Mrs. Helen G. Remsen
2000-01-06

BURLINGTON VT - Helen G. Remsen, 82, died January 3, 2000, at Starr Farm Nursing Center in Burlington.

She was born April 18, 1917 in New York City to Alfred and Rose Adacher.

Mrs. Remsen attended New York University. She was married to Robert Remsen on November 21, 1940.

He predeceased her February 10, 1996.

She worked for many years in Locke Mills, starting with Donald Tebbetts and staying with the mill through its evolution to Ekco, American Home Products and Gilbert Manufacturing.

Mrs. Remsen is survived by her son, Kenneth Remsen; daughter-in-law, Nancy Remsen; grandsons, Erik and Karl Remsen, all of Jericho and her sister, Yolanda Percarpio of Texas. She was predeceased by her brothers, Caesar, Felix and Julius Adacher.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m.at the Richmond Congregational Church, Bridge Street Richmond, VT on Thursday, January 6, 2000 with a memorial service to follow at 5:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Vermont, 30 Farrell St., South Burlington VT 05403-6196

Arrangements are by Gifford Funeral Home, 22 Depot Street, Richmond, Vermont.

Sally M. Holladay
2000-08-03

Sally Moot Holladay, 80, of Boothbay Harbor died peacefully in the hospital on Thursday, July 27.

Born on October 16, 1919 in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of Seward Adelbert Moot and Eleanor Ramsdell Moot, she was raised on an apple farm by Lake Ontario until she married Louis P. Holladay III, 60 years ago.

They have lived in Maine the last 33 years, before that in Wilmington, Delaware, Buffalo-Niagara Falls and Cleveland, Ohio. She has been active in service organizations, at St. Andrews Hospital, the Garden Club and historical groups.

She has always been a watercolorist in an amateur way and in the last decade or so spent unending hours designing and hooking beautiful rugs and pillows with friends. She has always played tennis, also very actively skied, ice danced, curled, and sailed. She always threatened to take up golf.

A lifelong Episcopalian, Mrs. Holladay attended St. Columba's in winter and All Saints By-the-Sea in summer.

Survivors include her husband; sisters, Suzanne Strother and Polly Hart; children, Becky Dickinson, Louis Holladay, Susan Righter and Breck Holladay; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were led by Reverend Christopher Sherrill. Mrs. Holladay's choice for any memorial would be All Saints church.

Joan Requa
2000-06-29

Joan Requa, 77, of Boothbay, died Friday, June 23 at her residence.

Born November 4, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Cecil and Lucile Heskett Smith.

A longtime resident of Squirrel Island, she was a member of the Squirrel Island Chapel Association, served as librarian for Davenport Library and secretary of the Squirrel Island Village Corporation for five years. She was also a member of the Island Institute.

Mrs. Requa was a member of St. Columba's Episcopal Church, a longtime member of the St. Columba's Choir, served as Chalice Bearer and Reader, and on numerous other committees. She was chairman of the Outreach program, the Bishop's Committee for five years, participated in the Diocesan Convention and was a member of the Episcopal Church Women. She also was a member of the Sheepscot Valley Choir.

She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick Anderson Requa in 1991.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia and her husband, Eugene Lysak of Weston, Mass; one son, Michael Charles Requa and his special friend, Brady Nickerson of Edgecomb; five grandchildren, Stefan Eugene, Genia Requa and Marusz Patrick Lysak all of Weston, Mass., and Haven Charles and Katharine Freeman Requa, both of Newcastle; one sister, Margaret Hackford of Great Falls, Montana; and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 7 at the East Boothbay United Methodist Church. Rev. Margaret Russell will officiate.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Squirrel Island Chapel or St. Columba's New Building Fund, P.O. Box 297, Boothbay, ME 04537. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Marga M. Reynolds
2000-08-03

Marga M. Reynolds, 30, of Brunswick died unexpectedly Saturday, July 29 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in South Weymouth, Massachusetts on September 29, 1969, she was a daughter of Stanley and Regina Kempton Reynolds.

Ms. Reynolds loved music, swim-ming and animal books. She was a member of the Independence Association, with Chris Frizzle being her mentor for ten years.

Surviving are her parents of Glen Burnie, Md.; six sisters, Pamela Miller of Owings, Md., Dr. Linda Reynolds of Stow, Mass., Lorna Reynolds of Lexington, Mass., Kathleen Buckley of Chelmsford, Mass., Kerri Cotter of Austin, Texas, Colleen Reynolds of Portsmouth, N.H.; four brothers, Michael Reynolds of Bedford, Mass., Lawrence Reynolds of Boothbay Harbor, Matthew Reynolds of Glen Burnie, Md., and Sean Reynolds of Denver, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of the Angels will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church in Brunswick at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, August 3. Burial will be at Calvary cemetery in Waltham, Mass.

Memorial donations may be made to the Independence Association, 87 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Arrangements are by Demers-Desmond Funeral Home, 34 Cushing Street in Brunswick.

Mr. Gleason E. Russell
2000-06-01

FARMINGTON - Gleason E. 'Russ' Russell, 80, of New Sharon died Thursday, May 18, at Franklin Memorial Hospital, Farmington, following a short illness.

He was born May 24, 1919, in Norway, the son of Henry and Gladys (Edwards) Russell. Mr. Russell graduated from Norway High School in the class of 1937.

In 1954 he married Eleanor Wescott Dumas. They made their home in Miami, FL for 23 years and moved to New Sharon in 1976.

Mr. Russell was part of a Navy Seabee unit and served a second hitch in Guam after World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He retired from Pan American Airlines in 1976.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Eleanor Russell of New Sharon; a sister, Esther MacPhee of Little River, SC; and a niece Eleanor Allen of Peekskill, NY.

Memorial services were held Monday, May 21 at the Adams Funeral Home in Farmington.

Remembrances may be made in his memory to Maine Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101-2406.

Marguerite W. Rideout

Marguerite W. Rideout

Marguerite W. Rideout, 72, of Damariscotta died Thursday, June 1 at her Schooner Cove home after a brief illness.

Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, she was a daughter of Burleigh R. and Mabel O. Thompson Waterman, and attended the University of Maine.

In 1948 she married Raymond A. Rideout and moved to Hallowell. In the early 1980s they moved to Damariscotta.

Her husband Raymond, and three children, Karen, Anne and David, all died previously.

Surviving are a son, James Rideout of Fall River, Mass.; a brother, Charles A. Waterman of Boothbay Harbor; and a granddaughter, Michele Landry of Windham.

A private service will be held in Pine Knoll Cemetery, Newcastle. Arrangements are by Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta

Mr. Richard G. Reed
2000-06-15

PORTLAND - Richard G. Reed, 69 of Harrison died Friday evening, June 9, 2000, at Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Oxbow, Maine, January 30, 1931, the son of Clarence E. and Hittie Ellis Reed.

He attended schools in Wellsley, MA and Oxbow and was a restaurant equipment sales manager.

He was a past President of the Harrison Lions Club and a former member of the Hopkinton, MA Lions Club.

Mr. Reed enjoyed his flower garden and was an avid Democrat. He worked on Tom Allen's campaign.

He lived in Harrison coming from Ohio and Hopkinton, MA.

On Nov. 16, 1950 he maried Frances Sernecz.

Survivors include his wife of Harrison; four daughters, Sandra Reed Sweezey of Melrose, MA, Sharon Rogers of Harrison, Cynthia Reed of Framingham, MA and Linda Reed of Saco; four grandchildren, Geoffrey and Jillian Sweezey and Nicholas and Bryan Rogers; three brothers, Leonard of Holliston, MA, Wilmer of Wallingford, CT and Myron of Meridan, CT.

Visiting hours were Tuesday and Wednesday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway where a funeral service was held Wednesday. Interment was in Harrison Village Cemetery.

Dorothy Russell
2000-07-06

Dorothy Russell, 88, formerly of Boothbay Harbor, died June 8 at Amenity Manor Nursing Home in Topsham.

Born in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of Walter B. and Elizabeth (Fussell), and attended schools there. She attended the University of New Hampshire receiving a Bachelor of Science degree. She then attended Boston University receiving a Master's degree in Education.

Her work in early childhood education took her to many places. She was director of the WPA Demonstration School in Lafayette, Indiana, and in addition, conducted in-service training for WPA teachers. From there she went to Antioch College in Ohio as a professor in Child Development. An assignment to the Mott Foundation in Flint, Mich. brought her to work with blind children and their parents. Here she integrated the children in the cooperative nursery schools. She was then able to integrate the children into the public schools with special needs of blind children.

Her next assignment was as a professor in the Wayne State University College of Nursing in Human Growth and Development. Her last assignment before coming to Maine was at Michigan State University where she instructed in Human Growth and Development and was director of the Demonstration Pre-School.

Miss Russell settled in the Boothbay area in the '70s and worked for the State Board of Education as Supervisor of Early Childhood Education. She also taught early childhood education for Head Start teachers working in the degree program. She retired form this job and remained in the Boothbay area until she moved to the Lincoln Home in Newcastle in August 1998.

Miss Russell spent many summers with her family in their cottage at Green Landing in East Boothbay before moving to Maine permanently.

She was predeceased by her brother, Winslow H. Russell Sr., and a sister, Marion Russell.

Survivors include her nephews, Winslow H. Russell Jr., and Kenneth B. Russell, Cdr., USN (ret.), and their families.

There will be no visiting hours or formal service.

Beverly Reed
2000-07-20

MANCHESTER, CT - Beverly J. (Wheeler) Reed of Manchester, CT died at home on Sunday, July 2, of respiratory failure due to smoking.

Mrs. Reed was born in Waterville, on March 7, 1932, and attended Auburn schools and then moved to Connecticut in 1959.

She is survived by three sons, Steven G. of East Hardwick, VT, James R. of Goucester, VA, and Peter R. of Roseville, CA and two sisters, Ruth Wisser of Calistoga, CA and her twin sister Baraba Hancock of Oxford.

Funeral services were held in Manchester, CT on July 7.
