BUTLER, E. Farnham

MOUNT DESERT — E. Farnham Butler, 96, born Aug. 19, 1909 in York, died April 25, 2006 at Mount Desert Island Hospital after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Arthur Pierce and Lydia Raguet (Farnham) Butler, formerly of Southwest Harbor, and the husband of Gladys (Whitmore) Butler.

Mr. Butler grew up in Morristown, N.J., where his father was headmaster of Morristown Boys’ School, although “home” was always Southwest Harbor, where his family spent summers on Fernald Point. As a child he spent nearly every waking moment on the water in rowboats or sailboats. Mr. Butler earned his A.B. in economics from Harvard University in 1931, after taking more than a year off to work in the Bethlehem Steel Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Mass. After working for Capt. Bill Black for a couple of summers at what is now the Mount Desert Yacht Yard, Mr. Butler bought the boatyard in 1934. He met his wife of 67 years, Gladys, of Oahu, Hawaii when she came looking to buy a boat. They were married Sept. 3, 1938, in Southwest Harbor.

Mount Desert Yacht Yard began as a yacht storage and repair business, but became a design and building yard, particularly during the late 1940s and 1950s, as Mr. Butler and his associates, Ted Earl and Cy Hamlin, developed the Controversys, a line of light displacement, reverse sheer cruising boats from 22 to 36 feet long. Farnham and Gladys’ black Controversy 36 yawl, Constellation, flying her Cruising Club of America pennant, was a familiar sight to fishermen and yachtsmen alike along the Maine coast from Monhegan to Roque Island.

Mr. Butler served on the Mount Desert planning board for decades and worked actively for many years to create an all-island high school. As one of the governor’s appointees on the Acadia National Park Advisory Committee, he was a liaison between local communities and the park. As recently as last week, Butler was involved in the Island Housing Trust and their Ripples Pond Workforce Housing Project.

In addition to his wife, Gladys (Whitmore) Butler, he is survived by four children, Lydia Goetze of Southwest Harbor, E.F. “Ned” Butler Jr. of Southwest Harbor, Elizabeth Beardsley of Bangor, and John Butler of Mount Desert; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held at a later date. Contributions to the Island Housing Trust in Mr. Butler’s memory would be appreciated: Island Housing Trust, P.O. Box 851, Mount Desert, ME 04660. Please specify the gift is for the Ripples Pond project.

Arrangements have been handled by Jordan-Fernald.

BRAGDON, George

EASTBROOK — George Herbert Bragdon, born Nov. 11, 1922, in Fayette the third son of Melvin and Sarah (Bartlett) Bragdon, departed his earthly life on April 22, 2006, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness.

George was four years old when his mother died. From that point on, he was raised by his Uncle Jesse and Aunt Lil Abbott in Eastbrook, with all the love any parents could give to a child. George joined the U.S. Army in the fall of 1942 and graduated in February 1943 from the Army Air Corps Technical School in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sgt. Bragdon and the crew of his B-17 Flying Fortress left Wyoming in June 1943 for an overseas destination. They were forced down in heavy fog at Dow Field in Bangor, and the next day the crew continued on to England. By November 1943, as a waist gunner on a B-17 bomber, he had shot down his 18th plane. On his 21st mission, over Germany, Jan. 14, 1944, Sgt. Bragdon’s plane was shot down. He spent 18 months as a prisoner of war at Stalag 17B in Austria.

George was known for his storytelling and great sense of humor. Everyone who knew him found him to be a friend. He was always ready to enjoy a good time and loved to dance. He found great pleasure in hunting, ice-fishing, tending his garden (shared extensively with others) and above all else, spending time with his family. George’s 80th birthday party was attended by nearly 300 friends and relatives who helped him celebrate with plenty of stories and dancing. George was a member of the Eastbrook Volunteer Fire Department, the Franklin Veterans Club, the Ellsworth VFW Post No. 108 and the David A. Hooper Masonic Lodge.

George was married to Norma Foster (Giles) on Nov. 22, 1947 and for 58 years they worked and played together. In most recent years they traveled extensively. George enjoyed keeping in touch with his war buddies from his squadron and from prison camp.

Just months after a triple bypass surgery, he and Norma took a trip to Ireland. You know what they say, “You can’t keep a good man down.”

George is survived by his loving wife, Norma; four children, Theo Bragdon of Bradford, Skye LaVoie and her husband, Tommy, of Otis, Susan Hart and her husband, Tom, of Eastbrook and Martin Bragdon and his wife, Michelle, of Mount Vernon; two brothers, Raymond Bragdon of Bar Harbor and Erlon Bragdon Rose of Livermore Falls; grandchildren, Thomas Hart Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Ellsworth, Scott Grindle and his wife, LeAnne, of Ellsworth, Spencer Grindle and his wife, Heather, of Ellsworth, Janet Hart and her husband, Marc, of Franklin, Alisha Wyman and her husband, Jason, of Fort Riley, Kan. and George Bragdon of Mount Vernon; great-grandchildren, Madeline Hart of Ellsworth, Riley Grindle of Ellsworth, Lydia Hart of Ellsworth and Ethan LeClerc of Franklin. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors who will miss him.

George was predeceased by his brother, Meltiah of Westbrook. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home in Ellsworth. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 5 to 8 p.m. today (Thursday) at the funeral home.

Burial with full military honors will follow in the Sunnyside cemetery in Eastbrook. If desired, donations may be made to the Eastbrook Volunteer Fire Department, Eastbrook, ME 04634. After the Interment , family and friends are invited to a celebration of George’s life at the Eastbrook Community Building.
