Mr. Carleton M. Robbins
1999-12-02

NORWAY - Carleton M. Robbins, 89, of South Paris died Monday morning, November 22, 1999, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Belfast Maine, July 4, 1910, the son of Laforest and Bertha Knowlton Robbins.

He graduated from Crosby High School, Eastern State Normal School and the University of Maine at Orono.

Mr. Robbins taught school in Patten and at Castine Normal School.He had been principal at Saco grade schools and was Superintendent of School for Alfred,Lyman,Waterboro,Shapleigh,Acton,Limerick and Newfield.

Mr. Robbins was very active in the musical activities and organized the first band at Crosby High and played in the Belfast band. He directed the Thornton Academy Band and always sang in church choirs and quartets.

He was a member of Hancock Lodge #4 AF&AM, Paris Hill Country Club, was active in the First Congregational Church in South Paris and was an avid sports enthusiast enjoying baseball, basketball, golf, hunting and fishing.

He was married to Rita Glidden who died in 1981; he then married Angie Rowe Jackson in 1984.

Survivors include his wife of South Paris; a daughter, Chispa Lind Turner of Virginia; three stepchildren, James Jackson and his wife, Nancy, Sheila Fox and Jacquelyn and her husband, Sam, Aceto; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and several step grand and great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Laforest Robbins.

A memorial service was held Sunday during morning worship services at the First Congregational Church,South Paris.

Those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to the First Congregational Church, East Main Street, South Paris or the Oxford Hills Food Pantry, c/o Lisa Jones, Norway.

Arrangements were by Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

Frederic M. Roberts
1999-09-23

Frederic Morley Roberts, 98, of Schuylerville, New York, died Monday, September 20 at Saratoga Hospital.

Mr. Roberts was born in Cheshire Hull, England in 1901 to Dinah Rankin and Frederic Richard Roberts. His father, a Queen's Barrister and Congregational Minister, named him after the Victorian Liberal Statesman, John Morley.

In 1912, Roberts' family emigrated to Stettler, Alberta, where he completed his high school years on the prairies of western Canada. He attended Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, graduating with a degree in electrical engineering. In 1924 he accepted a position as a ``test" engineer with the General Electric Company in Schenectady, N.Y. His tenure with the company would last for 42 years. In his later work he became an engineering field representative traveling extensively. During World War II, he supervised the redesign of the electrical systems of the B29 bomber, the first major application of AC power systems to avionics. After the war, he became the manager of Systems Application Engineering of the Industrial Sales Division of the company.

During his many years in Schenectady, Morley Roberts was widely active in service to the community.

In 1964 Mr. Roberts acquired a 30' Downcast Cruiser which became the passion of his retirement. In 1971 he and his wife built a summer home on Little River in East Boothbay, from which they were able to explore the wonders of the Maine coast. They became active on the stewardship committee for Damariscove Island managed by the Maine Nature Conservancy, just outside Little River.

In 1981, they moved from Schenectady to the younger Roberts' family farm near Bacon Hill, in Saratoga County. They designed and built a home in a pear orchard. They actively took up the practice of planting and nurturing trees. For the past three years, they resided at Wesley Health Care Center, Inc. in Saratoga Springs.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, the former Helen (Bunny) Korthals Altes; three sons, David, Neal and Christopher; four grandsons, all of Bacon Hill, and a nephew in England.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, October 16 at 3 p.m., at the Fort Miller Reformed Church. Contributions in celebration of Mr. Roberts' life may be made to Wesley Health Care Center, Inc., in support of the Meinhardt Partnership for staff education.

Arrangements are under the direction of Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Avenue, Schuylerville, N.Y.

Alan O. Rose, M.D.
2000-02-03

Dr. Alan O. Rose, a long-time resident of Sprucewold in Boothbay Harbor, and New York City, died January 10 at Lenox Hospital in New York.

He was a graduate of Yale University and the Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons and one time president of the Alumni Association.

Following his internship, he did research on cardiovascular drugs at the New York University College of Medicine. This was interrupted by World War II when he went to work with the Lenox Hill Hospital Unit for three years. On his return, Dr. Rose devoted himself to teaching and to the practice of medicine and cardiology until days before his death.

He was an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the New York University College of Medicine. He was devoted to three generations of patients and they to him.

Dr. Rose was a man of many interests. He loved beautiful things, views, photography, sailing and music. He sang and traveled with the Yale Glee Club. Above all, he loved life.

He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Frances; his daughter, Susan; and two grandsons.

Services were held Thursday, January 13 at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home in New York, N.Y.

Theodore B. Ross
1999-10-07

Theodore B. "Ted" Ross, 77, of Alna, died Tuesday, September 28, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born in Alna on October 1, 1921, he was a son of Everett V. and Geraldine M. (Baker) Ross and was graduated from Lincoln Academy in the class of 1939. During World War II, Mr. Ross served as a B-17 pilot in the Army Air Force and after completing active duty, continued in the Air Force Reserve. He retired as Lt. Colonel.

On June 22, 1946, he married the former Marcia J. Angell. The couple remained in Alna where he continued to operate the family business, Ross Egg Farms, until retiring in 1983. He was a very active member of his community and the 1989-1990 Alna Annual Report was dedicated to him for his 26 years of service to the town. He served 15 terms on the board of selectmen and 11 years on the Alna School Board.

Mr. Ross was a member and past Master of the Sheepscot Valley Grange. He was also a member of the Agricultural Extension Service and served as District Supervisor for the Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District. He was also a Corporator for Gardiner Savings Institution and was the former Treasurer for the Sheepscot Community Church. He was an active member of the Damariscotta Baptist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees and was active with Meals on Wheels. Survivors include his wife of 53 years; a son, Neil T. Ross and his wife Vickie E. of Kennebunkport; a daughter, Karen E. (Betsy) Gaecklein, and her husband, Donald J. of Phippsburg; five grandchildren, Nathan T. and Mark E. Ross of Kennebunkport, and Carrie Anne, Christopher A. and Heather L. of Phippsburg; as well as nephews, Kenneth and David Gaecklein and their families. Services were held at the Damariscotta Baptist Church on Friday, October 1. Burial followed in the Alna Cemetery, Alna. Arrangements were under the direction of the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011, or to the Damariscotta Baptist Church, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Elizabeth D. Ross
1999-12-30

Elizabeth Douglas "Bow" Ross, 89, died December 21 in Walnut Creek, California. She summered at Ocean Point for 30 years before becoming a year-round resident of Boothbay Harbor in 1975.

Mrs. Ross was an actress on Broadway and a Powers model before marrying Donald Ross and moving to Brooklyn, New York. For a number of years, she was a Gourmet Consultant in the housewares department of Abraham & Strauss in Brooklyn. Her cookbook, Cooking Amid Chaos, was published in 1983.

Her husband predeceased her. Surviving are a son, Donald of San Rafael, California; a daughter, Kerrin Monahan of Montrose, Colorado; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Mrs. Dorothy D. Ross
1999-10-21

WEST PARIS - Dorothy D. Ross, 94,a resident of West Paris for 63 years, died Saturday, October 16, at Ledgeview Nursing Home, where she had been a patient for the past three months.

Mrs. Ross was born in Dover, ME, March 31, 1905, the daughter of the late Fred and Ethel (Folsom) Dunning.

She attended Dover schools, Foxcroft Academy, and the Maine School of Commerce in Auburn. Later she persued her studies at the University of Maine, as well as Bates College, obtaining her B.S. degree, and becoming a teacher.

Her teaching career spanned 44 years, including positions at West Paris High School, Foxcroft Academy, and Oxford Hills High School, as a business education instructor; she retired in the early 1970s.

Mrs. Ross was a member of the O.E.S. of West Paris,the Retired Teachers of Oxford County, and the Association of Maine Retired Teachers, as well as the West Paris Historical Society.

She is survived by a daughter, Helen Farrar, of Bryant Pond; a son, Stuart Ross, of the Republic of Singapore; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ross was predeceased by a sister, Pearl Penley. She was the widow of Ronald Ross.

At her request there are no calling hours, and funeral services are private.Following cremation, Interment will be in the Dover Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft.Donations may be sent to Tri-Town Rescue, P.O. Box 275, W. Paris, ME 04289. Arrangements are by the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock.

Mr. Richard Peabody Ross

SHOREWOOD, WI - Richard Peabody Ross, 68, of Shorewood, WI, found peace with the Lord on February 28, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Devoted husband and best friend of his wife Kathryn and treasured brother of Cynthia (Ross) Burmeister (William) of Paris, he also is survived by cherished nieces, Dr. Alice Burmeister, Rock Hill, SC, and Dr. Jill (Burmeister) Allen of Clarksville, VA and their son, Richard Ross Allen.

Born in New London, CT on November 10, 1931, he was the son of Rear Admiral Richard M. Ross, US Coast Guard (Retired) and Arvilla Peabody Ross of Paris, who predeceased him.

Mr. Ross retired from North Shore Bank in 1996, where he had been Vice-President of Marketing. He had served on a number of local and state banking committees during his career in financial institutions marketing. He also was a leader in numerous civic and service organizations for many years.

He attended the University of Maine and graduated from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA with an AB Degree in 1954 and received a MBA Degree from the University of Michigan in 1958. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma.

He served as a first lieutenant in the US Army and was stationed in Berlin, Germany during 1955-56.

Interment will take place this summer at the Hillside cemetery in Paris.

Rear Admiral William F. Royall
2000-01-13

Rear Admiral William Freeman Royall, USN (Ret.) died Tuesday, January 11 at St. Andrews Hospital. He was 95 and had been in poor health for several months.

Admiral Royall was born in Medford, Mass. on March 31, 1905. He attended Fishbourne Military Academy and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1927.

He served on the battleship USS Wyoming and two Navy survey ships before transferring to the USS New York, another battleship. He was the sailing master of the USS Constitution when she was brought from San Diego to Boston, Mass. It was always a disappointment to him that her commanding officer wouldn't let him use the sails during this trip.

After service at the Naval Academy teaching engineering and sailing, he went to London as an Assistant Naval Attache where he was an observer. During this period he frequently traveled with the British forces in convoys.

As an early proponent of amphibious warfare, he featured heavily in the development of the LSDs used to land troops and supplies during World War II. After service with the Bureau of Ships, he was reassigned to the fleet, where he delivered the newly constructed landing ships and took part in the landings on Normandy. After the D-Day invasion, he transported POWs to England until receiving orders as Commanding Officer of the U.S. Amphibious Base in Plymouth, England.

When the war ended, Admiral Royall served as commanding officer of the USS Tanner, a Navy geodetic survey ship. Tanner came into East Boothbay for the first Fishermen's Festival where she created quite a stir. The Admiral's next position was Officer in Charge of the NROTC at the University of Iowa in Ames.

This service was followed by a tour as CO of the USS Billy Mitchell, a troop transport. Under his command, the Mitchell made a series of port visits to both foreign and domestic lands during the Korean War. His final assignment was with the Jointp Chiefs' Oceanographic Department at the Pentagon. He retired in June of 1957, after 34 years of service, with the rank of Rear Admiral.

Decorations include the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one battle star, the World War Two Victory Medal, the American Defense Medal, the Croix de Guerre and the French Legion of Merit Medal.

His first wife, Phoebe Walker Royall, died in 1979. They had one son, John Allen Crosskeys Royall III of Millbrook, N.Y. In 1981, Admiral Royall married Elizabeth Masters of Grosse Point, Mich. and St. Louis, Mo., who survives him.

After retirement, Admiral Royall moved to his family's place on Little River in East Boothbay, where he pursued his study of history and genealogy for many years. He was an expert in the travels of Weymouth and was completing a book about the explorer when he died.

In addition to his wife and son, Admiral Royall is survived by two grandsons, Hiram Walker Royall and John Allen Royall, both of Dallas, Texas; his sister-in-law, Louise M. Royall of East Boothbay; three nieces; three nephews; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 14 at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor with the Rev. Peter Panagore presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Andrews Hospital.

Margaret F. Rogers
2000-04-27

Margaret F. Rogers Margaret F. Rogers, 68, died Monday, April 24, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born February 12, 1932 in Richmond, she was the daughter of Weston and Mabel Hinkley Carver. She grew up and attended local schools in Richmond and graduated form Richmond High School in the Class of 1949.

For 39 years Mrs. Rogers worked for Elonic Shoe Factory in Richmond. She was an avid horse racing fan and enjoyed taking rides and traveling. Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Herb O. Rogers of Boothbay; three daughters, Sandra Trafton of Milbridge, Brenda Chase of Lee and Pam Peters of Boothbay; one son, John Rogers of Newcastle; one stepson, Billy Rogers of New Vineyard; one sister, Shirley Tourtelotte of Richmond; five brothers, Leighton Carver, Weston Carver, Sherwood Carver, John Carver and Dennis Carver, all of Richmond; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one aunt, Margaret Carver of Richmond; and one brother-in-law, Larry Rogers of Fresno, California.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 27 at 2 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay with Rev. Meg Queior, Pastor of the Dresden-Richmond United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
