Marguerite K. Parker

ELLSWORTH - Marguerite K. Parker, 105, died Sept. 9, 1999, at an Ellsworth health-care facility.

She was born Nov. 5, 1893, in Ellsworth Falls, the daughter of Ralph and Alice (White) Kincaid.

She was a member of the United Baptist Church of Ellsworth, where she was a member of the Ladies Aid.

Marguerite retired from the Union Trust Co. after working there 17 years.

She is survived by a son, Harold Parker and his wife, Marie, of Ellsworth; one daughter, Mary Sadler and her husband, Arthur, of Annapolis, Md.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Russell Parker, in 1947 and a sister, Eleanor K. Moore, in 1993.

A graveside service was held Sept. 13, 1999, at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth, with the Rev. John Dunn officiating.

Friends who wish may make gifts in Marguerite’s memory to the Activity Department at Collier’s Healthcare Center, 33 Birch Ave., Ellsworth 04605.

Louise S. Chase

MOUNTAIN HOME, IDAHO - Louise S. Chase, 83, of Mountain Home, Idaho, passed away Sept. 24, 1999, at the Elmore Medical Center Nursing Home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Summers Funeral Homes, McMurtrey Chapel.

Louise was born Jan. 1, 1916, in Trenton, to Ellen and Ross Mitchell Sr. Louise married Lynn Merle Scott in 1936 in Ellsworth.

They had one daughter, Merlynda.

Louise led a very active life, always putting others ahead of herself.

She worked for more than 50 years at many different positions.

Three years after her husband’s death in 1968, she was remarried to Lowell Chase of Southwest Harbor in 1971.

Shortly after Lowell’s retirement from the restaurant business, Louise and Lowell moved to Mountain Home, Idaho, in 1991 to be close to Louise’s family.

Four months after they moved to Mountain Home, Lowell died.

Louise then put her whole life into her family.

Louise is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Merlynda and Art Hoult of Bruneau, Idaho; a grandson and wife, Donnie and Gina LaBelle of Mountain Home; and a granddaughter and husband, Bonnie and Tim Swenson of Boise, Idaho; also four great-grandchildren, Bailey LaBelle and Keven, Patrick and Kaitlynn Swenson; a brother and wife, Robert and Ruth Mitchell of Marietta, Ga.; one niece of Georgia, one niece of South Carolina, one nephew of Massachusetts and one niece, one nephew and sister-in-law of Maine.

Louise was preceded in death by her father, mother and three brothers.

Frederick W. Morley

LAMOINE - Frederick W. Morley of Lamoine, age 84, died at home Aug. 16, 1999, of Alzheimer’s.

He was born in Pinetta (Glouster), Va., in 1914, and lived in Elgin, Ill., until 1973 when he retired to Florida. He moved to Maine in 1994.

Fred worked at the Elgin Watch Co., owned and operated Morley’s Sundries from 1953-1956, and was manager of the Owl’s Athletic Club for 15 years.

He was president of the Elgin United Civics Organization from 1969-1970 and co-chairman of the Labor Day Centennial Parade in 1975.

He was associated with the Elgin Elks Club and the Elgin Riverside Club.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Trudy Lindenmann of Lamoine; his son, Robert of Gainesville, Fla.; his son, Douglas and daughter-in-law, Terry, of Lamoine; his granddaughters, Martina of Lamoine and Amy of Atlanta, Ga.; his brother, John of Elgin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Caroline and Arthur; sisters, Virginia Ridinger, Rosemary Whitmer, and Mary Mullen; and brothers, Tom and Francis.

Fred was a very kind, loving, and funny person and will be missed very much.

Private services were held at his home for relatives and friends with the Rev. Mark Worth of the Unitarian Universalist Church.

Janet Gregory Whitehead

DENVILLE, N.J. and PROSPECT HARBOR - Janet Gregory Whitehead, 70, died at a Bangor hospital, Sept. 8, 1999, after a brief illness.

She was born Jan. 10, 1929, at Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Louis and Mildred (Upson) Gregory.

Janet was a longtime summer resident who had visited Prospect Harbor since 1956.

She worked as a psychiatric nurse at St. Clares Riverside Hospital in Boonton Township, N.J., for 20 years.

She is survived by her companion of 23 years, Tom Duddy of Denville, N.J.; one daughter, Lynn Whitehead Lehnert and her husband, Bill, of Unicoi, Tenn.; one son, Gregory Whitehead and his wife, Donita, of Gouldsboro Point; two granddaughters, McKenzie Lynn and Jordan Victoria, both of Gouldsboro Point; one brother, Warren Gregory and his wife, Allison, of Medford Lakes, N.J.; several nieces and nephews.

A service of remembrance was held Sept. 13, 1999, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Milbridge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorcas Library, Prospect Harbor 04607.

Julia D. Davis

BUCKSPORT - Julia D. Davis, 84, died Sept. 25, 1999, at a Bangor nursing home.

She was born Dec. 1, 1914, in Franklin, the daughter of Dana and Marion (Bragdon) Dyer.

She owned and operated the Helm Restaurant in Camden/ Rockport with her husband for 20 years.

She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star in Rockport.

She enjoyed her family. Julia was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles and her doll collection.

She is survived by one daughter, Helen and her husband, Wayne Redman, of Verona; four grandchildren, Gary Redman, Cleo and her husband, Tim Sheehan, and Lori and her husband, Donald Rumney, all of Bucksport, and David and his wife, Lynn Redman, of East Orland; seven great-grandchildren, Wava and Nikki Sheehan, Isaac and Shelby Redman, and Daniel, Bruce and Julia Rumney; three sisters, Lola Abbott and her husband, Kenneth, of Bar Harbor, Cleo Dyer and Wava Ruckel, both of Florida; two brothers, Dana Dyer and Robert Dyer and his wife, Olive, all of Connecticut; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, S. Vincent Davis, April 7, 1993.

A funeral service was held Sept. 29, 1999, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 14 Elm St., Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating.

Interment was in Bay View Cemetery, Franklin.

Edna Margery Walls Megquier

BANGOR and BAR HARBOR - Edna Margery Walls Megquier, 85, of Bangor and Bar Harbor, died at a Bangor hospital, Aug. 9, 1999, after a brief stay.

Born in Bar Harbor, Aug. 31, 1913, she was the daughter of Ralph A. and Marion S. Walls.

She was a member and communicant of St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church of Bar Harbor.

Edna had been a resident of Laurel Court-Ross Manor Health Facility in Bangor since November 1996.

She was a former owner-manager of the Highbrook Motel in Bar Harbor, along with her late husband of 47 years, Olney L. Megquier.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Frances (Lawson) Mitchell of Bangor and Branch Pond, Ellsworth; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine (Mitchell) and Alfred Washburn of Beverly, Mass., Jacqueline (Mitchell) and Ronald Hanf of Linville, N.C.; a sister, Pauline Walls Savage of Falmouth; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

A service of the celebration of her life and death was held at McFarland Funeral Home, Bar Harbor, Aug. 12, 1999, with the Rev. Dr. E.A. Garrett III officiating.

Burial was in Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor.

Those who wish may donate in her memory to the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate Inc., P.O. Box 346, Augusta, ME 04332-0346; or to St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church, Mount Desert Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609.

Edward P. Varisco

STONINGTON - Edward P. Varisco, 61, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at a Bangor hospital.

He was born in Stonington, May 7, 1938, the son of Arthur P. and June E. (Snowden) Varisco.

Edward was a graduate of Stonington High School, Class of 1957, of which he was president.

After graduation, he was a lobster fisherman.

He attended Lowell College in Lowell, Mass., where he worked for Raytheon Co. in the Aerospace Division.

On Nov. 22, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Hazel Ann Wakefield.

He was blessed with three children and enjoyed being a father.

"Ed" was well-known and respected in the electrical field, having had a 32-year career as a sales representative for Standard Electric Co.

He is survived by his loving wife, Hazel "Tootie" of Stonington; his daughter, Susan Siebert and her husband, Terry, of Deer Isle; his son, Stuart and his companion, Lori, and Lori’s children, Justin and Kyla, all of Stonington; his very special granddaughters, Hannah Megan Siebert and Stephanie Elizabeth Siebert; a brother, Bruce and his wife, Gwen, of Port Charlotte, Fla.; nieces, Debbie Bubar and Tonya Teixeira; a nephew and godchild, Christopher Varisco, and a godchild, Scott Marshall; and many cousins.

He will also be missed by his pets, Nanette the Dog, and Phil and Lil, his kittens.

Edward was predeceased by his firstborn son, Steven E. Varisco.

A funeral service was held Sept. 26, 1999, at the Stonington Branch of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with elders Elwell Shepard and Larry Varisco officiating.

Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery, Oceanville.

Fredonna Gladys (Reynolds) (Bunker) Hodgkins

HULLS COVE - Fredonna Gladys (Reynolds) (Bunker) Hodgkins, 80, died Sept. 9, 1999, at her residence, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Sept. 27, 1918, in Ellsworth Falls, the fourth child of Archibald and Althea (Murch) Reynolds.

At an early age, she was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Grover and Sadie (Gardner) (Reynolds) Bunker of Bar Harbor.

Our mom was raised in Bar Harbor, graduating from Bar Harbor High School.

Mom’s love of reading followed her through the years with extensive knowledge of nature, cooking, arts and crafts, medicine and religion.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Order of the Rebekahs.

Mom was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Robert F. Hodgkins, in 1979.

She was also predeceased by her brothers, Fred and David Reynolds; her very close friend and sister, Olive (Reynolds) Modeen.

She leaves six children, Geraldine Ann Linscott of Otter Creek, Luere Deasy Glover of Xenia, Ohio, Mary Bunker Banfield of Bangor, Robert Francis Hodgkins of Surry, Katherine Whit McMullen of Mattapoisett, Mass., and Rebecca Handy Jordan of Franklin; 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom will remember her fondly.

A candlelight service was held Sept. 11, 1999, at the Church of Our Father, Hulls Cove.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund, Church of Our Father, Hulls Cove, ME 04644.

Hazel Lillian Hall

BLUE HILL - Hazel Lillian Hall, 99, died Sept. 26, 1999, at a Blue Hill hospital.

She was born Oct. 5, 1899, in Harrington, the daughter of George Daniel and Evie (Watson) Farnsworth.

After high school, Hazel went to Normal School.

Upon graduation she taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Orland.

She met her husband, Harold G. Hall of Bath, while he was attending the University of Maine at Orono.

After they married, they moved to Missouri for several years.

Then they moved to Yonkers, N.Y., where their son was born.

Hazel became very active at his school and with his extracurricular activities.

In 1960, she and her husband moved to Blue Hill.

She was a very active member of the First Congregational Church of Blue Hill and a life member and Past District Deputy (1966) of the Eastern Star.

She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary, Halcyon Grange and Blue Hill Garden Club.

Hazel is survived by her son, Harold G. Hall Jr. of Blue Hill; a brother, C.D. "Pat" Farnsworth of Orono; three grandchildren, Elizabeth L. Hall of Dana Pt., Calif., John F. Hall of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and James T. Hall of Thorton, Colo.; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold G. Hall Sr.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at the First Congregational Church of Blue Hill, with the Rev. Rob McCall officiating.

The family suggests that those who desire may make contributions in Hazel’s memory to the First Congregational Church of Blue Hill, P.O. Box 44, Blue Hill 04614 or the Order of Eastern Star No. 107, P.O. Box 55, Penobscot 04476. Arrangements by Healey Funeral Home, South Street, Blue Hill.

Quinby DeHart Gurnee, M.D.

RANCHO SANTA FE, CALIF. - Quinby DeHart Gurnee, M.D., surgeon, died in Southern California on Sept. 26, 1999. He was 88.

Dr. Gurnee was born in 1911 in Hawthorne, N.J., and had a private practice as a general surgeon in that town until he moved to Winter Harbor in 1976.

Although retired from private practice, he remained affiliated with Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth.

He completed his undergraduate studies and graduated from the medical school at the University of Michigan, where he also met his wife, the former Ione Hunt, with whom he was married 60 years until her death in 1996.

He served his residency and internship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City.

Dr. Gurnee was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Gurnee was an orthopedic surgeon with the 93rd evacuation hospital during World War II where he received a purple heart and the silver star.

Dr. Gurnee served as chief of surgery at Paterson General Hospital for many years.

Affiliated with Fair Lawn Memorial Hospital since 1963, he served as chairman of the Department of Surgery and was elected president of the hospital’s medical staff in 1974.

Dr. Gurnee’s interests were numerous and diverse.

He enjoyed music and could play in any key on the piano or pipe organ with no formal training.

He was a member of the Hawthorne Rotary Club where he served as president and the Saddle River Power Squadron where he served as commodore.

In Winter Harbor, he was an active member of the Historical Society.

He is survived by his children, Quincy DeHart Gurnee Jr., Barbara Resnick, Mary Sisti and James Gurnee, all of San Diego County, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Paterson, N.J.

The family would appreciate donations to the Cancer Society in his memory.
