Gary served in the U.S. Navy from 1958-1964. He was employed by Schenely Distributors for 19 years before opening his own business, Top Spot Billiards of Bangor in 1991.

He was a member of Lygonia Masonic Lodge No. 40, Ellsworth and was an active member of the Second Section of Anah Temple. He was past president of the North Augusta Trailblazers, past president of the Maine Snowmobile Association and member of Hermon Meadows Golf Club. Gary had a great love for the outdoors, enjoying golfing, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. He will be remembered as a loving, dedicated father, husband and son.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Augusta; three daughters, Heidi Botello and husband, Charlie of Dayton, Ohio, Wendy Parker and husband, Steve of Brewer and Heather Blanchard of Brewer; his mother, Dorothy Jenkins of Ellsworth; sister, Priscilla Lanks and husband, Tom of Pennsylvania; brother, Robert Jenkins of Scarborough; uncle, Buddy Hobbs and wife, Sally of Millinocket; eight grandchildren, Charlee, Alex, Ali, Kelsey, Katie, Meghan, John, Nicole; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Paul Jenkins. Gary’s sense of humor and compassion for others will be sadly missed.

A funeral service was held Nov. 19, 1999, at Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor, with the Rev. John Dunn officiating. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shrine Children’s Hospital, care of Anah Temple, 586 Main St., Bangor, 04401 or the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, 04011.

Barbara Byard Leach

BAR HARBOR and FRANKLIN - Barbara Byard Leach, 91, died Oct. 28, 1999, at Golden Acres in Franklin. She was born July 24, 1908, in Sedgwick, the daughter of Edward James and Alice (Blodgett) Byard.

Barbara graduated from Sedgwick High School and the Castine Normal School. She was an elementary school teacher for a number of years. Barbara was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bar Harbor, a past member of the Blue Hill Baptist Church, and several other churches. Barbara was a wonderful person and even though she did not have children she treated all of her family with much love and care as though they were her own.

She is survived by her sister, Priscilla B. Walsh of Fort Myers, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Ethel Byard of Sedgwick, Frances Byard of Blue Hill; immediate nieces and nephews, Lawrence B. Byard and his wife, Saralyn, of Sedgwick, Lucille Byard Willson and her husband, Robert, of Camden, N.Y., Sandra Byard Hill and her husband, Richard, of Blue Hill, Ragna Byard Gauger and her husband, Dr. Charles, of Norway. Barbara was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lawrence Leach, in 1987; four brothers, Paul F., John L., Ronald E., and Proctor B. Byard; and nephews, Berwin Byard and Daniel Leach. She is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Thela Leach of Orono; brother-in-law, Edward Hudson of Hyannis, Mass.; sister-in-law, Patricia Leach of Williamsburg, Va.; many grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews, who were all a significant part of Barbara’s life.

A funeral service was held Oct. 31, 1999, at the Blue Hill Baptist Church, Blue Hill, with Pastor Paul Comeau officiating. Interment at a later date will be at Mountain View Cemetery, Blue Hill.

Contributions may be made in Barbara’s memory to Golden Acres Activity Fund, Golden Acres, 80 Main St., Franklin, ME 04634, or to a church of your choice. Arrangements by Healey Funeral Home, Blue Hill.

Frederick Lief Gylfe

ELLSWORTH - Frederick Lief Gylfe, 102, died Nov. 6, 1999, at an Ellsworth health-care facility after a brief illness. He was born in Worcester, Mass., on Aug. 14, 1897, the fourth son of Gustav and Helma Gylfe.

He lived in Winter Harbor from 1991 until 1998. He was a member of the American Legion for more than 75 years and the Medinah Temple of the Shrine for more than 50 years. His military service was spent as a noncommissioned officer in the headquarters company of the 108th Infantry, 27th Division New York National Guard, from 1916 to 1919. He saw service on the Mexican border in 1916-1917. In World War I his unit was attached to the British Fourth Army in Northern France and Belgium and took part in battles at St. Quentin and Ypres. He was recently awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government in recognition of his service on French soil. After being discharged from the Army, he pursued a career in the printing trade until his retirement in 1964.

He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Julina Gylfe of Prospect Harbor; his son, Carl and his wife, Mary, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; and three grandchildren, Patricia of New York City, David of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Suzanne of Chicago.

Funeral arrangements are private.

Joseph Paul Renault

NORTHEAST HARBOR - Joseph Paul Renault, 79, died Nov. 14, 1999, at an MDI health-care facility after a long illness. He was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of Abel and Victoria (Martel) Renault.

Paul was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was employed at C.E. Wallace Plumbing Co. (now N.E. Plumbing & Heating) as a master plumber until he retired in 1982 and was caretaker of several summer homes. He was the Town of Mount Desert plumbing inspector and served on the Harbor Committee. He was a Boy Scout master in his earlier years. He enjoyed many years of square dancing as a member of the Acadian Bells & Buoys Square Dance Club of MDI. He was a member and faithful attendant of Saint Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church, where he served on the council and volunteered his services as maintenance person for many years.

Paul’s gentle, loving, kind and compassionate nature and beautiful smile gained him many friendships. His greatest love and enjoyment was his sailboat Tory-El and the many hours he spent sailing off the coast of MDI; second to which was his best pal "Lucas," a terrier-poodle that he loved dearly.

He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 25 years, Eleanor (Merchant) Renault of Northeast Harbor; four sons, Joseph Paul Jr., Terry, David and his wife, Beth Renault, all of Northeast Harbor and Robert Renault of Steven’s Point, Wis.; two daughters, Sandra Graves of Northeast Harbor and Suzanne MacLeod and husband, Robert, of Bar Harbor; two stepdaughters, Sue Taylor Barnes and husband, Rusty, of Alba, Texas, Kristy Taylor Cousins and husband, Craig, of Lamoine; one brother, George Renault and wife, Pat, of Danvers, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Renault of Summerville, Mass.; a brother-in-law, William Sheehan of Cambridge, Mass.; a special niece, Lola Lee Lowman of Hudson, Mass.; eight grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three great-stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Sylvio, Alfred and John Renault; three sisters, Marie Renault, Fredora Beady and Alma Sheehan; and a grandson, Scott Graves.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Our Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Bar Harbor, with the Revs. Joseph E. Daniels, C. James Martel and James Gower officiating. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Northeast Harbor. The family suggests that if friends desire, they may make contributions to the Northeast Harbor Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 122, Northeast Harbor, ME 04662. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

Merle Francis Bunker

SURRY - Merle Francis Bunker, 91, died Nov. 19,199, at a Penobscot health-care facility. He was born Sept. 16, 1908, in Sullivan, the son of Lewis and Elizabeth (Wood) Bunker.

Merle served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he fought in the Pacific. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the Asiastic Pacific Theater Medal. Merle was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed camping. He loved gardening and was very proud of the results.

Merle is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Cora (Saunders) Bunker of Ellsworth; a special niece and her husband, Colene and Lloyd Astbury of Blue Hill; several other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two sisters-in-aw, Frances Cousins of Blue Hill and Virginia Bunker of Ellsworth; and one brother-in-law, Rodney Saunders of Franklin.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at the Village Cemetery, Surry, with the Rev. Paul Comeau officiating. If friends desire, they may make contributions to the Hancock County Home Care, P.O. Box 156, Blue Hill 04614. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

Arlene B. Salsbury

OTIS - Arlene B. Salsbury, 75, died Oct. 27, 1999, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Sept. 26, 1924, in Aurora, the daughter of Elvin A. and Persis H. (Salisbury) Silsby.

She attended Brewer High School and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1942. She attended nurse’s training at Eastern Maine General Hospital until 1945. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Mariaville Grange, Otis-Mariaville Extension, Tri-Town Garden Club, Ebeemee Snowmobile Club and Otis Baptist Church. She was active with the swimming program at the YWCA in Bangor, gardening, snowmobiling, biking, walking and cross-country skiing. Arlene was a warm, giving and loving person, the first to help when needed, being strong for others.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Kenneth of Otis; two daughters, Sonia Houde and her husband, Bob, of Otis and Sharon Jankunas and her companion, Carl Mott, of Millinocket; a grandson, Justin Kittredge of Lewiston; a granddaughter; a brother, Ken Silsby and his wife, Nona, of Osborn; two aunts, Pauline Braley of Otis and Rose Giles of Town Hill; two step-grandchildren, Tonya Houde of South Portland and Kevin Houde and his wife, Meghan, of Hollis; many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Silsby, and a grandson, Joel Clark.

A service of remembrance was held Oct. 31, 1999, at Jordan Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with Pastor Clifford Caine officiating. The family suggests that friends who wish may make donations in Arlene’s memory to the Otis Baptist Church, c/o Pauline Braley, RR 4 Box 175, Ellsworth 04605.

Edna M. Gray

BLUE HILL - Edna M. Gray, 88, died Nov. 8, 1999, at a Blue Hill hospital. She was born Dec. 25, 1910, in Hermon, the daughter of Aaron and Annie (Wyman) Morrison.

She was a registered nurse and worked for the Blue Hill, Ellsworth and Castine hospitals, as well as Penobscot Nursing Home. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by one son, Russell Salisbury and his wife, Mitiko, of Woodside, Calif.; one daughter, Lynda Salsbury-Luft and her husband, Andrew, of Rensselaer, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Ryan, Vanessa, Sandra and Elizabeth.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Healey Funeral Home, South Street, Blue Hill.
