William H. Hills

EAST SULLIVAN - William H. Hills, 69, of East Sullivan, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Worcester, Mass., after a long illness.

William "Bill" Hills attended University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers University in New Jersey. He founded the Open Door Recovery Center located in Ellsworth. He spent the first 14 years working out of the basement of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He then relocated to a new building in Ellsworth Falls, thanks to local communities’ support. Open Door Recovery is a nonprofit organization helping recovering drug and alcohol dependent clients and families. Bill’s greatest love was sailing in his beloved Frenchman Bay and surrounding areas. He loved Maine, its way of life and above all, its people.

He leaves his loving wife of almost 46 years, Karin A. Hills; three daughters, Jacqueline Hills-Michaud of Northboro and her husband, Jonathan, Linda Mallaussena and her husband, Arthur, of East Sullivan and Christina Kief and her husband, Timothy, of Hancock. Survivors also include eight grandchildren, Ginger, Megan and Brooke Kief, Candace and Ryan Daley, and Kristen, Max and Paige Michaud. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Pollock of Gladstone, N.J. A daughter, Virginia Hills of Long Island, N.Y., died in 1975.

A memorial service was held at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, on Oct. 9, 1999, with reception after the service at Open Door Recovery Center on Russ Smith Road, Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Open Door Recovery Center, Russ Smith Road, Ellsworth 04605.

Erland E. Dority

MARIAVILLE - Erland E. Dority, 87, died Oct. 13, 1999, at his home after a brief illness. He was the son of Fred L. and Helen (Hanscom) Dority. He was born July 14, 1912, in Mariaville and remained a resident until his death.

In his early years he did carpentry work, raising string beans part-time to make ends meet. He later became a part-owner and was the operator of the Ellsworth Milling and Planing Co. for almost a quarter of a century before his retirement in 1973. Erland belonged to the Ellsworth Falls Congregational Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher for several years. He was also a member of Mariaville Grange No. 441.

He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Verna; one infant son, Vernon; two sisters and a brother. Erland is survived by a son, Ronald Dority and his wife, Mary, of Mariaville; three grandsons, Dr. Kenneth Dority, his wife, Mini, and daughter, London, who live in Dallas, Texas, Michael Dority and his wife, Muriel, and their children, Paul and Evelyn, who live in Ohio, and Allan Dority, who lives in South Carolina; a daughter, Cynthia O'Neil of Bar Harbor; a brother, Arthur Dority of Ellsworth; two sisters, Mathel Bell of Otis and Agnes Macey of Concord, N.H.; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Oct. 16, 1999, at Pyle Cemetery, Mariaville, with the Rev. Patricia Butler officiating. Contributions may be made to the Union Congregational Church of Ellsworth Falls, P.O. Box 997, Ellsworth; to Mariaville Grange No. 441, care of Reta Dunn, P.O. Jessie B. "Nan" Daley

SULLIVAN - Jessie B. "Nan" Daley, 92, died Oct. 25, 1999, at her residence. She was born Nov. 21, 1906, in East Sullivan, the daughter of Andrew and Vivian (Hanna) Havey.

She was a member of the North Sullivan Methodist Church and the Women’s Club. She enjoyed traveling and cooking.

She is survived by three sons, Gerald and his wife, Martha Daley, of Ft. Myers, Fla., Raymond and his wife, Eleanor Daley, of Sullivan and Robert and his wife, Tong Su Havey, of Sullivan; a sister, Lefa Bunker of Sullivan; special friends, Cecil Jr. and Joan Havey of Sullivan; 11 grandchildren, Richard, Robert, Debra, Christopher, Gary, John, Shelly, Wendy, Elliott, Raymond and Debra; 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by an infant son; her husband, John T. Daley; a daughter, Charlene and her husband, Richard Zerrien; four sisters, Phyllis Watts, Florice Briggs, Effie Jones, Emeline Richardson; two brothers, Alden and Melvis Havey; and also her longtime companion, Cecil Havey Sr.

Friends are invited to call 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Jordan Funeral Home, Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, with the Rev. Stephen Loan officiating. Interment will be at Gordon Cemetery, Sullivan. Contributions may be made in Nan’s memory to the North Sullivan Methodist Church, Sullivan, 04664.

Martha Brieger

PROSPECT HARBOR - Martha Brieger, 73, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor.

She was born in Rockville Center, N.Y., the daughter of Johannas and Ida (Kouw) Alexander, on July 20, 1926, and attended Mepham High School in New York. She trained at Brooklyn State for nursing and later received her bachelor’s degree from State University of New York at Oneonta. Martha was a nurse teacher at Bay Shore High School, Long Island, N.Y.

She was active in the Ellsworth Unitarian Universalist Church, and a member of the New York State United Teachers Association. Martha enjoyed gardening, quilting and traveling.

Martha was married to and survived by Arthur Brieger, her beloved husband of 35 years. They were married in 1964 in Williamsburg, Va. Also surviving are her sons, Eric Scarpinato and his wife, Lynn, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Paul Scarpinato and his wife, Joyce, of Saranac Lake, N.Y.; daughter, Jan Smith and her husband, Bill, of Concord, N.H.; grandchildren, Sandy and Erin Scarpinato of Florida and Gregory and Alexis Scarpinato of New York. She was predeceased by a brother, John Alexander.

A memorial service will be held at the Ellsworth Unitarian Universalist Church, 121 Bucksport Rd., on Oct. 23 at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Mark Worth officiating. Contributions may be made in Martha’s name to the Building Fund, Ellsworth Unitarian Universalist Church, Ellsworth, ME 04605. Arrangements are under the care of Pine State Cremation Service, Greenville Junction.

Margaret A. Dotts Telfer

ELLSWORTH - Margaret A. Dotts Telfer died Oct. 16, 1999, at Courtland Rehab and Living Center, Ellsworth. born in Corydon, Iowa, April 27, 1906, she attended a one-room school and graduated from Simpson College. Margaret was married to the Rev. Dr. Walter A. Telfer on June 13, 1933.

She is survived by three children, Paul A. and spouse, Polly Smith-Telfer, Pleasanton, Calif., Ellen Greenhalgh of Trenton, and Elizabeth and spouse, Rev. Joseph Palmer, of Trenton. Her eight grandchildren are Paul, Greg and Michelle Telfer, Dr. Beth Keefe, Jill McGowan, Lynn Angle, Meghan and Kirsten Palmer. Two great-grandchildren are Alex Keefe and Anna Maria Telfer.

Margaret was active in women's groups throughout the United Church of Christ in New England.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at First Congregational Church of Ellsworth, United Church of Christ, 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999. Fellowship hour to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your favorite charity.

Janis G. Wilson

SEDGWICK - Janis G. Wilson, 53, died peacefully at her residence surrounded by family and friends Oct. 23, 1999, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born at Blue Hill, Aug. 17, 1946, the daughter of Homer W. and Elise (Allen) Gray.

Janis was educated in the Brooklin school system and received her teaching degree from the University of Maine at Machias in 1968. She will be remembered by many as a special teacher at the Brooklin Elementary School where she taught for 23 years, retiring due to her illness in August of 1999. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Restoration Branch in Sunset. Janis loved wildlife and was especially fond of wolves. She was a member of the Defenders of Wildlife.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Gary N. Wilson; her father, Homer, both of Sedgwick; her son, Joel G. Wilson of Ellsworth; her daughter, Kelly E. Wilson of Sedgwick; her brother, George N. Gray of South Berwick; one aunt, Helaine A. Allen of Sedgwick; one uncle, Prin A. Allen of Brooklin; many nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, many friends and her students to whom she dedicated much of life. She will also be missed by her beloved dog, Lyle. She was predeceased by her mother, Elise, and an aunt, Elizabeth Allen.

A celebration of Janis’s life was held Oct. 26, 1999, at the Brooklin Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Lufkin and Elders Winfield Billings and Dowe Eaton officiating. Ann-Mari Andersson Gemmill

WASHINGTON, D.C. and FRANKLIN - Ann-Mari Andersson Gemmill, of Washington, D.C. and Franklin, died peacefully in her sleep on Oct. 11, 1999, at her residence in Thomas House, Washington, D.C. She had been a seasonal resident of Franklin since 1954. born in Stockholm, Sweden, April 3, 1913, she trained as a preschool teacher at the Socialpedagogiska Seminarict in Stockholm and came to the United States to work for the Swedish Legation and Friendship House in Washington, D.C.

In 1940, she married Henry Gemmill, a Wall Street Journal bureau chief and later editor of The National Observer. Mr. Gemmill died in 1994. After raising a family in Washington, Mrs. Gemmill returned to teaching. Ann-Mari Gemmill was a particularly fine quilter with a gentle, innovative and consistent hand; she also exercised traditional domestic arts with ease, and excellence. Her special affection was particularly reserved for children, the underprivileged and animals. Although she and her husband were often engaged in many years of great travel for both business and pleasure, Mrs. Gemmill’s deep unspoken love was for her house in Franklin and the beauty and peace of the surrounding corners and roads of Downeast Maine. Both she and her husband loved music and avidly attended the summer concerts in Hancock at the Monteux school.

Ann-Mari Gemmill is survived by her sister, Viola Ahlstrom, and brothers, Ragnar Sundstrom and Sven-Arvid Andersson, all of Sweden; three children, Elisabeth Izenour of Philadelphia, Pa., John Gemmill of Guilford, Conn., and Ann-Mari Gemmill of Takoma Park, Md.; five grandchildren, Ann-Kristin Izenour, Tessa Izenour, John Izenour, Blake Ratner and Juliana Ratner.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, 620 G Street SE, on Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at 3 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to So Others Might Eat, 710 O Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20001.

Lillian Sylvia Drasler Tapley

ELLSWORTH - Lillian Sylvia Drasler Tapley, 89, died Oct. 16, 1999, in Ellsworth. She was born July 19, 1910, in Durbin, W.Va., the daughter of Frank and Marie Becay Drasler.

She grew up in Borovnica, Slovenia (Yugoslavia), and later lived in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from the Florence Nightingale Nursing School in Chicago and worked as a nurse governess. Lillian was a lifelong gardener and enjoyed her needlepoint and many collections. She was active with the Girl Scouts and the American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth.

Lillian was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, Paul Dutton Tapley. She is survived by four daughters, Mary Tapley Turner of Ellsworth, Sylvia Tapley of Fairfield, Conn., Louise Tapley-VanPelt of Pleasant Hill, Calif., and Jean Tapley of Blue Hill. "Nana" was loved and will be missed by her grandchildren, Robert, Christopher, Gregory and wife, Martha, Michael and Wendy Turner, Susan and Benjamin VanPelt and Betsy VanPelt-Carens and husband, Tim, and daughter, Madeleine, Molly VanPelt and son, Alexander, and Peter VanPelt. Lillian is survived by a sister, Mildred Vucetic and family; a sister-in-law, Mae Drasler; many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Oct. 20, 1999, at Jordan Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with the Rev. James Wood officiating. Interment was at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 12, Ellsworth.

L. Blaine Lymburner

BROOKSVILLE - L. Blaine Lymburner, 80, died Oct. 19, 1999, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. He was born Jan. 7, 1919, in Brooksville, the son of Eugene Blaine and Mary (Lawrence) Lymburner.

He spent his working career as a chief mate with the Merchant Marines. He was a member of the Brooksville Masonic Lodge and was an avid ham radio operator.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Grace Patricia (Gross) Lymburner of Brooksville; one son, Richard and his wife, Laura Lymburner, of Brooksville; one daughter, Nancy J. and her husband, Dr. Ronald Stoller, of Gibsonia, Pa.; one brother, Francis "Gig" and his wife, Marilyn Lymburner, of Brooksville; two grandchildren, Sam and Abigail Stoller; two stepgrandchildren, Joshua and Amanda Smith; two nephews and a niece; and special friend, Bill, his dog.

A funeral service was held Oct. 22, 1999, at the North Brooksville Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dale True officiating. Interment was at Mt. Rest Cemetery, Brooksville. The family suggests that those who wish may make donations in Blaine’s name to the Brooksville Fire Department. Arrangements by Healey Funeral Home, South Street, Blue Hill.

Richard L. Jacobs

SWAMPSCOTT, MASS. - Richard L. Jacobs, age 51 years, of Swampscott, formerly of Key West, Fla., and Yarmouth and Portland, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at his home in Swampscott with his family at his side during a lengthy battle with melanoma cancer, for six months.

Born in Lynn, Mass., he lived in Swampscott most of his life. He lived in Key West, Fla., for seven years before returning to Swampscott recently. He had lived in Yarmouth and Portland for 15 years previously. Mr. Jacobs was a 1966 graduate of Swampscott High School where he played on the varsity football team. He was also a graduate of Salem State College, where he earned his bachelor's degree in business and finance, and his master's degree from Suffolk University, where he also studied business and finance. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War where he was first lieutenant and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with a Bronze Star, Bronze Star Medal, two Overseas Service Bars and a Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Mr. Jacobs was a real estate broker for Remax Paradise in Key West, Fla. He formerly was a real estate developer in Portland and was also a former Swampscott firefighter. He was a Hospice volunteer in Key West and enjoyed the ocean, mountains and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn (Johnston) Jacobs; two daughters, Rebecca Jacobs, age 25 of Wells, and Molly Jacobs, age 2 of Swampscott; three sons, Brian, age 22 of Wells, Chad, age 11 of Swampscott, and Luke, age 4 of Swampscott; his parents, Harold L. "Bud," retired Swampscott fire captain, and Janice (Webber) Jacobs; three brothers, Donald of Swampscott, Scott of Swampscott and Robert of Gardiner; and a sister, Beth Jacobs of Swampscott. He is the son-in-law of Lawrence and Carolyn Johnston of Trenton. He is also survived by his former wife, Betsy Farwell of Wells, and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lynn, 101 Forest Ave., Swampscott, on Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at 11 a.m. Burial in Swampscott Cemetery. Arrangements by Solimine, Landergan & Rhodes Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Route 129), Lynn, Mass.

Marion L. Overlock

BANGOR and ELLSWORTH - Marion L. Overlock, 97, wife of the late Everett Overlock, died Oct. 8, 1999, at an Ellsworth health-care center. She was born Sept. 19, 1902, in East Surry, the daughter of Elwin and Lillian (Clark) Lord.

Marion spent most of her working life in Bangor, where she was a bookkeeper for the Webber Motor Co., then for the Penobscot Savings Bank. After her retirement, she made several special audits for the bank.

She is survived by two nieces, Priscilla Dorvee of South Glens Falls, N.Y., and Thelma Dombkowski of Gorham; two nephews, H. Curtis Lord of Schenectady, N.Y., and Richard Lord of Troy, Mich.

A graveside service will be held at a later date. Gifts in her memory may be made to Birdsacre in Ellsworth or Rural Hall in East Surry. A service of Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor.

Inez Drawbridge Howard

GOULDSBORO - Inez Drawbridge Howard, 84, died at her residence, Oct. 12, 1999. She was born Nov. 12, 1914, in Holden, Mass., the daughter of George and Olive (Lowell) Drawbridge.

She grew up in Holden and attended the South Road School, Rice School, Holden High, Worcester State, Simmons College and the University of Chicago. She was a field service worker for the Red Cross during World War II in New Guinea, where she met her husband, John Howard.

She is survived by her younger brother, James Drawbridge; her children, Gail Howard, Bentley Howard and Robin H. Griffiths; grandchildren, Sebastian Griffiths, Bronwen Griffiths and Ivy Griffiths; great-grandchildren, Reuben Griffiths and Jonathan Lowell Griffiths. She will be missed by dear friends in Connecticut and Maine, including her lifelong friend, Peg Stone; nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, John Howard.

Leon Jacob Freedman

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Leon Jacob Freedman, 86, died Oct. 26, 1999, at an MDI health-care facility. He was born in Boston, March 4, 1913, the son of Samuel and Sadie Edith (Homer) Freedman.

Leon was a resident of Southwest Harbor for 35 years, where he was well-known as an antique dealer. Leon and his wife, Phyllis, owned and operated The Southwest Harbor Antique Gallery. He was a veteran of World War II, European Theater, 4th Army, and a member of the American Legion. He also was past master of Tremont Masonic Lodge No. 77, Southwest Harbor.

Leon was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis. He is survived by one nephew, Robert A. Freedman of Hyannis, Mass.; many special friends, including Jay Sutter and Joe Marshall, both of Southwest Harbor.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor, with Louis Rabineau officiating, followed by a Masonic service by the Tremont Masonic Lodge No. 77 of Southwest Harbor. It was Leon’s request that if friends desire, they may make contributions in his memory to Southwest Harbor/Tremont Ambulance Replacement Fund, Box 932, Southwest Harbor 04679 or the Tremont Masonic Lodge No. 77 Charity Fund, Box 144, Southwest Harbor 04679. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

J. Kenneth Sergeson

LONGMONT, COLO. - J. Kenneth Sergeson, 78, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Longmont Life Care Center. He was born in Pitman, N.J., Sept. 5, 1921, and graduated from Pitman High School and Temple University with a degree in business. He was a flight instructor in the Marine Corps and was stationed in Texas. He loved flying, fishing and football.

Upon his retirement as president of Pennsgrove National Bank, he and his wife moved to Ellsworth where he became active in the Downeast Outing Club and did volunteer work as a trail leader at Acadia National Park. They moved to Colorado in 1996 to be closer to their son.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Longmont, and son, Steve Sergeson of Boulder, Colo.

Cremation and a private service for the immediate family was held at Howe Mortuary, Longmont. Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice of Hancock County, 29 Union St., Ellsworth, ME 04605 or Friends of Acadia, P.O. Box 725, Bar Harbor, ME 04609.

Olga "Julie" Derby O’Connor

TRENTON - Olga "Julie" Derby O’Connor, 87, died Oct. 11, 1999, in Trenton. She was born Oct. 29, 1911, in Rye, N.Y., the daughter of Augustin and Olga C. Derby. For many years, Julie came to Bar Harbor summers to visit her grandmother’s estate on Derby Lane, and later she and her husband retired to Derby Lane, Oak Point, in Trenton.

Julie loved her dogs, classical music and she will be sadly missed by her special friend, Florence Leland of Trenton, and special friends and caregivers, Mildred "Mittie" Butler and Queenie Henderson of Trenton. Special little friends include Crystal and Andy Young of Wellfleet, Mass., Trisha Hamor of Deer Isle, Jonathon Hamor of Blue Hill and Ezera Sporford of Bangor.

Friends are invited to visit 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert. Friends who wish may make contributions in Julie’s memory to the Southwest Harbor SPCA, c/o Bess Gray, Box 434, Southwest Harbor 04679.

Ernest Harland "Harley" Young

TRENTON - Ernest Harland "Harley" Young died Oct. 18, 1999, at a Bar Harbor health-care facility after a short illness. He was born in Trenton, May 7, 1914, the sixth child of eight born to Ernest Leslie and Ethel Julia (Leland) Young.

He was predeceased by his loving wife and companion of 52 years, Elizabeth Althea (Hodgkins) in 1993. He was also the last survivor of his seven other brothers and sisters. Predeceasing him were Madeline, Dana, Franklin and Catherine (Carter), Morris and Rosa (Salisbury) (Mondruza) and Onalee. He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Damon and son-in-law, Dennis, of Trenton and by his three grandchildren, Erin of San Francisco, Calif., Sadie of Hyde Park, N.Y., and Doyle of Trenton; a special nephew, James Salisbury of Marlborough, Conn.

He was an avid sportsman. Harley enjoyed trapping, hunting and fishing. He loved the camaraderie of his hunting buddies and the feeling of nature's rhythm in his veins. A veteran of World War II, he fought in North Africa and Italy, where he earned the Purple Heart. After recovering from his battle wounds, he was discharged from the Army. Harley then built his house in Trenton and settled with his wife to raise his family. He learned the craft of plumbing and rose to the status of master while working for F.T. Brown Co. in Northeast Harbor, where he worked for 32 years.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at 11:30 a.m. at the Leland Cemetery, Trenton, with the Rev. Gary DeLong officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Trenton Scholarship, started in the memory of Harley's wife, Betty. Carroll Robert deGaribody

ROCHESTER, N.H. - Carroll Robert deGaribody, 63, of 145 Tibbetts Road, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, in Bangor after a sudden illness. born Oct. 24, 1936, in Bangor, he was the son of the late Russell and Marjorie (Doyle) deGaribody.

Mr. deGaribody had lived in Rochester since 1981 after moving from Dover. He retired from the Merchant Marines as a barge captain. He also worked as a real estate broker. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 7 in Rochester, Rochester Elks Lodge 1340, he was the vice chairman for the Sky Haven Operating Commission, former zoning board member in Rochester and a member of the Penobscot Conservation Club. He had a love for flying his airplane.

Members of his family include his wife of 14 years, Tracy (Reed) deGaribody of Rochester; a stepdaughter, Sarah E. Sleeper of Rochester; his brothers, William Carpenter of Old Town, Charles Carpenter and his wife, Madeline, of Bangor, John deGaribody and his wife, Marie, of Old Town; his sisters, Charlene Keough and her husband, John, of Waltham, Mass., and Lynn Green of Upton, Mass.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Cecil Paul Carpenter, and a sister, Rebecca Parrella.

A funeral service was held Oct. 26, 1999, in the First Church Congregational, South Main Street, Rochester, with the Revs. David Pearson and Sharon Tinkham as officiants. Burial was in the Evergreen cemetery in Newbury, Mass. Arrangements by R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, N.H.
