H. Graham Pope
2000-09-28

H. Graham Pope, M.D., 91, formerly of Westport Island, and more recently of Concord, Mass., died at the Rivercrest Deaconess Long Term Care Facility on Wednesday, September 20.

Born in Boston on May 29, 1909, he was the son of the late Harrison and Lillian (Graham) Pope.

Dr. Pope graduated from Roxbury Latin School in 1927, Harvard University in 1931 and Harvard Medical School in 1935. In 1937, he married Alice Rider, who was then teaching at Concord Academy. After an internship and residency in surgery at Boston City Hospital, he served in the United States Navy during World War II and subsequently began private practice in surgery in Swampscott, Mass. He was an attending surgeon at Salem, Lynn and Mary Alley hospitals on the North Shore of Mass., and was appointed Chief of Surgery at Lynn Hospital starting in the 1950s. He retired in the late 1960s to live with his wife on Westport Island, where he took great pleasure in sailing his Concordia yawl, the Saxon. An enthusiastic hunter, Dr. Pope also enjoyed lobstering, and until very recently, tended to his traps daily.

His wife of 54 years, Alice (Rider), died in 1991.

Survivors include his son, Dr. Harrison G. Pope Jr.; his daughter-in-law, Mary Q. Pope; and his granddaughters, Kimberly W., Hilary K. and Courtney G. Pope, all of Concord.

Friends are invited to attend memorial services in the First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord Center, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 30 at 1 p.m. The Rev. Dr. John C. Lombard will officiate and a reception will follow. Private Interment was in the family lot in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass. In recognition of his World War II U.S. Navy service, Concord's town flag will be flown at half staff on Saturday.

For those who wish, gifts in his memory may be sent to the H. Graham Pope Scholarship Fund, Roxbury Latin School, 101 St. Theresa Avenue, West Roxbury, MA 02132.

Arrangements are under the direction of the MacRae-Tunnicliffe Funeral Home in Concord, Mass.

Lawrence S. Pratt
2000-05-18

Lawrence Southwick Pratt, 93, a veteran of more than 50 summers on Squirrel Island, died April 28 of a stroke, at the Osborne, in Rye, N.Y. He was a retired partner of the New York firm of Wilkie Farr & Gallagher.

Born August 13, 1906, in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of Robert W. Pratt and Elizabeth Southwick Pratt. He was an accomplished amateur jazzman on several instruments, especially trombone and piano, and enjoyed playing Dixieland in small en-sembles. He organized musicales, or Prattfalls, monthly for many years, bringing together amateur musicians in rented hall space, welcoming friends to come and dance to help cover the cost of the hall. The longest stay at a venue was on St. Mark's Place, in the Polish National Home's downstairs ballroom; he also made lunch-hour appearances in the financial dis-trict, and college reunions at Yale and elsewhere. Mr. Pratt first visited Squirrel Island in 1947, and was im-mediately integrated into the Hennessy Five Star Orchestra, the amateur jazz group founded in 1921 on the island. He returned for 52 consecutive summers, even-tually purchasing his own cottage.

An alumnus of the Shaker Heights (Ohio) High School, in 1928 he received a Bachelor of Philosophy from Yale University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and managing editor of the college humor magazine, The Yale Record. He received an L.L.B. in 1937 and a J.S.D. in 1939, both from Brooklyn Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1938. His specialty in the law was real estate, and one of his clients was the Archdiocese of New York.

He collected books, chosen entirely for their titles (example: Fishing for Women), and also had an extensive collection of salt and pepper shakers.

He was a former member of the West Side Tennis Club, the Players Club, the Dutch Treat Club and the Yale Club of New York, where he was an avid squash tennis player and frequently organized events, including a "musical bus" to New Haven or Princeton each fall.

He is survived by his wife, the former Emily Carpenter Kremer of Rye, New York; a son Lawrence Spencer Pratt, of Great Barrington, Massachusetts; and two grandsons.

James G. Purdy Sr.
2000-04-13

James Gilbert "Gilly" Purdy Sr., 80, a resident of the Maine Veterans' Home in South Paris, died on Monday, April 10.

Born in Boothbay, he was the only son of James and Geneva Reed Purdy, and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1938.

After serving in the Air Force during World War II, he married Doris Reed of Boothbay in 1950.

Mr. Purdy worked at the Boothbay Freezer Co. for 16 years. After moving to Poland in 1954, he worked as a foreman at Maine Fisheries in Portland, retiring in 1987.

He resided at the Home for Convenient Living, Norway, until moving to South Paris.

His interests included hunting, fishing and listening to audio books. His wife died in 1955.

Surviving is one son, James Jr. of Poland; one daughter, Mrs. Mitch (Shelley) Cyr of Lyman; and three grandchildren, Krista and Christopher Purdy and Matthew Cyr.

A funeral was held on Wednesday, April 12 at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 26 West Dwinal Street in Mechanic Falls.

Nellie I. Page
2001-11-15

Nellie Page, 76, of Arrowsic died Monday, November 5, 2001 at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick.

Born in Brunswick on August 19, 1925, she the daughter of Wilbur and Harriet (Goodnow) Ambrose.

She attended Brunswick schools. On August 17, 1946 she married Ronald M. Page. They made their home in Bath and she worked at BIW during World War II; later at the Freeport Shoe Shop.

Mrs. Page enjoyed feeding and watching birds, loved to gamble, play cards and was very fond of her great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Ronald M. Page on July 16, 1993; two sons, Gary S. Page in 1977 and David Page on January 9, 1997; five brothers and one sister.

Survivors include four sons, Ralph Page of Bath, Jack Page of Dresden, Raymond Page of Arrowsic, Stanley Page of Massachusetts; two daughters, Evelyn Thomas, Mrs. Charles (Judy) Deion, both of West Bath; one sister, Shirley Plummer of Bath; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Thursday, November 8 at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home in Bath. A graveside service was held Saturday, November 10 in Bay View Cemetery, Bowdoinham with Pastor Wally Staples officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State Street, Augusta, Maine, 04330.

Betty L. J. Wolff

Betty Lilan Jones Wolff died on November 2, 2001, after a long battle with emphysema.

Known as Lilan to her friends, she was born on March 14, 1918, at Morriston-at-Swansea, Wales and educated in Great Britain. After training as a nurse, she joined the staff of a hospital near London prior to World War II.

Mrs. Wolff is survived by her husband, Herbert M. Wolff, M.D., who was in post-graduate medical training in Dublin, Ireland at the time the United Sates entered World War II. While awaiting his commission in the United States Army, Dr. Wolff responded to Great Britain's call for physicians during the Battle of Britain. He worked at the hospital where his future wife was serving as head nurse in charge of operating rooms. Their courtship lasted during the War, and they married in Great Britain in 1945.

Dr. and Mrs. Wolff moved to Trenton, New Jersey in 1946 where Dr. Wolff opened his medical practice, and Mrs. Wolff assisted him as a nurse in his office.

The Wolffs moved to Princeton, New Jersey in 1974. While living in Trenton and Princeton, Mrs. Wolff studied and collected antiques. She had a connoisseur's ability for discerning uniqueness and aesthetic qualities of works of art and furniture, and at times would personally refinish her acquisitions.

Upon retirement in 1985, Dr. and Mrs. Wolff moved to a home on the Sheepscot River in the town of Edgecomb.

Survivors include in addition to her husband, three children, Frances Lylan Wolff of Atlanta, Ga., Robert Jones Wolff of Chestnut Hill, Mass., and Glenys Ann Wolff of Austin, Texas; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Kirsch-ner, and grandson, Dylan Jones Wolff, of Chestnut Hill, Mass.; son-in-law, Howard Wolff; and grandsons, Austin Everett Wolf and Elliott Gavin Wolf, of Austin, Texas; one sister, Margaret Jones, of Colwyn Bay, Wales, Great Britain.

A private memorial service will be held by the family in Edgecomb. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of choice would be appreciated.

Arthur S. Ashton Jr.

Arthur S. Ashton Jr., 60, of Wiscasset, died Friday, November 9 at his home after a long illness with cancer.

Born in Wolfeboro, N.H., he was a son of Arthur S. and Kathleen Reed Overlock Ashton. He attended schools in Woolwich and Bath.

Mr. Ashton learned wallpapering and carpentry as a young man while working with his father. Later he worked at Bath Irons Works and as a self-employed carpenter. For the last 23 years, until his illness, he worked at BIW as an insulator in the carpentry shop.

On November 7, 1971, he married Glenice Bennett. They lived in Bath until 1978, when they moved to a home he had built in Wiscasset.

His hobbies were woodworking and building and restoring boats. He was also a deer hunter and fisherman. While living in Bath, he attended the Beacon Street Methodist Church and was a member of Local 6 at BIW.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Melissa Ashton of Bath and Melaine Ashton of Wiscasset; two sons, Raymond and Arthur III, both of Texas; a foster daughter, Charity; four brothers, Edward of New Hampshire, Cleveland and Charles, both of Wiscasset, and Marc of Boothbay; a half sister, Janet Overlock Hay of New Hampshire; four stepbrothers, Larry Overlock of New Hampshire, Maynard Overlock of Bath, and Earl and Carl Overlock, both of Wiscasset; three stepsisters, Gloria Gusafuson of York, Diane Overlock of Corinna and Carol Guertin of Holden, Mass.; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, November 13 at the David E. Desmond Funeral Home in Bath with Marilee Temple-Harris officiating. Burial followed at Riverside cemetery in Woolwich.

Fred D. Parr
2001-11-15

Fred Dale Parr, 35, died Sunday, November 11 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

He was a 1984 graduate of Boothbay Region High School.

He leaves behind a sister, Maria Parr Umberfield, brother-in-law, Robert J. Umberfield, and nephew, Alex, all of Boothbay Harbor; a sister, Christina Parr of Hillsboro, Texas; his grandmother, Fern Anstine of Canton, Ohio; and many friends.

A memorial service will be held in Salina, Kansas.

Robert J. Paulin
2001-03-22

Robert J. Paulin, 73, died Wednesday, March 14 in Washington, D.C.

Born June 12, 1927 in Augusta Maine, he was the son of Harry Paulin and Winnifred Nelder Paulin. He attended schools in Wiscasset and Portland.

For two years he served as a medic in the Navy. He worked as a short order cook in a Portland restaurant and also worked in the Mercy Hospital in the years he spent in Portland.

Mr. Paulin eventually moved to Washington, D.C. where he made his home for the last 45 years. He took courses in hotel management and had a job for several years in the Cosmos Club which was a "men's" only club for those high in their professions. He then worked for many years as assistant manager of the Army Navy Club in Washington. Prior to retiring, he was manager of the Arts Club.

Survivors include his mother, Winnifred Penlington, who lives in Cove's Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta; one aunt, Anne Beattie; cousins, Sara, Jim, and Tim George, Jean and Jim Simons and Sally Nelder, all residents of Wiscasset, Michael Nelder of Litchfield, and Jack Nelder of Seattle, Washington.

Arrangements are under the are of the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

June F. Paulson
2001-06-14

June Farmer Paulson, 70, of Converse, Texas, formerly of Wiscasset, died Monday, June 4.

Born in Wiscasset on April 12, 1931, she was the daughter of Raymond E. and Carolyn (Greenleaf) Farmer. She attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1949. She then joined the WAACS and served for three years.

In June of 1951, she married Sgt. Nels C. Paulson and traveled extensively with him until his retirement. They then bought a retirement home in Port Richey, Fla. where they spent many years and then moved to Converse, Texas. They were celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary at her favorite spot, Laughlin, Nevada, at the time of her death.

Survivors include her husband, Nels C. Paulson of Converse, Texas; one daughter, Candace Paulson Flint and her husband Ron of Bliss, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Richard Arthur Bailey of Virginia and Timothy Nels Bailey who is serving with the U.S. Army in Bliss, Texas; one great-granddaughter,, Tatyana Sky Bailey; two brothers, Roy E. Farmer and his wife Joanne of Wiscasset and Wesley E. Farmer of Wiscasset; one brother-in-law, Wilford S. Cronk of Wiscasset; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Verne F. Cronk on August 23, 1996.

At her request there will be no services. Local arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset.

John M. Peabody
2001-06-28

John M. Peabody, 76, died Saturday, June 23 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born November 7, 1924 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he was the son of Walter and Frances Chick Peabody. He grew up in New Jersey and attended Rutgers University. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army, 10th Mountain Division and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Mr. Peabody worked for many years for the Post Office in Newburyport, Massachusetts retiring in 1976. After retiring, he lived on his ketch Vayu and 15 years ago he moved to the Boothbay region permanently.

He was active in the 10th Mountain Division Association and the Boothbay Region Humane Society. He was a member of the Dalton Club in Newburyport and the American Yacht Club of Newburyport. He loved to travel, having traveled all over the U.S. and Canada.

Mr. Peabody was predeceased by a daughter, Helen J. Peabody.

Survivors include his wife, Diana L. Peabody of Boothbay Harbor; two sons, David Peabody of Hampton, New Hampshire and Jonathan Peabody of Raymond, New Hampshire; two grandchildren, Amy J. Peabody of Norwood, Mass., and Corey C. Peabody of Westfield, Mass.; one sister, Joanne and her husband Robert Stuart of Portland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

No services are planned.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund of the 10th Mountain Division Foundations, Inc., 710 10th Street, Suite 120, Golden, CO 80401.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.
