Robert R. Russell Sr.
1999-08-26

Robert R. Russell Sr., 65, of Dresden, died Thursday at his home from cancer.

He was born in Whitefield, a son of Charles Richard and Mildred Russell, and attended schools there as well as Bridge Academy.

He was employed at Health-Tex, Gardiner, for 33 years and then at Journey's End Farm, Dresden. He was a member of Windsor Memorial Baptist Church.

His hobbies included camping trips with his family, fishing, hunting and riding all-terrain vehicles, as well as woodworking and building. He built two of his homes and made gifts for family members.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Reta Bailey Russell; his mother; two sons, Robert Jr. of Dresden and Randale Roy of Westport Island; four daughters, Mrs. Michael (Regina) Jewett of Whitefield, Mrs. Roger (Rhonda) Clark of Windsor, Mrs. John (Raelene) Fitzpatrick of Wiscasset and Mrs. Mark (Ramona) Vaillancourt of Palm Bay, Fla.; a brother, Phillip Russell of Whitefield; four sisters, Mrs. Lester (Louise) Dancer of Whitefield, Mrs. Gareth (Beverly) Trask of Alna, Mrs. Charles (Gloria) Bailey of Edgecomb and Mrs. Ronald (Dorothy) Bobge of Dresden; 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

There were private visiting hours. A funeral service was held Monday at Bible Baptist Church, Wiscasset, with the Rev. Branan Becknell officiating. Burial followed in Pine Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were by May and Daigle Funeral Home, Wiscasset.

Frances G. Russell
1998-04-16

Frances "Fran" Georgia (Swanson) Russell, 91, passed away on Saturday, April 11 from complications following hip surgery.

Mrs. Russell was the wife of Winslow H. Russell of East Boothbay, who died in 1983.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter and fifth child of Alexius and Mathilda Swanson. She attended schools in Chicago and graduated from the National Kindergarten College in Evanston, Illinois.

She was married on March 21, 1931, and spent many summers at the Russell cottage on Green Landing in East Boothbay prior to purchasing property at Farnham Point and then a house in town in East Boothbay. Mr. Russell's work took them to live in many parts of the northeast during their marriage, as well as one job assignment in Tiawan, Republic of China. They lived there for five years in the mid-1950's.

Following Mr. Russell's retirement in 1971, they settled permanently in their home in East Boothbay. Mrs. Russell was active in the East Boothbay Methodist Church and Coastal Club as well as various other clubs and organizations in the region.

Survivors include two sons, Winslow Jr. of East Boothbay and Kenneth of Acton, Mass.; a sisterin-law, Dorothy Russell of Boothbay Harbor; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A third son, Peter, was killed in action in Vietnam in 1969.

A memorial service is planned for Sunday, May 30 at the East Boothbay Methodist Church. For those who so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Lincoln Home, Newcastle, Maine 04553.

Ruth Stowell Colby
1998-08-27

Ruth Stowell Colby, 91, died at her home, August 21, 1998, from the effects of a stroke suffered January 1 8,1998.

She was born in Auburn, MA, July 16, 1907, the daughter of Harry P. and Jenny W. Romkey Wolfe.

On November 23, 1927, she married Sherman A. Colby in Paris, ME. They were married 66 years when Sherman died January 1, 1994. She attended schools in Auburn, MA and was enrolled in nurses training (or `nurse girl' as they called them) prior to her marriage. Besides being a homemaker, a stamp collector and an avid gardener, having some of the best gardens in the area, for 40 years she worked in various Paris Hill homes where her favorite duties involved serving at social functions. For many years she was a member of the Paris Historical Society. With the help of her husband in research and traveling to collect data, she wrote three genealogy books and was working on a fourth when she became incapacitated due to her first stroke in 1995. When she could no longer work with her flower and vegetable gardens, she could still write and do research which she loved second only to her family.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Irene Colby of Baltimore,MD; two daughters, Ethelyn Chambers and Jean Ryder both of Paris; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Luneau Allen, Normand Luneau, Jonathon Luneau, Russell Ryder, Paul Colby, Debbie Colby Martel, Faith Colby Walker and Corinne Ryder Thibeault; 19 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren, six step great grandchildren and 10 step great great grandchildren; one brother, Lewis Wolfe of West Paris; a cousin, Olive Parks LeBarron of Holden, MA; many cousins, nieces and nephews in Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Nova Scotia; five sisters-in-law, Alice and Violet Wolfe of MA, Laura Foster and Helen Heikkinen of Paris, Pauline Colby of Pittsfield, NH. and many long-time friends.

Mrs. Colby was predeceased by a grandson, Dana Colby; a granddaughter, Paula Colby; two great grandsons, Jesse Luneau and Travis Colby, a great granddaughter, Baby Girl Smith and two brothers, Clarence Wolfe and Albert Wolfe.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Paris Hill with Interment in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn. Weston-

Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris was in charge of the arrangements. Those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to Stephens Memorial Hospital, Main Street, Norway.

Donald A. Ryerson
1999-05-13

WEST PARIS - Donald A. Ryerson, 87, of West Paris died Sunday May 9, 1999 at the Ledgeview Nursing Home following a long illness.

He was born in Sumner on May 21, 1911, the son of Emery and Esther Amero Ryerson. He was educated in Sumner Schools.

Mr. Ryerson was employed by Ellingwood Brothers of West Paris, P.H. Chadbourne of Bethel, and L.M. Manns of West Paris where he retired. He was a long time resident of West Paris.

Mr. Ryerson married Ora Mae Gibbs on December 29, 1934.

He was an avid outdoorsman and a Maine Guide for as many as 60 years. He was a life member of the NRA. He enjoyed having big gardens and peddling his produce. He collected guns and other antiques.

He is survived by his wife Ora of West Paris; four children, Robert Heath and his wife Jeanette of Peru, Herbert Ryerson and his wife Eleanor of West Paris, Frances Noyes and her husband W. Mason of West Paris, and Genneth Berryment and her husband Thomas of Bryant Pond; two sisters, Myrtle Bonney of West Paris and Bernice Swan of Bryant Pond; 12 grandchildren James and Peter Heath, Robin Bellmore (Dennis), Hedi Burgess (Rick), Janet Shock (Jeff), James Ryerson, Larry Noyes, Barry Noyes (Karen), Roger Berryment (Carol), Kristi Berryment, Tony Berryment (Lisa), and Mitchell Berryment; 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Roy and Emery Ryerson; three sisters, Rita Proctor, Beatrice Heath and Erma Chapman; one grandson, Troy Berryment; one granddaughter, Debra Dube and one great grand daughter Ashleigh Noyes.

Visiting Hours were held Tuesday evening at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, in South Paris. Funeral services were Wednesday with Pastor Lloyd Waterhouse officiating. Interment followed at the Pleasant Pond cemetery in Sumner.

Phyllis A. Reny
1999-11-04

Phyllis Alberta (Gilpatrick) Reny, 89, of Boothbay, died Friday, October 29 at D'Youville Pavillion in Lewiston.

Born January 1, 1910 in Boothbay, she was the daughter of Fred E. and Alice J. Burke Gilpatrick. She attended Boothbay schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy in Newcastle in the class of 1927. She later graduated from Bath City Hospital in 1931 which was affiliated with Boston City Hospital.

She was assistant supervisor at Bath City Hospital from 1931 to 1936, employed at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor from 1937 to 1952, supervised nurses and was second anesthetist at Farmington Hospital from 1952 to 1958. From 1958 to 1974 she worked at Dudley Coe Infirmary at Bowdoin College where she retired. Her dear friend, Virginia Leonard, who was also a nurse, died in 1997.

She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Boothbay Harbor.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford C. Reny, who died in 1977. Survivors include two cousins, Eleanor Gilpatrick Lewis of Boothbay and Barbara Burke Ruby of Topsham; a step-son, Neal Reny and wife Jean of Boothbay; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grand-children; and special friends, Phyllis and Joseph Leonard both of Boothbay, and John Leonard of Richmond.

A graveside service was held on Tuesday, November 2 at the Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay. Father Royal J. Parent officiated.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Our Lady Queen of Peace, Meals on Wheels program, or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements were under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Lt. Col. Alfred P. Ricci
1999-10-21

BIDDEFORD - Lt. Col. Alfred P. Ricci, U.S. Army Retired, 81, resident of Oakwood Lane, died unexpectedly on Monday, October 11, 1999, at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

Mr. Ricci was born in Providence, RI, the son of Thomas and Marie (Muccino) Ricci.

Upon graduation from Providence schools, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served 21 years and retied a highly decorated Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Ricci's career in the military included service in General Patton's Third Army in WW II, and also service during the Korean Conflict. He earned one silver star, four bronze stars, and the prestigious Ulchi Medal from the Korean Army.

After retiring from the military, Mr. Ricci entered his second career as an administrator for the American Red Cross Blood Program in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and finally in Portland.

He was a communicant of St. Martha's' Church in Kennebunk.

Mr. Ricci's first wife, Winona Chapin Ricci, died in 1977, and a grandson Shiloh A. Ricci died in 1992. He is also predeceased by a brother, Edwin Ricci of OH, and a sister, Anna Ricci Melnick of RI.

Survivors include his wife Natalie Thayer Ricci of Kennebunk; three sons, A. Paul Jr. of South Paris, Mark of Bridgton, and Matthew of South Paris; a daughter, Carol Ricci of Portland; two stepsons, Brian Thayer of Cumberland and Alden Thayer of Gorham; two stepdaughters, Lucinda Milligan of Sanford and Julie Welch of Boca Raton, FL; a brother, Robert Ricci of Marlboro, MA; a sister, Rita Marchetti of Rhode Island and four grandchildren.

There were no visiting hours. A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, October 15, at St. Martha's Church in Kennebunk, with Reverend Laurant Laplante as celebrant. Private Interment will be in Bethel.

Arrangements were by Bibber Memorial Chapel in Kennebunk.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross Blood Program or to American Red Cross Disaster Relief, 524 Forest Ave, Portland, ME 04101 in Mr. Ricci's memory.

Phyllis A. Rittall
1999-09-02

Phyllis Aileen Rittall, 86, of Bath, died Friday, August 27 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Dresden Mills on May 4, 1913, she was the daughter of Ernest Wilbur and Gertrude Frank (Mayers) Cate.

She was educated at Dresden Mills Elementary School and Bridge Academy, graduating in 1930. She attended Gorham State Normal School for several years securing her teaching certificate.

Mrs. Rittall came back to the Dresden-Richmond area and taught from 1934 to 1937 at the River Road School before marrying her late husband, Wallace J. Rittall, on June 25, 1938. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage.

She was a member of the Needle Club of Dresden and served as secretary for several years. Her mother, Gertrude Cates, was founder of the club over 50 years ago. The club is still in existence today with several original members participating. She also belongs to the Olive Branch of the Order of the Eastern Star in Dresden.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene W. Rittall of Bath, and Elwyn W. Rittall of Virginia Beach; a daughter-in-law, Judith Rittall of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a great-grandchild, Jeremy Gieb.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, September 2 at Forest Hill cemetery in Dresden. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coastal Humane Society, Range Road, Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, Bath.

Mary Frances Rock
1999-09-17

Mary Frances Rock, 54, of Gray, died Thursday at a PORTLAND - hospital.

Born in Portland, she was a daughter of Maynard and Selena Cook Hamilton, and attended school in Gray.

Mrs. Rock enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, ceramics, arts and crafts, baking, country western music and trips on the Nova Scotia Princess.

She was the longtime companion of Lewis Proctor, of Gray.

She is survived by two sons, Harry Rock, Jr., of Saco, and Scott Rock, of Gorham; a daughter, April Hunnewell, of Durham; a brother, Bobby Hamilton, of South Paris; and six grandchildren.

Mr. John B. Robinson
1999-10-21

PORTLAND - John B. Robinson, 79, of Oxford, Chairman of the Board of Robinson Manufacturing Company, died Sunday evening, October 17, 1999 at Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Oxford on April 17, 1920, the son of Joseph and Elsie Watt Robinson.

He attended Oxford schools, Hebron Academy and Phillips Andover Academy. In 1942 he graduated from Lowell Technical Institute with a degree in Wool Manufacture.

On May 9, 1942, he married Elizabeth M. Berger of Upper Montclair, New Jersey. They made their home in Oxford.

He served his country in the Navy, in the Pacific Theater during WWII.

He was the fourth generation in his family to work at Robinson Manufacturing Company. During his tenure he was responsible for installing technologically advanced machinery and was a leader in modern textile manufacture.

He was a member of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute Wool Committee, a director of the former Maine National Bank, trustee of Freeland Holmes Library in Oxford, trustee of the Oxford Water District, and a trustee emeritus of Hebron Academy. He was a member of Oxford Lodge #18 A. F. & A. M., Kora Temple in Lewiston and Oxford Chapter #168 Order of the Eastern Star. He was a communicant at Christ Episcopal Church in Norway where he served as a member of the Vestry and as a layreader.

He was a generous supporter of organizations in his community. He was devoted to his family. He was an avid gardener, tennis player and skier.

Survivors include his wife of Oxford; a daughter, Barbara E. Robinson, of Paris; two sons, Joseph Robinson II, and his wife, Carrie, of Paris, and George B. Robinson and his wife, Harriet, of Otisfield; three granddaughters, Merilee Grubb of Fredericksburg, VA, Bethanne Robinson of North Conway, NH, and Geneva Robinson of Otisfield; three grandsons, John C. Robinson of Raymond, Andrew and Thomas Robinson of Otisfield; two sisters, Elinor Goodwin of Norway and Christine Likens of Sarasota, FL; a niece and three nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 21, 1999, at the Christ Episcopal Church of Norway at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Anne Stanley officiating.

Private Interment will be in the Riverside cemetery in Oxford. Family and friends attended visiting hours on Wednesday evening at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway. Oxford Lodge #18 A. F. & A. M. will held Masonic Services.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions in his memory to the Joseph and Elsie Watt Robinson Fund, c/o Central Maine Medical Center, 364 Main St., P. O.
