Winifred A. "Winnie" Beer

ELLSWORTH - Winifred A. "Winnie" Beer, 90, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at her daughter's home in Ellsworth. She was born in Brockton, Mass., March 23, 1909.

Winnie was a retired nurse, devoted and loving wife to her husband, James, who predeceased her, mother and grandmother. She will be remembered for her spunkiness and the sparkle in her eye. She was a caring and tender person. Winnie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellsworth.

She is survived by her daughter, Winnie Pink; her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Nell Beer, all of Ellsworth; her grandchildren, Winnie Wynne of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., James Beer and his wife, Patty, of Portland, Robert Pink of Charleston, S.C., and Vivian Beer of Ellsworth. She was touched by all who knew her, and will be missed.

A memorial service was held Oct. 4, 1999, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Michaud presider.

Vernon G. Jordan

AURORA - Vernon G. Jordan, 62, husband of Brenda M. (Strout) Jordan, died Oct. 14, 1999, at his home in Aurora. He was born in Brewer, Dec. 19, 1936, the son of Vernon J. and Annie M. (McKenna) Jordan.

Vernon attended schools in Brewer and Aurora and graduated from John Bapst High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army. Vernon was a dedicated employee for 21 years for the Maine Department of Transportation in Aurora. He was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping with his wife at Jo-Mary Lake in Millinocket for many years.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Aurora are four children, Dana L. Jordan and his wife, Pam, of Amherst, Ellen Alexander and her husband, Victor, of Mariaville, Earle S. Young Jr. and his wife, Jaime, of Irvington, Al., Timothy S. Young and his wife, Marcia, of Bangor; nine grandchildren; one sister, Betsey Varney and her husband, David, of Aurora; one sister-in-law, Sharon Smith and her husband, Jeffrey, of Harrington; three nephews, one niece, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 18, 1999, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Brewer, with the Rev. Joel Cyr, pastor, celebrant. Burial was at the Aurora-Osborne Cemetery, Aurora. For those who wish, contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements by Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer.

Robert E. Blum

SALISBURY, CONN. - Robert E. Blum, 100, of Salisbury, Conn., and a summer resident of Mount Desert from 1936 to 1996, died Oct. 22, 1999, at Salisbury.

A civic leader and businessman, Blum was an early trustee of the College of the Atlantic. In 1992 the college awarded Blum an honorary BA in human ecology. Blum also was a founding director of the Maine Community Foundation based here in Ellsworth.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Blum graduated from Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn., and from Yale University in 1921.

Active in the development of Lincoln Center, Blum served as treasurer from 1956 to 1963. He was appointed to the New York City Art Commission in 1960, and later served as president. He was a trustee of the American Museum of Natural History and a trustee of the New York Zoological Society.

In his native borough, Blum was president of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences from 1951 to 1960, governing committee chair of the Brooklyn Museum from 1960 to 1969 and served for many years on the governing committees of the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, the Brooklyn Public Library and numerous other organizations.

He is survived by two children, John R.H. Blum and Alice E.B. Yoakum, both of Lakeville, Conn., nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Ethel Halsey Blum, in 1991.

Robert Eddy Suminsby,

NORTHEAST HARBOR - Robert Eddy Suminsby, 67, died peacefully at his home in Northeast Harbor, Oct. 2, 1999, after a brief illness. He was born in Otter Creek, Sept. 14, 1932, to Howell K. and Virgie Eddy Suminsby. He married Kathryn Knowles on Nov. 15, 1957.

He was graduated from Gilman High School in Northeast Harbor in 1950, and from the University of Maine in 1958.

He joined The Knowles Company in 1958, first working in the appraisal field and later as a real estate broker. Twelve years later he headed up the appraisal business, and in 1972 he and Kathryn purchased The Knowles Company. His integrity and professionalism earned him the respect of his clients and colleagues. He continued to work as a Realtor and appraiser until the sale of the business in 1994.

Active in community affairs, he chaired the MDI School Board for many years, was a trustee of the College of the Atlantic, moderated town meetings, served for the past five years as selectman for Town of Mount Desert, and contributed his time, wisdom, and customary humor to many other civic organizations.

He loved the Maine woods and waters, and was deeply committed to conservation issues. He was appointed to the first Land for Maine's Future board, where he served for 10 years, and was a longtime friend and advisor of the Maine Coast Heritage Trust and The Nature Conservancy. He passed on his appreciation for the great outdoors in a more personal way through his long service as a Scoutmaster, for which he was recognized with the Silver Beaver award.

During his retirement he devoted much time to his interest in genealogy, including extensive research on the early settlers of Mount Desert Island.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his children, Bethany Suminsby Reynolds and husband, William, of Ellsworth, Robert Eddy Suminsby Jr., Lt. Col., USAF and wife, Celeste, and Jerome Howell Suminsby of Northeast Harbor; his brother, John Suminsby of Wenham, Mass., and his sister, Harriet Petraitis of Canton Center, Conn.; grandsons, Samuel, Robert III, and Benjamin; and his special canine friend, Emmett.

A funeral service was held Oct. 5, 1999, at St. Mary's by the Sea in Northeast Harbor, with the Rev. Charlene Alling officiating. In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial contributions to College of the Atlantic, 105 Eden St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609-1198; Maine Coast Heritage Trust, P.O. Box 426, Northeast Harbor, ME 04662; or The Nature Conservancy, Maine Chapter, 14 Maine St., Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

Lester H. Jordan

ELLSWORTH - Lester H. Jordan, 93, husband of the late Martha P. Jordan, passed away Oct. 19, 1999, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born Sept. 24, 1906, in Waltham, the son of Alice (Jordan) and Howard Jordan.

He was educated in the Waltham and Ellsworth school systems and graduated from Maine School of Commerce (Husson), Bangor. He was part owner of Jordan & Beal Grocery Store at Ellsworth Falls for many years. He was chief deputy sheriff of Hancock County for 14 years and worked for Raymond Sargent Construction as crew supervisor. He worked at the state garage in the Ellsworth area for 18 years, retiring from the state in 1968. He moved to his farm in Waltham, where he did carpentry work for a number of years.

He was a life member of the Ellsworth Lygonia Masonic Lodge No. 40 AM & FM in Ellsworth and the Maine State Employee Association. He managed and played with two semi-pro baseball teams in the 1930 and 40s, The Waltham AA and Nicolin Wolves. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors, working on his farm, and especially looked forward to the annual hunting trips in Township 35 with the group known as the "35 Club." He will be remembered by many for his reminiscing and exuberant stories of his life experiences as only he could tell them.

He is survived by a son, Paul Jordan and his wife, Verna, of Waltham; a grandson, Peter Jordan of Waltham; a granddaughter, Darlene Kaspala and husband, Thomas, of Surry; one great-granddaughter, Phyllicia Jordan; five great-grandsons, Ridge and Matthew Jordan, Anthony and Adam Jordan, and Thomas Kaspala III; a nephew, Stanley Jordan, and a niece, Barbara Groton, both of Cape Elizabeth; cousins, Olinda and Alden Griffin of Old Town; close friend, Robert McKinny and his wife, Mary Lou, of Old Town. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 67 years; a brother, Lloyd Jordan; and a great-grandson, Keith Jordan.

Visiting hours will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at the Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at the funeral home with Elder Richard Carlson officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Waltham, following the service. Those who wish may contribute in Lester's memory to the Lygonia Masonic Lodge AF & AM, c/o Richard Cassey, secretary, RR 1 Box 1938, Bar Harbor, ME 04609.

Phyllis M. Beal

ELLSWORTH - Phyllis M. Beal, 79, wife of the late Paul Beal, died Oct. 3, 1999, at a Bangor hospital. She was born March 16, 1920, the daughter of Frank and Letha (Carter) Seavey Sr. of Bernard.

She is survived by four daughters, Carolyn Kay Wesley of Browns Mills, N.J., Maralyn May and her husband, Wesley Stevens, of Ellsworth, Sylvia and her husband, Delmar Watts Jr., of Surry, Annette and her husband, Kenneth Smith, of Surry; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Olive and her husband, Chandler Kelley Sr.; one brother, Wendall Seavey and his wife, Ann; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Phyllis was predeceased by a grandson, Paul Wesley; a sister, Barbara; two brothers, Wilbur and Frank Jr.

A funeral service was held Oct. 6, 1999, at Jordan Funeral Home, Ellsworth. Burial was at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. Friends may make gifts in her memory to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 346, Augusta 04332-0346.

Robert "Bob" Rouse

ELLSWORTH and CINCINNATI, OHIO - Robert "Bob" Rouse, 68, died at an Ellsworth hospital, Oct. 8, 1999, after a brief illness. He was born April 4, 1931, at Cincinnati, the son of the late Clifford S. and Ada (Rolfe) Rouse.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 39 years, Eleanor (Curtis) Rouse, in 1992; a brother, Stanley Rouse, in 1990 and a sister, Claudette Clements, in 1993. He is survived by his sister, Lucille "Connie" Hayes of Mason, Ohio; a very special niece, Linda Leighton of Harrington; a very special friend, Marjorie Hamblen of South Gardiner; and several nieces and nephews.

He served 20 years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, retiring in 1971. He was employed as a bookkeeper for Brown Appliance & TV Inc. of Ellsworth from its opening in 1976 until his retirement in 1993. He was a member and past master of the Tuscan Masonic Lodge No. 106 of Addison.

A funeral service was held Oct. 11, 1999, at the Faith United Methodist Church, Harrington, with the Rev. James Wood officiating. Interment was at Forest Hill cemetery in Harrington. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 346, Augusta 04332-0346. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Harrington.

Madge E. Veinot

ELLSWORTH - Madge E. Veinot, 81, died Oct. 18, 1999, at an Ellsworth health-care facility. She was born Oct. 6, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in Lynn, Mass.

She graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1936 and Burdett College in 1938 and worked for General Electric Co. before moving to Ellsworth in 1966. Madge worked at Ellsworth City Hall as deputy city clerk, 1968-1974, and at the Department of Human Services, 1974-1980.

She leaves three daughters and one son, Candace Nadeau, Jyl Katsiaficas, Jon Veinot and Jan Veinot; seven grandchildren, Christopher and Shawn Nadeau, Seth Payer, Courtney Katsiaficas, Lance Calender, Demetrios Katsiaficas and Kameron Veinot; one great-grandchild, Cole Nadeau. She was married to John Kitchiner Veinot from 1943 until his death in 1995.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. Leo James Michaud officiating.

Frank H. Osborne

FRANKLIN - Frank H. Osborne, 73, died at his home in Franklin, Sept. 30, 1999. He was born at Norwell, Mass., June 22, 1926, the son of Frank and Cora (Munnis) Osborne.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 109 of Ellsworth.

He is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Lindblom of Quincy, Mass., and Susan Anderson of Scituate, Mass.; two sons, Robert of Garland, Texas, and Richard of Plymouth, Mass.; one sister, Mrs. David (Marion) Love of San Antonio, Texas; and six grandchildren.

At his request there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Sanford "Dick" L. Lunt

FRENCHBORO, LONG ISLAND - Sanford "Dick" L. Lunt, 89, died Oct. 18, 1999, at MDI Hospital. He was born May 30, 1910, in Frenchboro, "Long Island," the son of John R. and Flora E. (Lunt) Lunt Sr.

Dick, a loving, caring father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, built his own lobster boat in 1938. His boat was named the David & Vivian, in which he lobstered, haked and caught herring around Frenchboro. He started Lunt & Lunt Lobster Co. in 1951, which is still in operation.

Dick was active in town government and was instrumental in bringing the State Ferry Service, as well as electricity to Frenchboro. He also was a member of the Frenchboro Congregational Church.

Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Vivian (Davis) Lunt; one son, David L. Lunt and his wife, Sandra; one brother, John Lunt Jr. and his wife, Rebecca, all of Frenchboro; three sisters, Mable Hall of Westbrook, Catherine Poor of Vinalhaven, and Pauline Perry of New York; three grandchildren, David W. Lunt and his wife, Debra, Daniel Lunt and his wife, Tina, and Dean Lunt and his wife, Michelle, all of Frenchboro; seven great-grandchildren, Travis, Zachary, Kristin, Nathaniel and Joseph Lunt, all of Frenchboro, Emily and Eliza Lunt of Yarmouth; two foster children, Anthony Brown and Kevin Holland; two sisters-in-law, Elsie and Lillian Lunt of Southwest Harbor; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at the Lunt Cemetery, Frenchboro, with the Rev. James Miller officiating. The Sunbeam will be leaving Northeast Harbor 9 a.m. Friday for Frenchboro. Contributions in Dick's memory may be made to the Frenchboro Congregational Church, c/o Sarah Lenfestey or to the Frenchboro Historical Society, c/o Donna Hasal, Frenchboro, ME 04635. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

Mary Parker Michel

FRANKLIN - Mary Parker Michel, 89, died Oct. 4, 1999, at her home in Franklin. She was born Feb. 17, 1910, in Baltimore, Md., the oldest child of Lindley E. and Anna Taylor Parker.

She graduated from Goucher College in Baltimore and later worked as a biological technician and a teacher. Mary was a member of Homewood Friends Meeting in Baltimore. After her marriage to Harry Michel in 1942, their home was in Towson, Md. Following his retirement they moved to Massachusetts to be near their son, Anthony Michel, and later to Franklin to live with their daughter, Susanne Grosjean, and her family.

Mary was a distinguished horticulturist and collected exotic plants for her personal gardens as well as for nature centers in Baltimore and Boston. She and her husband were avid travelers, familiar with mountain trails and back roads throughout this country and Europe. Mary was also an enthusiastic reader and art historian. Her many interests have greatly enriched the lives of her family and friends. Her sense of humor and her spirit during her last difficult years have been an inspiration.

Mary was predeceased by a son, Charles; one sister and one brother. She is survived by her husband, Harry; a daughter, Susanne Grosjean of Franklin; a son, Anthony Michel of Lexington, Mass.; four grandchildren, three sisters and one brother. She had 14 nieces and nephews.

Burial of the ashes will be at a later date in the family cemetery in Pennsdale, Pa. Contributions in her memory may be made to the New England Wild Flower Society, 180 Hemenway Rd., Framingham, MA 01701-2699 or Ellsworth Respite Center, P.O. Box 5288, Ellsworth, ME 04605.

Alfreda "Freda" Laffin

SANTA CRUZ, CALIF. - Alfreda "Freda" Laffin, died at Community Hospital of Monterey on Oct. 11, 1999, following a battle with cancer. born in Palmyra, she was 75.

Mrs. Laffin was a resident of the Santa Cruz area since 1968. She served in the Women's Army Corps. She was very active in various volunteer activities including the Red Cross, as well as Boy Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts, where she served as den mother, day camp counselor and Girl Scout Council president.

A talented seamstress, she operated her own business in her home for 10 years, custom designing garments for women, tailor-made men's wear and alterations. She also was involved in teaching confraternity classes at Good Shepherd School and taught sewing in the seventh and eighth grade classes, and acted as teacher's aide for many schools.

She worked for Sprouse-Ritz Fabrics for five years and liked to garden, and also enjoyed knitting, tennis, bicycling, badminton, and indoor roller skating. Perhaps her proudest accomplishment was her completion of child development classes which she took at Cabrillo College, maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

She is survived by her two daughters, Anna Smith of Seaside, Calif., and Mary Oliphant of Boulder Creek, Calif. One of 14 children, 10 preceded her death, but she is also survived by her brothers, Wilfrid DeRaps and Ernest DeRaps, both of Maine, and Amos DeRaps of Texas. She also leaves five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Laffin, in 1984 and her son, Francis Philip Laffin, in 1981.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Villa Maria Del Mar in Santa Cruz on Oct. 15, 1999. Burial followed the Mass at the Holy Cross cemetery in Santa Cruz, where she was laid to rest next to her son and husband. Arrangements by Norman's Family Chapel, 3620 Soquel Dr., Soquel, Calif.

Evelyn F. Chase

COREA - Evelyn F. Chase, 83, widow of John A. Chase Jr., died at Deering, N.H., Aug. 30, 1999. She was born in Newburyport, Mass., Jan. 25, 1916, the daughter of Ellen F. (Whitcomb) and Charles M. Craton.

She attended Hillsboro (N.H.) High School and graduated cum laude from the University of New Hampshire in 1936. Most of her life was spent in Orono and Framingham, Mass. She and her husband moved back to Maine in 1971 and settled in Corea. She was a member of the Prospect Harbor United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one son, John C. Chase of San Francisco, Calif.; a special niece, Joyce Bumford, and several other nieces and nephews.

There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to the Prospect Harbor United Methodist Church, Prospect Harbor 04607. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Milbridge.

Malcolm "Friday" Edgecomb

MARIAVILLE - Malcolm "Friday" Edgecomb, 60, died Sept. 2, 1999, at an Ellsworth hospital, after a courageous battle against kidney cancer. He was the son of Roland A. Edgecomb and Phyllis (Frost) Edgecomb Spencer. Malcolm was born in Mariaville, Nov. 29, 1938, where he remained a lifelong-resident.

He was a graduate of Ellsworth High School, Class of 1957. Malcolm owned and operated M.F. Edgecomb, Inc., a logging and pulpwood business, until his death. He belonged to the American Pulpwood Association, Northeastern Loggers Association and Maine Motor Transport Association. Fraternally, he was a member of Lygonia Lodge No. 40 AF & AM, Acadia Chapter No. 31, Blanquefort Commandery No. 13, Anah Temple Shrine and was a charter member and director of the Anah Temple Go Karts Unit. He was a member of Mariaville Grange No. 441.

Malcolm is survived by his wife of 39 years, Margaret (Stevenson) Edgecomb of Mariaville; three sons, Roland, Ross and Ralph, all of Mariaville; two daughters, Mary Ellen Tucker of South Thomaston and Annie Perry of Gouldsboro; two brothers, Arthur Edgecomb of Ellsworth and Gerald Edgecomb of Mariaville; two sisters, Sally Haslam of Eastbrook and Lisa Colbeth of Mariaville. He had 14 grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, aunts and many cousins. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Rose Mary Edgecomb.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with Pastor Scott Conners officiating. Contributions in Malcolm’s memory may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, care of Anah Temple, P.O. Box 735, Bangor 04402-0735; St. Joseph Catholic Church Capital Campaign Fund, 231 Main St., Ellsworth 04605; or to the charity of one’s choice.
