Louis G. Petre
2003-04-03

Louis Gabor Petre, 66, died Saturday, March 29 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Hewas born July 29, 1936 in Hungary. He received his formal education in Hungary and spent two years at the University in Budapest. He was a resistance fighter during the Hungarian Revolution.

He left his native country and came to American in 1958. He never saw his parents again, but did return to his remaining family after he became a citizen of the United States of America. His last visit to Hungary was canceled when his last surviving brother died before he was able to make the trip.

Mr. Petre married Doris Russ in 1982 and enjoyed being her best friend and a father to her seven children. During his lifetime, he enjoyed seeing his adopted country as a coast to coast truck driver.

He was an excellent craftsman being well versed in all phases of woodworking. His recent positions were in Massachusetts and Maryland as a fire restoration carpenter. He retired in July 2001, moving back to his home in Boothbay to complete the restoration on his home.

Mr. Petre enjoyed his boat and hunting during his retirement in Maine.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Petre of Boothbay; sons, Walter Bayerle of Washington, D.C., Ernest Bayerle and his wife Susan of Houston, Texas, Thomas Russ and his wife Joyce of Milford, Conn., Sgt. Richard Russ, stationed at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, and his wife Edina of Cape Cod, Mass. and Terry Russ of Boothbay; daughters, Leslie Bernier of Bowdoin and Lee Gallant of Brunswick; 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service was held Tuesday April 1 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrews Hospital, 3 St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME. 04538.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Catherine G. Phelps
2003-03-20

Catherine Grace Phelps died shortly after her birth on March 14, in Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia.

She was born to Christopher and Lori Gatti Phelps of South Riding, Va.

Surviving are grandparents Tony and Nancy Gatti of Wiscasset and john and Jane Phelps of Fairfax, Va.; great-grandfather, Wilford Race of Newton, Mass.; great-grandmother, Geneva Gatti of Cape Elizabeth.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at Fair Oaks Church in Fairfax, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Perinatal Loss Memorial Fund at Inova Fairfax Hospital, 3300 Gallows Road, Fairfax, VA would be greatly appreciated.

Esther L. Pierpont
2003-01-16

Esther Louise Pierpont, 90, of Schooner Estates, Auburn died Sunday, January 5 at Marshwood Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Lewiston.

She was born in Bowdoinham on December 10, 1912, the daughter of Erle and Hazel Cornish Browne. She graduated as the 1931 valedictorian of Coombs High School in Bowdoinham. In 1933 she received a degree in secretarial sciences from Bay Path Institute in Longmeadow, Mass. She then worked for the Federal Land Bank in Springfield, Mass., as a secretary.

In 1950 she married Judson Pierpont of Cassadaga, N.Y. and Springfield, Mass.

From 1950-1960 they lived in Rochester, N.Y. From 1960-1965 she lived in Wilbraham, Mass., where she was active with the Wilbraham United Church and the women's guild of the church. In 1955 she moved to Schooner Estates in Auburn, where she was an active bridge player and food critic.

Surviving is her son and daughter-in-law Robert and (Mary-Jo) Pierpont of Niskayuna, N.Y.; four sisters, Erla Kelly of Southport, Elise Morrison of Auburn, Mary Morgan of South Portland, and Hazel Mitchell of Woolwich; three grandsons, Robert Pierpont Jr., Christopher J. Pierpont, and David J. Pierpont.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross Carmel Chapter, c/o Denise Gilliam, P.O. Box AR, Carmel, CA 93921. Arrangements are by Stetson's Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick.

Weston "Skip" Pinkham
2003-06-05

Weston "Skip" Pinkham, 48, of New Harbor died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 3 at his home in New Harbor.

Born July 13, 1954 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Donna Pinkham and the late Weston Pinkham. He grew up in Boothbay Harbor and was a graduate of Boothbay Region High School in the class of 1972.

For four years, he served in the Coast Guard while stationed in New Castle, New Hampshire. He served aboard the Shackle. After his four-year tour of duty, he returned to Boothbay Harbor where he was a lobster fisherman, fishing out of Boothbay and Gloucester, Mass.

Mr. Pinkham was best known for the love of his son, Joseph, and his family. He was an avid outdoorsman. After suffering a massive stroke four years ago, Skip fought back and lived a full and happy life with his long-time love and companion, Terry Schiff, and her children and grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his father, Weston L. Pinkham, who died in 1974.

Survivors include his mother, Donna Pinkham Farmer of Boothbay; his son, Joseph F. Pinkham of East Boothbay; his sister, Shelley Dodge of Rockland; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 5 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay. The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Al Roberts will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fishermen's Memorial Fund, Box 304, Boothbay Harbor 04538. Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Rev. Philip R. Poland
2003-03-27

The Reverend Philip R. Poland of Whitefield, widely known as the Traveling Singing Preacher, died at the Maine Veterans Home Friday, March 21, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in New Harbor January 15, 1931, he was the son of Orman S. and Ruth Priscilla (Hanna) Poland.

Rev. Poland attended Bristol schools and graduated from Opportunity Farm in New Gloucester in 1948. He entered the armed forces and served in the United States Marine Corps for 18 years. In 1966 he was honorably discharged from military service.

After working at the Veterans' Administration at Togus, he became Postmaster of the Whitefield Post Office in Kings Mills from 1977 until his retirement from federal government service in 1988. He served as Town Clerk for Whitefield in the 1970s and was a Notary Public. He was a member of the Whitefield PTA then and organized fund-raisers including variety shows and movie showings.

An ordained minister, he served as the Pastor of the Whitefield Union Church until 1981 and was an active member of the Busy Bees youth ministry. Most recently he served as Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Georgetown and was treasurer and Sunday School superintendent of the Newcastle-Alna Baptist Church in Alna. He was a member of and served as deacon and choir member at the Pineland Presbyterian Church in Maple Hill, North Carolina. In 1976 he served as Acting Chaplain of the Maine House and Senate.

Rev. Poland was the force behind building campaigns to lay foundations for the Whitefield Union Church and the Alna-Newcastle Baptist Church and he organized the monthly bake sales at Erskine Hall in Alna to help raise money for the church's expenses.

During the 1960s and 1970s he sang with The Swordsmen Quartet and following his first heart attack learned to play the guitar. He instituted his first music gathering at Bertha and Cecile Wright's in Whitefield in 1980. In the early 1990s he sang with The New Life Singers and from March 1994 to January 2003 he led the Monday Night Music Gang at Erskine Hall.

Rev. Poland was an avid cribbage and chess player and enjoyed his Sunday afternoons playing chess with his friend, Wilhelm Kool. He delighted in his annual trip south with his family to Maple Hill, N.C. to visit dear friends, especially Myrtie and Charles Rawls. He also enjoyed spending summer days at Salt Pond in Bristol.

He was most recently employed as a bus driver and aide at MSAD 11 where he started working in 1996.

Survivors include three sons, Philip Walker of Winnemucca, Nev., Edward Walker of Henderson, Nev., and Peter Poland of Whitefield; three daughters, Carol Waggoner of Tribune, Kan., Naomi Poland and Carol Poland Acedo, both of Whitefield; two brothers, James Hanna of Boothbay Harbor and Orman Alan Poland of Cushing; two sisters, Peggy Rubenstein of Thomaston and Paula Matthews of Malbank, Texas; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchild-ren; and many friends and fellow musicians.

A funeral service was held on Monday, March 24 at the Newcastle-Alna Baptist Church in Alna. Rev. Peter Inchcombe and Rev. Rick Newell officiated. Burial was on Wednesday, Marcy 26 at the New Maine Veterans cemetery in Augusta.

Vern Pollard
2003-06-27

Vern Pollard, 79, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Gray, a son of James W.B. and Sarah Hansen Pollard, and graduated from Pennell Institute in 1941, where he was a track and field star holding a state record in the 100 yard dash.

He married Mildred Doggett in 1949.

He enjoyed horse racing, gardening, singing in the church choir and hanging out at Cole Farms Restaurant with his buddies.

Mr. Pollard served aboard The USS Boston in the Pacific during World War II, After the war he was road commissioner of Gray, and then operated The Mobil Gas Station in Gray for many years. After retiring from Mobil he worked at Cole Farms Restaurant. He was a Past Commander and 28 year member of the American Legion, The Gray Post No. 86. He attended all ritualistic functions of the Post and entertained with his rendition of "Bill Bailey".

Surviving are his six children; Marie Pollard, Jeanne Pollard, Gregory Pollard, Ellen Frye, Natalie Manning and Mark Pollard; one brother, Philip Pollard; and four sisters, Geraldine Cose, Barbara Ryan, Jane Barton and Donna Hill; 10 grandchildren.

A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Gregory Church on Saturday, June 21, by Msgr. Lavoie and committal service was in Gray Cemetery. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Memorial donations may be made in tribute to Mr. Pollard to: St. Gregory's Parish, P.O. Box 345, Gray, ME. 04039.

Ruth Pumo
2003-10-09

Ruth Pumo of Southport and Miami Shores, Fla., died Wednesday, October 1 at her home on Southport, after a long illness. She was known for her beauty, charm and generosity of spirit.

Born on December 30, 1932, in Nashville, Tenn., she was an only child. She spent her early years in New York City where she was a model and worked in the fashion industry.

Thirty two years ago, she married Ben Pumo of Miami Shores, Fla., and together they traveled the world, and summered at their home on Southport.

Mrs. Pumo's main interests were her husband, children, grandchildren and her five little dogs.

Survivors include her husband, Ben Pumo; four sons, Jody, Jerry, Bennett and Mark Pumo and their wives, Sally, Nancy and Gail, all of Florida; grandchildren, Christina, Christopher, Bennett Jr., Jennifer, Callie and Brooke; one great-grandchild, Alyssa.

A private service was held on Friday, October 3 at Southport.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Boothbay Region Humane Society, c/o Loraine Nickerson, Montgomery Road, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Allen R. Pye
2003-05-08

Allen R. Pye, 83, of East Boothbay died peacefully at home with the dedicated help of Miles Hospice on May 6 after a long illness.

Born on April 3, 1920 in Hartford, Conn., he was a son of T. Robert and Mabel Ludwig Pye.

He had been a resident of Windsor, Conn. for many years before retiring from the former Factory Insurance Association and moving to Maine in 1988.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 to 1946 with the 100th Infantry Division in France and Germany.

He was predeceased by a brother, T. Robert Pye, Jr., and two grandsons, Andrew and Scott.

In 1947 he married Lois Winchester in Windsor, Conn. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his wife of 55 years of East Boothbay.

He is also survived by his daughters, Terry Spottiswoode of Kennebunkport and Cape Cod, Mass. and Beth Ellen Pye of Windsor Locks, Conn.; his son, Richard Winchester Pye of Miramar, Fla.; five grandchildren, Lynnsey and Casey Spottiswoode of Kennebunkport, David and Richard Pye of Miramar, Fla., and Caly Oliveira of Windsor Locks, Conn.; his twin brother Frederick F. Pye of Maynard, Mass.; his sister, Helen Pye Powell of Oviedo, Fla.; and his constant companion and friend, his basset hound, Pollyanna.

There will be no funeral services. The family will gather later this summer to bid a fond farewell to their wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

Friends may contribute in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 N. Beauregard Street, Alexandria, VA 22311.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Rachel B. Pagano
2004-01-15

Rachel B. Pagano, 75, died peacefully at the home of her daughter on Lobster Cove Road, Boothbay Harbor, on Friday, November 28, 2003.

Born October 19, 1928 in Hammonton, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Thomas and Angeline Pinto.

She was retired from the nursing profession, and moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1998 to make her home with her daughter, Laura Adams. Cooking and crossword puzzles were her passion.

She was predeceased by her husband, Russell J. Pagano in 1983, a daughter, Angela Pagano in 1981, and a brother, Anthony Pinto in 1970.

Surviving are two daughters, Laura D. Adams of Boothbay Harbor and Audrey Lo Sasso of Hammonton, N.J.; a son, Joseph Pagano of Atco, N.J.; four grandchildren, Lewis, Gary, Joseph, and Rachel whom she raised following the death of her mother; two great-grandchildren; a brother, James Pinto of Collings Lakes, N.J.; and a sister, Carmela Dupoldt of Philadelphia, Penn.

Arrangements were under the direction of Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. A celebration of her life was held at Marinella Funeral Home in Hammonton, N.J. on December 5.
