Winship B. Pierce
2004-11-25

Winship B. Pierce, 91, of Wiscasset, died Wednesday, November 17 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick after a long illness.

Born in Malden, Mass. on July 24, 1913 he was the son of Frank and Eliza (Stretton) Pierce.

He attended Malden schools and Northeastern University. In 1931, he joined the laboratory staff at Norfolk Paint and Varnish Co. in Quincy, Mass. In 1936 he was promoted to a development chemist and left in 1948 as Vice President and Technical Director.

On December 9, 1934 he married Glenis A. Hall.

During the years 1941 through 1944, Mr. Pierce worked on the New England Defense Project in Cambridge, Mass. This was a civilian scientific group and reported to all branches of the military. Their responsibility was the development of camouflage for aircraft and airports. In the early 1940s he assisted with the development of an accelerated laboratory method for the testing of copper-based antifouling paints used on ship bottoms for the Navy and maritime vessels. This work was co-coordinated with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Laboratory and the William F. Clap Laboratory in Duxbury, Mass. In the late 1940s he was employed with the color measurements laboratory at MIT under the direction of Professor Dr. Arther C. Hardy. The New England Color Council was part of this group. Mr. Pierce moved to Gloucester, Mass. in 1955 as Vice President and Technical Director of Tarr and Wonson, Ltd., who were producers of a full line of marine coatings. In 1956 and 1957 he taught a course in Paint Technology at Northeastern University.

Retirement to Wiscasset came in 1972. For two years he was employed as a consultant to the coatings industry, and then decided to enjoy his love of boating, fishing, hunting, gardening, golf and woodworking.

He was a lifetime Honorary Member of the New England Society for Coatings Technology and a past president in 1941. He was also active in the International Society, a past member of the New England Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association, the American Chemical Society and a member of Lincoln Lodge #3, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in Wiscasset.

Mr. Pierce was an enthusiastic member of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, U.C.C. and had served on most of its committees.

He was predeceased by one sister, Lilla Buck.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years; two daughters, Nancy L. McDonough of Somersworth, N.H. and Darryl A. Beliveau of Manchester, N.H.; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 27 at First Congregational Church of Wiscasset. Burial will be at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, November 28 in Chadwick cemetery in South China.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, P.O. Box 350, Wiscasset, ME 04578.

Claire L. Papineau
2003-11-13

Claire L. Papineau, 66, of Key Largo, Fla., died Tuesday, October 21.

For 15 years, she was a resident of Boothbay Harbor, and for the last 20 years lived in the Florida Keys.

Mrs. Papineau was much loved and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Al; children, Kenneth Papineau and his wife Susan LaBlanc, of Islamorda, Fla., Patricia and (Stephen) Gottlieb of Boothbay, and John Papineau of Washington, Maine; grandchildren, Brian and Nathan Papineau, and Benjamin and Kathryn Gottlieb.

Marcella L. Parker
1999-01-07

Marcella L. Parker, 81, of Exeter, N.H., died Wednesday, December 30 at the Exeter Hospital.

Born in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Boston, Mass on November 18, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Frederick E. and Helen W. (McCabe) Rau. Mrs. Parker was raised in Wellesley and Milton, Mass., and came to Exeter in 1964.

She worked as a secretary at the Lincoln Street Elementary School in Exeter during the late 1960s and was a volunteer at the Exeter Hospital gift shop for many years. Mrs. Parker had also worked several years in the office at Wellesley High School and for the Wellesley Public Library.

Mrs. Parker was a 1935 graduate of Milton High School, a member of the Exeter Historical Society, and a communicant of Christ Church, Episcopal. She was the recipient of a 50-year pin from the Girl Scouts for her participation as a scout leader and her years in Brownies and Girl Scouts during her youth.

She was the widow of Richard K. Parker, who died in 1988.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Parker of Kensington and Allan Parker of Exeter; a daughter, Ellen Steeg of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a brother, Norman F. Rau of Boothbay; four grandchildren, a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to the NH SPCA, P.O. Box 96, Stratham, NH 03885, or to the Memorial Fund at Christ Church, Episcopal, Pine Street, Exeter, NH 03833. Assistance with the arrangements was by Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, N.H.

Lyn David Parry
1999-10-07

Lyn David Parry, 67, of Marlborough, Mass., and a summer resident of the Boothbay Region, died Monday, September 27 at UMass Medical Center in Worcester.

He leaves his wife of 43 years, Barbara B. (Giles) Parry.

Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, the son of the late Harold and Mary (Higgins) Parry, he lived in Marlborough for the past 40 years.

Mr. Parry was a 1951 graduate of Medford High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He worked as a foreman for several electronic companies in the area, including G.T.E., R.C.A., Bomar and Raytheon, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of St. Mathias Church and a member of the Marlborough Chapter of the American Legion.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a nephew and two nieces. He was the brother of the late Eileen Donahue of Burlington.

His funeral was held Thursday, September 30 from the John P. Rowe Funeral Home, Inc., 57 Main Street, Marlborough.

Following cremation in Rural Crematory, Worcester, burial was at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to "Our Danny Cancer Fund," UMass Cancer Center, 55 Lake Ave., North, Worcester, MA 01655 or to Buddy Dog Humane Society, Inc., 152 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA 01776.

Lawrence E. Paine
1998-06-04

Lawrence E. Paine, 83, of Boothbay Harbor died Saturday, May 30 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born March 21, 1915 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Lowell E. and Mattie Smith Paine. He grew up and attended local schools graduating from Boothbay Harbor High School in the class of 1932.

Mr. Paine worked as a carpenter with his father. They built the Romar Bowling Alley in 1946. He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army. He served in Normandy and Iceland.

After World War II, Mr. Paine returned to Boothbay Harbor and worked at the State Liquor Store for 35 years, retiring as manager.

He was a member of the American Legion; he enjoyed camping, reading, golfing, basketball, baseball, and coaching Little League. He was a loving father and grandfather.

He was predeceased by his wife of 33 years Verona Coolen Paine who died February 11, 1996.

Survivors include a son, Christopher Paine of Dresden; two stepdaughters, Verona ``Ronnie" Wagstaff of Boothbay Harbor and Sandra Hover of Everett, Mass.; a stepson, William Energy of Ft. Worth, Texas; three sisters, Sylvia Stone of Hanover, Mass., Peggy Beaumont of Marshfield, Mass. and Verona Douglas of Mesa, Arizona; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, June 2 at Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor. Burial followed in the Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Andrews Home Health, 3 St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor. Arrangements were by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor.

Kathryn Pierce, 69, of New Gloucester
1999-09-24

Kathryn Louise Pierce, 69, of New Gloucester, died Sunday at a Lewiston hospital.

Born in New Gloucester, she was the daughter of Arthur and Norrine Chamberlain Snow. She graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1948.

Mrs. Pierce owned and operated the Wagon Wheel Ranch in Steep Falls from 1973 until 1975. She also worked as a waitress and caregiver.

She was predeceased by her husband, Maynard Pierce, who died in 1974. Surviving are two sons, Scott Pierce, of Chesterville, ME, and Edward Pierce, of New Gloucester; one daughter, Jean O'Connor, of New Gloucester; two brothers, Forest Snow, of Freeport, and Gary Snow, of Naples; three sisters, Leona Waterman, of Gray, Arlene May, of New Gloucester, and Joyce Milliken, of Auburn; an aunt, Louise Foley, of Phoenix, AZ; and five grandchildren.

A graveside service was held at Riverside Cemetery, in Cornish. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Frances Grace Pierson
2003-10-03

Frances Grace Pierson, 95, of Christian Avenue, died September 13, 2003, at Havenwood Nursing Home in Concord, NH.

She was born in Durham, ME, the daughter of John L. and Frances (Ellis) Pierson. She was a graduate of Nyack Missionary Training Institute and continued her studies at Gordon College where she received her degree of Bachelor of Theology. In 1985 she received the Annual Alumna Award from Gordon College in recognition of her work as a Christian educator among young people for over 40 years. She taught Moral Instruction in the public schools of several Maine towns from 1938 to 1948 under the auspices of the New England Fellowship and Park Street Congregational Church in Boston, where she was a member for many years.

Grace taught Bible and Social Studies at Lexington Christian Academy in Lexington, MA. She also served as the school librarian. Miss Pierson enjoyed traveling, learning new things and most of all, spending time with former students. She touched countless lives through her zeal for learning and by her steadfast faith in Jesus. She was a resident of Havenwood in Concord, NH, for many years and enjoyed her volunteer work there a great deal.

She is survived by a nephew, Commander Robert P. Pierson, of Whittier, CA and an adopted sister, Betty of Limington, ME.

Arrangements were by Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main Street, Concord, NH.

Merton W. Pinkham
1999-11-11

Merton Wilson Pinkham, a lifetime resident of Five Islands, age 80, died Friday, November 5 at his residence.

Born in Bath on April 18, 1919, he was the son of Maurice E. and Millie M. (Stevens) Pinkham and attended Five Island and Georgetown schools. He entered the United States Army.

In 1945 he married Arlene Mary Stimpson and worked as a fisherman all his life out of Five Islands.

Survivors include two daughters, Loretta J. Back of Bath and Catherine M. Butler of Brooks; one brother, Harlan Pinkham of Boothbay Harbor; one sister, Audrey Chandler of Bowdoinham; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 11 in Mountainside cemetery in Georgetown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Georgetown Fire Department, Georgetown, ME 04548.

Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street in Bath.

Linda F. C. Peterson
2005-12-22

Linda F. Crouse Peterson, 42, of Boothbay, died Monday, December 19 at her home after a long illness.

Born in Brunswick July 25, 1963, she was the daughter of Ronald H. and Constance B. Kaler Crouse. In 1981 she graduated from Morse High School in Bath.

On April 17, 1982 she married Stanley E. Peterson.

For five years she worked at Bowdoin College and then was a homemaker.

She enjoyed camping, boating and her views of Knickerbocker Lake.

Surviving besides her husband of Boothbay, is a son, Devon Peterson of Boothbay; one daughter, Shawna Peterson of East Boothbay; and her mother, Constance Crouse of Bath; three sisters, Sharon Nickles and her husband Reed of Bath, Pamela Berry and her husband Mike of Topsham and Debbie Merritt and her husband Johnny of Portsmouth, Va.; one brother, Ron Crouse of Bath; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by an infant son Jared Michael Peterson.

A funeral service will be held Friday, December 23 at 2 p.m. at the East Brunswick Baptist Church Farley Road Brunswick with Pastor Keith Garwick officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the family in care of Pammy Berry, 32 Adeas Lane, Topsham, ME 04086.

Arrangements are by Stetson's Funeral Home, 12 Federal St. in Brunswick.
