Phyllis A. Rittall
1999-09-02

Phyllis Aileen Rittall, 86, of Bath, died Friday, August 27 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Dresden Mills on May 4, 1913, she was the daughter of Ernest Wilbur and Gertrude Frank (Mayers) Cate.

She was educated at Dresden Mills Elementary School and Bridge Academy, graduating in 1930. She attended Gorham State Normal School for several years securing her teaching certificate.

Mrs. Rittall came back to the Dresden-Richmond area and taught from 1934 to 1937 at the River Road School before marrying her late husband, Wallace J. Rittall, on June 25, 1938. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage.

She was a member of the Needle Club of Dresden and served as secretary for several years. Her mother, Gertrude Cates, was founder of the club over 50 years ago. The club is still in existence today with several original members participating. She also belongs to the Olive Branch of the Order of the Eastern Star in Dresden.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene W. Rittall of Bath, and Elwyn W. Rittall of Virginia Beach; a daughter-in-law, Judith Rittall of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a great-grandchild, Jeremy Gieb.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, September 2 at Forest Hill cemetery in Dresden. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coastal Humane Society, Range Road, Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, Bath.

Mr. Merrill T. Robbins
1999-04-22

LEWISTON - Merrill T. Robbins, 81, died Friday, April 16, 1999 at the Marsh-wood Nursing Home in Lewiston, were he had been a patient.

Born in Bangor on February 22, 1918, he was the son of the late Edgar L.D. and Anna L. (Parsons) Robbins. He graduated from the Leavitt Institute in Turner with the class of 1936.

He married the former Virginia M. Jordan on October 15, 1940 and she predeceased him in 1992. He was a resident of Turner for the past 33 years coming from Livermore.

During World War II, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Italian campaigns in the European Theater. He was honored with a Purple Heart for his war-time injury. Upon returning from the war, he found employment with International Paper Company in Jay working for 31 years as an operator in the Recaustic Pulp Mill, before his retirement in 1980.

A member of the Turner Village Church, he also was a member of the Nezinscott Grange of Turner and of the Whitney Lodge A.F. & A.M. # 167 of Canton, where he was a Past Master.

Surviving are three sons, Timothy of Oakland, Dale of Dryden, and David of Turner; two daughters, Mrs. Warren (Nancy) Clark of Turner and Diana Dunham of Hartford; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. A brother, Clyde, predeceased him.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 19 at the Andrews Funeral Home, Buckfield; Interment at the Buckfield/Damon Cemetery, Buckfield.

Robert L. Fraser
1998-08-27

Robert L. Fraser, 68, entrepreneur and businessman, died Sunday, August 23, 1998 at his summer residence in Waterford. He was a resident of Boca Raton, Florida.

He was born in Rumford, on August 23, 1930, the son of Emile and Marie (Curran) Fraser. He graduated from Mexico High School of Maine in the Class of 1948, and Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts in the Class of 1953, and Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Class of 1955. He served with the US Navy from July 1955 to November 1958 when he was discharged as a Lieutenant.

He was the Founder and President of Conference Call USA, Inc. from which he retired in early 1997.

He was married in Boston, Massachusetts in 1997 to Penny Peet-Fraser of New York City who survives him. Other survivors include four sons, Robert and Roland of Worcester, Massachusetts, Richard of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and Russell of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts; three daughters, Rosemary Ford and Renee Johnson of Worcester, Massachusetts, and Rita Marie Atkinson of Hopkinton, Massachusetts; two step-daughters, Amanda and Alisa Peet of New York City; two brothers, James of Johns Island, South Carolina and Thomas Fraser of Appleton, Wisconsin and 12 grandchildren.

At his request, there are no public calling hours. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, August 27 at Immaculate Conception Church, Worcester, Massachusetts. A memorial service will also be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 29 at the First Congregational Church in Waterford. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, Maine 04011 in his memory. Arrangements are under the care of the Meader and Son Funeral Home, 24 Fair Street, Norway.

Evelyn M. Roberts
1998-03-26

Evelyn M. Roberts, 67, of Trevett died Tuesday, March 24 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born January 31, 1931 in Boothbay, she was the daughter of Merton and Mary Caton Campbell. She grew up and attended local schools.

Mrs. Roberts cleaned homes in the summer and picked shrimp at Robinson's Wharf. She took care of raising her family.

She enjoyed embroidery, making quilts and had a collection of over 1800 ladies hankies.

She was predeceased by a son, Donald Campbell and by a grandson, James Campbell.

Mrs. Roberts is survived by her husband, Almond S. Roberts of Trevett; two sons, Lyndon J. Roberts of Trevett, and Timothy M. Roberts of Sidney; a daughter, Margaret ``Peggy" Roberts of Trevett; two granddaughters, Tammy Sue Campbell of Georgetown and Heidi Lynn Roberts of Litchfield; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 27 at Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home in Boothbay Harbor. Franklyn Lenthall will officiate. Arrangements are by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor.

Almond S. Roberts
1998-04-23

Almond S. Roberts, 81, of Trevett, died Wednesday, April 15 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born January 19, 1917 in Trevett, he was the son of Lyndon and Marion Emerson Roberts. He grew up here and attended local schools.

For most of his life he was a carpenter working for Manley Reed for over 20 years, Frank Blake and lastly for Ed Reed. He also lobstered after work and painted pot buoys and knitted pot heads for other local fishermen.

Mr. Roberts enjoyed hunting and re-loading his own shells. He was a member of the Boothbay Region Fish and Game, Bayview Masonic Lodge, and the Knights of Pythias.

He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn M. Roberts who died March 24th of this year; by a son, Donald Campbell; and by a grandson, James Campbell.

Survivors include two sons, Lyndon J. Roberts of Trevett and Timothy M. Roberts of Sidney; one daughter, Margaret ``Peggy" Roberts of Trevett; two granddaughters, Tammy Sue Campbell of Georgetown and Heidi Lynn Roberts of Litchfield; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Friday, April 17 at Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor. Franklyn Lenthall officiated. Arrangements were by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor.

Keith S. Roberts
1998-05-14

CAMBRIDGE, MA Keith S. Roberts, 31, died on May 6, 1998 at Youville Lifecare Hospital after a battle with cancer.

Mr. Roberts was born on August 23, 1966 and lived his entire life in Cambridge. He attended Ringe and Latin School in Cambridge and was a manager at McDonald's.

He is survived by his mother, Peggy Roberts and Ronald Dillingham, lovingly known as `Pa,' of West Paris; his wife Martha of West Paris; a brother Kevin Roberts, Sr., of West Paris, two sisters Jane Roberts of Glen, NH, and Kathy Smith and her husband, Joe, of Sommerville, MA; a niece Kristina Smith and a nephew, John Roberts, Jr.

There were no services.

Warren Everett Roberts
1999-03-11

BLOOMINGTON, IN - Warren Everett Roberts, who was the first person to earn a Ph.D. in folklore from Indiana University, and who served on the IU faculty for more than 40 years, died February 1, at his Bloomington residence. He was 74.

Born, February 20, 1924 in Norway, Maine, he was the son of Otho Wilson and Alice (Clark) Roberts. He began studies at Reed College in Portland, OR, but left to join the Army in 1943, serving in the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops during World War II.

He completed a bachelor's degree from Reed in 1948 and a master's degree in English from IU in 1950. In 1953 he earned IU's first Ph.D. in folklore studies.

Mr. Roberts developed a specialty in applying the historic-geographic method to the study of folktales. His first book, The Tale of the Kind and Unkind Girls, published in 1958 charted the story's development and geographical spread.

His early work and teaching was done as part of the English Department until 1963 when folklore became it own department. He also spent time abroad studying folktales in the country of Norway in 1949 and 1960 under a Fulbright fellowship.

His studies then led to a second book, Norwegian Folktale Studies, published in 1964 which is still used as a textbook in Norway, and to an interest in folk museums and folk architecture, as well as arts and crafts.

As a result, Mr. Roberts was one of the founders of the American study of folklife, which he characterized as the traditional ways of life. In 1967 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for further research in folklife study in Norway.

His later books, Log Buildings of Southern Indiana, published in 1985, and Viewpoints on Folklife: Looking at the Overlooked, published in 1968, focused on the material parts of culture and earned him the Wilbur D. Peat Award for outstanding contribution to the understanding of Indiana's architectural heritage presented in 1994 by the Indiana Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians.

He was a member of the Pioneer America Society, the Association of Gravestone Studies, the Vernacular Architecture Forum and the American Folklore Society, of which he is a former councilor and former president of the society's Fellows.

A woodworker and an original member of Bloomington Restorations Inc., Roberts helped in the restoration of both the Morgan and Paris-Dunning houses. He hand-crafted the three sets of double wooden doors for First Presbyterian Church, where he was a member. He was among those who helped save the old Monroe County Public Library building, which now houses the Monroe County Historical society Museum. He was also active in town theater Gilbert and Sullivan productions.

Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife, Barbara (Bacon) Roberts; two daughters, Elizabeth Roberts Gils of New York, NY and Sarah L. Roberts Koplik of Belle Meade, NJ; one brother, Al Gifford Roberts of Portland, OR; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert W. Roberts and Gilbert H. Roberts and one sister, Eleanor Hanscom.

Memorial services were held at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Byron Bangert officiating.

Allen Funeral Home was in charge of arraignments.

Memorial contributions may be made to Middle Way House, the Monroe Country United Ministries Preschool Fund or First Presbyterian Church, Bloomington.

William H. Roberts Sr.
1999-08-19

HARRISON - William H. Roberts Sr. died Thursday morning, August 12, 1999, at his home following a long illness.

He was born in Harrison, a son of George and Gertrude Sanborn Roberts, and attended local schools.

In 1932, he graduated valedictorian from Bridgton Academy.

Mr. Roberts was a board sawyer at the Scribners Mill, which is now a historical site, and at Hancock Lumber and Chute Lumber.

He was a member of the Norway congregation of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Surviving are his wife, Violet Crossman Roberts; six sons, William H. Jr. of Gilmanton, NH, Joseph M. of Toledo, OR, J. Timothy of Plainfield, NJ, George M. of Dover, NH, Kenneth R. of Wiscasset, and Peter V. of Conway, NH; four daughters, Sydney L. Keniston of Bridgton, Sandra K. Caron of Auburn, Susan E. Powers of Harrison, and Sally M. Worbs of Apache Junction, AZ; a brother, G. Freeman Roberts of Bowdoin; a sister, Hilda Andrews of Dover-Foxcroft; 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 14 at Kingdom Hall in Norway. Pastor Lewis Britton officiated.

Urban Roberts

Urban Roberts

Urban G. Roberts, 80, died Sunday. born in Gray June 2, 1918 the son of Urban and Emma Roberts. Mr. Roberts graduated from Pennell Institute in Gray. He lived his entire life on the family farm in Gray where he was born. He served in World War II in the Army and saw action in the Rhineland. He worked at Thomas Laughlin in PORTLAND - for over 40 years.

Mr. Roberts is predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane Roberts, who died in 1992, and a stepson, Charles Davis. He is survived by a sister, Doris Roberts Humphrey, and a niece, Gene Humphrey, of Gray. Several nieces and nephews.

A graveside ceremony will be held in the spring at Gray Village Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Gray Rescue, P.O. Box 297, Gray, Maine 04039.

John D. Robinson
1999-06-17

John D. Robinson, 52, of Newport, Rhode Island, a commercial fisherman for 30 years and captain of the F.V. Rainbow, died Wednesday, June 9 at home.

Born in Bath, Maine, he was the son of the late Myron A. and Mary Hackett Robinson and the grandson of the late Harry Robinson, who was a Boothbay boatbuilder. He was also the nephew of the late George Robinson of Boothbay Harbor.

Mr. Robinson was an active member of the Newport Elks Club, and All Vets Club, the Fleet Reserve Club and the Friendly Sons of Newport. He was a life member of the Sportsman Club.

Survivors include his companion, Janis Mello of Newport; one son, John D. Robinson Jr. of Sacramento, California; five daughters, Kimberly Robinson and Stephanie Robinson of Sacramento, California, Theresa Robinson and Davina Robinson of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Jenna Robinson of Brooklyn, New York; five sisters, Mary Robinson of Salem, Massachusetts, Sandra Robinson of Bangor, Diane Robinson of Lynn, Massachusetts, Charlene Oden of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Missy Robinson of New Hampshire; four brothers, Robert Robinson of Washington State, Donald Robinson of Gloucester, Massachusetts, Myron A. Robinson of Randolph, Massachusetts, and Bruce McLaughlin of Portland.

A memorial service was held at the Memorial Funeral Home at Newport, Rhode Island.
