Joseph W. Ridlon

Joseph Woodbury Ridlon, 86, of Kezar Falls, died Tuesday, July 21 at Country Manor Nursing Home in Whitefield.

Born in Porter, he was a son of Walter and Bertha Gilpatrick Ridlon, and graduated from Porter High School of Kezar Falls in 1929 as class salutarian.

Mr. Ridlon married Harriet Amanda Leavitt of Cape Elizabeth on April 11, 1939, in Kezar Falls and they raised three children there.

The hard economic times of the Depression ruled out college, so Mr. Ridlon joined his father and uncle in the family business, Ridlon Brothers, which was a longtime landmark in Kezar Falls.

In 1940 Mr. Ridlon took over ownership of the business and operated it until 1970. In a small Maine town tied to a local textile mill, Ridlon Brothers saw the folks of Kezar Falls through good times and bad times. When customers couldn't pay for their groceries in bad times, no one went hungry. ``Pay me when you can," was Mr. Ridlon's philosophy. Years later, he would reflect that while he sometimes went unpaid, ``most folks would do the right thing as soon as they could."

After Mr. Ridlon sold Ridlon Brothers, he began a second career as a property appraiser. He relocated to Bath and performed valuation appraisals for several insurance firms along the coast. He retired in 1980.

He never forgot the college education that he was denied by circumnstance and was committed to college degrees for his children.

Over the years, Mr. Ridlon served as Porter's tax assessor and on the school board. He was active in the Porter Fire Department, and during the forest fires of 1947 he opened his home and business to firefighters from around New England. He was active in the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years.
